Last time I went to Mexico, my wife and I needed a Passport to enter the country. This is just as discriminatory and illegal then (according to the Mexican president). Also, we should be provided free health care and receive money while visiting.

How about you keep your people in your country Calderon? If people are visiting they are required to keep passports with them anyway so it shouldn't be a problem now should it? The only people that need to worry are ILLEGAL immigrants. We will happily welcome all legal immigrants.

Anybody on this thread know how long it takes to become a naturalized citizen the legal way? I'm genuinely curious.

I saw an article recently about a Cal State University student who was here from Bulgaria, on a student visa, played on the football team as a star kicker, and 12 years later eventually achieved his U.S. citizenship. Does it really take that long?

I know most of you folks posting on this thread are no fans of Obama's proposals to expedite this process, and mock it as an offer of blanket "amnesty" (which it isn't), but I'd really like to know, how long, on average, does it take for someone to complete the legal process of becoming a U.S. citizen? Anybody know?

What I came to say has already been said more than once. So I will say I am glad to see so much support for this law. Now we need to felonize and fine those who house and hire illegal aliens and our problem will cease to exist.

Mike- it took my ex-boyfriend and his family almost ten years to become naturalized citizens. They are from the Philippines originally and did everything the proper way. I think that amount of time is about average. It takes a ton of money and bureaucratic wrangling to become a citizen, which is probably why there are many naturalized citizens in strong support of this bill, or at least in support of seriously vamped up border patrol and the likes to stop the wave of illegal immigration where it starts.

He's welcome to take all his illegals with him when he leaves.

You are right -- obviously Calderon is incapable of 'fixing' his own country to the point that masses of people would like to stay. Instead, they are breaking laws of both countries to get away from what Mexico has to offer. Instead of complaining about discrimination, he would be wiser to focus on the border war between his own people and drug suppliers.

Yes, Calderon is correct, the law does discriminate. It discriminates against illegal activity, no matter what the color of your skin. The 12 year quote sounds about right. Case in point, one of my cousins just married a green card woman who has been going through the process for many years to become a citizen. She came to the US at 18 years old for religious assylum. Appearantly where she was from (Indonesia / Cambodia region of the world), converting to Christianity will seriously get a person killed.

She was accepted into the US as an 18 year old who knew no one here and didn't speak a word of English. Fast forward to today and she's in her early 30's. Somehow she managed to become completely fluent in English, go through college as an engineer, and is currently employed by the Limited clothing conglomerate to over see their shipping and product lines. To be honest, she is a living example of the old American dream for foreigners. Yet while she's always followed every step of paperwork and wants to genuinely become an American, the bureacracy of the US system has been still holding her in limbo.

Though it's always funny to hear genuine immigrants in the US talking about the illegal immigrant situation. Boy does it set them off. They've followed countless rules and have to fight their way through legal hell, but that doesn't stop them. Knowing that there are others who have such blatent disregard for the system really hacks them off. If enough illegal immigrants make the US mad about immigration in general, then even the legitimate immigrants can get caught in the cross fire. It's a very real fear for some of them.

It's not discrimination- it's enforcement of the law, which Calderon seems to be having a little trouble with in his own country. Probably why he's not familiar with the concept.

I was wondering what he'd do if 12,000,000 of us American citizens snuck across HIS border and started sucking up resources. Probably have a BIG change in tune....

That conclusion by U.S. intelligence adds to evidence that Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's Sinaloa cartel is winning Mexico's drug war.

The assessment was made based on information from confidential informants with direct ties to Mexican drug gangs and other intelligence, said a U.S. federal agent who sometimes works undercover, insisting on anonymity because of his role in ongoing drug investigations.

I work with engineers from other countries who have since become U.S. citizens. The longest time frame was 18 months and during that time the engineer had a work visa. Most likely anybody taking longer than that re-applied for a work visa rather than applying for citizenship.

How nice, it turns out that California has passed the same law as Arizona years ago. In 2007 San Fransisco was sued for not upholding their state law that coincidentally is the SAME as Arizona's.

