For those of you who wonder why it seems like a double standard to be asked to not burn their sacred book when they burn one sacred book of ours and our flag, I'll remind you of something I learned in kidergarten which seems to have been forgotten. I am a very committed christian, but find that people using God or religion for the sake of hate and discord, disgusts me. And to be on this site and try to use scriptures to justify ones hatred, bigotry, and self righteousness is a sad misuse of the scriptures and in the end does nothing but put people who do believe in Christ in a very, very bad light.

Now with this being stated, I also think that this is as much a political issue as it is a religious issue. You know what? The need to grow up in move into the twenty first century and find any religious violence unacceptable instead of finding that it is OK unless it happens to them. We are no longer in the middle ages where religious hatred and violence is acceptable and they need to grow up and follow us there or be left behind. So we will find this act outrageous (and it is), but they in turn need to find the violence the commit towards people that convert to Christianity is unacceptable, the violence and lack of rights that they give to women is unacceptable, and the attitude that all faiths are beneath them and if they see any religious relics (such as the Buddha's in Afghanistan) they should be preserved for their historical value and not in ignorance and intolerance destroyed. And last they need to have the same respect for people of other faiths that they demand and see as their rights to have themselves. In other words; Grow up.

It was Paul the Apostle who said, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Romans 12:21) And also The Apostle Peter in 1 Peter 3:9, "Do not repay evil for evil, or insult for insult". I guess I fail to see how burning a Quaran, or Koran, follows those two scriptures. Indeed I challenge anyone to produce a New Testament scripture specifically allowing the destruction of the "holy" writings of another religion, let alone a command.

And I also am a "Pentecostal" Christian, Spirit-filled, and know that once someone says "God told me", you cannot mount an effective argument, unless it contradicts the Bible. To you and me, this action of burning the Koran does indeed violate the spirit of the two verses I listed above. But for the sake of argument, how do you know that God did not say "Go and do this"? We do know that God does not violate His word, however those with agendas, not trained in discipline and submission to God twist and interpret the Bible according to that agenda. For this reason Jesus will say to those who have lived their lives in this manner, "Depart from Me, for I never knew you".

This little 50-person church, hardly a blip on the map of Christiandom, not accountable to any but their own desire to follow God, and their ability to hear His voice, came up with this plan. Now, consider this: We live in a free society, and because we live in a free society, this Imam in New York is excercising his rights in a free society to build an offensive structure and enterprise a scant two blocks from where others of his religion murdered over 3,000 of our fellow Americans. If this Imam truly is a man of peace, then he would be a voice for Muslim sorrow over 9/11. Yet I cannot recall anything that he has said. Nothing clings to mind, concerning condemnation of the acts on that terrible day. And so he will build his mosque.

Now, apply the same rule to Rev. Jones. We live in a free society, and this Pastor is excercising his rights in a free society to do that which is highly offensive to many people, world-wide.

So, what is the difference between the two? I offer this....nothing. Except. When you start talking about adding God and what He wants into the mix, there is very much a difference. We of the Christian faith are to "overcome evil with good." What is it that wins hearts? Is it the point of a sword? You may garner obedience, but you will not win heart-felt allegiance. Is it not love that wins hearts? Now, don't get me wrong. "Love does not rejoice in evil, but rejoices with the truth" (1 Corinthians 13) If Jesus is our example, speaking God's truth while performing incredible acts of kindness and mercy, what are we doing burning Korans? How is that showing truth and love to others? How is that overcoming evil with good? Are we overcoming radical Islam by burning Korans? No, we are enraging them to commit more evil acts.

Pastor Jones is bound by a different rule than the Muslims, or even those who don't know God. I really hope and pray that he lays aside every agenda, and follows God no matter the cost. I'm not seeing a whole lot of the fingerprint of God in this Koran-burning stunt. It smells more like someone seeking attention.

But the Holy Spirit (Ghost) is none of these. It is no wonder that those (holy spirit)ually-starving and not yet blessed with the grace of faith are so contemptuous, even jealous, of those seekers seeking the Kingdom of God, first of all. It is no wonder that the wise seek true faith first, and trust that anything else that is really needed or important during the earthly span will be added with no need to obsess about it. It is essential that Christians all over the world under 24/7 attack (from false religions and civil ruling authorities lacking a true and life-fostering vision of the human condition) not give up on their faith when they need it the most. I hope something I write will be of encouragement to all us struggling Christians anywhere on the globe, knowing "it is well." And to those still seeking, I invite, "Be still and know" that God is God. Set aside some time to just sit quietly and invite God in.

The point you are missing is, the Constitution also applies to, and protects, the right for Mr Jones to burn the Quaran (or as I now like to call it, the Quarap...my right to call it this, also protected by the Constitution, incidentally!)

