Well, of course, what did you expect? Texas is one of those states where the 2nd Amendment nuts have made it OK for ordinary citizens to carry firearms in public. This is the consequence.
A member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets was walking down the street with his rifle>
First off these Rifles are converted so they can not shoot normal ammo or are plugged. The Rife is for Ceremonies only. How about you read the article first before you say ignorant things...
Don't be an idiot. The "suspect' as supposedly seen with an AK-47. If you did just a bit of research you'd know that this assault rifle is fully automatic which is illegal except for the military. The 2nd Amendment was created to act as a checks and balance between the government and the people. It is intended to keep Congress and other officials aware that civilians have the ability to rise up and overthrow. Granted in the late 1700s our founders didn't think we'd be twisting it so much, but that was the idea. Today you have to be 21 years of age, take a class, pay a HUGE tax, and then spend $500-$1500 on a pistol that is usually concealed unless the carrier has a special grant through the military. By taking the 2nd Amendment away, you give the government more power and like the socialist who lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue needs more power. Don't mess with Texas...
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M University locked down its main campus Thursday after a report that a suspected gunman had been spotted while the Bush family was on campus.
The incident appeared to be a misunderstanding, NBC News reported.
A member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets was walking down the street with his rifle about 2 miles from where the Bush family was, NBC said.
The university's notification system, called "Code Maroon," sent a message at 5:35 p.m.: “All Clear. Person with replica weapon identified. No danger. Resume normal activity.”
Earlier, a campus bus driver was on his route around 4 p.m. when he reported seeing an individual carrying a weapon, possibly a rifle, near a building next to the student union.
University spokesman Lane Stephenson said campus police were investigating.
The university's notification system sent texts and e-mail telling students, faculty and staff to remain indoors while police searched for the suspected gunman.
The university was to hold a ribbon-cutting event where former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, were hosting former first lady Laura Bush at the George Bush Presidential Library Center.
They were inside the Bush apartment at the presidential library and were never in danger, NBC News said.
Stephenson said the report of the suspected gunman would not affect the Bush event.
Texan Said........ "unless the carrier has a special grant through the military."
What the h*** is that supposed to mean?
And where did you come up with the AK-47? That wasn't in the article. If you are a texan and in Texas and got that from local news, maybe you should mention that to the rest of us.
Texan, post #3.2: Tell me more about this special grant through the military to open carry a pistol in Texas. Post a link describing this action of open carry authorized by the military.
A few excerpts from the Texas gun laws from the NRA site:
"A person commits an offense of unlawfully carrying a weapon if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries a handgun on or about his or her person unless the person is on one’s own premise or premises under the person’s control or inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person’s control. It is unlawful to intentionally, knowingly or recklessly carry on or about one’s person a handgun in a motor vehicle if the handgun is in plain view or the person is engaged in criminal activity (other than a misdemeanor traffic violation), prohibited by law from possessing a firearm or is a member of a street gang."
"It is unlawful for a handgun license holder to carry a handgun while intoxicated. It is unlawful for a handgun license holder to carry a handgun and intentionally fail to conceal the handgun."
"It is unlawful to display a firearm in a public place in a manner calculated to alarm."
"It is unlawful to possess, manufacture, transport, repair or sell a machine gun, explosive weapon, short-barreled firearm, or silencer. Federal registration of such an item under the National Firearms Act is a defense to this prohibition."
Basically, open carry of handguns in public is illegal. Open carry of rifles and shotguns is legal. Handguns can be legally carried concealed with a permit. Machine guns may be owned if they are legally registered with the Feds.
American Man...the special grant isn't required to carry a pistol, it's required to carry a fully automatic weapon. Pay attention to the details. Thanks Dan2day for helping them out.
The law states that a person applies to the Federal Government to get a special permit to own an AK-47 or any other machine gun. It is a permit a person applies for, not a 'special grant'. When the permit is granted, the owner of that permit is then registered to own a machine gun.
Even though the military is part of the Federal Government, it is not the agency to which you apply to get a permit. Otherwise, it would be like a pharmaceutical company applying to the Energy Department for approval of a drug for treatment of a human disease.
This time last month there was a shooter at UT. I'd rather the school be locked down than shot up. That's not being reactionary. That's being RESPONSIBLE.
THIS goes to Texan-2568586...A civilian may acquire a fully automatic weapon in the U.S. all you need is a class III license (although this license is quite expensive). Check it!
First of all, try getting one. Second, the weapons you could buy are very limited in number. Third, when was the last time you read of someone legally owning a fully automatic weapon using it for a crime?
Your an idiot!!! Must be from California. Just like a liberal "don't know his head from his a#$", why don't you find out what really happened before you run your mouth.
Wow, your stellar grammar and friendly rhetoric make Texas A & M look great. At whom is this rant directed? I suppose you meant to comment on a pre-existing post.
Targets of anger are always susceptible to these events. As unpopular as the Bush family has been to the Americans, foreigners are even more angry. It is always the case that making public appearances is a dangerous job for these past political families. That is why we have an alert protection team assigned for their safety. One would believe that Texas AM would have had a better handle on all events happening at the same time on their grounds.
The place where he was spotted isn't exactly close to the Bush Library. It would take at least 30 minutes to walk there at a brisk pace. I'm sure the area around the library was well taken care of.
Yes, a rifle. But a rifle that would be better used as a club than an actual gun.
As a current Aggie, the only person we don't like right now is the bus driver who for some reason hasn't grasped the concept that we have a Corps of Cadets on campus. It's kind of a big deal at A&M.