1) Lock Down the Borders

2) Give Illegal Immigrants one year to sign up for Citizenship. You are issued a "Green Card" that must be on your body at all times (current law recquires this). Then begin the Naturalization Process. Anyone without a card after that One Year is immediately a felon.

3) Then implement Mexico's Naturalization and Immigration Laws.

SB 1070 is 100% based on US Federal Law Article 8, and 4th Amendment. It only give the Police arrest and hold suspects until they can be handed over safely to Federal Immigration Agent.

We were married November 2008, filed first set of paperwork February 2009, granted 2 yr temporary resident visa and entered the US September 2009. Our visa process went EXTREMELY fast, (Praise God Almighty), I know of others who have been waiting over 2 years and are still waiting. In July 2011 he will apply for his 10 year permanent visa and then in September 2012 he can apply for citizenship. He still will not have all the benefits of being a citizen until after he and I have completed a total combined 120 months of employment when my sponsorship of him ends. One has to register (need Green Card) be a permanent resident for 5 years, then go through the process, tests, background checks, and much more--it is a vigorous process before becoming a legalized natural citizen of the US. I listened to the speeches today. I was upset by our president stating (in reference to Calderone) that a Presidents' FIRST responsibility is to the safety of his citizens. JUST WHAT DOES OBAMA THINK IS HIS RESPONSIBILITY AS OUR PRESIDENT?

He went on to say in the next sentence that he has ordered the ATF, Customs and other federal law enforcement agencies to achieve 100% inspection of rail cars leaving the US of A bound for Mexico to stem the export of illegal weapons. Yet the containers at our ports and rail cars ENTERING our country are seeing less that 5% inspection looking for illegal weapons in-bound. Lets stop the Taliban from sneaking in some third world dirty bomb or stolen soviet nuc. and let Mexico inspect the rail cars entering their country. Let Calderone protect his citizens and re-direct our forces to protecting us!

In the years before I retired I traveled several times on business to Mexico, and not to the resort towns along the coasts, but to the inland towns north and south of Mexico City. Mexico is a difficult country. The rich are very rich, and most everyone else is dirt poor. The rich in both business and government tend to look down their noses at the "poor" classes of peasants and farmers. There was a lot of unrest among the poor particularly in the southern part of the country and demonstrations against the government. Calderon is currently pursuing a policy that has been in place for decades in Mexico. Let the poor leave the country and go to the US so they don't cause trouble for both the upper class and government in Mexico. Dumping the poor as illegal immigrants into the US is their safety valve, and they're scared @!$%#less that it might be closed, and they'll actually have to do something about the needs of their poor. I say to Mexico and its current president, GO TO HELL! Let's pull out of NAFTA, and require all the US companies that moved part of their operations to Mexico to get "cheap labor" to pull the jobs and production back into the US for US workers. Let's round up and deport every damn illegal immigrant and have Mexico pay the costs or have it assets in the US impounded! Let's lay down a mine field 1000 yards deep along the entire border and cover it with coils of barbed wire. Let's execute every damn Mexican drug runner we can get our hands on. I think it's great that Mexico's laws are so strict regarding citizenship and rights that unless you are born a Mexican you cannot even own property, but that the American govt. thinks it has a responsibility to pass out money and aid to illegals. The real sticking point of the AZ law is that it requires state law enforement to turn illegal aliens over to the Feds. At that point, the Feds either deport or just let them go. The whole reason for the AZ law is that the Feds are not doing their job of protecting the border in the first place.

The public broadly supports a new Arizona law aimed at dealing with illegal immigration and the law's provisions giving police increased powers to stop and detain people who are suspected of being in the country illegally.

Fully 73% say they approve of requiring people to produce documents verifying their legal status if police ask for them. Two-thirds (67%) approve of allowing police to detain anyone who cannot verify their legal status, while 62% approve of allowing police to question people they think may be in the country illegally.

The way to keep all these aliens out is top put a guard station every 25 miles of the 2000 mile border, just 80 stations with motion detection camaras and night camaras and give them 2 warning to turn around and go back and if after those 2 warning they keep coming arrest them and deport them and if they cause trouble shute them.

