I am so happy with the results of this poll! For all you atheist, if you don't like it, use a debit card!!!! Our country, when it was founded, was based on God. Our freedom to believe or not believe is fought for everyday. We, as Christians, don't tell you to believe or take away something that you love so why can't you keep your mouths shut and believe the way you want to believe and not try to change history and the way the country has been ran for many years. There was 1 girl who was an atheist out of a class of 50 and because of that one girl, they were not able to pray at their graduation. That to me is ridiculous. Does this really need any remarks added? Yes. Every time I look at the TV, there is somebody talking about how great God is. Everytime they say something they feel strongly about, it's followed by, "Can I get an Amen?" or just a simple, "Amen?". What is that? Bad English? "A" is singular. "Men" is plural". The whole design of the universe demands a designer!
The Bible contains timeless wisdom about this designer and also the people who decided to believe in Him. He doesn't force anyone to believe in Him, but from my own experiences of not believing--and then believing I can tell you that life goes a lot better when you know there is a purpose behind it.

The "history" argument as a reason to leave it on the currency is a BS argument. A longer period of time since the creation of the US passed without it on there than has passed since it was included. If you're really concerned about preserving the historical accuracy of our nation's currency, you'd be in favor of its removal.

It's interesting to me that an atheist is considered someone who goes through life without having to answer to someone when Christians hold the very convenient belief that all they have to do is pray to a god to have their sins forgiven. I believe we are responsible to each other for our sins, not a god.
I do not believe in a supreme being. I have very dear friends who do, though, and just as I'm sure they pray for me I also wish for their every happiness. This seems to work very well. It's called the Golden Rule and even though it supposedly came from the Bible it is really a product of human common sense and works in every situation.
I would llike the phrase "in God we trust" to be removed from the oath because it does not reflect the inclusion of all Americans beliefs, therefore does not promote true "liberty and justice for all."

I think it should be taken away because how can we claim we are a country of religious tolerance when we keep holding on to christian rhetoric. We claim relgious freedom while calling ourselves a christian nation and put great importance on christian values. As far as I can see we are the latter. We accept those who believe in christ and shun those that do not. Often times we are violent or prejudice those who don't believe in our values. But facts are hard to find, given the example of the last election on how much importance we put on whether Obama was a muslim or a christian. Yet, we still want to hold on to the fact we have "religious freedom". B) Separation of Church and State is meant to keep religious bias out of state business, not to remove religion from America and it's populace.

I've poked around a bit, but I can't seem to find the poll results as they stand today. No matter, I addressed the specific numbers about a year ago. I think the results bear repeating:
The MSNBC Poll began on November of 2005.
On September 9, 2006, with 27,862 responses, the numbers reflected 20% favoring the removal, while 80% wanted the phrase retained (reported by snopes.com).
On August 19, 2008, a Newsvine respondant, "daffyduck," in comment number 1.69 of this original thread here, reported that after 4,394,360 responses, the poll reflected 33% favored the removal, while 67% opposed it. Coincidentally, this was around the time that many of the Email, Facebook, and mySpace campaigns had begun. It might also be noted that at least two respondants to this thread (who favored retaining the phrase) have admitted to voting multiple times.
By August 24, 2008 (again, from snopes.com) it was reported the poll reflected 22%/88% with 7,054,407 respondents.
Even allowing for a wide margin of error, that is over a 4000% (yes, four thousand percent) increase in the number of people voting within the month of August of 2008.
Further, it can be reasonably deduced that from 2006 to 2008, people were voting at a rate of approximately 180,000 per month on average. From August of 2008 to November of 2009, the average is more like 780,000 per month.

In God We Trust does have historical and patriotic significance and that should be enough to keep it on our money! But if it's not than what happened to the America that has always practiced tolerance and freedom, and honoring tradition. It seems to me America is being flooded by people who don't believe in what this country was founded on and to them I say go back where you came from then. For atheists, again what happened to tolerance. "God" can mean whatever you want it to mean. You are wrong, Congress has it's own form of retirement and health care which they don't pay into, not Social Security or Medicare, which is also very different from anything we peons will ever benefit from. They also recieve their salary or a percentage of it for the rest of their lives. Do any of the rest of us get that?? The original idea of representatives of the people in Congress was that they would only recieve a smal stipend for expenses, and maintain a "real job" back home, so they would truly be "representatives of the people"! We should go back to that form of government, limit terms so there is not a "I own this position" mentality.