That bus driver did exactly what should have been done. He reported someone carrying what appeared to be a rifle on campus. It was checked out and found to be harmless, no harm, no foul. If it had been some nut with a grudge the driver could very well have saved a lot of lives. Stop cussing people who get involved. It happens all too seldom.
Speaking of the Core of Cadets, anyone remember the time the Aggie Cadet attacked the cheerleader from the other side during a football game with the flat of his sword. Passion, dedication, over-reaction, idiocy.
I've been to Aggieland and it's an awesome place...The Houston local news mentioned the corps when they were reporting on the story, but seriously don't the corps wear uniforms when carrying replicas? And seriously...why would somebody walk around with one of those things out in the open without a uniform on? If I had a replica of any kind of firearm and I needed to walk across that big beautiful campus in my street clothes, you'd better believe that I'd have it in a bag or something to avoid misunderstandings with well meaning citizens. I'm not a student, but IMHO given what's been going on lately, the bus driver did the right thing.
Not many years ago, it was common to see people all over carrying long guns, particularly this time of year. It's hunting season. Then the scared of their own shadows dweebs decided they would be safer if they couldn't see the guns. We now have to put the gun in a gunsleeve or similar to take it into the woods in Ma. Truly pathetic.
As a former student at Texas A&M (for many, many years; 2 degrees) it was an everyday sight to see a ROTC member with his/her fake gun! Must have been a bus driver who was new to Bryan/College Station?
With some of the comments on here, so all you would have to do is get a rifle and set it up to look like a cadet rifle, dress the part, and you have free range of the campus.
Apparently not, at least if the bus driver is there. Things went as they should. Person with a gun, turned in, checked out, no problem-and no big deal. That is how it is supposed to be.
@That'sF'inCrazy - At a campus as tight knit as A&M, and with the corps run the way it is, you would be hard pressed to get very far without someone approaching you, especially if they didn't recognize you or if it's a fish that hadn't whipped out yet.
Jason Cook, a spokesman for Texas A&M University, said the person spotted with a replica weapon on campus walked through Rudder Tower on his way to a parking lot on West Campus, where he got in his car and drove home.
Cook said the person was not a member of the Corps of Cadets, and officials are still investigating why he was carrying the dummy gun.
Texas is a proud state. I have lived here for 17 years. There are great Universities in Texas. A & M may not be great at sports, but the Band is amazing and so are the Engineering and Business Schools. Even though you can carry a concealed weapon here, this state has people more who are more friendly and gracious than most places you can visit in the US. A & M exemplifies the welcoming spirit of Texas. Those of you who are quick to criticize A & M and Texas for the gun laws need to visit this great state and see for yourselves what makes Aggies so proud. If you compare what graduates from schools across the nation have to say about the school they attended after graduation, you would find that Texas A & M takes care of their own, unlike other schools who just take the money and run. I am originally from Chicago. I am proud of my home state; but I must admit I miss the special "Texas style" southern hospitality when I go any where else.
Walking around with a gun, fake or otherwise, would be permitted on almost no other college campus in the nation. At Texas A & M, it's typical behavior.
The "Aggie Spirit" is cultish. (I grew up in College Station, so I would say I have an insider's point of view.)
"They take care of their own" >> Translation: They give preferential treatment to others who wear that ridiculously gaudy Aggie ring. I think that's also called nepotism, and it's an enemy of the free market.
Texan: the federal ban on assault wweapons expired in 2004. The states now determine whether or not u can buy it. I don't live in Texas, but I do live in california, which has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, and there are still loopholes that allow u to buy an AK.
Assualt Rifles such as the AK-47 have one purpose, one design objective, to kill and wound human beings. The require little training to operate, little maintainance, are easy to load and fire. Their basis is the German STG-44, a weapon designed to give maximum firepower to untrained overaged or underaged German soldiers.
I waiting for some gun owner (lover) to threaten to fill my belly with hot lead or put a bullet into my skull for saying such things about the peace-loving gun owners.
You are correct about AK-47's design. If a tyrannical government (could be any govenment) sends their army through the streets of any city in the USA rounding up people for concentration camps or attempting to confiscate our weapons you better hope that plenty of citizens are armed with AK's!
Our forefathers who wrote the Constitution and the Bill of rights di not have hunting in mind when they penned the 2nd Amendment. The 2nd Amendment gave teeth to the 1st Amendment. No government, foreign or domestic, can keep us from speaking freely while we are armed!
I'll never understand the American love affair with firearms. Seems like many gun toting Yanks have more in common with the Taliban and Revolutionary Guard then they care to admit. I think there is some deep sexual identity (passive fathers perhaps) crisis going on and have a Big Gun makes them feel secure in their sexuality.
Legal and responsible gunowners, which the majority of gunowners are, have nothing in common with the Taliban or Revolutionary Guard. We are also quite secure in our sexual identities, both male and female.
Go crawl/slither back into your obviously non-american swamp.......rat.
Only a very small number of cadets live off campus; those that do would not park on west campus. There was never any report from police or the university stating that the person with the fake gun was a member of the Corps of Cadets. Stop reporting rumors.
I currently go to A&M, and the university police later said in todays university newspaper that he was not a member of the corp of cadets. I kind of suspected this because he was in street clothes and the police picked him up at home. This is very weird. They are still trying to figure out details.
No lockdown has been issued (not yet anyway)! Get the facts right and stop spreading rumors. http://codemaroon.tamu.edu/

Must be Georgie was called to lead a cheer for the football game and someone didn't like the idea.
Anyone with rifle experience probably wouldnt misidentify something for an AK-47. That banana clip is pretty prominent.
It was not a Corps of Cadets member.
