Why was the person who "snatched it" not arrested for larceny???? Politically correct means politically correct! One law for all! Theft is theft! Under Sharia law, he would have a hand cut off!!
I guess over there at Fox News cutting off a man's hand is perfectly acceptable, seeing as how Fox News is controlled now by the Saudi Prince who practices Sharia Law, but here in the USA, we tend to be more Christian.
I am not happy that the book was stolen but the intent to desecrate a religious icon is more despicable to me!!! I bet the man attempting to burn the Quaran would claim to be a Christian!! I guess the boy on the skateboard was a "real" Christian and understood that Jesus, himself, would have stepped to save the Quaran!!
Was it stolen, or rescued? Did the man who was going to burn the text buy it at the book store? Was it his very own property, and did he have the receipt?
What are atheists doing there? Probably respecting peoples religions and speaking out against hate crimes.
We do that, you know. I may not believe in your god, but I served in the military and was willing to put my life on the line so you'd be free to worship your god as you chose.
He did the right thing. Should have hit the preacher in the back of the head with it too. As far as atheist, all the religious dogma out there probablly just burned them out.
Athiest are there b/c they realize the just how stupid "adults" are when influenced by the disease called 'religion'.Governor Perry of Texas just passed the law to have all the history books rewritten to make the way white anglo/saxons abused the uneducated indigenous ppl (that where born here before the conquistadors slaughtered them in the name of 'God') sound acceptable.
And ppl wonder why American is screwed, pull your heads out of your A S S H O L E.
It probably is not a crime. The pastor was disposing of the Koran it as if it were trash. Putting your garbage out implies that you're done with those items. It isn't theft when someone takes your "trash".
The pastor had every right to burn the quaran..is it smart or the right thing to do? In my opinion, no it isn't but that's not the issue.
What I don't understand is that people in muslim countries are protesting and making threats againt this country because of it but they burn the bible whenever they want. And we are so scared of retaliation that we attack somebody in THIS country that has every right to burn the quaran if he chooses to.
Why was the person who "snatched it" not arrested for larceny????
Googling Texas law shows the theft of something with a value under $50 to be a Class C Misdemenaor, for which a citation could be issued and a fine given of up to $500. So, he could be cited, but not arrested.
blueinoregon: "I am not happy that the book was stolen but the intent to desecrate a religious icon is more despicable to me!!!"
Me too....like the followers of the Quran who cut off the heads of Christian missionaries.....which me thinks is a little more despicable than burning a book of words that can be reproduced with a printing press....
I would like to know where you've seen Bibles being burned in other countries? Islam actually views the Bible as a religious book and uses it for theological study. The only good that is coming out of this is the unity of sane American's against whack-job "Christians". Radical Christians are no better than radical Muslims, a true Christian would know that and know that burning another religion's holy book is not the Christian thing to do whether it is legal or not.
I find it funny how people and atheists fain outrage if someone burns a Qua-ran they own, yet there is no outrage when someone takes a crucifix and dips it in a jar of urine. They also find it OK for someone to smear @!$%# all over a portrait of the last supper.
Islamic religious symbols are sacred, yet Christian/Catholic symbols mean nothing to you people. The hypocrisy!
Actually the difference is that those Grotesque things done to Christian symbols were done in the name of Art. Which for me I don't understand the appeal but defend their right to do it. And it was strongly protested. Burning the Qu'Ran is being done as a political statement against radical Islam. Equally as abhorrent, and he had the right to do it, but the results weren't worth the statement. Radical Islam does not care what you do, they already hate you. The burning would only have added more to the enemy. And it would have been protested had he not "chose" to stop himself.
Um... I'm not outraged at the idea of burning a Koran. In fact, I have to really praise the Christians for NOT obsessing over the book, no matter how they obsess over the message.
However the Islamic view is very different. They take it as an insult, and their religion does not sit well with being insulted like that. People are already being killed over this, and that was the expected result. Terry Jones wanted people to die because of his actions and still be able to take no legal blame. He has succeeded. And he didn't even have to burn the book, and have a fatwa issued to have him killed.
In a related story the group Iraq and Afghanistan War Vets has come out to issue a statement that Americans need to show more respect for those of the Muslim faith.
In another related story Muslims are outraged by the resistance of New Yorkers, and the US population in general, to building a victory mosque at Ground Zero.
I can't believe people are stupid enough to buy into the Fox catch phrase of "victory mosque". It's a community center with a mosque style prayer room in it, much like the one what was in the World Trade Centers.
"In another related story Muslims are outraged by the resistance of New Yorkers, and the US population in general, to building a victory mosque at Ground Zero."
And rightly so.
A couple of corrections, though. The mosque is a part of a community center that includes spaces for other people of other religions to worship. The community center is 2 blocks from Ground Zero sandwiched between a strip club and an adult book store.
Well, as soon as strippers and porno actors slam planes into buildings, we'll protest that too. You libs keep spouting the "strip club/porn shop" line everytime someone says they're not okay with this mosque. False analogy is false.
It is offensive, but it's NOT the same thing. You guys keep trying to make having a strip club the same thing as having a church for the religion that downed the buildings and killed 3000+ people 2 blocks away. Hmmm. Let's put that up on the scales and weigh it. Not even close.
Mike S, FOX news did not originate the term 'victory mosque'. I've posted this more than once, but if you take the time to learn a little bit about the history of Islam then you will know that Muslims have traditionaly built a mosque at or near the sites of their victories over the infidel. This proposed mosque near ground zero is nothing more than a victory mosque, Mike, and that's why the developers are so adamant about that site and no other.
Although the problem with "victory mosque" is that it's NOT A MOSQUE! It's a cultural center similar to that of a YMCA, that allows prayer from all religions. You seem to be confusing Islam with Al-Qaida which are two completely seperate entities. And they are adamant about that sight because they've spent years planning this and had everything signed off and ready to go until "all of a sudden" Fox and right-wing antagonists decided to rally their base.
Gharms - The religion didn't attack the towers. Lunatics with a twisted view of the religion did. It is just like how we don't shun all Christians just because one small group of idiots - The Army of God - preach murder to stop abortion.
Perhaps you don't know the difference between Islam and terrorism because your first impression was made by the terrorists. Most Americans didn't know anything about Islam on September 10, 2001. Sadly, most American still don't know anything about Islam on September 13, 2010.
A religion did not down buildings and kill 3000+ people. Radical adherents to the religion committed these acts. Would you condemn Christianity for the evil deeds done by some of its adherents? Most likely not. Let's keep our eyes on the ball here; place blame where it is due and only where it is due. Admit your shortcomings if you are unable to see the difference.
Wasn't Newt Gingrich the one who first called it a victory mosque? That was because it was originally called the Cordoba Project and Newt wanted to demonstrate that he know absolutely nothing about the history of Cordoba, or even where it was located. You know, he's big on the fact that he is not a "citizen of the world".
the religion or mosque didn't attack our towers it was the Taliban who are killing our soldiers as well as their own people every day. Has any of you who are against the mosque being built seen whats happening over there, see the death and destruction that the Taliban has created killing, men women children, blowing up hospitals, etc. And Look at us were attacking the Muslims and Islams of our own country. Yea that's right there here they're our bothers and sisters of this great melting pot of a country. What do you people want to put all the Muslims and Islamic people in a special section of the city under city arrest like we did when the Japaneses attacked peril harbor? And the Muslims and Islamic people need to open there eyes and see not everyone in America is against the mosque or for burning the Koran we're actually trying to fight with you for tolerance and respect yet i just read they're attacking our soldiers. Everyone just need to back the hell off and find you human decency. One group, one sick twisted, mean hating group destroyed our towers, destroyed our security, and are still destroying their own country, city's and towns. every day they face blood and war LOOK AT THE PICTURES one group did this. Don't blame the religion or the people who didn't. Do we blame all black, Spanish, white, etc people who killed, raped, tortured, etc someone? Or what about the American who blew up a federal building back in the day he was a white American with views to destroy our government did we go after everyone who shared his belief or all white men No we didnt. We go after the guilty and do our best to give them hell. WHich is what we need to do. Find the Taliban and give them hell and leave the rest of the people who have done us no wrong the hell alone
dnimerick - A Muslim victory over a Burlington Coat Factory? If you take the time to learn about the history of religion, all religions have built holy building on top of other holy buildings. This is hardly unique to Islam.