We have drastically changed as a nation since 1 woman got prayer taken out of the schools, now our children are killing each other in those same schools which were supposed to be a safe place. I've got news for you. I'm a Christian, and I don't need "in God we trust" on our currency to remind me of my beliefs. We were getting along just fine before it was added. You trust in God? So do I, but I don't need it on my currency or in my pledge of allegiance.

Thanks Loony, I'm not an atheist, but I can read too. Some of us spiritually inclined, (non-denominational christian here) retain the ability to read. Don't judge us all by the foolish, though to be honest, the most outspoken of your group really irritate the hell out of me too. So I haven't given up the mystery of it all, and said "It's nothing but a bunch of rocks floating about in space".

The currency of this country has had "In God We Trust" on it as long as I have been alive. Athiest and Christians alike have used it to buy food, Cars, recreation. It has been used to pay bills by all. I have not heard of one death or hopitalization due to anyone being offended by spending this money with "In God We Trust" on it. When people move to a new country, they certainly are aware of the culture. The United States is predominately Christian. If these people do not want to live around Christians and touch money that has "In God We Trust" on it, why don't they go to a country where the currency is acceptable ?? There are many airports in this country and all of these haters could get on a plane and leave, trust me they would not be missed. If I moved to one of these countries would they care if I were offended by their religion ??? Would I have the option of pressing one for English ? Or would I be expected to live by the laws of the land that I adopted ??? Would I be expected to learn the language ??? I for one think that these haters should love America or get out.

What Christians are objecting to is a tiny minority of Atheists trying to get rid of all mention of God and Christ which the majority of Americans have always believed in.
Communist countries for many years did not tolerate religious belief--or anyone who did not believe in the State as a substitute for God. Muslim countries persecute anyone who is not Muslim. If a FEW misguided Christians make you feel uncomfortable, think what radical Muslims would do to you in their countries because you don't agree with them. Ditto for Hindus in India and other counries.
In this country you still have complete freedom to not believe, and few will give you any hassel about it. Most of us know better than to argue with an Atheist. If they are declaring it, they are loaded for bear and they will not listen to anything you say.

The "principle" of "separation of Church and State" exists nowhere in any of our Foundational documents. The Bill of Rights, on the other hand, states that we are to "PROTECT AND DEFEND" religion. The bogus claim that the standard we use to discriminate against all who believe in this "free" land of ours is some hallowed declaration by our Founding Fathers is just a bold-faced, usually unchallenged, and, obviously not researched LIE. If anything, what our Founding Fathers were trying to defend against was the establishment of a State religion - NOT the freedom to live one's Faith openly and without fear of reprisal. If our history books still teach the truth, is that not why our country was settled in the first place by so many - to find a land where they could be free to practice what they believed without being deemed "criminals" and subject to punishment?
Americans, let us read and know the truth of our history before continuing some noxious, spurious claim to "separation of Church and State" as being an "American creed" of the "free" and the "brave."

Yet it was put into the U.S. Constitution to prevent the new republic from establishing a STATE religion, like the Anglican church, not stamp out all public references to God. John Locke and Thomas Jefferson came up with this concept, and it was woven into the Constitution and Bill of Rights to prevent government abuse in the name of God or church (many people emigrated to the U.S. to escape religious persecution). Yet many liberal talking heads on the cable news outlets claim that it means we are to remove all references to God from public discourse (prayer) and erase all mention of God or Judeo-Christian values from public buildings (courtrooms). But that is their opinion, not fact!
PS: Given the fact that the majority of our founding fathers were Christian, why would they write a bill that bans people of faith from serving in government?! The point behind the "separation of church and state" idea was to keep government out of the church, not the church (people) out of the government. The framers of the Constitution wanted to prevent another church of England.
Let us raise up many prayers for the leaders of our beloved country today on Presidents' Day.
Why not pick up the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence and read what they say regarding the freedom to practice one's religion without censure? I've never really been able to understand why anyone would oppose a statement like "In God we Trust". If it has no merit why oppose it?! Even if there is no merit to it whatsoever, it has more potential for good than to say we trust those who oppose it. First and foremost they simply are ignorant of how the US came into existence, or, they're simply quite unconscious. We certainly can't trust anything, I mean ANYTHING, someone like that is likly to do.

