Why would anyone want to live in Chicago? That city just spends too much money defending their assinine laws.

@JJ-663268: You make a fine argument, except that you're wrong. In every single case (Texas, Oregon, etc.) where gun ownership and carry laws have been relaxed, the rates of gun-related crime have fallen, sometimes as much as 30%. Criminals are never going to obey the gun laws, so none of these restrictions apply to them. Your logic is flawed. A law against raping, stealing, and murdering does not impact the rights of lawful citizens where as strict gun restrictions do. The irony in gun bans goes further in that it can even impede lawful citizens from protecting themselves against the already unlawful.
If you really want to live without any gun laws move to Somalia or Afganistan and then tell me that you'll be much safer there.

Gun laws have less to do with violence than more important social and political issues.
"Damn the Supreme Court! I don't care WHAT the law says.... I do as I damn well please"
Typical Chicago politician. Absolutely the best that money can buy, in a city where an honest politician is one who stays bought. No wonder the blues thrives there.
This is the same guy who, after being reprimanded and told in no uncertain terms by the FAA and federal government that they couldn't tear up the small-airplane airport in Chicago, had his bulldozer teams come in at night and strip up the runways and buildings.
He thinks he's King of Chicago. The rules aren't for him, it would seem.
I guess Chicago won't be a City I'll be visiting for pleasure. Business only and very limited at that. I live a few hours away in a different State and have liked to go to the City to see the sights and tour, but no more. Work on the criminals Mr. Mayor, not the law abiding citizens.
Now lets not knock Chicago as a city Mark. I happen to live in the Gold Coast and its a beautiful area. Chicago has a great amount of culture to offer along with diversification. Knowing that Mark W will not be visiting Chicago makes a trip there far more attractive. I hope all people who think the gun-lovers are crazy and who support rational gun policies will go out of their way to visit the great city of the midwest.
Heh jj please you anti gun guys just got your ass handed to you by the highest court in our land again. The people of this great nation love the 2nd amendment the mass majority will always win 8)
Thanks Big Al for thinking I was anti gun. I am when it comes to the city of Chicago. The rest of this great state allows you to carry guns. I keep mine gun at my brothers house in the suburbs where they should be, away from kids and away from families. Guns should be used for nothing else than target practice and the occasional dear.
hell with that, its MY house, I will lock up what I want and leave unlocked what I want, I will keep as many loaded guns as I want in MY house, I owne my house, and if I lived in chicago, I would sue them on those issues, no one has done it before on gun issues, but what goes on in my bedroom or my house is noone elses business, and that HAS been decided in the supreme court before, just not on fire arms, Drugs are illegal, the constitution does not give me the right to bear cocain, I know that, but it does give me the right to bear arms,
Please don't talk about the constitution, you can't read so who cares what you have heard. I agree though, keep as many loaded guns in YOUR home as you want, and on his way out with them, I hope the crook who has come to take them , will thank you with a nice clean shot between the eyes, because if you are not part of the solution , you are the problem.
You have a serious mental defect if you think that guns are to protect someone from a robber in their own house and even more impaired if you think most people would let a robber get to their gun. This particular article was passed so that citizens could protect themselves from rogue militias...not unlike our police force of today. Help us all if idiots like you forget North vs. South during the Civil War can't soon be Democrat vs. Republican in our time.
Please read my post of 8.5 if you havent already. YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM....Hope you never end up in my situation...and Im being serious not sarcastic. You have no idea the trauma of being victims of a home invasion and pray you are lucky enough to never know since you obviously do not own a gun and will rely of the police to help you. And how dare you make such an assinine statemnet as
I hope the crook who has come to take them , will thank you with a nice clean shot between the eyes, because if you are not part of the solution , you are the problem.
WOW just WOW. My life was going to be taken by a low life scum who had NO IDEA I had a gun! If it were not for my gun I may not be here and my child may not either!
