Well I sympathize with dragonwagon. I once when around collecting food for the needy, and all some people would give was a prayer written down on an index card. Lot of good that did......I've never looked at things quite the same since that event.

Fervent hope that all will be found to be survivors.. This is a real danger in a state so reliant upon small aircraft. I have lost a few friends up north in Alaska.. sea and air have both taken a long toll over the years.

I may be out of place here, but what do these comments have to do with the article? Wishing death on anyone? I read nothing about that in this article. God permitted the crash, not caused it. Imperfections in man-made machines, imperfections in man's behavior and interaction with natural caused this crash. Suggested homework - the Book of Job Chapter 1. After reading just that chapter - 5-10 minutes of reading, no one should ever make a ridiculous claim that God caused the crash. If you still doubt, compare that to other events of the Bible, Job is the clearest on this matter.

The ONLY major religion that regularly proclaims death for crimes AND adamantly, unforgivably, practices it is the RADICAL section of Islam.

Judiasm proclaims death by stoning to both partners and it was actually illegal for them to stone just one of the two. But true Judiasm has not been practiced since 70 AD, when Rome leveled Jerusalem and Herod's Temple.

Christianity as Christ and the Apostles practiced, stoned no one, nor condemned anyone. Any sect, or denomination that does is in serious error. The whole point is to draw men and women to Christ, get them to see that their behavior is wrong, get them to realize they need help, help them to do better, forgive them for their wrongs, and for those who come to live life as Christ did.

Government is the one who holds life and death in it's power for certain wrong acts. It is there as a deterrent to keep crime from escalating uncontrollably. Christians that understand the greater scheme of things support government doing so provided it is restricted to limits as they understand in the Old testament.

Sarah was not on that plane, those who died and were injured were. It is a horrific accident. The sad part is Stevens lost his first wife in the same way. For these families it is an unthinkable tragedy.

That's what got us in the first revolution. Too big a central government ruling from a distant land. Not looking out for the interests of the state. Cutting defense slowly. Letting China actually become the superior naval force in the pacific. Welcoming another terrorist attack because we will be ill prepared. Extending unemployment for well over a year. Creating unproductive government jobs that will just be a tax burden to the middle class. Spending like the currency will expire.

You have to be under the full-time employ of a civil engineer at least 4 years just to qualify to take the civil engineers exam. According to Joe, he would have had to have graduated college at the age of 21 (with a bachelor's in civil engineering) then worked 4 years then taken his exam and passed it all with enough time to keep posting on newsvine....(he might be an E.I.T. but he can't possibly be a civil engineer....)

Yes, a head on collision with a mountain usually kills everyone aboard, but if you have a chance it is normally toward the rear of the plane because those and all material in front of you actually slows down the impact of the rear. Knowing Sen Stevens died and that O'Keefe were good friends, I'd put a pretty good guess that O'Keefe and the pilot are dead also. There would be a chance that their boys survived at this point. Keep praying all. There are 4 injured survivors who still have a chance to make it.

1) How anyone possessing any thread of mental balance or basic goodness could find a dot to connect between this tragic plane crash and its casualties and ill-will for the former governor of the state in which the plane crashed escapes me, and no doubt all others of any balance and good will. I ask the msnbc/newsvine censors to ban such a warped person from future postings of this ilk. This sort of sickness and evil (sociopathy, actually) deserves no megaphone and no publication in a civil society.

2) Condolences to the families of the victims and to members of Congress on both sides of the aisle who have lost a former colleague and associates. The length of this man's tenure in Congress insures that he served back in the better and brighter Washington era of earlier, better times when civility and common sense were still part of the process. Tip O'Neill and Ronald Reagan disagreed on many policies but were always cordial, even friendly. Jack Kennedy relied on many across the aisle to steady his presidency, especially during the Bay of Pigs crisis. Citizens were proud of their government back in those times, with good reason. Now 6 of 10 Americans openly disapprove of their president and their Congress, and some particularly heinous citizen elements apparently even feel justified to publicly express death wishes - such as we saw on this thread - for leaders past or present with whom they "feel" they do not agree although many of those would likely be hard-pressed to "think" of and articulate a reason other than pure evil for their acting out. This trend is wrong and dangerous. The way to reform a broken system is to vote in an informed manner, not to rabble rouse. To turn America around we need a return to common sense, civility and integrity in Washington, most definitely, but we also need those elements in all of us citizens as well.