After reading these posts, I can better understand agressions shown towards Christians. I am 25 years old and have considered myself a Christian my entire life, thanks to my father and wonderful grandmother. And although I am not currently where I feel I should be in God's eyes, my heart aches as I read the hatred and judgement in some of your words. In regards to the subject at hand, this poll sucks anyways. (Guess I'm showing my age there, huh?) Even before I answered, I still felt as though I was denying God. The option reads, "No, The motto has historical and patriotic significance and does nothing to establish a state religion." Why is that my only option? Why can't I proclaim, "No, I feel our country was founded on a firm belief in a higher power that has watched over and protected our once great nation, and I want to recognize that every opportunity I have, even on my currency." I'm starting to feel a little like Peter (matthew 26:70-75); how many times will I deny my faith before the rooster crows?
The fact that anyone would object to "In God We Trust" on the currency is silly. I'm sick of the minority in this country always getting press and getting their butts kissed. I have faith in a loving and forgiving God. What better attributes can a nation have? Putting it on the national currency reminds everybody of that fact. It doesn't force anyone to believe anything. "In God We Trust" is not a violation of the first amendment to the constitution for the united States of America. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" - so reads the amendment.
Congress did not make an establishment of religion. No state church was created by virtue of the "motto" appearing on "currency." The phrase: "separation of church and state" does not appear in the constitution nor do the terms: "God" or "Jesus Christ."
"God" is not a principal of any one particular religion. Sure many religions claim him. But he is a the patron of many different franchises. Again, no particular religion or version of "God" has been selected by the "motto." Even if the motto read: "In Jesus Christ Our Lord & Savior We Trust" there would be no constitutional problem. Which further highlights the fatal flaws in the constitution.
Why? Because "Jesus Christ" isn't the head of any one particular religion. Sure the umbrella may be Christianity, but there are many claims to be the true form. Many different branches and factions or denominations. All of which sometimes do claim to be a religion onto themselves. Granted the term "God" is far less exclusionary than using the term "Christ."
Should the "motto" be removed? Yes. Because while not explicitly unconstitutional it is explicitly wrong: Why is it wrong? Because:
1.) Not everyone believes in "God"
2.) Some consider even spelling out his name to be a form of idolatry
3.) Who exactly is the "We" in "In God We Trust"? - Very presumptuous statement to make.
4.) The constitution is a flawed document which doesn't go far enough in protecting liberty. Nobody living has signed the document. Therefore, it is not legally binding but is enforced at the barrel of a gun.
Think the constitution is legally binding? Talk with a member of the House of Representatives or Senate. Look at the myriad of unconstitutional or extra-constitutional programs: socialist insecurity, mediscare, etc.
Ladies & Gentleman, it is a totally dead document. Not respected. An interesting historical piece of parchment. Occasionally referenced by jurists.
With all of that being said. There is no reason to have the "motto" on the "currency." The government shouldn't even be in the business of producing money.

This is not an issue of Theists versus Atheists. Fundamentalists do not seem to understand that this nation was founded on the principle of separation of church and state. Americans have evolved our understanding of "equal rights" to include women and blacks (and soon, gays, we hope). As we reflect and understand what "separation of church and state" means, we will understand why the government needs to no longer promote Christian or any other religious points of view, including belief in God. Am curious and surprised about Reverend Long's neutral stand invoking conveniently a quote from Christ about a Roman coin, "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God". History tells us that ancient Rome, including Ceasar's time practiced paganism by worshiping and praying to different "gods and dieties" depending on their needs. As such, one would surmise that the word "God" or any phrase refering to "God" was nowhere inscribed on that roman coin, as it is on ours today. Does this really need any remarks added? Yes. Every time I look at the TV, there is somebody talking about how great God is. Everytime they say something they feel strongly about, it's followed by, "Can I get an Amen?" or just a simple, "Amen?". What is that? Bad English? "A" is singular. "Men" is plural". Shouldn't it actually be "Some men"? I already know what you will say. "It's not a laughing matter. That is something that I hold sacred to me". Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but as an athiest, I am able to joke around with my beliefs. Can you?

The Bible contains timeless wisdom about this designer and also the people who decided to believe in Him. The "history" argument as a reason to leave it on the currency is a BS argument. A longer period of time since the creation of the US passed without it on there than has passed since it was included. If you're really concerned about preserving the historical accuracy of our nation's currency, you'd be in favor of its removal.

It's interesting to me that an atheist is considered someone who goes through life without having to answer to someone when Christians hold the very convenient belief that all they have to do is pray to a god to have their sins forgiven. I believe we are responsible to each other for our sins, not a god.
I do not believe in a supreme being. I have very dear friends who do, though, and just as I'm sure they pray for me I also wish for their every happiness. This seems to work very well. It's called the Golden Rule and even though it supposedly came from the Bible it is really a product of human common sense and works in every situation.