I know first hand when I lived in Milwaukee and the stalker that I had a restraining order blocked me in the driveway of a police station, they let him go, he then came to my house, again, and had it not been for my .38, I would be dead!
robby-1839487, I know more about 1 line of the constitution than you know about life, you are the @!$%#en idiot that will get the nice clean shot between the eyes because you DONT have a @!$%#en clue, you are a clueless idiot, I, on the other hand, am a crack shot shooter that will drop a criminal coming in my door before he takes his second step in,
I suggest you go to school, learn about the constitution and become an american citizen before you post another line, and show your idiocy even more, JERK
The residents of Chicago that voted this idiot into office should issue a nation wide apology. Who is he to tell me what to do with my gun. He should read the statistics. Violent crime is down in states where concealed to carry has been allowed. Chicago, of all cities, could certainly benefit from a few hardworking, honest individuals with hand guns... The crime rate would certainly be reduced... Vote this dumb a@# out of office... American need to stand up and take our country back from the politicians... You're vote counts, use it.
Good for Mayor Daly! There is no need for anyone to own a gun. We don't live in the wild west, we don't have to hunt for our food. It's time for a change. It's time to evolve. You just know that the NRA is a lobbying group for the gun manufacturers. It's all about the money. I'm so glad that he is going against this ruling by the Supreme Court. I hope that he and his new laws will prevail.
I am in my late 50's and of all the people I have known who have had guns in their homes, only my neighbor across the street ever found a "need" to use his. He killed his wife and then himself, leaving three young children. I watched her relatives wash the blood out of the kitchen, through the garage and down the driveway. I won't go into all the damage it did to the children.
You have more to fear from those close to you in times of stress than you do from strangers. I would rather see Mayor Daley's law go into effect, even if it is not perfect, than have nothing.
As long as there are criminal elements who only respect those who can defend themselves, there will be a need for private citizens to have access to and know how to use a wide rage of self defense tools. It's great that you've never had to defend yourself, and I hope your bubble never bursts. Not everyone is that fortunate.
That being said, the point really is that the mayor is trying to overrule the Constitution of the United States, which states that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. He is therefore a domestic enemy of the Constitution.
Well Gaye, As the victim of a home invasion in the middle of the day while napping with my small child, I would say YOUR WRONG. Its damn near like the Wild West when people break into your home and tie you up and tell you THEY ARE GOING TO KILL YOU! I was lucky that he didnt tie my hands well enough and I was in my bedroom where he had initally woke us with my .40 cal S&W in my nightstand. I waited until he left us alone and began gathering up our belongings. I saw my chance and got my gun and when he came back in I shot him. If I had not had my gun the police would be arriving at a crime scene instead of a crime in progress and I would have propbably been on the 10 O Clock News either with my child as the second victim or a whitness to her mothers murder. Sorry I was not about to wait and see if he was going to follow through with that threat but he did not have anything covering his face so I took him at his word. I WILL NOT GIVE UP MY GUN...PERIOD! The police cannot be everywhere all the time.
BTW: Criminals dont need the OK to have a gun or a grenade, automatic weapon, bullet proof vest, rocket launchers, etc. I have seen all of these in the big cities. Drug & Gun Runners will do what they please and dont care what the law is. Sorry...Maybe Next Time
Lest you all forget the Civil War...this particular RIGHT is not about protecting ourselves from a neighboe or burglar...it is about protecting ourselves from Rogue Police/Military forces...people please do research before commenting!
In an ideal world guns would have no place and there would be no need of rules, regulations, or any form of law and a judicial system. There would be no government, no taxes, etc.
Obviously our world has seldom been ideal, regardless of religious belief or non-belief.
For myself, I fully respect the passion of those who oppose firearms and personnal ownership. However, I respectfully request that they recognize my personnal choice to support firearm ownership within "reasonable" rules and regulations. As long as I am willing to conform to reasonable regulations, I should be allowed to own and maintain firearms to the fullest extent of my personnal rights.
