From day one the President and his administration repeatedly stressed that BP is in charge of fixing this leak and the clean up. Since the start they were content to accept BP's low ball numbers and to leave the problem to the the oil company.
From the first explosion the administration seemed more concerned over getting stuck with the bill or getting blamed for the spill or their response to it. It seems little surprise the deception and avoidance continues.
If this would have happened on Bush's watch... the National Media would have CRUCIFIED him as they did over New Orleans, which now in the aftermath of Haiti we have learned was not a bad reaction at all... This is just one more example of the HYPOCRISY that is Obama and his "Yes we can Socialize your Medicine/Nation" Administration.
I'm no fan of the Obama administration, and I'm not gonna cry over him getting a flame lit under his ass and getting some bad publicity, but these are probably the same dopes that insist that we drill so far from shore that we get into waters that are so deep that we can't get down there and fix the problem.
Wow, President Obama did not say "Bush," he said "previous administration." Big difference. The POTUS is not interested in laying blame, he's hoping there are enough intelligent people in the U.S. that can understand what happened under the "previous administration" so it can be corrected and hopefully, take steps to avoid it happening again.
BTW, this whole BP episode started in 2001. Read up on the sex, drugs & R 'n R going on in the MMS and allowed to continue under the previous admin. Whatever may or may not have happened from 2001 through 2008 - Obama has been in office for 15 months, and had been in office for 14 months when the rig blew. One could easily question why it took a rig blow and a massive oil spill for this administration, who was going to "change" the way government worked, to notice that the department in charge of this was "too cozy" with big oil - especially given that energy legislation is one of its top priorities.
Having said that, I agree it's ludicrous to blame Obama.
But it was ludicrous to blame Bush for Katrina, too.
That certainly didn't stop anyone.
The question becomes, did people blame Clinton for Katrina? Because blaming Bush for this, is like blaming Clinton for Katrina.
It is a given that in order to LEARN FROM MISTAKES you must first ACCURATELY AND FULLY IDENTIFY THOSE MISTAKES AND THEIR RAMIFICATIONS. Thirty days later and BP/government have not forced an accurate measurement of the spill size?...have not informed the public ... As was said earlier, there's plenty of blame to go around for everybody. When the Samolis' took that American ship hostage, BO didn't publicly say anything until they were rescued and it was over. In hindsight, the Navy said "Yeah, he OKed it". It's called "covering your butt". You take the glory for success, but no blame for failure. It was almost 2 weeks before BO got his nose into this thing. That's really plugging a leak. I would like to know EXACTLY what our government did other than bad mouth BP. We have the entire US Navy at our disposal and oil is still spewing into the Gulf??? Obama did not cause this oil spill, he's trying to get it cleaned up. This mess was cause by oil people not having the guidance that should have been imposed years ago, but then we know the "BUSH'S were oil folks. This catastrophe is going on for over a month and NO ONE knows anymore than what they were told at the beginning. This issue should have been taken over after the first week by a PRE-PLANNED administrative body. All data and progress should be closely monitored in this case by the atendant agencies and decisions made accordingly.
The problem is our government has been and continues to be incompetent in all of its responsibilities. This accident was going to happen at some point. There are nearly 4,000 oil and gas platforms in the Gulf. No degree of human concern and intelligence can prevent all possible scenarios. To think it can be prevented is just as criminal as not being prepared for a event of this catastrophic magnitude.
I am in favor of offshore drilling but IF our government has agencies that are supposed to be monitoring and reacting to these types of accidents then they are responsible for the last 3 weeks of incompetence. If I and every other citizen pays for these agencies to be available to deal with these types of catastrophes our government is failing,,,,,AGAIN!
This situation has deteriorated to epic size and scope. This is when the "ready, shoot, aim" mentality must be incorporated. Whatever means necessary must be used to STOP the leak and then the impact can be evaluated. This hand wringing and finger pointing is ridiculous as millions of gallons of oil continue to pour out of a hole in the ocean. Every evaluation changes the second it is determined because more and more contamination continues.
This weekend should be the last chance to contain this mess. If the proposed attempts do NOT stop the leak more drastic and significant solutions must be undertaken. Our government is the only entity capable of this solution.

