This subject pertains to religion, but also to human emotions. Sure the Muslim's have the right to build a church center near grounds zero, but they also need to feel for the emotions of the people of NYC.

A religion should have compassion for its emotional effects on the local surroundings. I can't speak for others, but building this next to ground zero may feel like having a person that robbed your house move in next to you. Its a lose lose.

Sure the constitution protects religious beliefs, but the reality is that this location seems more of a jab at the U.S. more then anything else.

Well, yeah, I think that instead of building any mosque, church, synagogue or temple, a hospital, library or school ought to be built but if people want to build such edifices to support their belief system then the first amendment allows them too. First of all, as an American I can assure you that I am not ignorant. My ability to voice an opinion without resorting to petty name calling is proof of that. However; excitable people who, in the heat of a debate induced frenzy, that lose their power of logical thinking, and find themselves spewing explatives in order to muscle the point of the discussion to their favor, might be considered ignorant.

That being said, I would like to say that I believe with every fiber of my being that all Americans have the right to worship any religion they so choose. Also, I doubt that most people on either side of the isle would disagree with that.

On the one hand, there are those who feel that Americans that follow the Muslim faith are being discriminated against because of their chosen religion. Thus, building a Mosque anywhere to suit their choosing is being questioned unfairly.

Just an Australian who knows nothing of your politics, a little of your way of life (visited your wonderfull country on a few occasions) and does not have an opinion on who or what you should worship (to each their own, or live and let live). As someone who watched that terrible event unfold (9/11) and openly wept for the people involved particularly the brave Firemen, Police and others involved in the rescue operations on that fatefull day both in NY and Pentagon I would like to say this, to put a Mosque so close to Ground Zero IS insensitive, I know under your constitution Muslims or any other recognised religion has the right to do so. As it should be! I just think that the repocussions of this (if it goes ahead) will bring out the worst in some people and worsten an already bad situation. I have a few Muslim friends and I am sure that the HUGE majority are good people (so please do not Tar Everyone with the same Brush). I dont think you have to be the sharpest tool in the shed to know what I am saying is a real possibility.

The end to this controversy is to declare the entire area in a 6 block radius (remains have been found 6 blocks away from ground zero) a national historical landmark... That puts all building under the control of the National historical Society with their very very very conservative restoration requirements for building.