The liberals are strong and in charge of this forum. Watch out guys. Agree with them or have your posts collapsed. Guess I don't have the same constitutional rights as the muslims. Go figure.
Furthermore, I love how you all spout "FIRST AMENDMENT!" about the mosque, yet you don't have the same outcry over a man being told he can't burn a Koran.....yet another action protected by the First Amendment. I love the smell of hypocrisy in the morning.
But what else would I expect from bleeding heart liberals. Protect the ones killing us and persecute your own citizens. Way to go, sheep.
What I know about Islam is yes, extremists blew up the buildings, and the moderates stood up and condemned it......in our country. Everywhere else, they were burning our flag and dancing in the streets. SOME of the moderate muslims here may have actually condemned it, but I think most did so out of fear of reprisal, as you never hear them speak out against other atrocities around the world. As a Christian, I voice my outrage everytime someone of my faith does something stupid. McVey? Terrible human being. This asshat in Florida, also a tool. BUT, it's his RIGHT to burn the Koran. It's like the mosque. CAN they build there? Yup. SHOULD they? No. And 73% of America agrees with that.
We don't sink to their level. That's the point, Gharms. We demonstrate our resolve as Americans, as a nation united, by not lowering ourselves to commit the same acts they do. I hate to use a cliche, but just because everyone around you decides to go and jump off a cliff doesn't mean you do.
As far as Park51 versus the Qu'ran barbeque - in my mind, this isn't about the left against the right or vice versa. This is a question about whether we're going to allow better attitudes and reason to win the day instead of succumbing to a need for petty vengeances. The mistrust and hatefulness we, as a society, express in massed protests against a thing as inane as the proximity of the Muslim equivalent of a YMCA to the WTC plaza plays into the kind of fear terrorism seeks to instill in us. Terry Jones coming out and attempting to brutishly retaliate by torching a stack of Qu'rans as a threatening warning demonstrates that we're losing our ability to remain calm and dignified in the face of the enemy abroad. Again - that is precisely what these radicals seek and we paying it in spades to them.
Agree with them or have your posts collapsed. Guess I don't have the same constitutional rights as the muslims.
Pssst. You need to read up on the Bill of Rights. Freedom of speech is a term regarding our government and our citizens. A commercial business public forum and its rules has nothing to do with those rights at all.
The only "right" you have here is to follow the CoH and the right to leave any time. No one forces you here.
I have to politely disagree. If anything, they're reveling in the fact that they can attack us and we still stand up for their rights. While I agree, dropping to their level achieves nothing, it is still his right as a citizen to do so. Is it right? Absolutely not. He's playing on the sheer hatred of some of the citizens of the US. I don't by any means hate muslims as a whole, even though I will admit some of my posts may appear that way. I am just very cautious about them. This Imam, for instance, insists he wants to "build bridges of understanding and tolerance", yet he continues to build on a site that he KNOWS fosters distrust and intolerance. It makes me a tad suspicious as to their actual intentions on this site. But you are right, it is the extremists who committed this atrocity. It's just the moderates who hardly say anything about the other violence around the world. Thus, again why I felt that a lot of them stood against 9/11. Not so much because they didn't condone it, rather that they may have been afraid of vigilante justice. Honestly, I guess we'll never know, because at best we have to take what they say at face value, even though their actions speak volumes as well.
It was more directed at everyone spouting off about the first amendment then showing hypocrisy by collapsing posts they don't agree with. I have no rights here, you are correct, but I don't see anyone collapsing the other point of view.
You're right it doesn't fall under Freedom of Religion. It's a zoning issue. It's zoned that he can build whatever he wants there. Whether it be a church, Mosque, YMCA, or Islamic center. But under the Constitution of the United States you can "forbid" him from build an Islamic Center based on religious bias.
It may be convenient to your argument to claim everyone is trying to "forbid" a Mosque being built. But what most are saying is they 'object' to the Mosque being built there. Huuuuuuge difference.
In another related story Muslims are outraged by the resistance of New Yorkers, and the US population in general, to building a victory mosque at Ground Zero.
Svenolafson, at #2.1, by that reasoning the Muslims have taken over all of Manhattan, since there are over 100 Mosques in the city.
You see that's the problem of just blindly spouting talking points, you often times come out looking like an idiot. Stop making people make you look like an idiot and start thinking for yourself.
Good job, Jacob. I'm glad to see someone with some common sense and respect for others, no matter if they respect you or not. Not everyone needs to wallow in the mud, just because others do.
Tolerance becomes intolerant when it hurts others. We dont tolerate certain words because they are hurtful & painful to some people, even though we have Freedom of Speech.
We should not "tolerate" pain or hurt to the families of 9-11 and the rescuers who have already given so much, just so some religion can have Freedom of Religion. No network or right wing conservative person is saying this...Just an American.
When people start using our Bill of Rights against us...something is VERY wrong.
If the Imam is a man of peace, like he says he is, then he will move his "cultural sight" or mosque or Park 51 whatever they want to call it now...
Exactamundo, Bridget. I oppose book burning in any form but I also oppose the location of the Cordoba/Park51/whatever else they call it/Mosque/Community Center/whatever else they call it. If the Imam is truly trying to build bridges then he and the property owners will take the Donald's more than fair offer and run with it !!!
"Dude, you have no Quran"!!! In answer to that... "Dude, you are a Thief!!" You have commited a crime! You have taken something which does not belong to you! Larceny! Theft! If what you did was right, would it also be right if I came to you and snatched your wallet or your valued skateboard?? You'd call the cops, wouldn't you? Equality means equality, this thief needs to be arrested and charged with larceny.
Obviously, the man burning the book had no use for it and was treating it like trash so I am not sure thief would be correct. If you "dispose" of something, throwing it away then the law says someone else can take it!!! Not sure where this would go. by the way it would only be a misdameanor, not a felony, unless your telling us the Quaran is more valuable than the bible, retail, $39.99 Barnes and Noble!
So does that mean next time I light my grill, you are allowed to come snatch the charcoal? I don't agree with him burning the Q, any more than I agree with some a$$ burning the American flag. BUT, the "hero" of this article STOLE something. If he has convictions he wishes to stand up for, he needs to man up. He STOLE something that did not belong to him. He is not a hero, he is a THIEF!
What it means is if you want to build a mosque at ground zero you are exercising your First Amendment rights and supposedly that's a good thing. Burning a Quran is also exercising your First Amendment rights and supposedly it's a bad thing. Burning the American flag = a good thing. Burning a Quran = a bad thing. Go figure.
Pitchfork....Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm quite a moniker. Isn't it something like a pitchfork that old red guy with the pointy tail carries? Shall we ask your church affiliation?
No. I don't think so.