I came in here to offer my condolences to the HUMAN BEINGS who were lost in this tragic plane crash, as well as express sorry to the survivors and their families, and all I'm reading are mean in appropriate comments.

What has happened to us a HUMAN BEINGS?

The VICTIMS of this plane crash in Alaska had loved ones and friends who are hurting right now, and all we need to do is just TRY to show a little decency, and offer them comfort in their time of sorrow - instead of taking this opportunity to b*tch and moan about everything else under the sun.

We should ALL realize that there REALLY is a time and place for EVERYTHING, (including the nasty comments) but right now is not that time or place.

So, I will simply offer my condolences to the families of the deceased, and say that I hope that our fellow HUMAN BEINGS who survived this unfortunate ordeal will find hope and peace, as I cannot even BEGIN to imagine how it feels to lose a loved one in such a tragic event.

I doubt Stevens had any friends who are sad over his death... well, other than lobbyists and government contractors, a few of which were on the flight, I'm sure.

Alaska is the most spectacular state in the country. The flying, however, can often be treacherous and should never to be taken for granted, yet it is often the only practical method of transportation. For all of you Palin haters out there, I may not agree with her all of the time, but I admire her and all Alaskans for their fortitude. They somehow manage to overcome so many natural obstacles to live in a place that they love and where most of us could never make it. I learned this during my one visit there in the 1980's before the arrival of the cruisers. The experience left an impression on me that will last for my entire lifetime. My condolences to the Stevens family. This tragedy is not about politics, and some of you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Just one other thing, and Tyler is welcome to suspend me permanently for this. I learned long ago that the meanest, nastiest, and unhappiest people on the face of the earth are leftists. I was actually one of them at one time but have fully recovered today. They made me unhappy, and they make everyone unhappy. I was never a political fan of Ted Stevens. I don't agree with Palin all of the time and don't believe that she will ever be ready for prime time tv, but I've said this before about many individuals of both political parties who somehow made it to the Presidency during my lifetime. Alaskan skies are normally more dangerous for airplanes than most other skies, but it's also the best mode of transportation to many of Alaska's remote towns.

Why is it so dangerous to fly in Alaska? Fargo flies rain, shine, or 30 below zero visibility blizzard. Nothing stops them, and they have never had any trouble. I would think it would be far more dangerous to fly over the ocean with the chance of hitting a methane bubble which could stall your engines.

These planes basically serve as taxis and some times flight planning and calculations are an educated guess at best, but these smaller planes have a very small tolerance for excess weight, and the weight load on these small planes vary greatly from flight to flight. With 8? + pilot + luggage??? If all this proves to be true, this little plane was being pushed to it's limits. And if several of these packed heavy or were "heavy" themselves? Combine this with all of the other adverse flying conditions that Alaska provides, bad things are bound to happen.

STexan, this was a DHC-3 Otter not a Beaver. Its carrying capacity is 9-10 passengers, empty weight 4,431LBS with a max takeoff weight of 8,000LBS. I would suggest they were well within the limits of this plane.

We were stationed at Elmendorf AFB in 1972 when Senator Hale Boggs and Rep Nick Begich's plane went down southwest of Anchorage. A massive search, including one of our 'special at the time' planes, turned up nothing--it just disappeared. Back then, people in Alaska had these small planes as second cars; and most didn't carry locators. One of our guys got off course and landed in remote part of Canada, subsisted on creek water and berries for several weeks until an off-course airliner picked up his signal. It is an incredibly beautiful, rugged, and unforgiving place...and makes you realize how small and insignificant we humans are on this planet.

As someone who possesses a pilot's license and is a former Air Traffic Controller. Taking off in very low visibility always affords some amount of caution. To do so in a mountainous region is especially dangerous. Obviouly there were errors made here.

mark, many of these DHC-3's have been reengined and completely rebuilt by several companies (airtech canada being one of them). They are immensely popular, started their lives mainly as military craft and are still very much in use.

