Nope, we all full well know about who's protesting for whatever now days.. Why, there's even a group that is allowed to protest how they hope our troops will be killed and so on. They carry signs that represent hate, such as Thank God for IED's, and other slogans wishing death to our troops. This isn't in Iran or someplace, this is in the US. Yet freedom of speech allows it here. I do however think when it happens at a funeral for someone who has fallen for the rights of others, that is something that should not happen, and should be banned. i agree totally. Still one of the few things left in our constitution is freedom of speech. Freedom of speech does not mean we have to like or agree with what some people are free speeching about. I dont think in AC's case at the campus it would have been violent, just people who didn't like her. I dont have any other personal opinion, outside of, she seem's like an attention hog. The students had every right to tell her what they thought of her without being violent, and did so. I don't agree with Coulter all of the time, but she was the first person to expose John Edwards as a total fraud, and I think that she did a service to the nation at the time, so she can't be so bad. A similar incident occured recently at the UC-Irvine when leftist radicals, including many Muslims, prevented an Israeli diplomat from speaking. These incidents are only two examples of leftist tyranny on many campuses throughout North America. They only believe in freedom of speech when they agree with the speakers. Is this academic freedom? Some of you keep saying that there were threats. The story never specifically said that. I think the organizers were overwhelmed by the number of protestors and worried about Coulter's safety. Even if there were signs, no one actually did anything violent. There were no arrests. The students were expressing their displeasure with her presence.

I agree with the posters saying that you can't accept the protestors at Pelosi's speeches or even Obama's speeches and turn around and criticize these protestors at Coulter's speech. The signs against the president have been quite "threatening" but as far as I know, they didn't get arrested.

There is plenty of video of such protestors at the town halls who were followed, and investigated to find out they were not Tea Members but activists from unions or radical left wing activists provoking or planting incidents. I have found only one incident where a tea party used physical force - in California an anti-tea party activist bit off a tea party participant's finger. This is just one tiny step. It helps them to think and know the difference between right and wrong. Perhaps, if people would question and confront Ms. Coulter on where her basis of opinions originates, maybe it could change her way of thinking. (Doubtful, but it's a place to start.) It's just me, but I'm trying to do better.

Wow an intelligent voice of reason in the midst of an innane conversation. I believe as you do. The liberals have become so open minded that thier brains seem to have fallen out and the conservatives seem to say anything goes for thier leaders. Critical thinking is needed, but the censoring of anyone by a mob from either side should never be tolerated by either side. A mob and threats should never be justified by either side.

I scrolled thru all of this wondering if I were the only "aged" individual who would make an appeal to true Critical Thinking. We in our infancy of intellect hurl the same illogically conceived opinions from left or right. I have found her boorish self serving, but defend her right to speech and the right to not listen. In the case of the students, majority ruled.

zapper; I agree that free speech is necessary, but I also see that inflammatory and dishonest speech can be used in ways not intended by our Constitution. The art of propaganda was not defined when our Bill of Rights was written, and while dishonest speech has been around since the beginning of time, it was not yet the science it is today.

Ms Coulter (among others) use all the tactics of the propagandists, especially these inflammatory and dishonest ones that appeal to the baser instincts of the masses; she tells them what they want to hear and riles them up about it so they DON'T think of any untrue parts of her spiel. Slogans and anecdotes are an important part of this indoctrination, as is the appeal to "right" and "wrong". Once it is firmly emotionalized, it is difficult to dislodge because it has interrupted part of your normal thinking processes. When questioned or confronted, the speaker and the indoctrinated will automatically revert to these tried and true phrases, slogans and etc, and will either never answer your questions, or pull something unrelated out of the air in comparison. (Surely, you have see this here on the 'vine.) It is not true thinking; you will never get any real thought, or real answers, from them.

Imho, I think you are definately on the right track in explaining to your g-kids why this sort of talk is wrong, and why their feelings are important. However, it is also just as important for them to discover how their feelings work in these situations because it is often an appeal to their feelings that will change their minds in ways that are completely different than what is "right". Being able to "think critically" is the final step in this process. This seems complex, but once you identify it, it is easy to discern.

Google "Edward Bernays" for an introductory on how this permeates our country to its core. There is lots to read, and a nice BBC series you can watch. (Bernays was an American; Goebbels used his work almost exclusively to influence and rally the Brown Shirts that became the Nazi party and then to keep the German people enamoured, and it has been used on us since the Wilson Administration.) People like Coulter, Limbaugh and Beck will lose all their 'mystery'; you will see that they don't really have "opinions" as much as "platform".

It is so important to teach identification of this to the young in order to break the stranglehold that propaganda has on our country. Good luck to you.

We need to recall that some people gain credibility simply because they are on a podium. They are put in a position of power. It is up to the listener to decide if they deserve having that power. If their argument fails, then they have failed. If they succeed, that's another thing. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

Yes, weak minded people can be influenced, but what makes a weak mind? Those who do not exercise it. Those who fail to question. Those who are afraid. Those who don't care. Ignorance, Apathy, Fear: These are unpleasant qualities we must work to overcome. Running away from those who spew controversy does not make us stronger or wiser. Confronting these weaknesses builds our strength.

Propaganda has been around for a long time. To recognize it, for what it is, takes discernment. That's why we must teach our children, grandchildren, students, etc., the qualities that separate propaganda from reality. (And yes, my g'kids are allowed to express their own opinions, too.) Again, critical thinking is part of the mix. We are failing to encourage this in our youth. Ann Coulter is a master at finding the weaknesses and exploiting them. She would be good to observe and dissect to determine how that kind of mind works. College students "should" be of the age and quality that they won't fall for what is spewed. They "should" be able to figure out the persuasion factors and how they are applied. Instead of reacting to a diatribe of any speaker, analyzing the intended goal and the path can be helpful in articulating a concise rebuttal.

It takes practice to note the flaws of the presenter and to pull down the negative presentation. The only way to gain that ability is through challenging ourselves and thought processes. This builds our character and provides better foundations to build upon. Ann Coulter is a house of cards. We just need to figure out what will shake her enough to collapse her. She might be a "nut," but she shouldn't be that tough to crack.

They didn't tell her not to go on. Their were thousands out their saying you are a bigot and we don't want to hear it. She just didn't like it. The woman doesn't like much and I wouldn't want to be associated either with her bigotry and hate mongering just for the sake of "free speech". The kids stood firm and said we don't want your kind of "thoughts" spouted here because they are hurtful and useless hate mongering and we are not about that.

I love the principles the founding fathers established this country with. They were geniuses and because of what they did we have enjoyed life at it's best to this point in human history. I also have read much of Karl Marx's work and find it fascinating, truthful, and brilliant in many ways. However, communism would never work and always seems to end up in the detriment of the people (that's an understatement), however it seems that capitalism is headed in the same direction. We, like our founding fathers, need to forge ahead in continue to refine the democracy and country they have established in a civil and thoughtful manner. We need to not continue to be dividing into these pseudo camps of democrat and republican. The media (both left "msnbc" and right "fox" wing branches of it) have completely failed in bringing us any sort of factual information. It is all angled and twisted in a way to make it appealing to their target audience. So much so that all factual information is lost in the goal to present an ideology while being as bombastic and attention grabbing as possible. It's sad but I hope one day soon we are able to get some shred of honest and non biased information to the entire country.
