Speaking your mind is not allowed under these circumstances, it is punishable under the UCMJ. All military people are taught never to disparage a superior or a fellow supervisor when subordinates can hear, NEVER! Anyone who did it to him would get the boot and so should he!

Do you really know the meaning of honor? Do you really understand the meaning of military tradition and respect for the chain of command? You speak of your "book". Who is the author? Sir Thomas Lipton?

Anyone who has served knows that public disagreement with your superiors is insubordination. A commander can never outwardly show insubordination to his commander without the loss of his credibility to his troops. Military discipline is out the door. The civilian government is superior to the military for a reason. Just like MacArthur and Patton, Generals don't make foreign policy, they enforce it. He can never again effectively lead men, he must go, and his staff with him.

He has broken the military code. One reason we have a strong military is that there is a rule that you don't disagree publicly with the commander in chief. This could cause a breakdown in discipline. I thought everybody knew that!

McCrystal may be 100% correct in his assessments and statements regarding the capabilities and policies of the Administration. As a former USAF officer, based on what I know and have observed, I would probably agree with him and privately might have made my feelings known.

Presidents don't usually seek out people that fundamentally disagree with them to serve on their staffs. They don't usually look for the 'best' Secretary of State, they look for the 'best' Secretary of State that will do what they tell them and are from their own party. McCrystal is absolutely an honorable man, and you don't know if he did express his misgivings and comments to the Administration. He may just have obvious disagreements with his boss.

As a commanding officer you serve in that capacity at the discretion of the Commander-in-Chief. Having your personal thoughts and beliefs made public was the mistake. Like I said, even MacArthur couldn't be forgiven disparaging the CinC.

The only thing that matters is the reality for the troops, and until I read about Gen. McChrystal's arbitrarily restrictive rules of engagement that prevent local US commanders and their troops from killing our enemies and destroying all their stuff, this appeared to be just a lot of political nonsense, but I draw the line at asinine rules of engagement, because in the grand scheme of everything, when our soldiers have too many rules, it becomes impossible to win wars . . .

Equally disturbing is the apparent fact that Gen. McChrystal's staff cannot keep their personal opinions to themselves, and his staff should be the first to be fired . . .

Replace the general with someone who is focused intently on killing our enemies and destroying all their stuff--not someone who wants to win "hearts and minds" . . .

I can see both sides of the picture. Yes there is military command and politics should be set aside. And yes the truth hurts. He shouldn't be fired or demoted though. Everyone understands that, especially in the military, you do NOT publicly denegrate your superiors. He should be a cautionary tale.

McCrystal has a career of being successful. He actually did not believe in the Iraqi surge, but he did it. Now Obama said he was going to do whatever it takes to overwhelm and win in Afghanistan. Bush's effort was not strong enough.

The reality is that Obama cut the minimum strength of the surge in Afghanistan, added even more red tape to our soldiers. When McCrystal requested the remaining 40,000 that equaled the minimum Bush's staff recommended, Obama cut that to 30,000. Granted he did twist NATO for the other 10,000, but none-the-less McCrystal's staff is less than confident of success.

McCrystal & his staff did us a favor to let this out. They are like the average American - they HATE to lose, just as General Patton once said. We need to know that our Commander-in-Chief is not up to the task. The news media is hiding it and Obama and his party don't want to admit it.

He should be removed. Being a general is not an independent position. You serve the President and if you're insuborinate, you should be removed. Two of the best past incidents I can think of are Lincoln & McClellan and Truman & MacArthur. Both of those Presidents were absolutely correct to fire their respective generals after they demonstrated insubordination/definance. The generals serve the President, not the other way around and if a general starts to forget this, they should be immediately removed.

As military men, they should have known better. Their comments reeked of disrespect, lack of honour, and yes, a lack of discipline. Not only that, but they were stupid - I mean they were talking to a reporter, what did they think would happen? That right there makes me question their judgment.