It is extremely hard for a Christian believer to process this data, but nonetheless it is true. All of the "sacred rituals" of Christianity, and all of Christianity's core beliefs (virgin birth, resurrection, etc.) come straight from pagan religions that were popular around the time of Jesus.

In God We Trust does have historical and patriotic significance and that should be enough to keep it on our money! But if it's not than what happened to the America that has always practiced tolerance and freedom, and honoring tradition. It seems to me America is being flooded by people who don't believe in what this country was founded on and to them I say go back where you came from then. For atheists, again what happened to tolerance. "God" can mean whatever you want it to mean. It can simply signify that we acknowledge that we don't always have control over everything and why not allow ourselves to take comfort in embracing "faith" in that faith can be interpreted as anything you want it to mean or as there could be a higher power that knows more than we do. I don't go to church regularly but I do pray and take comfort in "faith." Trust in them, in our past and all the great things we have accomplished as a nation, and stopping trying to break tradition and mess with something that ain't broke. Besides the troubles of the world seem to suggest to me that having a little faith might be just what we need. I'm the mother of two boys - strong boys who believe in their country, protecting the environment and who want to go into public service (as a future fireman and a policeman). And they embrace their country, fellow citizens and hopefully I'm trying to teach them why not trust in God or a higher power to help guide them during difficult times. The face of the world is changing and I'm not sure it is changing for the better. You are wrong, Congress has it's own form of retirement and health care which they don't pay into, not Social Security or Medicare, which is also very different from anything we peons will ever benefit from. They also recieve their salary or a percentage of it for the rest of their lives. Do any of the rest of us get that?? The original idea of representatives of the people in Congress was that they would only recieve a smal stipend for expenses, and maintain a "real job" back home, so they would truly be "representatives of the people"! We should go back to that form of government, limit terms so there is not a "I own this position" mentality.

Perhaps you should research what you complain about. Since 98% or Iranians are Muslim, and 97% of Iraqis are Muslim, let me teach you a little about it. But just to set the record straight, I am an Athiest. But as such, I am actually able to study all religions with an open mind, unlike most Christians that I know.
The religion of Islam was begun early in the 7th century A.D. by a man named Muhammad. He claimed to have been visited by the angel Gabriel. During these angelic visitations, which continued for about 23 years until Muhammad's death, the angel purportedly revealed to Muhammad the words of God (called "Allah" in Arabic and by Muslims). These dictated revelations comprise the Qur'an, Islam's holy book. Islam teaches that the Qur'an is the final authority and the last revelation of Allah.
Muslims, the followers of Islam, believe the Qur'an to be the preexistent and perfect word of Allah. Further, many Muslims reject all other language versions of the Qur'an. A translation is not a valid version of the Qur'an, which only exists in Arabic. Although the Qur'an is the main holy book, the Sunnah is considered the second source of religious instruction. The Sunnah was written by Muhammad's companions about what Muhammad said, did, and approved.
The key beliefs of Islam are that Allah is the only true God and that Muhammad was Allah's prophet. By simply stating these beliefs, a person can convert to Islam. The word "Muslim" means "one who submits to Allah." Islam purports to be the one true religion from which all other religions are derived (including Judaism and Christianity).
Muslims base their lives on the five pillars:
1. The testimony of faith: "There is no true god but God (Allah), and Muhammad is the Messenger (Prophet) of God."
2. Prayer: five prayers must be performed every day.
3. Giving: one must give to the needy, as all comes from Allah.
4. Fasting: besides occasional fasting, all Muslims must fast during the celebration of Ramadan (the ninth month of the Islamic calendar).
5. Hajj: the pilgrimage to Mecca (Makkah) should be performed at least once in a lifetime (during the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar).
These five tenets, the framework of obedience for Muslims, are taken seriously and literally. A Muslim's entrance into paradise hinges on obedience to these five pillars.
In relation to Christianity, Islam has several similarities and significant differences. Like Christianity, Islam is monotheistic, but in opposition to Christianity, Islam rejects the concept of the Trinity. Islam accepts certain portions of the Bible, such as the Law and the Gospels, but rejects the majority of it as slanderous and uninspired.
Islam claims that Jesus was a mere prophet, not God's Son (only Allah is God, Muslims believe, and how could He have a Son?). Rather, Islam asserts that Jesus, though born of a virgin, was created just as Adam, from the dust of the earth. Muslims believe Jesus did not die on the cross; thus, they deny one of the central teachings of Christianity.

