One could also mention that after 7 centuries of Muslim rule, Spain still had strong Christian and Jewish communities, even in Muslim ruled areas. But when Ferdinand and Isabella completed the reconquest of Spain in 1492, practically their first move was to outlaw both Islam and Judaism.

All religions have, on occasions, been used to initiate violence. Islam is no different. These sporadic terrorist activities around the world may escalate into a full scale religious war, forcing moderates into one camp or the other, but this does not have to happen.

Don't say typical Americans. I agree with you for the most part. But they are not typical Americans. Typical Americans help people in times of crisis. We just turn a blind eye to the activities of our government and drink red and blue kool-aid from the so called news networks in our country. I am from Eastern NC, born in New Jersey, and consider myself to be a fairly open minded "typical American". I do not want to bomb any other country, I do not wish harm on civilians, I do try to send money to the poor and see to my neighbors. From what I've seen, most of my neighbors do the same when they can. While I can't say the same for all areas of New Jersey, for the most part the same holds true. I don't think there was an arrogance to it, maybe more of an attitude that this is the best country in the world and we're proud of it. Could be arrogance, could be just pride. Either way, if it's arrogance then I'm guilty of it too. I don't wish these people discarded and do have a care for what is going on in that part of the world. I do think the situation there deserves attention, but the US should keep it's distance because of what happened there in 1992. No sence in repeating the mistakes of the past.

Now that I've gotten past that, I am wondering about your origins. Born in the US? If so, you seem to have a perticular distain for (possibly) yourself. If this is the case, I would suggest proffessional help before you do something that lands you in the news in a bad way. You being American and all. Or maybe you were born across the border. What is a typical American? I'm of primarily Irish heritage with a little American Native thrown in. I live in the South and am a conservative Republican. I am a Catholic that does not practice, yet have no problem with anybody else's faith as long as it doesn't interfer with mine. When I lived in the North (Chicago of all places) I was a conservative, at least I voted that way even though the person I voted for wasn't always a Republican. JD, the problem with sending in subs, is that the typical MK46 II, III, & IV only arm after 500 feet out of the tube, and they would have difficulty homing in on the small fast boats that the pirates are using. Those little boats tend to be very maneuverable. The thing to do is follow the fast boats back to the mother boats and sink them, after verifying that they are indeed connected to piracy. Benjamin Franklin answered a woman after the signing of the constitution that they had just established a republic for as long as the citizens could maintain it. You should likely read a history book or two. Germany suffered the worse of the nations post WWI with the reparations and the worldwide economic depression. Life in Germany was so bad that it was cheaper to burn money for heat than it was to buy the wood. Germany looked to a savior, someone who would help them out of their mess, someone who would resolve the wrongs of the nation and put the country back together. Hitler blamed the West, blamed the Jews and the Communists. And from there, we know what happened.

Germany was saddled with a disproportionate amount of reparations after the WWI that basically bankrupted their economy. The Treaty of Versailles effectively divided the country and required that Germany pay amounts that, by virtue of interest payments, would be impossible for them to settle. The economy was devastated and the German Deutsche Mark experienced a massive failure. Germany was also not allowed to rearm their military beyond that of a defensive nature. Basically, they got hosed. That being said.......

If you know anything about the history of Adolf Hitler, you'd know that he was a depressed, oppressed, borderline schizophrenic (Momma's Boy) who attemted a career as an artist. He attempted several tries to get accepted at the German Academie of Art, and was repulsed repeatedly, being told his art was amateurish, typical, and without much talent. He lived in Vienna in squalor, selling his paintings for a modest income, all the while fueling his burgeoning hate of the Jews, for whom he laid fault as the reason for his being unsuccessful. In prison for minor crimes, he began writing his manifesto, Mein Kampf ("My Struggle"). In it, he layed the groundwork for his persecutory leanings against the Jews, and the beginnings for what would later become "The Final Solution". Through his flamboyant and very effective oratory skills, he was able to convince the German public that they had been persecuted under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, and that the German people needed to rise against the oppression of the people that wished to keep them down. He used his party to intimidate and eliminate all political opposition, and then began his persecution of the Jews starting with the institution of the Nuremburg Laws (which effectively ended all rights for Jews to own businesses and own anything of consequence). The passage of these laws culminated Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass), where a pogrom was instituted to confiscate Jewish businesses, schools, synagogues, etc. The mob mentality resulted in German mass hysteria that destroyed most Jewish establishments and resulted in many deaths, beatings, and torture that included rape of jewish women and children. The German authorities, although present during most incidents, stood idly by and watched, only responding when a German establishment was in danger from destruction. He skillfully mislead the German public into a war footing by intentionally burning the Reichstag and blaming it on the Jews, and along with a German politician being murdered in Paris by a Jew, he used propoganda to turn public sentiment firmly against the Jewish poulation. In September 1939, he invaded Poland after signing a non-agression pact with The Soviet Union. That pact was later broken by Hitler and the German Armed forces became entrenched in an unwinnable two-front war with the Soviets on one side, and the allies (US, Britain) on the other. Meanwhile, the ghettos, mass deportations, and the killing of 85%-95% of the Jewish population in the German occupied areas took place. He committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin in August of 1945. Good riddance.