Mayor Daly is being "unreasonable" and those that agree with that assessment that have the power to elect someone else need to stand up for their rights, they need to make their opinion known where it counts, at the polls.
The 2nd amendment was not crafted as a defense against crime per se. It was crafted to provide citizens with the ability to defend themselves from government over reach.
I do believe that guns do not make our imperfect world better, but they are a fact of life and cannot be removed from existence.
We need to focus attention on dealing with the bad actors (criminals). Maximum jail time for offenses committed with guns, that means that if you rob someone at gunpoint, you go to jail for attempted murder not assault with a deadly weapon, and no plea bargaining or deals.
onewoman, sorry about your experience, but for every time something like that happens, hundreds of other people successfully defend themselves and their families from being raped murdered etc. Would you ban cars because there are accidents? Would you ban Christmas because of all the fires, and fighting amongst relatives? I do not wish to live in a dictatorship, and I do not acknowledge the rights of others to take rights from me.
Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago is a shining example of an arrogant criminal politician. He apparently only finds it necessary to obey the laws he agrees with versus the law of the land. Dick YOU are not above the law and need to be voted out of office and replaced by someone that believes honest citizens have the right to protect their families and themselves from harm. Dick does NOT want you to have that right, he only wants criminals, police and HIS Security Detail to be armed. Dick was also the one responsible for covering up the "Hired Trucking Scandal," and the demolition of the Meigs Field Airport for which the city was fined. Gun control has proven to be detrimental to honest citizens, only the criminals prosper under it. Vote Richard Daley out of office and Stop Gun Control!
No association with the NRA, am an independant, hate conservative party and own several guns and do happen to live in the wild west where when drinking water becomes as valuable as oil I will be waiting with my arms to defend my own supply! Where will you be begging for water?
No, jrone. You just didn't realize that the (usually pretty quiet) majority of Americans actually favor reasonable rights to own guns as provided by our Constitution.
I'm an independent as well, do NOT belong to the NRA, and I do own guns. Unlike "nurse", who has justifiable reason to be more concerned, I do not think the country is in danger of collapse or "wild west" justice. I do, however, sleep a lot more comfortably knowing that, if someone should break into my house intending me harm, I can deal with it myself, rather than asking the nice criminal to wait while I call 911.
Gaye guida, you haven't thought out all the scenarios. I agree, there should be some gun control. For example, the thug that's going to break into your house, rape you or a family memeber, then shoot you. That guy should not have a gun. You, however, should have one on your hip so that when he breaks into your house, you can shoot him as opposed to being the one getting shot.
I've got to agree, whether you choose to own a gun or not this is a flagrant attack on Law Abiding citizens. Criminals do not live by the rule of law. It's been proven, gun laws don't work.
The Gun control lobby is pretty whacked out, to think that all of these automatic weapons in the hands of Mexican drug lords were purchased legally in the US is a pretty wild statement, I mean considering The ATF knows where every legal automatic weapon in the country is.
Gun control people will lie through their teeth to get their way.. I think I'll go and join the NRA! Oops I'm already a member.
The south side of Chicago may as well be the wild west . . . you have obviously never been. People have the right to protect themselves. The criminals have guns . . . words and negotiations don't work on gangbangers or Iran . . . when will you wake up and realize this is the real world and some of us actually have to live in it.
Some of us will NOT stand by and wait for the police to come and rescue us, we will defend ourselves and our families from harm versus watching thugs rape, rob or kill them. You are obviously not prepared to do that, how sad for your family and or friends that may depend on you for help. Just tell them to WAIT for the police to arrive as they are being beaten or raped. Remember, it takes a good man with a gun to stop a bad man with a gun. Some men stand their ground while some are what we call Sheeple, you sir are a Sheeple!