However, I do have a question for you regarding thievery. If Grissom had been brandishing a handgun in the park with all those people around, and Isom had come up behind him, grabbed it, and run off with the gun...would you still say he should be arrested...or would he be lauded as a hero?
M.Forrest Can you injure or possibly kill another with a book? Comparing a book to a handgun makes no sense. That's like saying matches cause arson. But what should I expect from a lib... Using your logic, I have the right to seize your computer, without fear of arrest, because what you type on it may offend some people.
BTW, I have no church affiliation, even though it is none of your business. I am a Christian, I believe in right and wrong, for everyone, and strive to treat all my fellow citizens the same.. We all have to appeal to the Supreme Being when we leave this life.
"Dude, you have no Quran"!!! In answer to that... "Dude, you are a Thief!!" You have commited a crime! You have taken something which does not belong to you! Larceny! Theft! Would you be saying the same thing, if a Muslim were getting ready to burn a Bible?
No, the skateboarder would become a hero to the right wing.
Pitfork, the man was in a public place not his backyard!! Yes, the boy stole it but, on a moral level he has the higher road than someone who would destroy another man's path to God!! Should the boy be punished, yes! I also beleive the man should be punished for religious terrorism!! I think he, or anyone who threatens someone's church or bible or religious symbol, should be treated, the eyes of the law, as a hate crime.
Question, Pitch, if the man was holding a gun and threatening to shoot people and the skateboarder came by and took the gun, would you still be so upset??? The skateboarder seen a hate crime being committed and stopped it, without ANY violence!!
M.Forrest How can you possibly equate a book with a gun? Using your logic, the kids skateboard would be the equivalant to a tank or an APC. My point is, the kid, morally right or wrong, STOLE something. Took something which did not belong to him. He needs to man up and take the concequences. My question - did he or did he not take something that did not belong to him? No difference in what he did than purse snatching! Absolutely no difference.
My question - did he or did he not take something that did not belong to him? No difference in what he did than purse snatching! Absolutely no difference.
Sure, he should be dealt with as a thief...and hailed as a freedom fighter.
"What it means is if you want to build a mosque at ground zero you are exercising your First Amendment rights and supposedly that's a good thing. The absurd correlations that people come up with just never cease to amaze me. Or maybe you're just mindlessly regurgitating the hate-filled stupidity that is rattling around the right-wing echo chamber.
1.) By your pedantic statement, you compared David Grisham's publicity stunt to Imam Rauf's attempts to build a community center in NEw York. You just compared a "1930s, Nazi era book-burning event based on hatred and intimidation" to the construction of a community center with a gym, an auditorium, a restaurant and culinary school, a library, art studios, child care, prayer/contemplation/worship space and a memorial for those who lost their lives on 9-11.
I often wonder how people THAT patently ignorant are actually able to put "tab a" into "slot b" and reproduce. The staggering level of stupidity required to compare a Nazi Ignorance Festival with multi-cultural center can only be calculated in theory, and the density would certainly collapse upon itself.
What's even more apalling is that people will say that crap out loud without even a modicum of shame.
2.) And while I'm on the subject, Buck: you hatemongers don't own September 11, nor is WTC your own personal, hallowed Christian ground. WTC is the location where terrorists used their religion as an excuse to promote hatred and violence.
No one holds all Roman Catholics responsible for the actions of Timothy McVeigh, therefore churches are built near the Murrah Federal Building site.
Most Catholic priests and parishoners are disgusted at the actions of a few priests, and are not held responsible for the molestation scandal. According to your disaster of "logic," Catholic churches would have to be moved away from schools, playgrounds, and day care centers because the entire Church would be considered "sexual predators."
You people need to get a grip.
As far as your whine about "flag burning": It's not as simple as the "yes-no" attitude that is prevalent among the lesser life forms in American society. It has been said that it is a legal form of protest to burn the American flag.....
...after a bit more thought, I have no interest in chiseling through the concrete block on your shoulders to explain the differences in the two, to explain how such a peurile remark as yours was nothing more than a red herring. We all know that you're just trying to cry about being persecuted.
For the record: I would try the same "grab and taunt" tactic that Isom pulled and take away an American flag from a protester. On the other hand, the day that you self-righteous wankers outlaw flag burning will be the day I burn one in downtown Austin, on live TV, after waiting an hour to draw a crowd, and dare one of you pansies to do anything about it.
Don't bother responding, I won't even see your post or feel the dirtiness that comes with having that much ignorance rapid-fired at my head. Welcome to terminal ignore.
I applaud your post and also you are right, you just can't talk to Hate. They will never listen. It is really hard to talk commen sense to someone with a small mind.
On a final note for those of you that are crying "thief!":
Let Grisham try to press charges. Good luck to him in his endeavors.
From the perspective of a firefighter, burning a kerosene-soaked book likely would run afoul of fire code, reckless burning of hazardous materials, using a cooking appliance to burn hazardous chemicals, etc.
Amarillo has an entire section of their municipal code (Section 307) dedicated to unlawful burning. In fact, "No person may cause, suffer, allow, or permit any open burning within the city limits of Amarillo, except as provided by this section, (recreational in accordance with 307, FD live-fire training, and with a specific permit)" with a (max) $2000 fine. Amarillo also adopted the International Fire Code, and they damn sure don't allow for some dumbass to burn kerosene in BBQ pits.
Even though he did not succeed, there's still the intent to commit a crime -as thogh he had tried to burn down a building, but was stopped before he could carry out the crime.
What if the next person to use that park BBQ pit ended up sick due to the kerosene residue, would you same people decry the poisoning?
There are more factors to look at here that are reqlly being discussed. Firstly, yes, the skateboarder did commit petite larceny (a Quran is worth less than 50.00 dollars, unless he was planning on burning an historic relic). As despicable as I find the act of burning the Quran, the preacher was well within his rights to do so. We cannot begin to change what is and is not acceptable based on our fluctuation sensibilities. But stooping to committing a crime to stop something that is distasteful, but in no way illegal, is tantamount to placing someone under arrest for speaking ill of our brave soldiers. While I admire the skateboarder for standing up for his convictions, he method does nothing but inflame those who would otherwise be against the pastor to defend him under Freedom of Speech (as I am). I would defend a person's "right" to burn any book, as horrific that idea is to me, whether the Quran, the Bible, or any other document that they own, as much as I would support their right to disagree with the President as vocally as they wish, or even to burn the flag or copies of the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. Freedom means just that; freedom. Not "Freedom as long as you don't offend anyone". If the pastor wishes to file charges, that is on him as it is his right to press charges since it was his Quran that was stolen. Remember, what is "morally right" is not always what is "legally right"; morals are what you should do based on your beliefs, but the law trumps all. All the same, thanks to all the protesters that stood up to the pastor in question, that was both morally and legally right.
We all have to appeal to the Supreme Being when we leave this life.
That would be the big man in the sky, right? The one who watches everything you do, knows everything you think, and will judge you at the end of your life to see if you lived it correctly. If you do, you get to live in Heaven with him, and if not, he will cast you into the eternal lake of fire and damnation. Because he loves you and is infinitely wise.
I would prefer the beer volcano myself, right next to the stripper factory.
I missed your calls for an investigation for Grisham's possible infractions of fire code. Maybe you posted one and I missed it, so, if you would, please provide a link to it.
Of course, it's not as simple as crying out, "Wahh, he stoled mah stuuuuuff!" but the law is the law, as you say.
Please spare me....burning a kerosene-soaked Koran in a public park doesn't require a law degree to realize something is amiss.
I love how you lefties/athiests invokeMcVeigh's into these arguments.