Think about these questions:

1) Has a wall of separation ever worked anywhere in the world? Great wall of China? Nope. Didn't keep the mongol hoard out. The wall in Berlin? Nope. It's now been torn down. Thank you, Reagan and Gorbachev for seeing the light. Present wall in West Bank, Israel? Nope. Not going to be an effective solution to solving the conflict. So why should we think a giant wall/fence/moat of any kind will solve this problem?

2) What if, instead of trying to do the impossible by rounding up and deporting 12 million illegals, what if we expedite the process by which they can attain legal citizenship? I'm absolutely NOT talking about blanket amnesty here. That was done back in the 80's with predictable results. But we could effectively speed up the process by which all immigrants can get legal status. Way up above I asked the question, how long does it take? Responses varied from 6 months to 10 years. All agreed that it was complicated and expensive.

3) If the root of the complaint is that illegals are sapping our economy, why not expedite the process of legalization (NOT AMNESTY!) so that they can then contribute income taxes just like all the rest of us?

4) What is there to be afraid of? Yes, I'm aware of the Mecha agenda and the Aztlan movement and all of that. That's a few radicals, not the mainstream attitude. Our great country has absorbed many waves of immigration, starting with the colonists and pilgrims (but that's a tangent), including the Chinese during the westward expansion and gold rush, the Irish during the potato famine, the Armenians during the Turkish genocide, the Hmong after Viet Nam, and we can absorb more without losing our essential identity as America, the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. These cultural groups add wonderful flavors to the melting pot or "salad bowl" which is America. We are strengthened as a result of their presence, not weakened.

5) If you disagree with #4, and would advocate deporting them all, how for would you take that? Would you send yourself back to Europe, or wherever your ancestors came from, and return America to it's original First Nation peoples? I doubt it.

6) How about dropping the fear based rhetoric? What are you afraid of anyway? America is great and strong and has been made stronger by the work and labor of immigrants, willing and sometimes unwilling, for 2 centuries. We will continue to be made stronger by all that is added to our great country so long as people do not sow the seeds of hatred, bigotry and prejudice.

In conclusion, as it says at the foot of Lady Liberty;

The Berlin Wall certainly did work. For 28 years less than 5,000 people successfully crossed the wall. Even if you extrapolate the length of the 2,000 mile long wall we would need compared to the 120 mile long Berlin Wall it would allow less than 100,000 people to cross. A far cry less than the 12 Million we have to deal with through a porous open border policy

If you believe in expediting the process to attain legal citizenship how do you prevent another 12 million people from immigrating here illegally over the years to keep abusing our laws?

This type of thinking is flawed and irrational. This is like setting up ant traps in your kitchen but not addressing how they're getting in your kitchen. If the Illegals continue to keep crossing into our country illegally and we just keep accepting them when do we decide we can no longer support them especially as our economy is still on the verge of a major collapse?

And as far as the Statue of Liberty inscription, nowhere does it say we will accept you if you come here illegally. My parents both immigrated here after the their countries were liberated but then taken over after Yalta. They proudly and honorably applied and were granted citizenship the LEGAL way. They both would be ashamed at what we are allowing our nation to become.

Thank you Arizona for pressing this issue because the last thing Obama wanted was this to break open before the November elections. I don't expect that he'll really push for any kind of reform until after the elections, because if he does, it will spell political suicide for a lot of democrats up for re-election.

70% of Americans are in favor of what Arizona did. Obama has stated the only way he could push another bill through is with a supermajority. Doesn't that tell you something? That he is not interested in representing the people in this country like he was elected to do.

I think most of these 29% were probably in favor of the Arizona law. I only say this because all other polls I've seen are somewhere in the mid to upper 70%'s in favor of Arizona.

The sonnet does not welcome ILLEGAL immigrants. It welcomes LEGAL immigrants to our shores. The US Constitution has clear laws regarding ILLEGAL and LEGAL immigration. Neither the sonnet nor our laws make mention of an immigrant's country of origin or ethnicity.

This current debate about AZ law has been ratcheted up to be a ridiculous Hispanic/Latino thing. There is no mention of ANY profiling in this law.

