Apparently NO ONE knows how to run a prison the proper way. How else does one explain the fact that we continue to stuff our prisons with prisoners who immediately become "recidivists-in-training"? my first thought was how unexpected that they were captured alive as so many cops are trigger happy and then I said to self that there will be many complaining about the cost of a trial and how much money would be saved if the cops simply shot them.

There are Federal prisons, but this was not one of them either so your statement makes zero sense. The federal prisons still are not run by the department of homeland security. On another note. Sorry, but you're totally wrong on this one. Arizona has had private prisons since 1993, and neither Brewer nor Napolitano was governor then.

If you must assign blame to those in the past, then it must be placed at the feet of the Arizona legislators. Several times over the past years there have been bills proposed (the last one was in 2008 and proposed by Napolitano, by the way) to make private prisons more accountable. Not one of those bills passed.

The question remains as to why the alarms on the fence were not fixed. If the alarms were going off frequently enough to cause the prison employees to ignore them, that's something that needs to be closely examined. Why was this not addressed by either the private corporation or the state Department of Corrections? Apparently there had been an inspection by DOC shortly before the escape.

So very right re: 2nd ammendment. I'll take it a step further- this is a good example of why it should be legal to carry in state and federal parks. As long as the right to carry is prohibited in these vast, remote areas anyone in those areas legally is a sucker waiting for something bad to happen. People go out looking to get "away from it all" without realizing that your all by yourself out there... and the hardened criminals of the world don't follow the posted rules.

First prisoner transport is only for Federal Inmates. Second, they are responsible for tracking down and capturing some of the most wanted Federal Fugitives, in air security on our commercial flights, to name only a few of their services. Yes, heads up work by the game warden, and hats off to the County Sheriff, but you really need to look more into what they do. Don't minimize the risk they put themselves in or the service these people do for us every day. Thanks pal!

I read the article and it said the two were custody by a SWAT team at the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, didn't say anything about Apache county Sheriff.

I don't know what Pakistani prisons are like, but I would imagine that life in their their medium security prisons is likely far harder than in our maximum security prisons. Check the record this administration has doubled the number of illegals deported over the Bush admin but that is not the answer. Until reasonable penalties are imposed on business that hire them they will go nowhere. When a law is passed such as Arizona's they just move to another state. We have a large department called Homeland security and documentation can be easily checked and no illegal should be able with false documents to ever get a job in these United states. Dude, the fence works for Korea, because no one wants to go there. If we build a massive fense it will not solve our problem. Throwing billions away to protect the border and seas is useless. We need a true ID checking system, and we need all states to ban the issueing of ID, or State drivers licenses without Proof of Citizenship. And if you have a Visa, your license expires the same date as the Visa. This isn't friggen rocket science. Its just logic. Take away the incentive for illegals to be here and they will leave. To do this it means you would need to hold employers responsible for ensuring they are hiring legals. If, they fail enough times they get shut down. Fixing the border isn't the real solution. It might slow people down, but they'll just find another way such as a tunnel, or by boat in the Gulf of Mexico, or the Pacific.

Wondering how this all got twisted into the illegal immigration issue, but you made the comment about visa and driver's license expiring on the same date. That is the case in AZ. A lady I know let her's expire in the last couple of weeks, and cannot get her license renewed until she renews her visa. It's a very good idea. She even tried to get a temporary DL while she awaits her appointment with the immigration department, but the MVD turned her down flat. Good for them; she just blew it off, and shouldn't be given any special treatment for that. She got an earful from me about it, and I flat told her that I will not help her by driving her around, running errands for her, etc., for being irresponsible. She's a friend, and I would be happy to help her in other ways (like any friend would), but I will not enable a person who blantantly ignores the priviledges afforded those who are here by the generosity of our government. It irks me the most that I have told her again and again that if she needs help taking care of her business, and doesn't know how to do it, I am there for her. Ironically, when she is faced with the reprecussions of her failures, she always finds a way to resolve them; usually by getting all the help she needs from friends, co-workers, her boss, and even her ex-husband.