Perhaps he's letting BP fix it because it's their fault and not ours. There is nothing the government can do anyway. Only the oil industry has the technology and the experience to fight this kind of disaster, but where the government gets faulted is in not enforcing the rules before this happeneed. Obama should have gotten the responsible agencies to do their respective jobs after their 8 year vacation. They never should have been allowed to drill before having a viable disaster plan in place.

They (BP) have shown incompetence, deception, and greed in this entire disaster and it's aftermath, and should be banned from any drilling operations on US coastlines (along with Transocean, Haliburton or any others found responsible.) Any government representatives found to have contributed to this disaster through lack of enforcement, corruption, or deception should also be held accountable and removed from their position.
I am hoping President Obama will follow this path, but he needs to take control of the management of this spill from BP...immediately, and send independent experts to PERMANENTLY CAP THIS LEAK and orchestrate the clean up efforts...as well as determine measurements such as spill size. Open communication of accurate facts is owed to the American people.
DEEP WATER DRILLING SHOULD BE PERMANENTLY HALTED AT THIS TIME. Everyone should be contacting their government representatives about this.
Simply put, the Administration has dropped the ball big time on this one...
The interesting thing is that both Obama and the scientists are right. Obama's hands are still tied by the test drilling agreement made during the Bush administration and by the fact that the MMS was "re-missioned" to be more aggressive on detecting under-reporting of oil extracted than for environmental concerns. Technically, the well in question had not yet been moved into production and was, therefore, still a test well.
In addition, the Cheney energy policy places severe caps on the liability of drilling contractors (Haliburton --- $40 million), rig owners and operators (Transocean --- $40 million) and oil companies (BP --- $75 million.) The liability insurance requirements were reduced so much that they are effectively zero. These were passed into law as a part of a defense appropriations bill. The attendees and notes from all the Cheney energy policy meetings were withheld by the Bush White House and thousands of pertinent emails have "disappeared." The caps were cited by the White House as proof of how badly tort reform was needed to keep the
But the most important restriction placed on the government by the Cheney energy policy was to restrict access for 2,500 foot radius around the well site. BP has not allowed any videos of the leaks except for several clips of the main leak that last less than 30 seconds, even though the cameras (over a dozen) are running continuously. This is to prevent the videos from being used to calculate the flow rate. BP has also refused to allow any flow-monitoring devices to be placed by either the federal or state governments or by scientists.
It would require going to contracts modification courts (about a two-year process) to get the test drilling agreement changed. It would require that laws be introduced in Congress to remove or increase the liability caps (and even then it could not be done retroactively), increase the amount of liability insurance required, or allow the government complete access to all parts of the wellhead in an emergency. And even if such a bill was introduced, the GOP, together with Democratic congressmen from Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas would prevent such a bill from getting through the Senate.
What we need to watch is how much pressure is placed on BP to "voluntarily" take more than $75 million in responsibility. So far, they are only saying that $625 million is covered (BP - $75m, Haliburton - $40 million, and Transocean -$591 from recovered insurance money.) We also need to watch how safety and environmental restrictions are enforced going forward.
Because the GOP is opposing every move by Obama, they will try to block any legislation that penalizes oil companies, rig owners, or ancillary oil drilling service companies such as Haliburton. And in the past decade over 70% of oil company political contributions went to Republicans.
It is interesting to note at this point that BP America has very little in the way of assets. And Haliburton is now a Dubai-based company (who was pouring concrete at the time of 19 of 36 blowouts in the Gulf.) Transocean has gotten a "friendly" judge in Texas to rule that the rig was actually not an oil drilling rig, but a 1850's-vintage steamship. This caps their liability at the value of the "ship" and its cargo by virtue of the 1851 Streamship Liability Act.
It is also interesting to note that BP is the largest supplier of petroleum products to the U.S. military around the world. Cheney was the former CEO of Haliburton and received $60 million in "deferred compensation" during the first two years of his term. Then the rules were changed so that deferred compensation no longer had to be reported. Most estimates put Cheney's Haliburton income while Vice-President at between $200 and $650 million.
So the ranters can blame Obama, but I need to see who help write the Cheney energy policy before I even begin to listen to any blaming it onObama.