McVeigh didn't blow up the Murrel building because his religion told him to do it. He blew it up because of his hatred for the US Government, hence the blowing up of a FEDERAL building. It was in retaliation to the Waco massacre. Get the facts straight. The Islamic Extremists attacked the buildings because of their religion.
The Islamic Extremists attacked the buildings because of their religion.
Correct. 100% correct. Because their brand of extremist way the hell out there Islam is a pretty violent and angry group. Think of Jim Jones, only selling murder and not kool-aid. Do you blame all of Christianity for what a guy named Jones did back then, or what one with the same last name tries to burn now? Are the two related? Is this a conspiracy? Quick, call the pope for an explanation!
I haven't read the whole Bible. Can you point me to the part that mentions Kool-aid. I know there is a lot of wine mentioned, but powdered, sugar sweetened fruit beverage...I don't know.
Dear ol' pitchforky...As you clearly didn't get what I posted before I'll try again...I mean, I mentioned asking your church affiliation, then promptly said "No." to asking the question. You answered anyway...and I really never did care what it was...and I guess you just missed that part.
As to the gun v book business...just read most of the other posts in reply to you.
Speaking of logic, yours reminds me of an incident that happened to Winston Churchill. He was at some kind of party when a woman of some means in England came up to him and told him how she disliked that he was drunk.
His reply to her was, "And you, Madam, are fat. Tomorrow I'll be sober, but you'll still be fat."
Now I know you won't see how this fits, but many other viners will. So you get just a bit of it, tomorrow, because I have an open mind and look at events with eyes that see color... rather than merely black or white as yours seem to, I may change my mind about this incident, but you will still be a fathead.
By the way...I too am a Christian. However, I don't slam people up the side of the head with it. And, ironically, like you, choose not to have a particular church affiliation.
Apparently every liberal who likes to trash religion or at least Christianity and Catholicism. When people speak ill of Islam and it supposedly being a peaceful religion, lefties invoke McVeigh.
Apparently every liberal who likes to trash religion or at least Christianity and Catholicism. When people speak ill of Islam and it supposedly being a peaceful religion, lefties invoke McVeigh.
If the religious of this country weren't such bare-faced hypocrites, there wouldn't be any calling out required.
Apparently every liberal who likes to trash religion or at least Christianity and Catholicism. When people speak ill of Islam and it supposedly being a peaceful religion, lefties invoke McVeigh.
1) It's not just the lefties.
2) Speak ill of any religion you want. I would prefer all.
3) Blaming all of Islam for Osama is similar to blaming all of Christianity for the Inquisition.
Yet we'll never see this incident publicized in Islamic countries - that the majority of Americans think that burning books - no matter what they are - are stupid publicity stunts intended to inflame the passions of a particular group or people to no good end.
Still won't help sway favor towards the US. They hate us no matter what. Even if we allowed Sharia Law here in the US, they would find another excuse to hate us. Why keep trying to appease people? Wouldn't it be better to tell them "If you don't like us, Don't come to our country!"
I don't see the point of either group doing it but seeing as it started with the Muslim outrage leading to flag & bible burning while screaming "Death to Americans," I would like to see it in reverse.
Where are the Muslim people who are snatching the American flags and Bibles to prevent them from being burned?
It didn't and won't happen because the only support they would get from the crowd is a Heave-Ho to the top of the fire.
You people cry 'thief', all I have to say is take it and shove it sideways. Yeah he took the man's book, but I think the out rage that would have incurred over the burning has a little more precedence here. At least the boy was standing up for what was morally right, not to mention no one was hurt in the process. kudos to him
So does that mean I can stop by your place and snatch a book or two, without you bitching? Shove it sideways? You are correct about the "boy", but incorrect about the "morally right" He took something which did not belong to him, and should suffer the concequences. BTW, I am a Christian, not a Muslim.
grow up. There's a difference between 'stealing' something of value and this. The boy was attempting to help disolve a situation that could have potentially been problematic. If the evangelist wanted to, sure he could have pressed charges, but he didn't. Would you stop a protestor from burning the American Flag by snatching it from them? *shrugs* I would. You know why? Because I'm an American and deflaming the American flag is just as wrong as trying to burn the Quran. Is it lawfully right? No, but I could give two @!$%#s about that. I'm standing up for what is right.
Do you think that segregation would have gotten anywhere if blacks followed the rules? No, they had to break the laws of the day in order to get things to change. An act of defiance may not be lawful, but sometimes it's the right way to go. Law isn't absolute. And I could really give two @!$%#s what your religion, i'm not one of those people who think just because you are muslim and defending this boys action or vice versus or whatever matters. It's a matter of what is right and wrong.
so pitchfork, you are the one who judges him as a thief? i could have sworn that in you rreligion GOD was supposed to be the judge, not you. how would you like it if people started burning bibles?
as for the "i am a christian not a muslim". duh, no one here would think you were a muslim. we're not stupid, though since you felt the need to tell us that, you may be.
Pitchfork, PLease, you are NOT a Christian!!! Christianity is based on the teaching of Jesus!!! Jesus taught us to love and respect others even when they disagree with you. Jesus taught us to be compassionate and caring, even when others were torturing and killin you!! Jesus' final act on the cross was not to ask for himself, but he asked God to forgive others for they knew not what they did!!!
You may believe in God, but you cerainly don't follow the teachings of Jesus and niether does that man in Florida. You both are preaching hate and intolerence, and that is in DIRECT opposition to what Jesus instructs us to do!!
There are a great many false Christian's out there right now. People who have turned away from Jesus is search of power, wealth and fame!! They "thump" the bible, but yet they do not comprehend what it is actually teaching them!! I pity these people!
Yes Gordy, I'm sure that this guy thought out the whole situation beforehand just so that he could gain attention. He knew that the idiot burner would be arguing with friends and not paying attention to his book.
ok so maybe I was pushing that part to make him seem more 'heroic' then what he is. I don't for one think he is a media whore looking for attention though, just someone who didn't think it was right and took it into his own hands. I still applaud him for doing it regardless.
So if u see a kid being abused in a parking lot and snatch him to protect him, we should charge the parents with abuse and u with kidnapping? bullspit. quit bein so literal and understand the spirit of the law. not using legal-sleeze to say "according o the law, hes a thief!" sometimes simple morality supercedes the law. or is that too simple for u to understand?
and at least this "kid" had the courage of his conviction to ACT directly standing up for his beliefs. He not like the coward Pastor that burns a book to send a message to people 1000's of miles away. The Pastor should go overseas and burn the Kuran if he wants his message truly felt.
You people cry 'thief', all I have to say is take it and shove it sideways. Yeah he took the man's book, but I think the out rage that would have incurred over the burning has a little more precedence here.
Let me use an analogy to show you the error in your logic;
In Alabama, Martin Luther King and a group of followers are marching to protest racism when out from the crowd a man rushes up and steals the banner carrying their message. This message, one of white/black equality is an outrage to the pro segregationist community.
Is he still violating the marchers freedom of expression guaranteed by our constitution because a majority of the people are outraged by the message?
Our freedom of expression laws were designed to protect unpopular speech and beliefs. That is how we protect the minority opinion, because someday it can grow in to something wonderful. Or not. Qur'an burning pastors is the price we pay for that freedom.
burning a quran leads to burning bibles or worse. like the churches that got burned over the weekend. there's around 1.2-1.5 BILLION muslims in the world. do you really want to have to fight ALL of them or would you rather just fight the extremists who actually hate us? if we burn the quran, they will all begin to hate us.
Crimes fall under a number of categories, most relevant to this story is the commission or prevention of an act that is morally criminal as opposed to a crime which is judicially ciminal.