The only thing I'ld add, and which has been stated by others, is that the Arizona law is almost identical to that of both California law and the US federal law. The only message Arizona is sending is that it is fed up with a non-responsive federal government that totally fails to do their job, and that they choose to exercise their sovereign right to protect their borders themselves.

What we have here are a pair of socialists jerks whose real purpose is to completely gut any and all immigration laws for the purpose of granting amnesty for those illegal’s who are currently here and a open border policy for those sure to come in the future.

Anyone with half a brain who would care to compare the Arizona law to the federal statute would discover that they are virtually identical, the exception being that the Arizona law is actually more lenient than the federal statute in that it provides for more protections for the individual. The major difference is that while the feds will not enforce their own laws, Arizona will actually (hopefully) enforce this law.

This is a conspiracy of misinformation and intimidation by those who are the enemies of this country and I certainly count chairman Obama as one of them.

Calderon opposition to the AZ law is just politics, he has to express opposition, just as Bush and Obama has express support for immigration reform, but both parties know they do not mean their words, just populism in an issue they won´t put their hands on the fire. Other issues are far moreimportant. Calderon is a strong US ally, a right wing Presindent with a responsable administration, just look he handle the economic crisis (Mexicans banks were far more strong that ours), the flu outbreak, he hasn´t get the country in debt (like many Latin Americans or europeans), has manage decent levels of unemployment, he is fighting head on on the cartels, he definitely has shown true leadershipand wemust take that into acount.

Beckey, I didn´t say the flu got out of control, what I say is that his Administration handleit responsably and let the WHO coordinate with them the response, immediately and without anything to hide (like China with SARS) even though it represented huge tourism losses, he responded correctly, no doubt. Mexican banking system did well under the crisis, no Mexican bank went under, their credit levels were healthy and even that Mexico depends on the US economy,the banking system held well. Unemployment is one ofthe polwest in the world.What I am saying is thet Calderon has led a responsable Administration, he won´t solve Mexican problems, but he is in the right track, everything you expect from our side. As a retired State Police officer, when you are breaking ANY law, set forth by the state, are stopped, asked for proper ID and a record is checked on the computer in the patrol car. Doesn't matter what color your skin is, your age or your sex. Now what is it with people that think the are being discriminated against. A police officer in ANY state in America, has the right to pull anyone over that is acting suspiciously. That covers a lot of ground. Now think about it. An illegal gets a driver's license or maybe he or she doesn't. They have been driving in the United States, the state they are in, and come to a red light. They are unable to read the sign, NO TURN ON RED, but they do turn. What is the officer to do? Let them go? No, they will be pulled over and asked for their proper ID and informed of why they were pulled over. If they do not speak English, Here is the question to you. It's your call. What would you do? Now remember, before you answer. You are alone, you are approaching the vehicle, that has broken the law. You have no idea whether they are armed or not. You have the option to run the tag number on your laptop. Make the call, and I will tell you if you pass the test. By the way. This is done on almost every traffic stop, or should be.

Try again telling how responsible Calderon has made Mexico? You claim their unemployment is low? They are claiming 5.6% unemployment but their underemployment rate is around 25%. Also if you tossed the millions that are here sucking up jobs their unemployment rate would skyrocket. As for his banks not failing, part has to do with the amount of money illegals send home to Mexico from this country. The rest has nothing to do with what Calderon has done. Former President Zedillo made the changes to the Mexican Banking system to make sure they would be solvent. Also Mexico's state run oil company is making a mint because they sold oil futures at around $110 a barrel back when oil went sky high. Now since those prices have dropped significantly Mexico is seeing a huge windfall because of those futures trades. Again nothing to do with Calderon.

By the way all these Mexican illegals crying about our law in Arizona being discriminatory because they will be forced to show an ID; in Mexico a citizen of Mexico must show two forms of ID just to open a bank account so why are they complaining about having to show an ID to a police officer in our state if they are stopped for committing a crime?