It is one thing for the General to question the President because he is still an American. It is another thing to refuse a direct order. Anyone who wants the general's head probably should watch "The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell". Colonel Mitchell was forced to resign for his "disparaging remarks" and died a few years later. However, a number of years later his insight and wisdom being seen in a different light, Colonel Mitchell was posthumously promoted to the rank of Major General (that's TWO STEPS UP for those civilians reading this; extremely uncommon)!

The oath of office of every commissioned officer requires due faith and allegiance to "the officers appointed above me." Correct remarks, but insubordination demands resignation. McChrystal did this on purpose for the good of America - to force naive dove appeaser Obama to get tougher on terrorism. McChrystal knew he would probably have to resign as a result. Obama will have no choice but to kick his "ass." And this will set the stage for Gen. Petraeus running against Obama in 2012.

He's not a civilian. The fact that this article appeared in the first place shows that McChrystal's command is disorganized and out of control. I think it shows a distinct lack of leadership. Even under Bush the dissenting generals were civilians when they spoke their minds, not active duty in a theater of war. The damage to morale will be extensive and McChrystal is responsible. Allowing this sort of thing to go on will only undermine the CIC. Also makes me wonder if HRC is plotting for 2012. Two publicity black eyes for Obama courtesy of the Clintons in as many weeks.

Generals, or any enlisted personnel, by LAW do not have the luxury to shoot their mouth off. He should have been fired and then called to the White House.

This is not "political nonsense". An article in Rolling Stone?? Come on people; no matter what political persuasion someone may be, this is inexcusable under all circumstances. And for all the Newsvine "rightwingers", this war was one the Obama administration had to "restart" because of the last administration's zealous desire to leave it and invade a sovereign country, while the Taliban and Al Qaeda reconstituted in Afghanistan.

This whole ordeal isn't certain "aides" problems; it's squarely on McChrystal. This type of "Jerry Springer" sensationalism has no place in any part of our government, and the General should be given the opportunity to resign. If he refuses, he should be immediately be fired, and all aides that can be identified should be dishonorably discharged. MacArthur found this out the hard way also, and his blunder was nowhere near the scale of this matter.

I think those that are so quick to agree with the general here would have a completely different attitude if John McCain was president. This hypocrisy is disgusting because lives are at stake here.

For those of you that don't understand...this is not any Joe Blow on the street. This is a military leader. Our husbands, sons, and daughters that follow his lead of "insubordination" can get killed. If you were ever in the military you would understand that we defend democracy/freedom of speech, but within the military orders are orders - period. A General (or any rank) may ask for clarification of orders, but may never refuse or publicly criticize an order. He/she can save his/her opinions for retirement or is always allowed to resign. Public criticism causes confusionwithin the ranks, which causes troop deaths. Any capable leader knows this. Thanks for taking the time to consider this.

Obama is POTUS - sad to say. I know for a fact that the service members had far greater respect for Bush as their Commander in Chief. They have little to no respect for Obama, the Novice in Chief. This being said - it is against regulations (or was) to publicly disrespect the POTUS when you are in uniform not matter how high up the ranks you go. With the announcement of the draw down by Obama has shown he has NO problem compromising the saftey of our troops and the civilians. These guys as you put it are miliitary officers, they gave up their right to speak their opinion about the orders of the President when they signed up. As every military person knows you do NOT have the right, while in the military, to publically comment on the orders you are given nor do you ahve the right to disparage your leaders. Generals are not permitted to disagree with their commander in chief in public. Any disagreements should be kept private - that's part of military discipline. It's not even an unwritten rule, it is part of the UCMJ.

