Acutally no, Peru doesn't have the death penalty. But the prison he is in is a rather notorious $hithole. Slop for food, rats, lots killers. I've heard it's makes the turkish prison in Midnight Express look like a Holiday Inn. Fores' father has influence in Peru, much like van der Sloot's father had influence in Aruba... Right now, he's in a "special" section" away from the general population. He probably won't last a month in there, once he's convicted...and sentenced, I'm sure someone in the Flores family will pay off someone to "take care" of him while in prison.

Oh how the mighty has fallen!!! It's a long long ways from being the darling of your parents eye and growing up in spoiled rotten, over-indugled, self-serving, rich kid life style to the bowls of Castro Castro. No wonder he's freakin' out. I feel great empathy for people struggling with a serious mental illness but HIS case, I have no sympathy for him. Too bad, so sad!

I use to transport people with a wide variety of pyshical and mental conditions. The average person has little knowledge that the "normal-looking" person next to them may have a debilitating mental illness. Most "normal" people can't imagine the hell a person with extreme mental illness faces daily trying to function in normal society.

Mental illness is still a largely ignored topic. In many cultures it is strickly taboo to talk about, even between family members. Van der Sloot is a poster child for that problem.

It always amazes me that so many parents, especially those who's fathers are in position of power, REFUSE to acknowledge their child is mentally ill. The prevailing attitude is: If you don't acknowledge it exsists then it doesn't. His parents should have had this psychopath in therapy even if he didn't want to go, the second they discovered he had beat the family dog to death as a child. Animal torture is a RED flag that worse is yet to come. And the worse HAs come for Natalie and Stepanie. Lord knows how many others have been killed by Joran during his jaunts around the world.May GOd have mercy on his soul because he's earned none here on earth by us.

Van der Sloot is a notorious liar. He's been doing it regularly since (and perhaps before) the Holloway case first happened. Whatever drops from his lips, he will recant, and then tell another "story." That's the way he operates. He has concocted and re-concocted so many stories related to Holloway, that a tried and true mystery writer would be confused. This is no different than what he's doing now. Tell one story, recant, tell another, re-explain, tell another, "it was forced," tell another, "I was intimidated," and on and on. Again, it's his modus operandi.

As far as the Peruvian prison goes, I would imagine, once convicted, he will get the max of 35 years. On the 34th year and 364 days, I would also imagine that he will be killed or have a terrible "accident" while still incarcerated. Just my thoughts on that one.

For those who don't understand, the US can't prosecute Van der Sloot for the murder of Holloway, either. The incident happened in a Aruba, and it is under their jurisdiction as to the prosecution of the crime. (I'd love to see him prosecuted, but that's not the way international law works.)

For the people who cry "Innocent until proven guilty," that is not necessarily true in all countries. Americans make the mistake of imagining that all laws are the same throughout the world, and they're not. Just as some folks believe that it's a "free" country, they need to re-examine the limitations on "free." Homeland Security has changed or limited that "free" definition as well.

I am a dog lover and have friends who bred show dogs. Thank you for your insights about people with mental illness. That is why, to a certain extent, I do feel sorry for this guy.

HOWEVER, I know his parents knew better and I am sad that they did NOTHING about it.

I do not know how many of you all know that in this country, if you believe that someone will hurt themself or others, you can petition that the person be institutionalized.

HI Karen, I also believe his parents have known a LONG time that their son has serious behavior problems. It can be overwhelming to admit your child is not perfect and seek help. But if you do not step in at the first sign of a problem and seek help, the problem is NOT going to get better and may progressivly worse over time.They failed their child on a global scale.

I CAN judge them as I have walk a mile in their shoes, so to speak. My own daughter's behavioral problems started at age 3. We would tell the Doctors if it wasn't for what we know about mental health issues she would have been a victim of child abuse or dead. (You should have seen the looks we got!) She could drive you to the point of insanity with her ODD, ADHD and LD and medical issues. We used the term "tag-team parenting" to describe our coping and parenting skills. (TAG! You're it. Take over before I kill her!) But we kept at it, got her the help she needed and learned to appreciate every little change and improvement she made. She so desperately wanted to be accepted by her peers but was well aware that she did not fit in at school and was different then other kids. She's worked hard to get to where she is today. At 27 years old she still struggles with social issues and her LD is a never ending source of frustrations for her but she keeps working to over come it. She is being successful attending regular classes (the first time in her life she does not have an IEP or modified work assignments) at the community college and is living on her own, more or less. We have to pay her rent as she can't live on the $500.00 a month she gets from SSI.

