Everyone needs to pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to where this is headed. Whether you think this pastor is right, or you think he's a crazy maniac, you MUST remember to never fall for allowing constitutional rights to be subdued because of political correctness.

I see this all too often. People insist, for example, that even if the ground-zero mosque seems offensive, we MUST allow it to be built because of their rights. At the same time, those same people will turn around and say that people like this pastor should be "arrested" or that he should be "shut down" so he has no medium to voice his "idiotic" position. Rights work both ways.

The problem is that we are seeing government effectively taking away rights from people by shutting down their web-sites, intimidating people with "visits" from official government agencies and meddling with their finances.

Because there wasn't a judicial "ruling" on the matter that ran afoul of the constitution, the government has "plausible deniability" that any wrong doing was committed. And VOILA! Your rights have been undermined and no one said a thing.

So let's just toss all those passages about execution out since they are all concerning Mosaic Law. In every passage you quote that talk about God killing someone, they are all about people failing to heed God's will or attempting to deceive God.

In as much as that I agree with most of what you stated in post #1.42, I feel the need to correct you and anyone else who has the misinformed concept that Terry Jones' web site was shut down for political reasons.

As it turns out, with all his "15 minutes of fame" intervals, his sites were also publicized and it brought to attention the hate speech incorporated on his web sites. This placed him in violation of something very important, yet most do not bother reading - THE TOS, aka Terms Of Service which everyone agrees to with every site they use (including messenger services, gaming sites, blogging sites like Newsvine, etc). Sometimes they are called the Code of Honor, but that is a nice way of saying Terms of Service. He had those websites through a contractual agreement with a company called Rackspace, who upon seeing that violation of their (their server is their private property, contracted out to customers according to THEIR terms of service) TOS, they then shut down his web sites.

Sorry, there are no motivations, rumors or conspiracy theories regarding this event. Give due credit to Speaker John Boehner and Sarah Palin for averting this potentially explosive situation.

Shortly before the visit from the Florida Iman, Speaker Boehner and Sarah Palin were the only ones who had the insight to see the direct connection between Pastor Jones' planned burning of the Qoran and the building of the biggest Mosque in America at 911 ground zero. As soon as they brought that connection to Pastor Jones' attention he immediately struck a deal with the New York Iman who agreed not to build the ground zero Mosque if Pastor Jones would back down from the book burning.

Remarkably, Pastor Jones also mentioned during his interview that, "God was telling us not to burn the Qoran" and one can safely assume that was through the inspiration of the above mentioned Leaders and participants.

Makes me wonder if political speech in the US is so horrifying to US Troops and the Commander-in-Chief of the United States Armed Forces (Pres. Obama), that if the Oath of Allegiance--to Defend the United States Constitution has been removed entirely and now troops cringe in fear of upsetting Moslems.

The order also covers the burning of other holy books, including the Koran. Mohammed Vawda planned to burn the Bibles in response to a plan to burn hundreds of copies of the Koran in Gainesville, Florida. The preacher pushing the Florida book burning has backed down.

“What Mr. Vawda wanted to do is not just morally wrong but is an affront to Islam. We regard Jesus as a prophet who is part of the Koran so if he burns the Bible, he is burning part of the Koran,” said Omar.

It really sickens me when people try to hide behind religion to justify their behavior. This was a political ploy to try to blackmail Muslims from building an Islamic center "too close" to the former site of the world trade center. This is NOT representative of Christian beliefs anymore than terrorist acts represent Islam. Christ's message was one of love thy neighbor (and love thy enemy) as you love the Lord. I believe in God, but I do not put my faith in most churches as they are run by people... and too many like to mold their doctrines to fit their own agendas.

BTW, didn't Christ command that we build NO temples? That the temple was within each of us? That where two or three are gathered together in his name, there would be he? well, I have not visited Jones' site, so I can't say what is on it, but I HAVE seen how the magic term "hate speech" is used to justify denying others of their free speech rights similar to the ways I listed in post #1.42.

There seems to be consensus about there being two kinds of muslims: radicals and non-radicals.The radicals fly planes onto buildings and the non-radicals don't. The non-radicals don't agree with the actions of radicals (again, this is their claim), but they don't EVER publicly condemn their violent acts, either.

The ONLY thing this "pastor's" marlarkey accomplished is making people turn AGAINST religion - just like many of his congregation have decided to leave because of this incident. Usually, when people display crazy behavior like this, it Never is the first or last time.

According to his own daughter, this "pastor" has already tried to turn a "religion-based" congregation in Germany into a "cult", but was promptly kicked out for it. She also indicated that he was out of touch with reality, and needs "mental help."

That speaks VOLUMES about his state of mind and his "character."

I find it humorous that Obama can take exactly opposite positions at the same time.

To Imam Rauf, he says; "You have the legal right to build the Mosque at Ground Zero, and we, as Americans, should not interfere with that right, even though it would be insensitive".

To Pastor Jones, he says; "You have the legal right to "burn the Quran", but you'd better not because it's insensitive, and we, as Americans, should do everything we can to prevent you from doing so".

While this man is by all accounts a moron, he shouldn't even be on our minds. The only people who should even be remotely concerned about him are those who live in Gainesville, Florida. Even then, I'm not so sure. This man played a starved media like an expert. They elevated him and his "international" Quran burning event to an international level, never questioning his motives. He was not news, he was a way to boost ratings and advertisement revenues.

Yesterday, when he falsely claimed to have brokered a deal with Park51 to move the "Ground Zero Mosque" project, he blatantly lied to the media. There was no such deal, but did the media question or challenge him? No. Instead, they put the onus on the Park51 people. The media's narrative claimed it was Park51 who reneged on the fantasy deal. My point is this man did not do all of this by himself. He would have stayed obscure had it not been for a media starved for the next shiny story.