Granted the the skateboarder broke at least one criminal code though in doing so he upheld what IMHO is a much higher and more important moral code which is to show respect for the religious texts of ALL religions.
I applaud the heroic actions of the skateboarder who risked the possibility of being attacked by a band of bigot and still faces the possibility of legal consequences.
At the end of the day though he may have broken the law, he upheld a higher law.
For those of you who think otherwise consider that it the guy in the park were trying to burn an American flag you would all be applauding him.
On another somewhat related note, for those who have been labeling the location of the proposed Islamic Center in NYC as being sacred or hallowed ground, the block on which the center is to be built is currently home to several strip clubs, betting parlors and bars as well as the former Burlington Coat Factory facility where the Imam has been holding services for overflow crowds from their Mosque four blocks away since pre-9/11.
Actually burning the Quran could be a crime depending on what law or ordinance there is about open burning. The pages would probably be alright, but the cover may not. As far as the person that "stole" the Quran being charged with theft, that would be up to the person he took it from.
Again, who is to say that Grisham was the rightful owner? Unless Grisham had a receipt, it's more likely that the Muslim leader that the skateboarder dude handed the book to was the rightful owner of the Muslim Holy Text.
In which case, the skateboarder dude saved the private property from destruction and returned it to its rightful owner.
Tony, you can't possibly be serious in your post, can you? So, if someone was pointing a gun at you, and I came along and took the gun away from him, would you consider that to be the same as well?
The police have a legal obligation to recover the stolen property and return it to the legal owner. Do you think the muslim man would return the book if requested by the American government? There are witnesses and confessions and video evidence.
Dude! Burning a Quran, while possiblly legal, is the highest form of stupidity in the world. like burning a bible, and causes murders and wars. However stealing one, admittidely illegal, pisses off some demented freak who professes to be religious and a christian and who has most of the local population where he lives protesting against him!
Personally I would take 30 days in jail to stop the f'ing hatred and bull@!$%# coming out of your country and the middle east! Suck on that banana dude! Get in touch you can have my Passat once you prove your intelligent!
"The police have a legal obligation to recover the stolen property and return it to the legal owner. Do you think the muslim man would return the book if requested by the American government? There are witnesses and confessions and video evidence."
Gee, I didn't see anywhere in the article where the legal owner of the book was identified.
If the legal owner comes forward and claims the book, then the police may want to get involved.
It doesn't matter if they Want to get involved . police are not allowed to choose which laws they feel like enforcing. And no one answered my question. do you think the muslum man would return the book if requested by the law?
I would hope so. That would be the ultimate kick in the face to these belligerant idiots. Yes, it's legal to burn a flag, a bible, and a koran. Should you? No. Use your effing head. Try to pretend, just for a moment, that the rest of the people in this world matter and deserve respect just like you do. We all know they don't, and that you're the only person whose feelings should be protected, but just for kicks, try to imagine that those who disagree with you are actual people, too, and deserving of your respect.
We can't start defending law-breakers by labelling them "morally right". Morals are personal beliefs, and as such vary from person to person, while the law is written down and applies equally to all people. To say that this person was "morally right" to steal the Quran from the pastor (presuming the pastor was the legal owner) and should therefore not be prosecuted for theft is essentially the same as saying that Dr. George Tillman's murderer shouldn't be prosecuted because what he was doing was "morally right" according to his morals. In fact, he was prosecuted because it is illegal to kill a person without some seriously extenuating circumstances, primarily what as known as "imminent danger", i.e. Dr. Tillman was about to kill someone else, and killing him was the only way to prevent the murder. If the pastor had doused a Muslim with kerosene and was about to toss the match, then the skater had a duty to slip in and save the day, but burning a Quran doesn't create "imminent danger", and so it is theft. Beyond that, charges will only be filed if the pastor chooses to file them.
Rev that is exactly right. I don't think anyone wants to press charges and it isn't really a big deal either way, but that doesn't mean it was legal. personally I would like to wipe my azz with it
I don't think that is exactly right. There's a big difference between grabbing a book out of a guy's hand and murdering a human being. This is more like, when a teacher takes away the note a kid is passing in class, because it's disruptive to the peace and the child still has a lot to learn.
Frankly, I love my Muslim neighbors and would take them any day over the yahoo on the other side with the massive speakers in his ugly car. They are helpful, kind, and pleasant. They are quiet, unlike the other guy. If I am sick, they make me soup. If I forget to close my garage, they close it for me. If my washer breaks, one of the sons comes over and fixes it. The other guy, who is always spouting off about how Muslims don't belong in America, gets drunk and drives his motorcycle through my roses. Guess which one is the better neighbor?
The worst business partner I have ever had was a Muslim. He took my design and sold it to another company with out permission.
Then he moved to Florida so I could not take his home in a lawsuit. He then said to me its OK to steal, if you get away with it is Ala's will. This is how the Muslims religin works.
Betty , a lot of these people seem to have no actual experience with American Muslims.
The extremist-controlled countries in the Middle East are a nightmare of corruption and repression -- exactly what happens when religion meets power -- but the majority of educated Muslims find the radical Islamists as alarming as most of us find the Christian fundamentalists. Same ideas, different wardrobe.
Betty. Good for you for speaking up about your neighbors and their human actions. Radical muslims are in the forefront at this time and get all the publicity. Unfortunatley, too many non-radicals do not step forward and speak out publicly against the people who are trying to represent Islam with their style of media grabbing horrific actions. If more muslims were to speak out publicty against the destructive actions of the few, perhaps the media would be forced to cover the story of the reactions of the majority. Until that happens, we will always be burdened with the hatred as presented in the media. Additionally, do some research on how Egyptian Christians and christians from other Islamic majority countries are treated and you may see that the neighborleness you have with your neighbor would not exisit in those countries. Perhaps your muslim neighbors came to the USA for the freedom to be allowed friendship with others who are not muslim.
Give me a break tony. For one, just because someone moves out of state does not mean they cant still be sued. Your story sounds like a lie to me, or your just really slow. I am betting on both.
appalachian- Look up the law. In Florida you can not take a home in a lawsuit. This is why all the crooks move to Florida and put all there money into their home.
While the preacher had the legal right to burn the Quran, it is morally wrong to burn and religious book. Good job to the young man in stopping a situation that could have easily gotten out of hand.
I would help the preacher burn it myself. those muderous muslims killed my son in Iraq. How could anyone have sympathy for those people who hate America and all she stands for? Maybe they should all move to the muslim countries with them. America and the western world would be better without them.
Sorry for your loss OnewholovesAmerica, but that kind of attitude is wrong and not what your son sacrificed for. Our troops though out our nations history have fought and sacrificed so that ALL can live and worship peacefully without prejudice. Read up on the Spanish Inquisition or better yet the Crusades. Christians have had a nasty history too. The Middle East is in bad shape and there are those who pray on the weak and ignorant to gain power. Guy named Hitler did that some time ago. Bad people and good people come from all walks of life. You have a right to be angry, but be angry at the right people. There are Muslims who are good people, just as there are Christians who are not. As someone who also has friends and loved ones fighting there, I will do my best to honor them and what they fight for and spreading hate for a group of people who don't deserve it is not the way to do it. Stop those who spread that hate and fear like the terrorists who skew their religion to justify their atrocities. If we become like them, then everything America was meant to be is dead and gone.
Dear God, please find it in your heart to help the po-po hunt down and subdue a young man who stood up for what was right.
How Christian of you, proamerica! You know you're the sort who'd have stood with the mob when they hurled stones at Christ as he hauled the cross to Golgotha.