My daughter has friends who are currently active duty in the MArines, Army and Air Force. They are stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some are on their third tour there. Other friends of hers were in the Battle of Fallujah and came home safe. They talk with me about many things they encountered and endured during their time there. So I have current knowledge of what our servicemen are feeling and what they encountered there. Yes I did question some of the things Bush did towards the end but I was a civilian at that time. Don't don't try to paint me with the "You must hate America...blah blah blah" paint brush for disliking Obama as the Novice in Chief. After reading over 50 quick comments above I'm amazed at how many people would like to just trample on the First Amendment. Freedom of Speech includes comments about the President. Although some people here might not like it, we are NOT a police state or monarchy. The Bill of Rights is the highest law in the land. No doubt about it, McChrystal needs to go. Like it or hate it, Obama is the commander-in-chief and what he did is in violation of the most basic of military code. Regardless of how he personally feels about the president, he shouldn't be running his mouth to the media about it, nor letting his staff do it either. What McChrystal did is a courts martial offense - he should be punished like every other soldier who commits insubordination. He should lose his star and be given the bird, then forced to retire.

I think the admiral was based in Florida, but there was a general as well based in Iraq. I'm going to have to look it up since my memory seems to be failing me. Been trying to remember the exact circumstance and the name, but it was a sometime before the admiral was relieved. Criticizing the chain of command isn't giving aid and comfort. Or there would of been a lot more commanders and officers relieved or resigned during Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Somalia,.... etc. There was plenty of criticism after them on policy, equipment and troops used, and tactics used.

First off, the word is dual, not duel. Our military completely embraces the concept of criticism to further the advance of strategy and tactics.

Let me get this straight - you are saying is anyone who serves in the National Gaurds are not military members? Then explain why there are so many Reservists and National Guards members pulling duty in Iraq and Afgahnistan instead of the Regular military?
Joining the National Guard is not ducking military service. They must follow the same chain of commands, they are punishable under the UCMJ and must meet all qualifications that a regualr military member must. Do you feel if he had joined the Coast Guard would he would have been be a "dodger"? In 1971 my husband (and I) enlisted in the Air Force and did not go to Viet Nam - does that make him a draft dodger? you got some twisted squirmy thinking going on there bud.

Military members are not bound to follow blindly all orders given to them by people of higher rank. Articles 90, 91 and 92 of the UCMJ require the obedience of LAWFUL orders. An order which is unlawful not only does not need to be obeyed, and obeying such an order can result in criminal prosecution of the one who obeys it. Military courts hold military members accountable for their actions even while following orders -- if the order was illegal.

"I was only following orders," has been unsuccessfully used as a legal defense in hundreds of cases - most notably by Nazi leaders at the Nuremberg tribunals . According several articles I have read, the Vietnam War presented the United States military courts with more cases of the "I was only following orders" defense than any previous conflict. The decisions during these cases reaffirmed that following manifestly illegal orders is not a viable defense from criminal prosecution.

Marcia, the National Guard is considered by many (wrongfully) to be "semi-military". Yes it is military, however - Bush obviously joined it to avoid the "hardship" of Vietnam. It was a cushy assignment in comparison (at that time).

Coast Guard was present in force in Viet Nam, Persian Gulf, and Iraq. Sorry that you seem not to be aware of these facts.

I am a Coast Guard vet of Viet Nam, and the Cutter Winnebago fired over 5,000 rounds of 5" projectiles in support of ground troops in coastal areas.

CG 82' Patrol Boats also were in force with Operation Market Time interdicting arms smuggling that had been ongoing prior to their deployment. They served also to augment the efforts of the riverine patrols in the Mekong Delta.

We had a chance to capture or kill Bin Laden. We failed because we thought it would be better if the Afghans did it. Right in the beginning of the war we knew his exact location and we sat on it. I do think that was a mistake. Now Bin Laden is Pakistan? We can't go over there and get him?

Anyways when people are being oppressed don't you think that the strong should come in and help? Look at the Iran Election riots. The government squashed the opposition pretty easily. In the modern day the weapons the governments have are superior than what the citizens have. And maybe that has always been the case, but today's weapons are far more leathal and devastating without a lot of skill. Sure you can drop food and other aid over there, but what does that really accomplish.