Our so called Media nowdays is a joke. They dredge up some local story somewhere and blow it up into a national event and then all the talking heads and politicians and analysts get hold of it and call it "news". Then the religious folks get involved and threats start flying.

The national media most likely wanted the burning to take place then when the various protests turned violent they could call for restrictions on the publics right of free speach and other freedoms. Of course they would expect to retain the right to say what they wanted.

I have friends who've 'been there/done that', and some eventually gave up and came home, cancelling projects in the millions of dollars because they just couldn't put up with it anymore. There are tiny "store front s0-called churches" that have no affiliation with any denomination, even though they called themselves Baptists, Methodists etc. I taught school for many years and some of you wouldn't believe the "beliefs" that some children expressed in class. If you went to youtube right now and typed in "koran burning" theres already videos of people burning a koran. The only difference i can see between them and Terry Jones is that they aren't the pastors of a church.

Part of me agrees with what you're saying, but frankly, the RADICALS who follow Islam and who might be prone to use this as a motivational tool, don't need much in the way of motivation. In their world, every waking hour is spent thinking of ways to please Allah and to kill infidels and capitalists Christians and Jews. But, America has to back it's foundation in Christianity. It's one thing to be open to other faiths and to allow free and open faith, no matter the religion, but it's another to bend over backwards to accomodate (at the highest levels) an "outside" faith (Muslim), while giving Christianity the short-shrift every chance it gets.

When the founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, they did mention God, however there is no mention of Christ, neither is their a mention of Moses, Abraham which are the pillars of Judaism... There was a reason for that. They acknowledge God as Supreme being and Creator, but did not want to include religion rhetoric to the discussion of the birth of our nation. Everytime I hear "judeo-christian principles", I cringe, because that's not true. I am a born again christian, and even though I dont have the education that most here have, I read, I research, and I understand things very well. I agree totally with you David - people should get off their backsides and read the texts they are criticising. I don't agree that most people would want to or should be asked to learn Classical Arabic in order to read the Quran, though I assume from your comment that you are a fluent reader already - there are some excellent translations in English and their are some seriously difficult passages in some of the law texts (ever tried to read an English law text? yep - difficult too). You have a point about considering how the books are used today - but you also have to be mindful that these are products of former times and very often what we take them to mean is seen through the filters of our own times (just look at what we say about Revelations and Nostrodamus today compared with 150 years ago!). In cases where people not only believe in a god but believe that that god was the author, any use which is not what god intended must therefore be a blasphemy - e.g. the Bible and the Quran are both said to be such works so logically in these belief systems both should be treated as sacred by both Christians and Muslims unless you decide you know better than this god what is right.

Note: Our standard rifle is the M21/M25 (semi auto range 1200m) variable power day night optics, not the plastic short ranged jungle warfare 1960s designed M16 (semi auto range 350m) or the M4 (CAR15)(semi auto range 250m). Long barrelled Chinese AKM (semi auto range 1000m), Modern SVD with modern Russian Federation day night Optics of Chinese Manufacturer (range 1,200m), current version AK47 (semi auto range 450m). To counter the SVD we use a tripod mounted M2 Browning with electro optical day night optics (semi auto range 1,900m).

Our big problem are the USSR 12.7mm Machineguns (range 2,000m). They use this and RPG-7s (range 800m) first to shoot at us knowing we cannot shoot until shot (as the USMC found out the to the south, deaths.).

Plastic weapons are not durable enough, the machined tolerances of the M16/M4/M110 do not have the "slop" factor and malfunction at the worst times (in the middle of a fire fight). The small diameter aluminum gas tube above the barrel (under the handguards) requires an armorer to completely unclog (remove for cleaning, including clearing the hole in the barrel under the front sight), we used to use a four foot piano wire, still required to almost completely disassemble the weapon while being shot at. The M21/M25 requires a user to use a wrench to remove the plug under the barrel. The AKM, SVD, AK-47 you flip a latch on the right side above barrel to remove the gas piston for cleaning.

So all of you believing that this Holy Koran (Quran) Burning put us in greater jepordy, nope, how about getting rid of the thousands of privileged US Civilians (using lots resources and money, including requiring additional US Military Security), train and equip (see above) the US Military Conventional Warfare Forces up to US Military Asymmetric Warfare (hint this is an Asymmetric War not Conventional War, especially Mountain Warfare (mountain climbing) and Winter/Arctic Warfare (skiing, ice crampons, snowshoeing, etc.)), kick Eikenberry and Holbrooke in the arse to renegotiate the UN Conventional Rules of Warfare (Rules of Engagement)(General Petraeus cannot do anything and can only look for loopholes like General McChrystal), stop sending US Military with NO Combat Experience send them to low risk low intensity Iraq first (one small newbie mistake gets everyone around them killed here at Afghanistan), train the USAF and USN to do US Military Ground Combat (Asymmetric Warfare) instead of the April 2009 Defense Budget Cuts (instead of kicking them out of the US Military, at least you do not have to start from scratch (Boot/Basic Training, etc.).

All religions are filled with hypocrites. Every one of them. Who among them hasn't violated their own rules because it suited their desires at the time.

I think if you could look into the hearts and minds of most people who say they believe in god--you'd see that they don't, not really.

If they believed, they'd be to afraid to commit sins.

That depends on your definition of sin.You can believe in God without believing in religion.It is religious groups and books that dictate what sin is.Some of them I agree with some not so much