Sorry, Behr...but, in order for it to be considered a crime of theft, someone would have to file charges and prove that the stolen property actually belonged to them. Until that happens...no crime.
Having been a Texan for many years and in Amarillo, I was proud of the young man who took this step. Theft ? Jesus taught us to love our neighbors too.. What is the lesser crime- theft of a book which was doused in kerosene or spreading hate?? I think spreading hate and intolerance is much worse.
I agree! Or better yet, what would be the right thing to do? This question fits all religions and everyone who has no religion as well. The reason I am not a Christian, or any other religion for that matter, is that many who proclaim to be a member of a religion or believe in a particular religion do not act as they proclaim.
Anyone of you amateur crime fighters who are calling for this kid to be charged with a crime out there even care what General Petraeus had to say? Don't burn it! You are putting American lives, overseas, at stake! You probably don't care anyway. Just pretend you are a patriot. Easier that way - right.
Put our troops at risk? Not like they are in Afghanistan selling girl-scout cookies. They are suited in kevlar, toting M4's, and taking shots from these camel jockeys everyday. If you are that worried about our troops, enlist and go help.
I am a patriot. I am an honorably discharged 7 year vet. I served to protect ALL our freedoms, not just the ones that the PC liberals wish to flaunt. I agree with the General. But that said, the law is the law. Theft is theft. Since when do we applaud thieves? If he wants to steal, he should be willing to go to court and explain his motivation for the theft he committed.
Perspective is always a good point. The men who dressed up like Indians and threw tea into Boston's Harbor were reviled as thieves for their destruction of private property by the British colonial government. They were considered patriots by the colonials were did not like the tea tax. During the Boston Tea Party they had to break a lock on the vessel to get at the tea. They took up a collection and sent money to the ship's captain to pay for their damage. If the church official feels he was the victim of a crime I think he should file a complaint with the Amarillo police and demand his property be returned, or at least receive some type of restitution.
"I am a patriot. I am an honorably discharged 7 year vet. I served to protect ALL our freedoms, not just the ones that the PC liberals wish to flaunt. I agree with the General. But that said, the law is the law."
Since you are such a patriot, then I guess you don't mind having a Muslim cultural center 2 blocks from Ground Zero. After all, the law is the law and in this case it is freedom of religion that is the law.
Would you prosecute a petty theft and then deny someone's freedom of religion?
Apparently, you children keep missing the big picture that General Patreus was speaking about.
No, we're not that selling girl scout cookies, but making such a remark shows why people like Patreus are called upon to solve the big problems and people such as yourself are relegated to working on small-minded projects like the efficient application of Velcro shoes.
For the book-burning imbeciles to go through with their ignorant, attention-garnering stunts (akin to a child crapping his pants to get attention) would have given fuel to the argument that the terrorist factions use. All it takes is for a video to go viral in the Arab world, side-by-side with a Hitler video, voiced-over with some cleric saying "we told you America is trying to destroy Islam. Take up arms and fight alongside your Muslim brothers before the Americans come to your home, burn your Koran, rape your women and take the land that Allah provides for us."
That's when all those financially oppressed, sexually frustated, 15-year-old boys that weren't swayed by the "75 virgins story" begin to believe that their resistance was in vain, and those Americans really DO want to destroy them.
They will blame US for their problems and failures, believe that we intentionally target them for their religion, and the terrorist factions won't be able to train the jihadists fast enough.
I know that such large-scale thinking and analysis may be beyond your grasp, but at least have the decency to confine your arguments to whatever schoolyard playground you're trying to impress.
Apparently, you children keep missing the big picture that General Patreus was speaking about.

For the book-burning imbeciles to go through with their ignorant, attention-garnering stunts...
Maybe if you insult people even more, you'll sound as smart as you think you are...nah, never mind.
If you are so concerned about American soldiers lives, and you are so patriotic then why don't you join the armed forces and serve your country? My 24 year lod son did and died or was murdered by muslims in Iraq. I would expel them all out of here and burn every quran in the world.
Guess what, "OneWhoLovesA LameArgument": I noticed that a reference to your own military service was left out of your post. You boast of your son's service and ask why others didn't join, as though joining the military is the only way to show true "love of country," yet you left out your own military career.
What was your branch of service? Rank? Date of discharge? Or was your statement one of those red herrings intended to give you the same warm feeling as wetting your pants?
Also keep in mind that if your son was killed overseas, then he was killed on foreign soil as a member of an invasion force. He was not murdered, he was killed by someone defending their home. I'd do the same if someone was trying to invade my country. And don't blame me for cutting through the crap -blame those that gave the order for your son to go after some pissant, two-bit moron like Saddam Hussein.
Furthermore, I'm not the military type. I don't blindly follow orders, and for any soldier to argue against that, I call horsesh!t. If you want to claim I'm wrong, then the next time your CO tells you to do something (I dunno, like marching in the rain), inform him that you find his order unnecessary, and, therefore, you will not be doing as he says. Let me know how that works out for you.
Of course, you'll attempt to paint me as anti-soldier, but you'll be lying if you do. I've seen your kind try it all the time.
In the meantime, I serve my community by being a volunteer firefighter/EMT. I'm sure you're already gearing up for the usual litany of nonsense, so I'll save you the trouble: I do the same work, with the same certifications, for no pay. I do it around my regular job, as do my fellow members. Additionally, more than 75% of all firefighters nationwide are volunteer.
For the record: my daughter was recruited for West Point out of high school a few years ago, but missed out thanks to a blown out ACL. Her husband is in the Navy, and my daughter and one-year-old grandson live with us while my son-in-law is deployed.
And for "middleroad": I wouldn't be able insult people if they didn't say such stupid nonsense. Long ago, I quit trying to win over, or reason with, complete idiots. It's ironic that you try to veil your infantile "insult" in some smarmy crap about intelligence.
Maybe you should grow a pair and say what you actually mean, rather than dress it up in some touchy-feely PC tripe, designed to give you an illusion of superiority.
I'm at least smart enough to see through the BS, even the BS you're trying to pile on. It's pathetic to read your pseudo-intellectual sophistry about "intelligence" right after reading your regurgitation of the usual crap about "victory mosques." It's pathetic enough to invoke a gag reflex.
Y'all have fun, cuz I'm done with you. And you can both share your equally lame "arguments" in my "Ignore this Author" list.
It appears that Fox News/Tea Party/GOP are still working overtime. I understand that not all of the Tea Party member or GOP are like this but it seems that it is a large number that are not thinking the isue through but are only concerned about themselves.
Wait now.....MSNBC = Hitler? I have read all of your posts, but this one is really cool. Why are you having such a tantrum today? Did Mommy not give you any toys to play with when you were little? Doesn't she bring you breakfast, lunch and dinner now that you live in her basement? You're an idiot.
He should be charged with larcency and the inman that got that evil book should be tried for recieving stolen property if he knew that someone else owned it and that skaterboarder swiped it. Also isn't he pretty old to be skateboarding?
1). You're pissed off that Terry Jones didn't have a black-metal barbeque with the Qu'ran on Saturday. 2). You're pissed you're too fat and old to skateboard; more so that you missed that boat when you were a kid. 3). You're too damn broke to afford a Qu'ran and a bic lighter to begin with.
I guess my issue is why are these people attacking the Koran? What good is it going to do to burn it? All Muslems are not terrorists. Just like all Christians are not mallitia.
Burning the Koran would cause more harm than any point someone is trying to make.
Lets start a poll on the internet to build a monument on the USA Embassy Grounds, in Iraq, Afghanistan, & Pakistan, in trubute to the lives lost on 9-11-2001!