As an aircraft mechanic I can tell you from experience..most small aircraft that are flying today where built more than 30 years ago, and a large percentage are in the 50 year old range..for an aircraft to continue being certified as "airworthy" it must go thru periodic inspections and service, determined by hours of operation, or else it will be "grounded"..an aircraft of that vintage likely has very few, if any, of its original parts..I would imagine even the seat cusions have been replaced a few times..the most likely scenarios for a small aircraft crash in an area like this one would be pilot error, icing conditions(ice building up on the exterior), or a bird strike...its almost never the fault of the machinery...

That's the other reason I'm recommending you guys refrain from that kind of rhetoric.

You know, while I agree with you that it is inappropriate and a violation of COH, I'm not sure I want Tyler handling it. When I was new, I saw his posts quite often, and I always had to mark them as inflammatory. It was some time later I realized he was a moderator. I have never seen a moderator that likes to gloat so much and say such inappropriate things. As for the large amount of inappropriate comments to this story and also yesterday to the story about Cheney, the best course of action is simply to ignore them. For a large part people are simply trying to bait others. Don't worry, if there are no comments on their remarks, they'll soon get bored and go play with their Xbox360 which will entertain them until they thankfully go back to elementary school soon.

Tylers job is to moderate not censor. The goal is to keep the vine growing and on track. While we may find some comments distasteful, this is an open forum. Check out the judeo-christian principles that our Founders used in the creation of this nation. Unless liberal revisionists have completed erased our nation's history, those principles can still be found in historic writings by the Founders and are still practiced by a majority of Americans today who silently go about their business according to those principles. Actually, as I understand it the Founding Father purposely stayed away from the term Christian, Jesus, or other specific religious doctrine. So to be more accurate, we are a nation founded on Christian-Judea belief ethics, and may be predominantly Christian whatever that means today, but we are not technically a Christian Nation.

How sad that the minute Sarah came into the National spotlight, that our MSM unmercifully attacked her and boy has it not caught on to most of our country. It's amazing how intimidated liberal women are by Palin. She is a vibrant, attractive, smart, athletic woman. Not a cold, unattractive, frigid, Dem female. She is what every woman on here dogging her, wishes they could be. She is down to earth and not your prototypical hypocrite.

Here's my honest opinion of Sarah Palin.

I feel like I have a number of honest disagreements with her and those who support her, but that those who support her will automatically hate me if I disagree in a public forum. This annoys me, and some of that (okay, a lot) gets transferred to Palin herself and to her most outspoken supporters. I don't hate her, or them. But I find her, them, and her ideology extremely disagreeable and annoying.

Sarah Palin being dumber than a box of rocks, despite all her "reg'lar folks" charm does not scare me one whit. It's the people even dumber than she is who get to vote that scare me. And, if she really was more popular than "any democrat," why isn't she the sitting VP?

I can tell who you listen to, that dumb ass Bill Maher. You know who's twice as dumb, Joe Biden. How may gaffes has he made and the press ignores. Dan Quayle made one, but its the only one you ever hear about. It amazes me how double standard the liberal press is.

Palin is more qualified to be president than Obama. She has more experience. So how is she dumb?????

Firstly, what was her approval rating by the time she quit? (hint: not so good) Besides, to paraphrase PT Barnum, there's a sucker born every minute. And really, politics is full of clever (not intelligent) people; being able to get elected is a matter of photogenicity (new word?). Finally, folks who liked her were the same ones who kept Stevens (Senator Pork to many) around for so long. Can't think of many good things Mrs Palin accomplished during her time as governor, though if she hadn't quit to become a political reality star who knows...she had some good notions, just no solid and functional plan to make them happen. Oh and regarding the "bridge to nowhere", an engineering company with which I am very familiar is still working on plans for that. Not cancelled at all. Stevens supported but didn't sponsor it.

Actually I have a funny story for you. I always heard the saying "spare the rod spoil the child" and thought that it was advice to live by instead of a warning against making a spoiled child. I know lots of people who were spoiled as children and have turned into responsible, contributing members of society because they are mimicking their parents' generosity. I was a bit surprised, considering my own parents (who I assume are liberal.....we don't talk about those things in the midwest) raised me more like you would probably approve of. Still, I am envious of the values the other group has instilled in them.......they understand kindness and generosity, and I think they are better for it.

If you spare discipline you spoil the child, like a spoiled piece of fruit. Keep attending classes in the University and allow the liberal instructors to wash your brain. It seems to be working.