During the first gulf war a lot of people said that we should have finished saddam off. I've said that we rushed into the war without having proof of WMD. The problem is the fact that we do have an Administration that are wimps and PC and do not understand the sacrifice of the military. Our soldiers are willing to put their lives on the line for people they don't even know. The Administration just wants everyone to be happy, smiling buddies and work some back room deals with them. As a former military member I too have spoken uncannily about a leader in my chain of command, and when I was brought before the Colonel, I told him that if he wouldn't have put me in the position under a mentally challenged leader, I would have followed the orders. I wasn't about to back down from that leader, even though he was in my chain of command. Two days later that leader was arrested and eventually convicted of child molestation. All charges against me for failure to follow a lawful order were dismissed.

When you know you are right, nothing should be able to make you change your mind. Stand firm and stand up for what you believe in otherwise you will sway back and forth never gaining anything.

I am retired military. I did not like President Clinton, but I never said so in front of my soldiers. I voted for President Obama, and I served under President Reagan loyally. They argue against the requirement to buy health insurance even though there is established precidence for the Government to require the purchase of items and if the purchase would be a hardship the government would supply (Gun Act 1783 I think was the date requiring all males over the age of 16 to own a gun and 100 rounds of shot and sufficient powder and wadding). There has also been times when the government has required citizens to purchase other items.

They scream that English should be our national language disreagrding the writers of our Constitution who all spoke out against that.

When the tea party starts dealing with the real Constitutional Issues than i might support them until then they are simply a group of misguided people who, as a whole, do not like this President and have found a way to voice their outrage without being called to task.

They have a moral and legal obligation to the U.S. Constitution and not to those who would issue unlawful orders, especially if those orders are in direct violation of the Constitution and the UCMJ.

I, personally, am torn about the 4th amendment issue. I did not agree with it at the time and I don't now, however, we are in desperate times where there are terrorists who are attacking us on our own soil, and, sadly, some of them are home-grown terrorists. Can I assume by your last paragraph that you are in favor of socialism over capitalism? If so, can you name one country where that system is successful? I work with Russian immigrants and they are floored that this country would be following that path. They say...why do you think we came here but to escape that type of government.

As I said before, the Tea Party is in support of less government. If you are in favor of more, I can only assume that you depend on the government (the taxpayers) for your support. The Tea Party is not a cure all and an end all, but it is a large group of American citizens who love this country and want to protect her freedoms. If you have issues that you think the Tea Party should address, then perhaps you should join us and bring those issues to the front burner. You see, I don't see the dems, reps or libertarians addressing most of the issues...so where do your loyalties lie?

I hope I haven't come across as hateful but I just can't stand to hear people spewing what the media reports of the Tea Party and not researching it themselves. Try to remember that when you join the Armed Forces, you give up some rights too, including the right to make public comments like the General did. There are real differences between those in uniform and civilians. Some of you need to brush up on that, apparently.

Have enough respect for Pat...it's Tillman! Although not a person who has a military background, I do have some knowledge of rule of command and agree there should never be any public demonstration of conflict between a leader and a subordinate. However, this is another incident that reaffirms lack of leadership by Obama and his thin skin. What always amazed me with him and military personnel was his token involvement in speaking with his military leaders. Remember the general he gave 10 minutes to on an airplane on his way from receiving the Nobel (?) prize? Just like his reluctance to speak to an exec from BP. What gives? He who stresses "talk" seems to ignore it when he's responsible for getting real information from someone on the line.

Nothing the General said was incorrect, especially the V.P. Biden comment, if the President wants to clamp down on first amendment rights, he should start with Biden. If the President fires the General, they will face each other again in the next election and he will be a one term president.

Let's just say for the sake of arguement what the General said was true.

Why in the world would say anything close to what was said the a magazine that you know will be available for public reading.

As far as him being President he can't even keep his mouth shut an manage a war in which he will never fire a shot himself.

If you never served in the military in wartime, you flatly cannot understand the importance of chain of command and how insubordination subverts the chain of command. Even a 4 star general understands this. He will be given a choice, retire immediately or face a court martial. I'm surprised that the Chairman of the JCS has taken action already. It shows that our military is in disarray and the chain of command means nothing. Insubordination during combat can result in the death penalty.