I don't expect a free pass when I mess up, and neither should she. I am a citizen, and I have responsibilities, too. I'm far from perfect, but when I screw up, I don't expect others to bail me out. So whether this woman fails to meet her obligations and is inconveniences by it, or two low-life criminals are facing the death penalty, they are all guilty of things they did to themselves. They should pay accordinly.

Yes, but there is a bill in the Arizona legislature (expected to pass and be signed into law) that would turn ALL the Airy-Zona prisons over to the private prison companies.

By federal corporate law, those companies boards are responsible first to making sure the shareholders interests are defended, which means the companies must try to make a profit. And how to make a profit?
- Overfill the facilities;
- Put high risk prisoners in a medium-risk prison;
- Don't spend money on maintenance (such as the alarm system) unless and until forced to do so;
- Etc., etc., etc., etc.

Geez - there's the conundrum! The government is NOT a good management agency, and the private corporate sector, although qualified, is there to make a buck. What we need is a combination of the two - an organization that is fiscally responsible, yet fully responsible to do whatever possible to maintain the integrity of the prison. Your guess is as good as mine for who that organization is.

I disasgree with your idea that the private sector is somehow better at managing things than the public sector. Inefficiencies have nothing to do with public vs. private -- they are a function of size. (Economists call this "diseconomies of scale.") If you've ever worked for an extremely large company, you'd know exactly what I was talking about. I mean REALLY big, like AT&T, Exxon, Microsoft, etc. These companies waste HUGE amounts of money. They take twice as long to do anything as a small company would. And they are filled with thousands of employees who get paid huge salries to basically do nothing.

The solution is not to privatize, the solution is to work on efficiency strategies. After all, this prison was privately run, and that didn't work out so well, did it?

Efficiency strategies with a large entity such as an AT&T or the federal/state government is a waste. They're simply too big, the bureaucracy is too large to overcome, and senior management usually has lost focus on the minutia that often times determines an organizations overall success. I know this first-hand as I've been in higher management roles for the past 20 years with 2 very large multi-national companies (each with over 250,000 employees).

Again, I'm not saying that outsourcing to a private company is the right way to go in today's environment. A private company is too concerned about making a buck and making bucks for their shareholders. However, it has been demonstrated time and again that the private sector is far more efficient than the public sector. This is not a bash to the public sector workers - it's just gotten too big and bureaucratic. Besides, private sector companies generally can focus on one thing they're good at - in this case (or maybe not) operating a prison.

I still say the RIGHT answer is to outsource the daily operations of prisons to private firms who specialize in this, but AREN'T out to make a buck.

I live in a neighborhood where two "illegals" regularly take care of an elderly couple whose legal adult children can't seem to find the time in their busy schedule. They aren't paid. They just do it out of compassion. I'm also from a neighborhood where an undocumented young man born in Mexico has served with distinction for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan. Oh, and did I mention four U.S. born citizens were involved in a prison break in Arizona and apparently the murder of a couple in New Mexico.

The soldier born in Mexico,because of his service deserves to be given citizenship. He has paid his dues. Those who have done nothing but be a drain on our society and commit crimes in addition to being in this country illegally need to be shown the door out of this country.

I don't know if it still is true today, but when I served in the Marine Corps any foreign national who served in the American military was given a permanent green card and a chance to become an American citizen even if they crossed the border illegally to join. Also they could become citizens in 5 year instead of the usual 7years for every one else.

Several weeks ago three nuns were traveling up I95 here in Virginia when they were involved in an accident. One of the nuns was killed the other two severely injured. The car that hit them was being operated by an "illegal" that was intoxicated. Come to find out it was his third DUI, he had no driver's license and did I mention he was here ILLEGALLY!!! When are you bleeding hearts going to learn that ILLEGAL means ILLEGAL, if you were caught doing something ILLEGAL do you think you would GET OFF with a slap on the wrist???? The answer to that is HELL NO!!!