U of C student, I am not advocating cruel and harsh treatment of children to encourage responsibility, and also do not agree that "spoiling" children helps them to become generous and well-behaved adults. I do not think, "generosity" and "over-indulging" are similar term. Ask Warren Buffets kids, one of the wealthiest men in the world, wanted his kids to make it on their own.

George Bush is not "my President" and I don't agree with many of the things he did. I think it is wrong to assume anyone who is conservative, is a George Bush lover. And your boy Barry with his democratic congress will spend more than any other president when he is finished. And we will still be in a recession. You do know what ended the great depression, right? Not the New Deal, not the endless amount of goverment spending, but WWII. I understand starting a world war is not a constructive answer, but at least I know that endless government spending is the wrong answer.

Obama did Indeed have a democratic cabinet, but he spent those Trillions of dollars to clean up the MESS BUSH MADE. Most of those initial billions/trillions were handed out by BUSH to try and keep the thieving bankers from killing this country with thier housing debacle.

The way I see it, all technology you use came from the Ivy tower one way or another. Every second you likely use or benefit from a tool or a science originally from the elitist intelligentsia. Perhaps universities are a poor approximation of the real world. Yet paradoxically, it is the universities and tech companies that create it.

As a side note, my college days were very conservative. Milton Friedman was a large part of my curriculum.

So you graduated with a degree in technology, my area of study was history. The mandatory curriculum is skewed liberally. Their are no politics in science. Don't try to hide the fact that you are pressing an agenda through foggy philosophical ramblings.

When I attended school I questioned what I was being taught, after all, our universities are supposed to enlighten its students by enhancing ones ability to produce their own ideas rather than follow others, are they not? I recall one class in particular, it was an exiting class everyone in the history dept had to take with the Dean. In a roundtable discussion the question was asked "why did Truman drop the bomb?" my answer was to show the Soviet Union and the rest of the World that we could and would in addition to saving US servicemembers lives. According to that particular professor I was wrong. Was it wrong, perhaps, depending upon who you ask but I have seen that my thoughts on the issue have been accepted as others have come to that conclusion as well. My point is that Universities have in the past and to this day let their professors teach students their own political views, rather than letting the person decide how they feel when addressing the issue of politics. It is very easy to hold one paticular party in a certain light while pointing out the others shortcomings, do you not agree?

You know, Dustin, I might have debated you on your point of view, as much to hear the basis for your thinking as for other reason. Reasoned debate is, in my opinion, the most important thing a university can teach, once it gets beyond the fudamentals. They need to teach people to think, not to follow authority blindly, just to bolster some man's feelings of self-importance. I remain an Independent for that very reason: to vote issues rather than party lines. Off-topic somewhat, but I thank you for the thought.

That seems like an odd topic for a college discussion. We stayed away from anything recent. I do remember one lively debate about the politics of the Assyrian empire, though. Anything else of a political nature was discussed on a theory level. As far as current events......well sometimes that decision is made for you. I remember Sarah Palin campaigning against the use of federal funds to study fruit flies. This shows her lack of understanding of any topic in biology. The word 'genetics' would not exist without fruit flies (if you don't believe me, just google Thomas Hunt Morgan). I still can't believe she said that.

Chicago, I struggle to find the answers to the Sarah Palin riddle, just like I find myself confused by certain politicians on both sides of the isle. To me it seems as if they feel the "World is their stage" and become nothing but charicatures of themselves. Whether someone has conservative views or liberal, views neither should be dismissed. Unfortunately politicians an the like, carry the banter at a fevered pitch which pollutes their solutions to our problems. The people are the ones who loose when the result of politics becomes nothing more than a finger pointing game.

is this what they are teaching nowadays?...most inventions are made in livingrooms, basements, and garages....you really think the Wright brothers, Henry Ford, or Bill Gates where from "the elitist intelligentsia"? they where farmers and entrepreneurs, whom YOU would today consider "evil capitalists"....you believe in "the use of federal funds to study fruit flies."?..if that study is so important to biology you would think it would be done with PRIVATE funding..you wanna save jobs for police and firefighters? cut off the federal funding for studies of cow f@rts!! and get yourself some privately funded gas ballons....