We've seen the inability of Congress to get much done in the past 6 decades that really protect our citizens and the environment. The POTUS is not the person to be blaming. More government is never the answer. More EFFICIENT government is the answer. Efficiency has never been shown to equate with size, it only hampers the process through layer upon layer of bureauacracy. But government has proven their inability to be efficient time and again. Why wasn't there a plan for this size and scope of disaster in the system by any of these agencies?
Yes, BP is responsible for their oil rigs but our government is just as responsible if they continue to argue we need more rules and regulations. How much MORE government will be required to have the appropriate plans in place ready to unleash? Twice the size? Three times the size? Our government didn't even have the fire-resistant booms necessary to attempt in-situ burns of the surface oil. Not to worry, I'm sure Obama will call on his main disaster relief person, Kevin Costner will fix it.
If Bush's lack of response after 4 days was a concern to the Left, Obama's lack of response to this mess after 4 weeks should be considered criminal.
Actually, most scientists employed by NOAA right now were hired during, and by, the Bush Administration. I've met a few scientists in my day, and if I can judge from those encounters, they are about the least political people on the planet. They do tend to be on the progressive side when they express any preference at all, as is so often the case with educated people. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure most ditch-diggers are "conservatives" - low taxes, job creation, that sort of thing appeals to them more than anyone, especially since they generally don't have enough education, which would of course have tilted them a bit more to the left.
You can take that anyway you want. Based on their profession, I would say NOAA scientists are indeed concerned about the environment, which would indicate a tendency to lean left. But most of them were hired by a conservative administration. Considering all of the above, I'd say NOAA itself must be fairly neutral (GASP!).

It is true we may have that many boats but the Federal government has'nt deployed one of them. well Moxie, unlike some who have the luxury of sitting on a fat azz all day net surfing, you might want to take into cnsideration, there are not just a handful of people out looking, but in my state hundreds of thousans, not to mention the state on each side of me as well. Thus, i also go door to door, loking for a job. See before you go on your little almighty rant, my job is welding. IF i am lucky enough to find a place that IS hireing, there are usually about 50 more people when i get there, just like me looking for that same job. THEN if i am lucky, i have enough to get an interview, usually includes a welding test, i need to be there to take it, not something you can do online. SOME jobs before you can get hired, you need to prove you have the skills, not just that you can pretend to have them, as i have seen happen from people who have taken weld tests, and failed miserably. Altho i am a fantastic welder, and my welds flawless, there are thousands out there, just like myself who can weld just as good. I have 22 yrs+ welding exsp. $ i have made in the past is a bit of a hinderance, because employers want cheap atm. When they see i steadly made 17+ per hour, they dont ask right off if i'd settle for 13 an hr, or in most cases as of late, less, not when they can hire some kid who has no shop skills, took a simple welding course, and can pass a test doing remedial welding, i mean why bother even talking to someone if you think your going to be laugheed at right? MAybe it's a bit hard for you to understand, sucking koolaide all day surfing the web, looking for crap to do while you wait for your welfare check to come in, unemployment is no diffrent btw, but not all jobs can be found online. Actually, my last 3 jobs, i got just by walking in, and asking to take a weld test, when they had no ad. Union shops dont post ads on the web, btw. (altho i despise union shops, am willing to work in one) Fact is, every place i stopped at, is looking to try and just get back the people they have on layoff..STILL.