Why is it that the cities with strictest gun control laws are the very same cities with the highest rate of gun violence. Do the "crazies" move to these cities? Perhaps, just perhaps, the criminals that use handguns find these cities with an unarmed populace to be true paradise and easy pickings. You couldn't convince me that the good Mayor doesn't have armed security. Therefore, the Mayor and the criminals should be the only ones with firearms?
Oh great another attack to our 2nd amendment. And "gaye guida" you are a idiot if you support our rights to be taken away we have guns for a reason and that's not to use them to kill one another but to defend ourselves when our Government gets out of control and imposes Martial Law. So if you want Government to control every thing you do in your life and want to have no defense to it then move to another country that doesn't let it's citizens have the right to own firearms. That's what Hitler did when he got control he took away the peoples guns. A defenseless population is a easy controlled population. So either you work for the destruction of the Constitution or you are just a complete idiot!
In the spirit of finding common ground, let me state that one of the classic pro-gun lobby's arguments is that we need to enforce the laws that are on the books. I completely agree with that statement. And I think the pro-gun lobby adage "guns don't kill people, people kill people" is simplistic and insulting. The phrase would be more accurate if it said: "gonuns don't kill people, but it sure makes killing a lot easier!"
I suspect the Supreme Court would not uphold the Chicago law that restricts the number of firearms one can purchase. It would be like saying you have the right to freedom of speech but the government can limit the number of times you may exercise it.
Actually, the law restricts the number of firearms that can be "in working order." But I agree with you Colin. That definition is so hopelessly vague that the Supreme Court will strike it down immediately. How could you ever enforce or even define it?
Why not stand behind this decision? All the super patriots can quit waving their flags and quoting the Second Amendment and for once, recognize that it is PRECISELY the American way to allow those living in a city to adopt whatever legitimate laws they deem fit. If you don't live in Chicago, what's it to you? And if you do, and you want to own guns, then move to a city that is more tolerant. As long as the country provides a choice of cultures and the freedom to choose which city we can call home, where's the foul? Chicago residents who are unhappy--for any reason--are free to move. I, for one, would welcome them in my neighborhood. If we all voted with our feet and our pocket books, maybe we'd all have a lot less to whine about.
Let the criminal element have their guns, ban the bullets. Very simple. Constitution say's nothing about ammunition. Citizens have the right to bear arms, it's another story about ammo.
Let criminals throw guns at each other instead of killing kids.
When the constitution was written, there was no such thing as a bullet, so yes you shoud be able bear all the arms you want, provided those arms were available for sale at the time the second ammendment was written.
yep, lets sprinkle some more of that fairy dust or hit the rewind button and take the entire country/world back to the day the 2nd amendment was ratified.
Then we would not be having this discussion over the Internet, no oil spill in the gulf, oh and by the way slavery would still be legal.
But I would still have the right to arm myself and shoot anyone that threatened my life or property.
Oh and when two people disagreed, pistols at 10 paces was considered a fair fight. Gun Control is about being able to hit what you aim at!!!
Does this place an undue burden on law abiding citizens who want to own a handgun? Maybe - maybe not. Will the criminals who are the cause of this new ordinance follow it? Very unlikely.
But that's probably the point - if they do follow it, great. If not, now there are new reasons to lock them up.
Not saying that I like Daley. But for goodness' sake people - how are we ever supposed to get good honest politicians in office when getting picked to death and getting raked over the coals comes with the job (no matter how honest you may be)? Would you ever want to put your life in the spotlight like that?
IMHO, our country could stand for a little more critical thinking on the issues and a lot less of slamming someone only on the basis of their political views. Maybe then the smart honest people would actually consider running.
The truth is, we don't have people like that. Everyone's at the mall, scratching their a$s, reaching into their fanny pack and buying sneakers with lights in them. When you have selfish ignorant citizens you get selfish ignorant leaders. And term limits don't help. All you do is get a new bunch of selfish ignorant leaders. So maybe just maybe it's not the politicians who suck, maybe something else sucks around here. I.E. The Public.