What makes up a "bad" religion? 25% who wish and actively seek harm on others? 10%, 5%, 2%, what is the magic number? we have a 10% unemployment rate and everyone agrees that it is ridiculous. could we not say the same percentages there. Until they clean up the religion a lot more than they have currently, modify their thinking to become a bit more hospitable to alternate beliefs, and start cleaning house inside their own churches; this will always be a problem. There are no pages regarding "sharia law." In the cases of the articles about the Saudis burning Bibles, recall that the Wahhabi are a kind of extremist themselves. It is a fairly easy thing to stop or at least reduce. Simply stop trying to smuggle Bibles into the country. There is a limit to how many Bibles can be carried without violating the law. One per family is the limit.

Many of the Mutawa'een are very zealous but are quite illiterate in some areas. They could not tell the difference between a Qur'an and an Arabic Bible if their lives depended upon it. I dare say that quite a few copies of the Qur'an have been burned in such raids. Quite ironic, isn't it?

Another thing to do is make sure that your religious texts are formatted like copies of the Qur'an. These tend to fare better in the raids. It is not hard to do with a little time and patience.

But, if it is a Bible make sure that you still stick to the one-per-family rule so they don't think you are trying to smuggle in Bibles for the purpose of proselyting. I can appreciate where you are going with this one, and if they were looking to take the books FROM the people and burn them or if the person was to steal the only copy of my letter (or recording as you noted), then it would bother me greatly...

But...if you have a xerox copy of my letter and you decide to burn it...go nuts - it's your copy...you own it.

Sigh. It's comments like these which make me shake my head. Let's get something clear. The USA is not the same thing as Christianity. We have a large christian population here, but there is a seperation of church and state.

Muslims around the world object to our foreign policies and general beliefs as a country. This is why they burn american flags. An equal response would be to burn their flags in retribution. But that would require americans to collective care about a symbolic retaliation. Let alone actually bother to identify which specific countries' flags needed burned.

Seperate to this issue, the Florida extremists want to burn the holy texts of the muslim faith. More than that, they don't want it to be just a private affair of religious self expression. Instead they decided to publicize the process in order to gain more followers and potential political power. The subtext that I'm getting from their actions is that they want Quaran burning to become part of the 9/11 celebration process.

Why would this hack muslims off? It would be like Iran organizing a "burn the Bible" book burning holiday to intentionally attack the christian faith. If Iran's crazy leaders set this type of event up as a public event, then there would be a very real emotional response for christians around the world. Unless you're intentionally looking to start a fight (or potential religious war), you should never directly attack symbols of someone's faith. And of course, that is exactly what these Florida nuts are doing. And since the USA isn't actually stopping them from doing something so foolish on one of our national holidays (since it goes against our core beliefs), it gives the impression that the USA silently approves of this action (despite what we may verbally claim).

The president is the one who is putting our soldiers in harms way. Next thing we know Obama is gonna tell us being Christians is putting our men in danger, so we should stop doing that to! This is america if he wants to, he can and should. And Wiser with Age, it is nothing like Iran making a holiday to do it. This is one man in the country, not our president burning it. Way to try to claim to be wiser with age but then trying to prove a point in the most extreme way! If there was a cleric or what ever they call them in Iran that burned the Bible, guess what.... we would never find out because the media knows there would be no over reaction and they would not care.

Yes, radical Muslims burn American flags, but they don't just stop there - they kill people for being Americans or for speaking out against Islam. An equal response would be to kill Arabs or Afghans or Muslims just for being Arab or Afghan or Muslim, but we don't do that. In comparison, burning the Quran is a very restrained response. And of course it is a public response - American flags were not burned behind closed doors, and the executions of American soldiers and reporters were taped and sent to us for a reason.

The US can't stop this preacher from burning the Quran - this is a right protected by the Constitution, whether we agree with it or not. I am a Christian, and I support the right of anyone to burn the Bible. I personally don't agree with it (nor the burning of the Quran, for that matter), but there is no law against it, nor should there be. This is also separation of church and state - it is not up to government to protect the symbols of one religion when members of another religion decide to destroy such symbols which are legally in their possession. The government can neither approve nor disapprove; it quite simply has no say in the matter.

In total agreement with you JennyZ. A lot of people have been ranting lately that we are a Christian nation. I find that idiotic; this proves my point; if we were a Christian nation we would behave like Christ and not react with hate to every slight provocation.

One would think that being a nation of immigrants, we would have a better perspective on the freedoms we are allowed and choose to use our time more wisely than wasting time, money and lives throwing childish tantrums (the burning, the rants against our fellow Americans who happen to be peaceably practicing their religion as the constitution allows). Here's an idea: go help your neighbor; go invest your time in helping someone else.

If things are good, it is because you prayed and believed enough. If things go wrong, it is god's will. You must have done something to deserve it. You cannot have it both ways. You either support the Rights or not. If you start making exceptions then you open the door for suppression of all Rights for all. We may not like what he is doing but he has a right to do it and many more have lost their lives defending that right than will because of this man's actions. Young men and women are getting killed everyday and we all know that another terrorist attack is always on the horizon.