Skipster---Well said! EVERY person who gets stopped by law enforcement officials in this country has to provide proper LEGAL identification, which is then verified by computer records. EVERY PERSON...no matter what color, race, ethnicity, religion, sex, or ANY other factor. skipster56 sound logical but let me tell you what happened to me a police officer pulled me over pulls his gun comes to my car demands i get out and i an now going to quote the officer "oh your not a Mexican well do you mind if i search your car" i allowed them and 15 min later was on my way. several years before my wife 19 at the time was pulled over not for breaking the law but because 2 men had robbed a liquor store about 1 mile away. the officer came to her door and again i quote "get out of your car and open the trunk . i am going to search your car" when she said no you cannot search she was detained for almost 3 hours the reason they pulled her over was the thieves were in a Pontiac color unknown, model unknown year unknown but she was driving a Pontiac. as long as the police behave this way people will not trust them

He has been under heavy pressure from the opposition and some part of the Mexican population to rise the debt levels and he has responsable held his ground, saying populist governments of the past have done so, fixing problems in the short term. he has kept the country debt at helthy levels, now take a look at Greece, people inside Mexico are starting to understand his stance. Yes, Zedillo lay the ground for the banking system to be responsable, but he hs make sure it staid that way and during the crisis Mexican banking system was cool. Im sure that his biggest concern is not the Arizona law but when he flies in and starts condemning us because we are tired of "his people" as well as the other illegals feeding off the entitlement wagon. Before he comes in blasting laws emplaced to protect our citizens he should keep his mouth shut until after he fixes his problems with his own immigration laws.

The one thing that kills me about illegals is that they think they are supposed to get free handouts because they were able to sucessfully invade our country. They think they have a right to do whatever they please whenever they please and Americans and American laws be damned. Fot yoo long these criminal elements have manipulated our laws so that they could get away with way too much. There are over 2,000 sex crimes committed by illegals in the U.S. every year. We need to prosecute the owners of companies that hire them. We also need to prosecute individuals that hire them. We need to secure our borders and enforce the laws that are already in place regarding illegals.

The bottom line is that the Federal Government has failed in its duty to protect the citizens here from foreign invaders and yes I would classify 12 million plus illegals as an invasion. One thing illegals need to remember is that we in Arizona do not have to have a permit to carry a concealed weapon and anybody can make a citizens arrest. If the Fed won't do it the American people, by god, will.

That has NOTHING to do with race, creed, color, even national origin, at that point. All persons arrested for an illegal act, from vandalism to murder, are required to provide documentation of who they are. Criminals use aliases. Some people are picked up who may look like the criminal but isn't. There are hosts of reasons for ID-ing any of us who would be arrested on reasonable suspicion.

It is so obvious if you think about it. And THAT naturally includes where we were born and all related to that, i.e., birth certificate, naturalization papers, applicable visa, green card,...... or nada! And that would include me, light-skinned and redheaded... if I broke the law.

(You know, of course, that a summary is only as good, or objective, as the summarizer).

I use Wikipedia a lot. Have you ever noticed the (edit) link on virtually every paragraph of a discourse of any subject there? That is because Wikipedia input is unsigned (for us) and the (edit) is an invitation to any who have conflicting evidence or sources to provide it. I've never understood why we don't just fight illegal immigration and the economic drain it causes by imposing stricter currency export controls: no ID/SSN then no transfer of dollars out of the country. Take away that incentive and while it won't stop the influx entirely, it might at least stem it or cause more spending of their dollars here.

As it stands right now, the Federal Govt's immigration enforcement resembles BP's ability to plug a leak.

So the solution then would be simple and resemble how most of the Banana Republics deal with currency export: collect taxes on the funds someone is trying to transfer out of the country. If you can prove to the local tax authority you already paid taxes, you get it refunded otherwise you finally are paying into the system. I am sure some would start shoving bills in envelopes (which would at least help out our USPS) but doubt that would become habit because of crime in the receiving location (too easy for a local to watch for fat envelopes).

Many here are urging the equivalent of "round 'em up and deport 'em all, and build a bigger fence to keep 'em from comin' back!" but if we could actually do that, then all those jobs would stand empty until the farmers and grape growers offered wages high enough to attract regular folks to those jobs ('cause they're not interested in doing them now!) and the price of any product produced by such more expensive labor would become commensurately more expensive to buy.