I agree that the majority of our population is way too into themselves.
But come on, there has to be SOMEONE out there that you admire and think might do some good if they were in office.
The sad thing is, our country has gone to a level of discourse where all we can do is call each other crazy left wing liberal sissies and idiotic gun-loving morons. (Just look at the rest of the board).
As much as everyone wants to complain at how corrupt the government is, (me included sometimes) we have to take a good hard look at ourselves and how we treat our neighbors before we can expect anything to improve.
I agree there has to be someone our there that will actually do good for our country if they got into office. But the last time someone good got into office he got his head blown off. Sad to say it but it will most likely happen again if an good honest person got into office.
This guy is perfect example of an Elitist pig who deserves to prosecuted as a Traitor to our country. I can only hope that the people of that state boot this scoundrel out of office come next election. He hates the Constitution, He has contempt for the little people...
I'm sure all the murderers and rapists will go out and register there guns now.
No this only burdens the people who want to obey the law...
uncommon common sense is greatly lacking here....
you are right Rogers... All he is doing is punishing the lawful citizens of Chicago.

I already have my FOID card application pending and I have picked out a nice .45 auto for about $500 once I get all my ducks in a row.
Chicago is not for the timid. If you come here to vacation, the downtown heart of the city is quite safe. It is when one ventures out beyond well lit and populated streets where the danger can occur. Just as in any city on earth.
So the people who live in the City of Chicago should be at the mercy of criminals? That is so sad that you think that way.
hell with that, its MY house, I will lock up what I want and leave unlocked what I want, I will keep as many loaded guns as I want in MY house, I owne my house, and if I lived in chicago, I would sue them on those issues, no one has done it before on gun issues, but what goes on in my bedroom or my house is noone elses business, and that HAS been decided in the supreme court before, just not on fire arms, Drugs are illegal, the constitution does not give me the right to bear cocain, I know that, but it does give me the right to bear arms,
Derrick-1653281
Please don't talk about the constitution, you can't read so who cares what you have heard. I agree though, keep as many loaded guns in YOUR home as you want, and on his way out with them, I hope the crook who has come to take them , will thank you with a nice clean shot between the eyes, because if you are not part of the solution , you are the problem.
Robby...
And how dare you make such an assinine statemnet as
WOW just WOW.
Daley is seriously misguided if he thinks gun laws will keep criminals from getting guns.
It only prevents law abiding people from getting them and defending themselves.
Criminals will commit crimes no matter what.
And if tomorrow the counry went to hell and a hand basket, you would die of starvation. While the gun owners can go out and get their own food.
Are you serious? Have you ever been physically attacked in your home? Give away your own rights but keep the fu<k away from mine!
Maximum jail time for offenses committed with guns, that means that if you rob someone at gunpoint, you go to jail for attempted murder not assault with a deadly weapon, and no plea bargaining or deals.
mrducks, nicely put!
onewoman, sorry about your experience, but for every time something like that happens, hundreds of other people successfully defend themselves and their families from being raped murdered etc.
Vote Richard Daley out of office and Stop Gun Control!

great. another honest chicago politician helping out the little people.
gaye guida you ignorant @!$%#ing bitch. I hope chicago crime runs rampant well into that pimp sitting in the white house term ends.
is this the nra room?
This is really sickening. Only the thugs will have the guns and Daley is right in there with them, protecting them.
Voters of that city better wake up.
The criminals have guns . . . words and negotiations don't work on gangbangers or Iran . . . when will you wake up and realize this is the real world and some of us actually have to live in it.
gay guy
Nicely said!
No, just the common sense room. Oh wait, the Brady kids already copyrighted that one...
"Is this the NRA room?"
Then all will be happy :)
yep, lets sprinkle some more of that fairy dust or hit the rewind button and take the entire country/world back to the day the 2nd amendment was ratified.
