Was he practicing for something or just bonding with his son by teaching him useful skills?
Does it matter? He is a felon making high power explosives.
Does it matter that he was an Ex-Felon ( or ex-criminal, if you prefer). The point was is that he made dangerous things & endangered his son. If you had done so, then your situation would've been about the same as his. Does it matter? Yes it does. He's certainly no angel, but then again none of us really are as well.
Just be glad his son didn't have a play date with your son and teach him some skills.

Did the same thing when I was a kid. They were not built to hurt or destroy anyone or anything. It was just fun to go out in the woods and blow up the devices. We were always safe. Kind of like Obama's buddy Bill Ayers. Except his bombs killed poeple.

Our detonations were pretty big. What is really funny, I lived in New York City at the time. 1950s-60s. We blew them up in a local park. Did lose my eye brows once.
like I said, pretty lucky. Don't get me wrong, I did some crazy stuff too, but these sound pretty big, and the guy is nuts...
Dave - I remember filling beach balls with an Oxygen/acetylene mixture from my uncles welding tanks. We would take them to beach parties and play volleyball across a bonfire. When they fell in, the concussion would knock you over. As much fun as that was, I would never show my own kids how to do it.
I can't imagine what kind of warped parent would build bombs with a 6 year old. His mother needs sole custody of the kid before it is too late.

It has nothing to do with your warped sense of politics and false history. Teaching kids to build things that can kill them as well as others is WRONG by any sane and rational persons standards.

Jeez - can't even blow up stuff anymore. I did this as a kid - still got all 20. I taught my kids the same skills, as I believe an armed and dangerous population is what is needed to keep the corporate government in check. Without knowing more it is had to comment. Did he make threats to blow people up?, or did he only do this around the 4th of July every year. When I was 12 I was using my chemical set to make small fire works and when I was 18 bigger BOOMS! Isn't this part of growing up as long as there is no malice or ill intent.
You obviously didn't read the whole article. He is a felon convicted of many things including assault. He was also recently arrested for making threats against his wife (in front of his son). These were not the little things we all built as kids, these were pipe bombs, etc . . . that could be felt by the child from some distance away.
I wonder why this guy was even walking the streets with his history. Besides how did the parole checks miss all of his guns???

I think you have it backwards there. The left-wing loves America, we just feel that our best days are ahead of us, not in the past (thus the term progressive vs/ conservative).

Normally the idea of a little father-son project makes me feel all warm and squishy. This time--not so much.
This 6 year old sounds pretty darn prolific to me. Very describtive. And just how easy is it to get a 6 year to remember a recipe? Mix 2 or 3 ingredients to volumes for something very simple provided there is no cooking involved. Get a milk carton and use X amount. If it is a pipe bomb it would be much more intricate. Don't forget the particles. Then there is detonatation. A simple gas in a jug, or a pipe bomb? A 6 yr. old? The cops are allowed to lie in building a case. This sounds like all hearsay. I rembered Jane and Sally when I was 6. Don't forget what can be done with the the " common chemicals " under your kitchen sink or in your garage. Am I bad because I taught my daughter when she was 10 to 12 how to defend herself herself at home if she ever had to. Because their is some pretty lethal stuff in the house. What's next? If the cops want to arrest us for whats "legally bought at the local store; I have weapons of detruction? As far as being heard saying he's going to kill his wife, hell, I've heard 75% of the male say that.
A lot of survival skills that most people will never know about was passed down to me from my father.
But, building a basic Molotov cocktail and a pipe bomb is crap you can learn from any library or watching movies.
Sure the kid shouldn't know this stuff at six years old, but sooner or later if that is what he was interested in, he would have figured it out on his own.

It's interesting to read the different points of view regarding this educational primer on fireworks or bomb making, yet on down the road some lucky kid will turn in to a military man; who will complain then!

I don't see the big deal. When I was a kid, we lived in the Philippines for three years. I was taught by other kids how to make things go boom with gunpowder ...no one died. There was actually more danger from finding old WWII unexploded grenades, mortar shells and occasionally a bomb weighing hundreds of pounds. We lived there in the 60's. In the 90's they found boobie traps under the very house where we used to live. The house was elevated off the ground, and I used to walk under there all the time...crap I could've been blown-up...LOL.

You can get all of the informaiton you want on just about anything including explosives and how to make them on the internet. You can get the ingredients and ratio's from several sources if you google it. The government has to do something every once in awhile just so the public thinks they are getting their moneys worth. All of the agencies involved in this mans arrest make me think of Ruby Ridge and how Randy Weaver was set up.
In the early sixties, when I was around twelve, my similarly aged neighbors and I made all sorts of small bombs- chemical shake-bottles, gunpowder bombs, home made black powder, fertilizer and sugar smoke bombs, and we had access to hammerheads and cherry bombs, M-80's, big aerial bombs, etc, every July 4th. There were injuries here and there, but gee whiz, ATF and Homeland security would have us under a prison for the same crap today. We also shot each other with BB guns and pellet guns- made some nasty welts...did you ever get set on fire with a can of ether car-starter used as a flame thrower? Ever been sprayed with fire from a can of Right Guard? Ever made drip-zips with a burning bleach bottle?

yes until this "kid" makes a device and someone gets hurt, then all of you that don't see the "big deal " are going to turn right around and ask what kind of parent would do this...hypocrites.
It is bad enough when teenagers do stupid and dangerous things with chemical mixtures. Teenagers are so arrogant, and so lacking in wisdom and long-term perspective, they think they are invincible. However, THIS guy is a FELON . . . . teaching a 6 YEAR OLD, for Christ's sake ! . . . . A 6 YEAR OLD ! Inevitably, the morons who think they are so clever and invincible almost always wind up hurting OTHER people . . . . even if they do not hurt themselves. And NO, I am NOT an anti-gun nut. I believe very strongly in the Second Amendment and the right of decent, honest and SANE citizens to own personal FIREARMS for self-defense. However, this idiot felon really is guilty of child abuse.

I'm 63 I never learn how to build a bomb as a kid growning up in rural central Oregon as a farm hand kid.
Make no sense to me to show my boys what the Army trained me to do.
It's obviously not a normal father/son relationship if a 6 year old child had to confide in another adult that he feared his father would follow through on his threat to kill his mother. Putting everything else aside, most kids don't have to live with those kinds of thoughts.