Iowa uses wind power for 20% of our electricity and we are building more wind turbines everyday. You make a good point about the green cards. That system does need to be strengthened and enforced properly.

Regarding tax dollars, if they're working "under the table" obviously they're not paying income tax, but they're still paying sales tax on everything they buy. This, as I understand it is one the main arguments for switching to a national VAT system.

To Mikeymike and anyone else who thinks they only pick grapes in the field. They are taking construction jobs, automotive service jobs and any job that requires labor. Anyone who thinks these people are making minimum wage has no idea what they earn. The ones in the automotive industry make as much as 1,000 dollars a week turning wrenches. But you hit on the main reason they will always be here. That's because Americans are willing to hire them to get something they couldn't afford normally. Alot of Americans don't care how they get it as long as they can keep up with the Joneses. The next time you hire someone to do anything ask them if they hire only legal workers.If they don't then don't hire them, or are you too afraid you won't be able to afford that bottle of wine. I keep hearing the argument of migrant field workers, doing work no one else will, but several of the illegals in my city lay brick or work construction and are paid 15-20 an hour here . i know the argument is that they do jobs that others won't but the simple fact is that they don't demand benefits -- that is why they are hired. So they don't pay taxes, the employer "assumes"( wink, wink) they are contract workers, and no one puts money in the kitty. I happen to know personally. They do not pay taxes, but some how they manage to keep their children in public schools, keep cars registered, and tagged and have rental homes. They use the medical facilities at Parkland here in Dallas, which is a tax paid hospital for the underprivileged, and is used mostly by what they classify as "undocumented" residents. Funny how they are not allowed to be called illegals or turned away for any reason. They manage to have cell phones, cable tv, and utilities. Who along this chain should be responsible for identifying them as illegal? Maybe just as Arizona says, it shouldn't get to this point.

In an answer yes. As far as your doom and gloom on the costs of foods, I would recommend that you sign up for Economics 101. Labor only accounts for approx 6% of the costs of goods. If a head of lettuce is $1.00 that means it costs the farmer .06 to have it picked. If he had to pay double the wage to have it picked the cost would only go up .06 more OR COST $1.06. Plus there is already exceptions for migrant workers that actually come to work the fields. Our immigration policy already allows for them to come and work. The problem is that most of those illegals that are here right now aren't doing that type of work. They are working construction, roads, manufacturing plants, meat packing plants, etc. To boot the illegals would not have any detremental impact on our economy and those that we allow in as refugees will gladly fill many of the jobs that illegals are now working. Look up the meat packing plant that was raided a couple of years ago in Iowa. All the illegals were rounded up and guess what Somali refugees were glad to pick up the slack. The difference, the Somalis were and are here legally and the Mexicans were not.

Mikey--I will GLADLY and PROUDLY pay a little extra for food or any other goods and services if I know that the companies that are producing that food are hiring LEGAL AMERCIAN citizens (10% unemployment anyone?) who will pay taxes, pay for health, auto, life, liability, worker's compensation insurances, pay for their health care, and will spend the money they make here in America instead of shipping it off to support the Mexican economy.

I have over 5 years of experience in the construction industry. Have you ever seen what happens when an ILLEGAL (and unskilled for that matter) laborer has a serious injury accident? THEY ALL LEAVE. They have no worker's compensation insurance. What happens to the guy who falls? He gets screwed, that's what. It is truly aweful to see, but they ditch the injured person, leave him at the jobsite, and rely on OUR GENEROSITY at the hospital to put this guy back together. Worker's compensation for that industry is 20-40% of gross income, depending on the exact job and the associated risks.

Tell me something Mikey. How is a legitimate LEGAL American business, which pays income taxes, payroll taxes, worker's compensation, licensing, bonding, and all other massive overhead costs...how is this business supposed to compete with a company that uses ILLEGAL labor that dodges the overhead costs (for the taxpayers to pick up the tab I might add)? I will tell you how...it is nearly impossible, and that is why they take over labor markets. It is not because Americans won't do the work, as the media says...that is a baldface LIE. LEGAL Americans don't do the work because LEGAL Americans would lose money going to work everyday if they tried to compete with the ILLEGAL labor prices and practices.
