It may not be hard news but in my book it beats murder and mayhem.
Kudos to Mom for calling the police. She is apparently a GOOD parent who wants her kids to learn personal responsibility and to grow up to be decent, honest (they'll reform) contributing citizens.
She is not making excuses. We need more parents like her. That alone makes it worth while as news.
Dave- If Lexiwords hadn't gotten there first, I was going to say the same thing: it's news because of the mother's behavior. People are always complaining that the news is too negative and that all of the attention rewards bad behavior-well, here is the antidote. A normal citizen doing the right thing.
But on another note, what type of sub-human abuses an iguana? What is the world coming to?
I think I saw this movie. The kid's have to work at the nature center and clean the tanks and then eventually they become part of the nature show, stumble upon some kind of injustice and the free the animals. Oh wait... that was Free Willy.
It says "Police said the mother of the two boys arrested also called police once she found the animals." Mother of the two boys arrested. Not the Mom the two boys were arrested. I'm glad that she turned in her boys. If she didn't start know, wonder what else they would be up to??
Maybe it's just me but neither of these two kids are old enough to drive. It takes a bit more planning than just juvenile misbehavior to do what they did. They got cages, got there, stole the animals and then managed to get the animals back to their home. Even if the center is near where they live. Seriously. No one noticed?
And a hissing cockroach... really? Like there aren't enough roaches roaming the cities. You want to keep a monster sized one.
Why did they have to arrest the kids. Why not make them do community service instead? No sense putting a criminal record on them so young. When I was young the parents disciplined you and the cops just brought you home. Now-a-days all cops are out to arrest anyone and everyone. Seems it would be better to give them a second chance. No wonder this country is so screwed up, everyone including their own mother is out to put a criminal record on everyone. Now they will have a tough time getting jobs because of a criminal history thereby furthering their decline.
So we should just give them community service? Are you serious. The alarm system was shut off the second time. These kids stole not once but twice. The country is in the shape it's because we continue to reward bad behavior. Whatever happen to "If you do the crime you do the time."
I live near Balto. city and can tell you that there are no shortage of hardened criminals in their early teens there. All kidding aside, often times thirteen year olds, frequently with no upbringing are already lost. Get caught smoking dope, let him sit in the back of a squad car for 20 minutes, call mom and kick'em loose. Breaking and entering is another story, fortunately for them, they didn't try to steal my reptiles, because in my house, juvenile justice is "justice 'ame as anyone else"
They have to arrest them in order to give them a punishment. They probably will get community service, if they are first time offenders. I'm sure their juvenile records will be wiped clean once they reach 18, as long as they don't do anything else.
I would have called the cops if they were my kids too.
In order to get community service they have to be arrested. Community service is one for of punishment as an alternative to jail but it still must be meted out by a judge or other officer of the court.
yeah, i guess as a parent you have to notify somebody.. I would have first contacted the center about getting the animals returned through safe and proper channels; i'd imagine the police had an open file on the case and to get it closed i'd probably have to haul the boys up to the station to take their pics and prints scare the sh!t out of them (i'd double check on state juvinile fingerprinting laws first), and probably get something worked out with the cops/DA as far as deferred adjudication and expungement. honestly the authorities knowing that a parent is serious is usually good enough for them..
To Dave...It made national news so that people know what young ones are up to these days. To HearMyTruth...The kids were arrested to learn a hard lesson. Most likely they will have their records expunged when they turn 18. Kids nowadays think they can do anything and suffer no consequences. If they get their acts together now while they are still young (even by the scared stiff tactic) hopefully when they are young adults they will be good citizens...not criminals. Too many kids are mean, hateful and uncontrollable. Parents are not always to blame either. At least these kids mother had enough sense and concern to call the police and NOT let them get away with it!!
In Baltimore City juvenile records are sealed so this won't show up on them. The apartment complex was within walking distance of the nature center. As far as Carrie Murray Nature Center, I'll do what I can to make sure that their court ordered community service occurs there......friends in the right places. I'm sure I won't be the only one trying to make that happen.
I agree with Silver - the boys should have to clean the poop out of cages for a year as a community service. I don't believe in arresting children for something like this.
I can't believe this made national news. I read it because of the headline (the joke is on me), but I just can't believe this is national news.

Make them clean poop out of the cages for a year that might help.
Herbert II ( my Iguana)is just a shade under 5' long. A year of cleaning iggy poop will teach them a valuable lesson!
Silver, great idea!
Whew, glad the roach is ok.
Th roach would be fine even if someone dropped a bomb on it.
just don't step on it.

As dumb as this act was, at least they were smart enough to leave the hawks and owls alone. That would have ended badly.

Also the alarm system was down. They thought all about how to do this. Except explaining to their mom just where the animals came from.
I can almost hear the pleads over the sound of the hissing...
" But Mom.... pleeeeeeeeeeeeease!!!!"

I believe it is an adjudication of a sentence.
Perhaps a lawyer or paralegal could clairfy.

Now mom is going to inccur a lot of court costs. The court system is designed to destroy people and families!
Chop them up into little pieces to feed the owls <3
Too messy!