Please Check Here if FOR: _______
Please Check Here if AGAINST: ________
Please forward you selection to your nearest Senator, Congressman, Judge, in your state! Thank you for your participation.
Good idea. A monument where we put the US flag over the head of Saddam's face and pulled down the statue in Baghdad. A monument to the forces liberating Iraq.
Also, who has the correct definition of Ground Zero. Does it include every place an airplane part fell? Does it include all points, from which Ground Zero can be seen?
Does it include X number of blocks of NYC that surround Ground Zero?
What are athiests doing there?
Agreeing with the others that this guy's an idiot...
jesus himself would have stepped to save the quaran!
What are atheists doing there? Probably respecting peoples religions and speaking out against hate crimes.
We do that, you know. I may not believe in your god, but I served in the military and was willing to put my life on the line so you'd be free to worship your god as you chose.
what the hell does stepped mean
Cheering. Nobody is burning Origin of the Species - The big man in the sky days are coming to a close.
skateboarding is not a crime
So is taking a gun from a nut case stealing?
Kid deserves a medal for havin' brass balls. I'd have done the same as him, that's for damn sure.
I adore the young sometimes.
"What are athiests doing there?"
Seems like even Atheists believe that it is a despicable act to burn a holy book.
Even Atheists have more class than Right Wing Christians.
Thank you Mike S-2295631 for your service.
It probably is not a crime. The pastor was disposing of the Koran it as if it were trash. Putting your garbage out implies that you're done with those items. It isn't theft when someone takes your "trash".
Good job kid, keep up the good work.
Hate is the enemy.
#1.1: Part-owned does not equate to "controlled by"; he might have a say, but he does not have full control, as your argument suggests.
Yay to kid who stole the Koran and yay to the other protesters and a big YAY to melting pot America. lets here it for religious tolerance and respect.
If you were going to burn something to commemorate 9-11, wouldn't a Saudi flag be more appropriate?
So if our soldiers ride skateboards now, will they not be targeted?
The pastor had every right to burn the quaran..is it smart or the right thing to do? In my opinion, no it isn't but that's not the issue.
What I don't understand is that people in muslim countries are protesting and making threats againt this country because of it but they burn the bible whenever they want. And we are so scared of retaliation that we attack somebody in THIS country that has every right to burn the quaran if he chooses to.
Googling Texas law shows the theft of something with a value under $50 to be a Class C Misdemenaor, for which a citation could be issued and a fine given of up to $500. So, he could be cited, but not arrested.
No, leroy . . . Jesus would be more concerned with how people are treating each other, and not a book written by MAN.
blueinoregon: "I am not happy that the book was stolen but the intent to desecrate a religious icon is more despicable to me!!!"
Me too....like the followers of the Quran who cut off the heads of Christian missionaries.....which me thinks is a little more despicable than burning a book of words that can be reproduced with a printing press....
The only citation he should receive is for meritorious service in the defense of religious freedom and respect for diversity.
Naw, Jesus would have said "What is kerosene?"
Or, "Wow! A board with little wheels on it! Amazing!"
Lol, Dennis. Don't forget. "Damn, fire came out of that little tube!".
Nice work, Kid !!!
Irony points +15
I just love the fact that a piece of landing gear is more offensive to neo-cons than a strip club sitting next to a day care center.
I have no problem with that setup..gotta put the kids somewhere whilst I look at boobies
It is offensive, but it's NOT the same thing. You guys keep trying to make having a strip club the same thing as having a church for the religion that downed the buildings and killed 3000+ people 2 blocks away. Hmmm. Let's put that up on the scales and weigh it. Not even close.
How far away is far enough, eh? Would you feel better if they built a YMCA and a Jewish school on the same street?
Or do you just love the taste of red herring?
@Gharms:
And there you have it. Blame the religion for the fanatics. Like blaming all Christians for Terry Jones wanting to burn a Koran.
If you're silly enough to use this CAIR invented spin phrase, Victory Center isn't that much worse.
"Mosque style" Damn, these CAIR guys should be in advertising...oh wait, they are. Hilarious!
And if you act now, we'll throw in a 6oz bottle of Islamaphobic repellent!
Again - that is precisely what these radicals seek and we paying it in spades to them.
well said Exodite.
If its not a mosque, then it is not a right under freedom of religion to build it in that location.
American Spirit -
It was more directed at everyone spouting off about the first amendment then showing hypocrisy by collapsing posts they don't agree with.
But under the Constitution of the United States you can "forbid" him from build an Islamic Center based on religious bias.
correct*** you CAN'T "forbid" him from building...
It may be convenient to your argument to claim everyone is trying to "forbid" a Mosque being built. But what most are saying is they 'object' to the Mosque being built there. Huuuuuuge difference.
How is that what he said at all? That's not even close to what he said by ANY reasoning.
Good job, Jacob. I'm glad to see someone with some common sense and respect for others, no matter if they respect you or not. Not everyone needs to wallow in the mud, just because others do.
Good job is right. All evil needs to thrive is for good people to do nothing. He stepped up and did what he thought was right- rare these days!
When the acts of Terrorism began to dictate the actions of the Free, the terrorist have won. 'nuff said.
Go figure.
he is a thief just like if someone was getting ready to burn a mosque and he took the matches.
he probably saved a lot lives of our military too.
This kid showed that it's better to be right than to be on the right.
Well done. Well done indeed.
Pitchfork, don't get so dramatic. Didn't anybody ever teach you that sometimes doing the right thing doesn't always correspond to following the law?
Larceny! Theft! If what you did was right, would it also be right if I came to you and snatched your wallet or your valued skateboard?? You'd call the cops, wouldn't you? Equality means equality, this thief needs to be arrested and charged with larceny."
Would you be saying the same thing, if a Muslim were getting ready to burn a Bible?
No, the skateboarder would become a hero to the right wing.
Pitchfork, you're a loon. The morality of a thing is not defined by the legality of said thing.
Or would you lump in Nelson Mandela and Gandhi as hardened criminals?
Pitchy, you're still a loon.
Sure, he should be dealt with as a thief...and hailed as a freedom fighter.
Happy now?
Svenolafson @4.3 wrote:
@Fred the Evil: Voted up, good post~
Dam Fred couldn't have said it any better.
Amen!!!!!
Pitchfork:
I missed your calls for an investigation for Grisham's possible infractions of fire code. Maybe you posted one and I missed it, so, if you would, please provide a link to it.
Of course, it's not as simple as crying out, "Wahh, he stoled mah stuuuuuff!" but the law is the law, as you say.
Please spare me....burning a kerosene-soaked Koran in a public park doesn't require a law degree to realize something is amiss.
Would you be calling the Quran snatcher a thief if say it was a kitty cat about to be lit on fire?
I love how you lefties/athiests invokeMcVeigh's into these arguments.
McVeigh didn't blow up the Murrel building because his religion told him to do it. He blew it up because of his hatred for the US Government, hence the blowing up of a FEDERAL building. It was in retaliation to the Waco massacre. Get the facts straight. The Islamic Extremists attacked the buildings because of their religion.
Who care why McVeigh did it. It doesn't give a free pass to Islam. What, are we working on a you get one bombing, we get two beheadings system now?
Whaddayaknow??????????? Common ground after all.
Who care why McVeigh did it.
REAL Christians know better.
Sorry. Jim Jones reference, Guyana. Religious mass suicide.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Jones
1) It's not just the lefties.
2) Speak ill of any religion you want. I would prefer all.