You can blow a well fire shut on the surface becasue the blast "blows out" the big match. This is under water and is a leak. "Blowing it shut" would probably increase the leak as much as it might stop it. BP is doing what they can, the problem is they shouldn't have been allowed to drill without a recovery strategy, which they obviously don't have.
This is a difficult technology and simple minded solutions as usual don't work.
Ferro, it actually could work because the actual reservoir is almost two miles further under the bottom. There is no way a charge designed to displace large amounts of earth similar to mining charges could get to the reservoir. It would either collapse the shaft or move enough material on top of the shaft to seal it . I do not see how trying could hurt at this point.

I don't think it is in any way helpful for scientists to throw a tantrum about cataloging the damage while we are still trying to mount desperate efforts to fix the problem. My bottom line with this is Obama did NOT cause the oil spill, BP did with its careless operation of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The explosion was caused by either Blow Out Preventer failure or human failure in using the BOP. PERIOD - exclamation point. No multi billionaire, multi national corporation should get a pass on primary responsibility for what amounts to careless operation of a deep ocean oil rig. The lack of full regulation also needs to be challenged.

So far, every effort by BP to stop the flow of oil into the Gulf has been an attempt to control the flow of oil instead of just cap it off. That means recovery of oil for profit. In the meantime, it has been purposefully grossly under estimating the amount of oil flowing into the Gulf. The bottom line here is that this will be the biggest oil spill in history. mountainmike, first, let's call this what it really is - a monumental leak, not an oil spill - it's not spilling, it's leaking from a large pipe that broke. NOAA should have been there as soon as it was reported, assessing the damage, and acting on it. Because there was no policing of the leak, BP decided to try to salvage the oil, rather than shut it down, and it still is flowing. It should be the responsibility of the government to protect us from disasters that could destroy our economy. What if the terrorists blew the oil rig - wouldn't our government act on it?
All three companies, BP, Transocean and Halliburton can take blame for the actual leak. The Cheney administration can take responsibility for lax regulations (Norway requires automatic switches? Norway? Effin socialists.) The Obama administration can suck it up for not climbing on board faster and forcing the corporations to do more. There's plenty of egg for everyones face here folks.
With that being said, quit drilling in my gulf. IF our beaches are to be covered with oil I simply can't wait for this to catch the gulfstream current and end up in Rush's front yard. Let's see how "natural" this catastrophe is when his property value drops like a rock.

Bush wasn't responsible for Katrina and Obama didn't cause the leak, directly. Local gov'ts dropped the ball, repeatedly, on Katrina. They had several days worth of notice before she hit. Obama let the drilling happen without a contingency plan in place. If the morons would have had one inkling of what in the hell they were gonna do if something happened at that depth, it would be a different story. The gov't shouldn't have to come running in every time someone stubs their toe, but a little guidance, and enforcement of, on how not to stub toes wouldn't be a bad idea.

Sorry Jeremy, Obama did not let the drilling happen.....it was already in progress when he was inaugurated. All of those permits were issued long before then. It is true that the MMS should have STOPPED the drilling until all proper contingency plans were in place. That is not the role of any president, but the head of the agency or agencies involved.
As for other negative comments posted above, get your facts straight before condemning this POTUS. Read the "contracts" and definitions of terms of those "contracts." The US government cannot, under our federal laws, just go into and seize such an operation immediately upon such an event as this explosion. This is NOT a NATURAL event, but a man-made event. Comparing it to Katrina is NOT a valid comparison. It IS comparable to Exxon Valdez, and the federal response has been much more immediate and intensive than that disaster. There are many individuals, corporations, and agencies that can be blamed, and that goes back at least one to two decades. Each person involved should be held accountable once we determine all of the FACTS in this case.