The problem is that we've got great people who were born and raised in the good ol' USA, and we've got morons who were naturally born here in the States and are US Citizens, and we've got "good illegals" and "not-so-good illegals" from OTHER COUNTRIES (not just Mexico) here in the States. One thing is for sure - building a fence is NOT the answer...too easy to get around/over/through. Another thing for sure is that any undocumented person here illegally who commits a felony crime DEFINITELY gets shipped out - no questions - no exceptions. Maybe even permanently tag them with a GPS device that we can track to ensure they are captured immediately should they cross our borders again.

As for our wonderful US-born citizens who are morons - I wish there was something we could do to rid ourselves of them. Giving them 15 minutes of fame on the Jerry Springer show is such a penalty for being a moron!

The general public has, for some reason, adhered to the notion that the "Get tough on crime" fad that swept the nation starting back in the late 80's on thru today, are actually making a difference in our society when it comes to preventing or answering to crime! The leaders of ALL of the states in the union are now realizing that they are reaping the fruits of bad policy on criminal sentencing, they are broke due to the fact of their prisons are bursting at the seams, their city and county courts are backlogged with cases even though the staffing of these courts has tripled in the same amount of time, and every time they turn around, there is a new sentencing guideline calling for more prison time for even smaller crimes that are basically victimless! And the whole damn time the public thinks that every politician who is calling for getting even tougher than what the previous politician was on crime, is the greatest thing in the world! Some politicians have built their careers on "getting tough on crime" and at the same time they have placed an enormous hole to pour money into that gets bigger each passing day! The public wants anyone charged with a crime, no matter how small, thrown in prison for the maximum sentence possible, but at the same time make no provisions to pay for the increase of prisoners in the system, tax increases are out of the question! You have NEVER, EVER seen a politician say to his voters" I am going to clean up the crime around here by putting more people in prison for longer sentences for even less crime, but I will have to raise taxes to do it", or " I am going to raise your taxes to build more prisons to put the people in that are going to go there for the tough on crime laws that I am going to introduce and get passed"!
It has been proven OVER and OVER that tough on crime laws are a MISERABLE FAILURE!!!!! The 3 strikes laws in EVERY state that has passed them have done nothing more than fill up the prisons with people with some crimes as little as stealing a candy bar or stealing a bicycle! Prisons are where your BAD people need to be! Violent rapist and murders, robbery and mugging convicts! People who HURT people, not someone who is selling some weed or growing weed! Really any drug dealers as far as that goes! When you take one off the street there are 10 waiting to take their place, it cannot be stopped, ever! For those who have not done any research Arizona is not the ONLY state that uses private prisons to house those in our justice system. Most states do. It is not a Jan Brewer thing. Also have any of you done any research on how many criminals are released or given light sentences by our judges...only to rob or kill again. This is another issue that has enough blame to go around to all sorts of folks. Really no different than our broken immigration policies. Do we want to talk about those who are incarcerated incorrectly due to bad police work and an equally bad defense team. Nope......lots of issues from the top to the bottom.

Good point, Larry. They just might be able to handle the violent offenders within the state budget if our justice system would not cram our jails full of non-violent offenders. We have young people in jail for possession of pot, resulting in them having a grim future looking for a job, student loans and education grants with a criminal record. We put mediocre criminals and non-violents in jail where they in turn learn how to commit REAL crime (often violent). Not to mention the resources being flushed down the toilet and blood of our officers fighting this unwinnable war on drugs. 40 billion spent on the drug war plus blood of innocent people. Legalize and tax the stuff so we can free up jail space and policemen for the really bad boys!

I'm not certain of all the details, but it does sound like these two got out due to sloppy procedures at the prison, such as having a door, which should have been locked, propped open with a rock. I would also question how the 1st cousin/fiancee was able to stroll over to an area where she could toss in wirecutters. This kind of sloppiness has nothing to do with private vs public management, illegal vs legal citizens, or democrat vs republican; this was just bad operations. And as tempting as it would have been to waste this scum on the spot, we are a country of laws, not men (contrary to government appearances and actions for the last several years, so due process must be adhered to. If they are convicted, which is almost a certainty, then they can be summarily executed, if that is their sentence.

As for private vs public, since bottom line profit is watched do you think there is a possibility that upper management cut back on labor costs by not staffing all areas at times to save money?