3) Blaming all of Islam for Osama is similar to blaming all of Christianity for the Inquisition.
4) McVeigh was just a random nut job.
WOW! Wikipedia is part of the Bible now. How do I buy stock, they are huuuuge.
Ahhhh. Sorry. I mistook you for someone who could read. My bad. Bye.
Sory, my reedin aint so gud. You wer sayin you bad an bi? Bein bi ant bad, jus differnt.
Yet we'll never see this incident publicized in Islamic countries - that the majority of Americans think that burning books - no matter what they are - are stupid publicity stunts intended to inflame the passions of a particular group or people to no good end.
Thumbs up, Jacob!
Let's hope it goes viral on Youtube in the mid-east ; )
The theft thing is a red herring die-hard righties are throwing around because they're still pissed off Terry Jones backed down - as he should've.
"So does that mean I can stop by your place and snatch a book or two, without you @!$%#ing?"
By all means. If I have a book that I am going to destroy, just come get it. If it's one I want to keep, I'll let you know.
simple morality does supersedethe law.you cant pick and choose what laws you want to enforce based on politics
and at least this "kid" had the courage of his conviction to ACT directly standing up for his beliefs. He not like the coward Pastor that burns a book to send a message to people 1000's of miles away. The Pastor should go overseas and burn the Kuran if he wants his message truly felt.
Let me use an analogy to show you the error in your logic;
@blueingoregon - GREAT post. My thoughts exactly.
Umm, shouldn't you be forgiving them?
Resolution to a problem can come in all forms.
Well, I've spoken to God and his advice to me was: "Set Grisham on fire!"
My dog told me the same thing.
I spoke to God last night. He said "SHH! Quiet. I'm watching Leno."
Burning a Quran is not a crime. Stealing one is. Is it OK to steal from others if you feel its justified? If it is, Dude I want your car.
burning a quran leads to burning bibles or worse. like the churches that got burned over the weekend. there's around 1.2-1.5 BILLION muslims in the world. do you really want to have to fight ALL of them or would you rather just fight the extremists who actually hate us? if we burn the quran, they will all begin to hate us.
God works in mysterous ways, even through skateboarders!!!
Tony, you can't possibly be serious in your post, can you? So, if someone was pointing a gun at you, and I came along and took the gun away from him, would you consider that to be the same as well?
He didn't steal it. He found it in an evil persons hand and returned it to a religious center where it would be safe.
Bible or Quran is all fiction anyway. Burn both. Who cares its just paper. The Muslims always burn our flag in the streets. Who cares its just cloth.
I can throw them into my fireplace anytime I wish. No law to stop me.
If the legal owner comes forward and claims the book, then the police may want to get involved.
liberal hypocrisy, the man had a right to burn.

A nice ending to a possibly very messy problem.
That sucks Tony, but did you ever think that maybe the guy was just a bastard and not because his religion made him do it?
Tony, all of the worst of the worst in American were "Christian".
Give me a break tony. For one, just because someone moves out of state does not mean they cant still be sued. Your story sounds like a lie to me, or your just really slow. I am betting on both.
12 deleted, greg111 flaming other Viners:
You're suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.
appalachian- Look up the law.
As a fellow Texan, I'm proud of this dude. Real Texans do what's right.
You have allot of thefts in Texas do ya?
Just of your mom's panties.
I'm not sure thefts are "allotted." Oh! You mean "a lot"! Gosh...hard to grasp the meaning when the post is so imbecilic.
I sincerely hope the man files theft charges on the 23 year old skateboarder.
I know! How can we practice our hate speech now?
Dear God, please find it in your heart to help the po-po hunt down and subdue a young man who stood up for what was right.
How Christian of you, proamerica! You know you're the sort who'd have stood with the mob when they hurled stones at Christ as he hauled the cross to Golgotha.
Well, Jesus was guilty, you know...
I see a movie here, Hollywood take note. Â I even have the title for you: "Dude, Â where's my Quran?"
The individual that took the koran actually committed a crime. It's called theft.
Not that I approve of burning any book, but I also don't approve of theft.
Courts have ruled it doesn't matter that it was to be burned or to be discarded. It's theft.
Sorry, Behr...but, in order for it to be considered a crime of theft, someone would have to file charges and prove that the stolen property actually belonged to them. Until that happens...no crime.
The idiot confessed to the crime in a very public fashion. Charges do not have to be filed for the crime to be prosecuted anyway.
Jacob Isom, 23, you are the hope for a better future in the midst of this medieval horror show.
I like your perspective - What would Jesus do? Good question to ask ones self on a daily basis.
Here, here! We need a statue of him up in the Panhandle.
M. R. B.,
Easier that way - right.
they don't care about anything patriotic......till one of THEIR politicians tells them about something that they should consider unpatriotic.
Well there was Robin Hood and he was kinda cool.
and if he went before the court, I'm sure he would and in a trial of his fellow peers, I'd wonder what the outcome of that trial would be.
If he wants to steal, he should be willing to go to court and explain his motivation for the theft he committed.
How do you know he wasen't willing to do that? Does it say that in the article, or are you just making assumptions?
pitchfork
Nice rational thought
As the world goes blind...
The world is going blind? Is it growing hair on its palms, too?
Yea pro-choice, until someone chooses to do something Democrats disagree with... Way to go Hitler (MSNBC), thought I was a Schmuck...
So basically you're saying several things here:
Poor Oscar. Almost feel sorry for him. Almost.
Actually, Exodite, qurans can be had for free and anyone will loan you a Bic...
Geez, I better get to Rothko, then!
I guess my issue is why are these people attacking the Koran? What good is it going to do to burn it? All Muslems are not terrorists. Just like all Christians are not mallitia.
Burning the Koran would cause more harm than any point someone is trying to make.
Its all just good clean fun.
What good? I dunno...but it does make a statement likely to be interpreted according to the observer's preconceived point f virew...
I'm cool with this.
I wonder how many Qurans they will have inside that new mosque built at ground zero?
Just wondering............... :D
It's not at ground zero.
It's at your mom's place, RIO-lover.
If the landing gear from the first plane landed there then it is part of ground zero.
Does that mean I'm violating sacred ground when I drive across Western Texas because bits of the Columbia rained down upon the hill country?
Get a clue KID.
Was the Columbia blown up by Muslim extremists?
By the way let me guess you are 30 years old and still live with mommy and daddy right?
Actually, I live with your kid sister in sin.
Good for you my kid sister is 75 years old.
I'm glad to hear she has finaly found someone.
Now maybe she can teach you some manners.
We're all about the discipline. Plus, older women have experience~ 8D
why were they allowed to rebuilf the pentagon? shouldnt that have relocated to preserve the sactitiy of the "sacred" ground?
Daz
I don't think they plan on building a mosque at the pentagon.
There is already one INSIDE the Pentagon. Right next to where the damage was.
Dennis, don't confuse them with facts. Their heads might explode.
"If the landing gear from the first plane landed there then it is part of ground zero."
Yep, and since airplane parts hit the strip club and porn shop, next door, that makes them sacred ground also.
BTW, the Ground Zero Mosque has been destroyed. Does everyone feel better, now?
http://www.pensitoreview.com/2010/09/10/the-real-ground-zero-mosque-was-on-the-17th-floor-of-world-trade-centers-south-tower/
Also, who has the correct definition of Ground Zero. Does it include every place an airplane part fell? Does it include all points, from which Ground Zero can be seen?
Does it include X number of blocks of NYC that surround Ground Zero?
Just wondering where to draw the boundaries.
The boundaries are wherever's convenient for the neo-cons to make a political point, PuddleDuck.