Aside from Coast Guard and NOAA , there is no "response team for deepwater blowouts" controlled by Washington. The government does not have some crack team of deepwater drilling experts hidden in the Whitehouse basement, their only possible response is administrative. The oil and drilling companies are responsible ( or irresponsible ) for drilling , cleanup, stemming leaks, etc, that is where the expertise is, that is where any available tools, ships, robots, engineers, etc are. Now you can surely blame Washington for not having strict enough regulations or enforcing what regulations exist, but that blame can span many administrations, congress, Dept of Interiors, etc. The whole idea of letting the oil companies make the rules did not start last year, it started in the 60's ! BP was leasing the rig. Transocean is responsible for the drilling operation and the proper maintenance of the rig, including the BOPs. Halliburton was responsible for the cement job which was intended to seal off the formation so that they could temporarily abandon the well, and move in for completion of the well. All three of these companies have been doing this for decades without an incident like this and know what they are doing. Mother nature simply overwhelmed man this time.
BP has been doing what they can to stop this gusher -- not leak. Claiming that they are simply trying to collect the oil and not contain it is idiocy. This incident is already estimated to cost them $13.5billion, they want to stop it asap. If they can manage to seal off the well head, they can always reopen it later.

There is no way that welders (human or robotic) would be physically able to do that; the location of the break is much too cold & deep (high pressure) for that kind of a fix. That why BP had been trying to drop something on top of it.
I do wonder about the Army Corps' idea of blowing up the remaining pipe structure so that it is no longer attached to the ocean floor (where the pipe is working like a straw to bring oil to the point of the break). If the pipe was gone, would the oil continue to flow out from the bottom, or would there no longer be the physics for that to happen?
If the government didn't have it's nose into every facet of life in the USA, then when something like a disaster happens, private industry would get involved and clean it up. Not government.

MMS has NOT been dismantled yet.....that takes an act of Congress to do. Agencies are NOT at full staff.....the GOP is still blocking more than 70 key leadership positions in these very agencies/departments. Without effective leadership in the departments/agencies, who's guarding the henhouse (the rest of the staff who isn't doing the job correctly)? Rules have been watered down so much in the past several administrations (especially GOP administrations) and there is so much conflict in existing rules and laws, that even a "Philadelphia" lawyer often can't figure out all of the conflicts. That is why Transocean dug deep for that 1850's law to declare their oil rig as a "steamship" to avoid any liability.

Gee Doris, everyone blamed Bush for a hurricane why not blame Obama for the oil spill? If you are the president and it happens on your watch then you either get the credit or the blame. That's one of the pitfalls of being a "leader". When something good happens a leader praises others for the successful outcome, when some thing bad happens he accepts the responsibility. Obama has this a$$ backwards he tells us that he is the architect of the good and blame others for the bad.
There are two sides to this response..the first is mitigating the spill itself and stopping the flow and the second is trying to analyze the accident in the first place. This type of issue has never occured before, at least no in the US, so naturally there are going to be a lot of studies done.
Here is the rub however. You have more than numerous vessels, people and equipment in the area trying to deploy boom, skim the oil, deploy sorbents, cap the flow etc. Now, the researchers are trying to get into the same area to do their analysis. While the incident commander and unified command understand the need for this live research and analysis, it is difficult to work everything together without endangering the actual clean-up. Allowing research vessels along the edge of the spill to sample water for the underwater plume issue based on current would work, but agreed, it doesn't give an accurate picture of what is in the near vicintiy of the flow. This is a balancing act right now.
Eventually though, politics and the screams of the people will change the course of how this response is run but then, those same people will scream again when the spill isn't cleaned up as quickly as they believe it should/could/have been due to the higher concentration of analyzing the potential damages. It doesn't matter in times like this, the person, in this case Pres Obama, is going to get hammered either way. Best thing for him to do is to rely on the incident commmander to know his job and allow things to work in the best possible manner to get all the answers without endangering the clean-up.

President Obama needs to hold Big Oil entirely accountable. This disaster could and should strike a huge blow to Big Oil. The scientists are right, President Obama should be doing everything within his power to expose the full scope of what Big Oil has done to the environment. What really pisses me off about this is the fact that BEFORE the mess is cleaned up and the leak stopped, everyone is playing the blame game. I don't blame the president for the mess, but I do wonder what else could have been done initially after the fire and leak. BP stated from the beginning that they would pay for the cleanup costs. Do we have any valid reason to believe they won't? If they balk on paying the costs, THEN let's haul them up in front of congress and the country and fine them.
