Heavy rains and barren hiilsides are a recipe for disaster. I am sorry to say but those that were swept away have little chance of ever bieng found. It is good that the Chinese military is mobilized to help. Here's to hoping that they can demolish that mud dam in a manner that will release the water behind it in a controlled way and not in a large torrent.
Once again we see how insignificant were are against nature. Best wishes to those affected.
Well with this happening all over China maybe they have found out that enviormental reports are a necessity when you build. At the expense of a few more lives.
fgh don't worry. I'm sure when the US runs out of space they will just invade another land, kill the people, and then say that it belonged to them from the beginning. You're safe.
Now that the story is old news, lets go shopping at walmart and stimulate the chinese economy so they can help the victims of this terrible event.Top ramen noodles anyone?
Really tragic, but it does help with population control. Even though this is a sad disaster that could've been prevented, it happened and there's nothing more one can do about it but learn from their mistakes, and I'm sure they won't.
I just went to the local shoe store. I couldn't find one single pair of shoes not manufactured in the People's Republic of China. Not one! Where am I supposed to buy my shoes? China, you deal with this situation and leave the rest of us alone!
xgoodguy: Gates and Buffett are only committed to the politically correct causes of the world, such as pissing away billions on AIDS in Africa. Talk about lost causes. Neither of them have a single clue as to where to contribute their dollars most effectively. They only contribute to where their "advisers" tell them to contribute. Personally, they could care less. As you already know, the only thing that they ever cared about was the almighty dollar in their own pockets.
fgh don't worry. I'm sure when the US runs out of space they will just invade another land, kill the people, and then say that it belonged to them from the beginning. You're safe.
Ironic that it hasn't occurred to you that you have just described the Chinese colonialism policy which explains why the Tibetans are now only 30% of the population in this area.
The criminally irresponsible environmental policies of the Chinese government in so many areas (mining, dam-building, pollution, landuse (deforestation), health and safety non-regulation of foods and manufacturing, etc.) is solely responsible for this man-made disaster. Perhaps when the very same failure occurs at one of their more significant dams (ie. 3Gorges) and entire cities are destroyed perhaps they will begin to realize their folly.
Forestation is not going to help. When an entire mountian decides to slide, well...
I live in Colorado and have seen huge flash floods. The Big Thompson flood in '77 killed 168. Five more in Fort Collins (my town) in '97. Most of it has to do with were people live. Poor people live in the flood prone areas. In '97 the five victims lived in a trailer park. All women, the last victim found a week later a mile downstream. Very sad.
Reforestation will certainly help reduce mudslides. The deep roots help anchor the soil and the organic matter on the forest floor help absorb the rainfall more evenly. Not to mention the smaller roots from the plants in the understory and the way rain hits the ground gently when it's filtered through multiple levels of vegetation instead of pounding the ground directly and breaking up the soil. Mudslides, and floods too, will happen now and then regardless of course. But forests and all kinds of vegetation help a lot.
BTW the Big Thompson flood did not include a mudslide unless I'm mistaken and was caused by a huge downpour in a steep rocky area. So.. flash flood.. it's a different case entirely.
You are very easily amazed and pretty amazed with yourself too.
People haven't even discussed the possible causes, of a type of disaster we have seen in many parts of the world this summer, in countries from Pakistan to those of Eastern Europe.
Yet all you can see is that people are not attacking the "Commie Fascist Han Chinaman", as you term them. Most are more concerned with the scope of the tragedy.
Incidentally, Gansu Province in northern central China, comprises parts of at least 3 deserts, including the Gobi. It has always been an arid, poor region and if its natural resources have been depleted, it is more likely that thousands of years of human exploitation, by subsistence level farmers and herdsmen are responsible, not 2 generations of communist rule.
But, hey, attention to facts might dull your shrill-toned attacks. So carry on. Keep babbling about the "sheepies" , the "Commie Fascist Han Chinaman" and any other imaginary beings besetting your world.
Land conservation and drainage infrastructure takes a back set to the breakneck development that has been running wild for the last 20 years in China. Same for environmental and pollution issues.
I worked in China on a dam project where the environmental studies were forced on them by the Japanese (as price for donating equipment). The management were reluctant to do the studies needed to prevent the contamination of a reservoir that had been receiving mill waste for decades. The attitude was that it ws not in their jurisdiction. Some visual mitigation was undertaken to prevent the loss of view to a scenic area, but the underlying management problems were never addressed.
The united states suffered a number of man made disasters that were tied directly to overuse of land and a lack of long term planning. The dust bowl years were a direct result of overuse of land. Our response was to plant millions of trees as windbreaks. Today in the midwest there is a strong drive towards wetlands restoration to help deal with flooding. I'm not very knowledgeable about northwest China's topography or original ecology but doing something like that might be a step in the right direction to avoid or at least mitigate future disasters. I sincerely hope that the families affected cam be reunited and the dead recovered.
I am very sorry for the families of those Chinese who were killed. When land slides down a mountain, nobody in its path has much chance of survival. No man-made structure can stand against the power of a landslide.
better yet, is that what they call caring? china is the biggest violator of human rights and could give a crap less aboout the US. they breed like hamsters, have a hive mentality and the ones in the US have stores in NY that have nothing but chinese writing(yep no english) they are innate segregationists without equal and quite frankly we have far more in the US to worry about than a landslide. facts are facts.
Read Garrett Hardin's 1968 article (Science) "Nobody dies of overpopulation." People died because others force them into places of risk. Or set up the causes of disasters.
What everyone in this forum is failing to recognize is that these people are not Chinese. They are Tibetan and living under the yoke of Chinese oppression. It's interesting to see the media saying how happy people are with the government when their true political and spiritual leader is exiled to a different country.
Pit Boss, ...x.x..., and Donald-2161975, are three useless humanoids, not going to say human beings, because that you are not. Just crawl back into your slime filled hole under some bridge and enjoy your existence.
Floods and mudslides in China. Fires in Russia. Floods in a muslim country and help, help, help, help. We need Euro's or $ (USD) aid. Help us, we take the aid to fight the Taliban and spend it to fight India instead. Help us we can't do this ourselves. Our muslim brothers and sisters need the money to fight the evil western culture. Let us immigrate and we will open another tobacco or alcohol store.
For your information Russia did not ask for $ aid or any other aid from the US. European countries are the ones helping and not with money but helicopters. Even though I agree with you on tobacco and alcohol stores, but the people that are suffering and dying are not any worse than you and I are. We haven't done anything to deserve the blessings we are getting.
Mother nature is just getting even with us,it's just going to get worse and it's just to late to do anything about it.
We have been messing with mother nature and now is the other way around.Governments have been talking about solutions and not doing anything about it,now we will pay the ultimate price.