Unlike the Van der Sloot family we were not rich. We always found the money to take her to get help. With all their money they could have got it the best Doctor's available early on. Maybe if they had, Natalie and Stepanie would be alive today. And Van der Sloot is not a dummy despite his mental illness. He is well aware he has a problem and should have sought help. I wonder if he is suffering from very mild Asperger syndrome or has High-functioning autism.

Someone (Greta, maybe??) was inside a room there just like Joran's. Very thick, hard walls (stucco or concrete??) Other guests/residents probably wouldn't have heard anything. Very small room--maybe a high, small window(??) Apparently, he'd borrowed money from her to play poker; he lost, so he owed her money. She possibly was following him to be repaid--that was a guess the reporter said.

Apparently, both the girl & Joran were frequent poker players; he'd lost his money that night. I always wondered why she walked with her head down as she followed him to his room. The report said she may have gone to his room to be repaid for money he borrowed from her. He probably "repaid" her by brutally murdering her!!! The way the law works in Peru is very different. Nobody is going to care about a nights worth of video but they will care that a young woman was killed by a foreigner who has confessed. Coerced into giving his confession? Can he prove it? Doubtful. He can try and retract all he wants now but the initial confession will stand. It is over for him and good riddance.

I see your point about defense attorneys but realistically you and I both know that they dont need the DNA to convict this turd. He already claimed he killed her and now claimed he didnt do it. The Peruvian authorities must use VDS's DNA as evidence to nail the coffin shut. Trust me when I tell you, DNA does not lie. It is unique to that individual. His defense team will have a hard time trying to prove it was the maintenance man or the housekeeping staff, especially when they have video footage of no one entering that room for two days.

There were signs of a struggle between VDS and Flores. There will be VDS's dna in her cuts and bruises and on the actual murder weapon which was a blood stained shirt which he used to suffocate her. You can't fool DNA it's impossible. Police will be able to make the determination on when she died, how she died, and the angle in which she was killed. They'll also be able to tell whether or not he was right handed or left handed. He also rolled her body up in a sheet...his dna will be present on that sheet. Thats pretty convincing right there.

I think Peruvian police arent going to take any chances with this one. There is such a public outcry over this murder and the fact that Flores's father is a very prominent figurehead down there. This kid is good as dead when they put him in general population. He will not be missed.

THX, I was thinking the same thing. If dear old dad was still around, would this body have ever been found? Notice how sloppy things got without dad in the picture. In one of his previous confessions, he stated that his father helped him dispose of Natalie. Does make you wonder, doesn't it?

you know this whole thing has gotten blown out of proportion. yeah he did have a dead body in his room. but she looked at his laptop! How many people have not killed someone for looking at their laptop? I had to kill four or five people just last week for trying to touch my laptop. one example "hey can i check my email?" *<sound of neck snapping>. things happen. give the kid a break, he must of had a hard life with all that power his dad had and all their money. how would that not get into your head.? <jk>

Here's an interesting scenario which from the pieces I've put together is probably close to the truth:

First his father, the judge, helped him cover up his first murder and dispose of the evidence. Second, his mother had knowledge of the first muder and cover up and is now trying to distance herself from her troubled son to avoid being found guilty of covering up the crime.

I lOVE your idea. Let the parent's have him first. Mr. Flores and Ms. Holloway deserve that much. And you are correct, Ms. Holloway is the more formidable of the two by simply being female.

You should check out a movie called Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. Deals with that theme. It's a Korean film, but there are subtitled versions out there.

I agree totally. Perhaps the reporter should have written that an assassin and corrupt general reportedly share ther cell with a cowardly "serial killer" who targets young women. Sounds like the officials at Castro Castro got it right.
