Well with this happening all over China maybe they have found out that enviormental reports are a necessity when you build. At the expense of a few more lives.

I feel sorry for those affected in China but, please don't tell me that we (the U.S.) are going to send them $billions in aid? We are frigging broke!!

Has far as the $$$$$$$$$ goes, I beleive China has enough to help themselves. I am not completely against foreign aid for more destitute countries.

Really tragic, but it does help with population control. Even though this is a sad disaster that could've been prevented, it happened and there's nothing more one can do about it but learn from their mistakes, and I'm sure they won't.

Ironic that it hasn't occurred to you that you have just described the Chinese colonialism policy which explains why the Tibetans are now only 30% of the population in this area.

The criminally irresponsible environmental policies of the Chinese government in so many areas (mining, dam-building, pollution, landuse (deforestation), health and safety non-regulation of foods and manufacturing, etc.) is solely responsible for this man-made disaster. Perhaps when the very same failure occurs at one of their more significant dams (ie. 3Gorges) and entire cities are destroyed perhaps they will begin to realize their folly.

Reforestation will certainly help reduce mudslides. The deep roots help anchor the soil and the organic matter on the forest floor help absorb the rainfall more evenly. Not to mention the smaller roots from the plants in the understory and the way rain hits the ground gently when it's filtered through multiple levels of vegetation instead of pounding the ground directly and breaking up the soil. Mudslides, and floods too, will happen now and then regardless of course. But forests and all kinds of vegetation help a lot.

BTW the Big Thompson flood did not include a mudslide unless I'm mistaken and was caused by a huge downpour in a steep rocky area. So.. flash flood.. it's a different case entirely.

Incidentally, Gansu Province in northern central China, comprises parts of at least 3 deserts, including the Gobi. It has always been an arid, poor region and if its natural resources have been depleted, it is more likely that thousands of years of human exploitation, by subsistence level farmers and herdsmen are responsible, not 2 generations of communist rule.

I worked in China on a dam project where the environmental studies were forced on them by the Japanese (as price for donating equipment). The management were reluctant to do the studies needed to prevent the contamination of a reservoir that had been receiving mill waste for decades. The attitude was that it ws not in their jurisdiction. Some visual mitigation was undertaken to prevent the loss of view to a scenic area, but the underlying management problems were never addressed.

The united states suffered a number of man made disasters that were tied directly to overuse of land and a lack of long term planning. The dust bowl years were a direct result of overuse of land. Our response was to plant millions of trees as windbreaks. Today in the midwest there is a strong drive towards wetlands restoration to help deal with flooding. I'm not very knowledgeable about northwest China's topography or original ecology but doing something like that might be a step in the right direction to avoid or at least mitigate future disasters. I sincerely hope that the families affected cam be reunited and the dead recovered.

ANd as a consequence WE WILL HAVE MORE EARTH QUAKES & VOLCANIC ACTIVITY. Oceans of water are on the Earths Plates & as the solar system expand the plates and tides are compensating. And the Sun is being tweeked as it's solar system of planets recede away from it we get more SOLAR FLARES...

I don't think "God" has anything to do with it. Our planet Earth is a living entity. We humans - with our modern polluting way of life - are the equivalent of cancer on the body of Mother Nature, and she is not liking what we are doing to her. She is trying to rid herself of us in order to survive. If humans had never developed beyond the way of life of our Native American ancestors - taking only from the planet that which is necessary for our survival - then humankind would have been allowed to exist on Earth for a much longer period of time. But modernization and the industrial revolution are the equivalent of raping Mother Earth, and she's not going to stand for it much longer. It's very possible that in 2012 the entire planet will drastically change, and humans will be wiped from the face of the Earth. The events you describe are all signs of that oncoming change. If it doesn't happen in one huge swipe, we will poison and starve ourselves to death due to misuse of resouces and overpopulation. Large amounts of money will not save anyone, nor will praying.

I am not denying the existance of a higher power, because I believe in one, too. I'm just looking at "the big picture" in a different way, a more realistic way. Hang on, the next few years could be a wild ride.

Unless an inter-galactic black hole comes streaking through the Solar System, thereby throwing all the planets' orbits into chaos, the Earth will still be here in 3 billion years.

We humans however, may end up making this planet mostly unihabitable for at least several millenia if we keep this $h!t up for much longer. In the long run Mother Earth will recover from our assault and battery upon her, but we won't.