LOL! If you guys weren't actually serious, this would be hillarious. Do you not understand that there were ice ages and melting periods, floods, earthquakes, etc. before you were born?
If we were talking about the mudslide last week in Sichuan, then YES, deforestation is the major cause. But is this case in Gansu province, it's hard to blame it on deforestation; that'd be like blaming deforestation if there were a flash flood in southern Nevada or Arizona. It's a desert-like area, folks. The uncharacteristic heavy rains surely played a larger factor than simply few trees which there were few of in the first place.
Active participation in all countries to prevent petroleum pollution could reverse this trend in all areas of the world. Legislation to prevent overindulgence of petroleum and petroleum use in products needs to be created.
The cure no one wants to hear unless they have some on them, (MUD).
That's because China is one of the richest countries in the world and it would make them look bad to have to ask for help. Mao (Chinese dictator) had engineered what he called the "great leap forward" that resulted in millions of deaths brought on largely by mismanaging farms and the food that was generated. No calls for aid then either.

The Bible tells us that God allows the SUn to scrotch man & they curse his name instead of repenting...UR choice, but things will only get way way worse in ur lifetime. 2000 tornadoes per yr in USA...well U haven't seen nothin yet!!!
I don't think "God" has anything to do with it. Our planet Earth is a living entity. We humans - with our modern polluting way of life - are the equivalent of cancer on the body of Mother Nature, and she is not liking what we are doing to her. She is trying to rid herself of us in order to survive. If humans had never developed beyond the way of life of our Native American ancestors - taking only from the planet that which is necessary for our survival - then humankind would have been allowed to exist on Earth for a much longer period of time. But modernization and the industrial revolution are the equivalent of raping Mother Earth, and she's not going to stand for it much longer. It's very possible that in 2012 the entire planet will drastically change, and humans will be wiped from the face of the Earth. The events you describe are all signs of that oncoming change. If it doesn't happen in one huge swipe, we will poison and starve ourselves to death due to misuse of resouces and overpopulation. Large amounts of money will not save anyone, nor will praying.
I am not denying the existance of a higher power, because I believe in one, too. I'm just looking at "the big picture" in a different way, a more realistic way. Hang on, the next few years could be a wild ride.
This is just Darwinism playing out? Humans are, in part, too intelligent to survive? Only if we were knuckle-draggers would we be allowed to live? Tell that one to the dinosaurs!
dude get a life. islam is more recent than many other religions of the world. it cannot be 'superior' to any other religion - all religions were espoused by men as a means of attaining god, and none of them is better/worse than any other.
it is people like you that are inferior - that fanatically believe that only what they read in ONE book is the ultimate truth. there is one ultimate truth for each and every one of us on the planet. it is this shortsightedness - in religion, by those who teach the likes of you and those that believe what these idiot teach you (like you); in politics, by those who promise the moon (like Ob and all the others), make decisions with only their selfish end in mind (Dick Cheney, anyone...??) and do nothing, and those that believe everything that these politicians say (a lot of us) -
this shortsightedness is going to be our downfall. natural cycles have happenned before and will continue later too - but denuding entire mountains is going to cause several problems:
1. reduced protection against floods - resulting in mudslides etc
2. reduced water retention in soil
3. reduced cloud-making - eventually turning lush green areas into deserts
etc etc
good luck with your limited view of the world! just remember that there are no date trees and rivers of milk, or boys or hoors serving you ambrosia, in some imagined afterlife - they are all supposed to be here on this earth - and we would have all that, if we take some care of the planet and of other people. Ranting about religion and words written by other men who wrote things down based on their own limited knowledge of the universe serves no one any good.
LOL the part about the agnostic made me laugh specially the part about the empirical proof. I consider myself agnostic. It is not so much that I think that nothing came before my very sweet ass, I just dont know if anything did, I cannot prove anything one way or another. And the truth is that I dont care. I dont care what or if other people believe. I dont really care if there is a god or not. But since I cannot prove that it/she/he does not exist I allow for the possibility that it/she/he could.
Really do you think that this is for real NOT, 2012 is just a hype to make us panic the government is just bored and have to come up with some stupid idea that this is it. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ thats all it, your in a 1 triilion in debt they have to pay it some how making us panic so we have to buy things to portect ourself, we are being brainwashed into believing this. WE are the ones who are destorying this planet, when i'm dead this planet will still be here.
Unless an inter-galactic black hole comes streaking through the Solar System, thereby throwing all the planets' orbits into chaos, the Earth will still be here in 3 billion years.
We humans however, may end up making this planet mostly unihabitable for at least several millenia if we keep this $h!t up for much longer. In the long run Mother Earth will recover from our assault and battery upon her, but we won't.
Oama is not fault. I make no sense to me. The weaher cause a lot of rain of bad storm. China people should to help more and have wake up to work with them.