I walk the middle in this issue because I do see Islam as the biggest threat to the West, and because I believe in our country and our Constitution. However, I'm at a loss as to how we can keep ourselves (nevermind Somalia, that should be someone else's problem) safe domestically from Islamic terrorism without undermining our own laws. One could argue that getting the US to undermine its constitution is one of the first steps in chipping away at democracy and breeding dissent among Americans and, thus, opening the door for something else. What can we do to protect ourselves and save face as a republic of free men?

chuck wagon..Islam isn't a threat. The people who practice that religion need to open their mouths and stand against the violence. Just as in the early days of Christianity when penances were bought and sold by the Catholic church and its members, Martin Luther took issue with certain tenets of faith. People feared speaking out because excommunication was the ultimate consequence of daring to publicly humiliate the men of the church.

Many Muslims are afraid. They aren't as sure of their freedom of speech in this country like born and bred Americans. Because their religion holds so tightly to its orthodoxy and leaders, they fear speaking out against their religion. To a Muslim, speaking against Islam is the same as speaking against God. Recognize that Islam isn't modern day Christianity.

I hear what you're saying, and I agree that we must not let outside forces lead us to change our own cherished values. However, I lived for 20 years in a Muslim country and I will tell you this: they would never tolerate a Christian church in their country, especially under the same circumstances. I think they would be laughing themselves all the way to the mosque, seeing how foolish and gullible and - gasp - womanlike these Americans are. And rest assured, YOU would not be welcome into their mosque. Oh, didn't you know? Christian churches are open to all, but you are not allowed into a mosque, infidel that you are. And much of the terrorism we are experiencing comes from the madrasas connected to the mosques. How can we allow this indoctrination to occur right under our noses?

Peace and Islam are a contradiction in terms. If you look at a map, you will see that much of the conflict being waged today is where Islam is bumping into another religion -- Nigeria comes to mind. It is the practice to push, shove and bully other people into Islam.

As Geert said, the fatalism of Muslims is what holds them down. I have seen drivers throw up their hands and commend themselves to Allah when a dangerous situation occurs. How can you progress when you rely on the whims of nature and physics to guide even the most basic functions? And another observation I have made: Arabs are brilliant students. Many came to Europe and our country as students to then go back to their own countries to apply what they learned. But where they fail is in the application -- there is something that prevents them from transferring their book learning to real life situations. Again, is it the fatalism? One wonders.

Where I lived, women were put in the back of the pick up trucks, along with the sheep, while the front passenger seat either went empty or filled by a young male child. Women were hit by cars as they stepped off the curb because they couldn't see beyond the eye hole of their head-to-toe covering. Women were relegated to the back of the house if we ever went to visit a household -- you would never see them. Women lost their children if divorced. Women were routinely beat by husbands in our neighborhood -- you could hear them screaming. Women were diagnosed by doctors upon the husbands' description of their ailments -- women were not allowed to be seen by male doctors. I don't see how this can ever be a progressive society when fully one half of the population is regarded as inferior and held slave. I thank God every day that I was born an American.

If people keep on treating this war with kid's gloves and with such high in the clouds sentiment of spreading civilization in a time of war, then I am afraid the whole thing will overwhelm us all. Such a sentiment as your's is nothing but a luxury that the world can ill-afford at this stage. If you think that all the successful wars that your country has fought in history had been fought on the premise of human rights and other hifalutin sentiments then you are badly mistaken. Only maximum, overwhelming effort will bring quick result and consequently conserve the lives of your soldiers. When your enemy is finally brought to heel then you can talk of civilizing him if you must. If it is really true that the vast majority of Muslims are "MODERATE peace-loving" people, why don't we hear their voices ringing out against the extremists? If it is true that "all moderate Muslims are disgusted by what these extremists have done" why are they all so quiet?

Well, they seem to be emulating sura 9 very accurately and literally. I know there are these rationalizations where that sura doesn't actually mean what it seems to say... You know...that it was just meant for that occasion or that it doesn't apply to living in Somalia today...

The Somalians seem to just read it and obey. They are in eternal warfare with the enemies of Islam... and they don't know all those rationalizations about sura 9 any better than I do.

You know... you see violent scriptures like s9 and then you see violent Muslims obeying the violent scriptures.,,,

It seems we are to believe that true, peaceful, tolerant Islam is only practiced in the US (of all places) and that everywhere else, people have Islam all wrong.

They are in conflict in accordance to their scriptures... Heck, anybody can read it and see what it says... These Taliban guys are exactly about religion....which is why they dynamited those giant Buddhas.

You know... if you have scriptures that are violent and then folks following the scriptures... you can say the scriptures mean something else... but you have to convince "The Students" (Taliban)

I agree with you that the Nation of Islam is out for world conquest, but to outlaw if from western society? Does that not sound like what they are looking for? The outlawing and destruction of Christianity/Juedism/Budism/Spiritualism or Rockworship (whatever there).

Currently, yes there are no other religions that do that. However, there were the crusades, Salem witch hunts, and plenty of other examples from history where Christianity wasn't quite so Christlike.