Good. 1,400. less yellow rats on this earth to work for pennies making cheap, poisnous plastic crap to kill our country with. Maybe those arrogant short little slanted eyed chineese asswipes didnt invade and destroy Tibet this would not be an issue.
Eddie is correct. This planet and it's moon are consistantly moving out into space. This has been going on since the "Big Bang"....and nothing propelled remains static in a vacuum. This transaction has taken billions of years, and barring any external forces, will continue on their current path.
This planet is constantly in a state of flux, and will go through internal gyrations regardless of the scattering of matter (us) across it's crust. There are many global occurances that are and forever will be out of our control. HOWEVER, that wee veneer of crust, and the thin film of atmo is OUR domain, and what occurs in that domain is our responsibility.
A good example is the black dust storms that blanketed the Midwest and eventually the East coast. The land was so torn up from irresponsible farming practices that sample of the top soil from these states were found as far away as Great Britain, thus creating the area we now refer to as the dust bowl. We don't see to learn from our mistakes very well at all. (tip of the hat and wag of the finger to BP.....thanks a$$holes)
Yup, Billy...2012 seems more like a self fulfulling prophecy.....we keep going like this, we might not make it that far.
Thousands of years???? Are you joking?
Well with this happening all over China maybe they have found out that enviormental reports are a necessity when you build. At the expense of a few more lives.
I feel sorry for those affected in China but, please don't tell me that we (the U.S.) are going to send them $billions in aid? We are frigging broke!!
Please do not tell any of us that we are going to send $$$$$$$$$. And please do not tell them that we have plenty of space.
fgh don't worry.
Has far as the $$$$$$$$$ goes, I beleive China has enough to help themselves. I am not completely against foreign aid for more destitute countries.
Mother nature, meet China.
Really tragic, but it does help with population control. Even though this is a sad disaster that could've been prevented, it happened and there's nothing more one can do about it but learn from their mistakes, and I'm sure they won't.

dude get a life. islam is more recent than many other religions of the world. it cannot be 'superior' to any other religion - all religions were espoused by men as a means of attaining god, and none of them is better/worse than any other.
it is people like you that are inferior - that fanatically believe that only what they read in ONE book is the ultimate truth. there is one ultimate truth for each and every one of us on the planet. it is this shortsightedness - in religion, by those who teach the likes of you and those that believe what these idiot teach you (like you); in politics, by those who promise the moon (like Ob and all the others), make decisions with only their selfish end in mind (Dick Cheney, anyone...??) and do nothing, and those that believe everything that these politicians say (a lot of us) -
this shortsightedness is going to be our downfall. natural cycles have happenned before and will continue later too - but denuding entire mountains is going to cause several problems:
1. reduced protection against floods - resulting in mudslides etc
2. reduced water retention in soil
3. reduced cloud-making - eventually turning lush green areas into deserts
etc etc
good luck with your limited view of the world! just remember that there are no date trees and rivers of milk, or boys or hoors serving you ambrosia, in some imagined afterlife - they are all supposed to be here on this earth - and we would have all that, if we take some care of the planet and of other people.
Absoutely heartbreaking.
It wont matter come 2012!
im still waiting for y2k lol doomsday idiots
if the end is in 2012 why are we still here! i'll talk to you on December, 22 2012 OK!
Read the book "5/5/2000", people have been predicting the end of time, since the beginning of it. "2012" is emblematic of the Jim Jones mentality.
You make no sense to me either.........
I agree with Nancy. Read what she posted again, Saferider. Pragmatically spot on!

Eddie is totally correct! Repent and get right with the Lord
Sad.
..X.X...Wow! Did someone take a crap in your cereal this morning?
it must of been the plastic crap in x's crack pipe to say what he did.
What a horrible tragedy...I will pray for you..
Mother nature is not vindictive or hateful. Those are human emotions, as evidenced here.