Although there is debate on whether Thomas Jefferson was a Christian, he did read the Bible often and had a belief in and a respect for God--therefore was NOT an Atheist. Maybe you had better read more of what he wrote before you jump to that conclusion! He was very much against a STATE religion as am I, but he did not count a general belief in God as anything anywhere near a State controlled religion.
How is rallying support for what you believe in lying? Where did this logic come from? It's funny how if a group of liberals believes in something it is okay to convey that belief by any means but if GOD forbid a group of conservatives does the same thing they are wrong. Thanks Loony, I'm not an atheist, but I can read too. Some of us spiritually inclined, (non-denominational christian here) retain the ability to read. Don't judge us all by the foolish, though to be honest, the most outspoken of your group really irritate the hell out of me too. So I haven't given up the mystery of it all, and said "It's nothing but a bunch of rocks floating about in space".
Still, can you get some of them to stop revising history? Jefferson was a deist. Like Emannuel Kant, and a number of French thinkers at the time. And don't go saying that "they were afraid of persecution from the government at the time". I'm sick of hearing that.

Back too the original post though: The results might be a little skewed towards those with faith, but they match up actually quite well with the atheist/agnostic - religious/deist divide in this country.

The currency of this country has had "In God We Trust" on it as long as I have been alive. Athiest and Christians alike have used it to buy food, Cars, recreation. It has been used to pay bills by all. I have not heard of one death or hopitalization due to anyone being offended by spending this money with "In God We Trust" on it. When people move to a new country, they certainly are aware of the culture. The United States is predominately Christian. If these people do not want to live around Christians and touch money that has "In God We Trust" on it, why don't they go to a country where the currency is acceptable ?? There are many airports in this country and all of these haters could get on a plane and leave, trust me they would not be missed. If I moved to one of these countries would they care if I were offended by their religion ??? Would I have the option of pressing one for English ? Or would I be expected to live by the laws of the land that I adopted ??? Would I be expected to learn the language ??? I for one think that these haters should love America or get out.

In one breath you mention (rightly so) how this country is founded on freedom to choose your own way of life, then in the very next breath you state that anyone who doesn't excercise that freedom in the same way you do should leave?
I agree, Dennis that people shouldn't be saying, "if you don't like it, leave." Although if they did decide to live in another country they would soon be very dissatisfied with the lack of freedom in most countries that we all (believer and Atheist alike) take for granted here.
"In God We Trust" has been on our money for a long time now and no one thought anything about it until recently. People who don't believe in God can use it to purchase things just as easily as believers can. What Christians are objecting to is a tiny minority of Atheists trying to get rid of all mention of God and Christ which the majority of Americans have always believed in.
Communist countries for many years did not tolerate religious belief--or anyone who did not believe in the State as a substitute for God. Muslim countries persecute anyone who is not Muslim. If a FEW misguided Christians make you feel uncomfortable, think what radical Muslims would do to you in their countries because you don't agree with them. Ditto for Hindus in India and other counries.
In this country you still have complete freedom to not believe, and few will give you any hassel about it. Most of us know better than to argue with an Atheist. If they are declaring it, they are loaded for bear and they will not listen to anything you say.
Most Christians won't listen to you either. At least not if they read and study the Bible often.
But the flip side of that is that no one thought much of it before it was on there, either. Is someone's personal faith hampered by it not being on the money they spend? Couldn't believers also spend the money just as well without it on there, as you make the argument that non-believers can now?

In God we trust should always be on are minds and in are hearts and anything we can get it on. thats whats wrong with this world today we forget about the Lord and just do as we please. In the Bible it talks about Sodom and Gomorrah being destoryed for all the evil they did in there time. The "principle" of "separation of Church and State" exists nowhere in any of our Foundational documents. The Bill of Rights, on the other hand, states that we are to "PROTECT AND DEFEND" religion. The bogus claim that the standard we use to discriminate against all who believe in this "free" land of ours is some hallowed declaration by our Founding Fathers is just a bold-faced, usually unchallenged, and, obviously not researched LIE. If anything, what our Founding Fathers were trying to defend against was the establishment of a State religion - NOT the freedom to live one's Faith openly and without fear of reprisal. If our history books still teach the truth, is that not why our country was settled in the first place by so many - to find a land where they could be free to practice what they believed without being deemed "criminals" and subject to punishment?
Americans, let us read and know the truth of our history before continuing some noxious, spurious claim to "separation of Church and State" as being an "American creed" of the "free" and the "brave."
The biggest myth in the U.S. today is that "separationof church and state" implies that people of faith are to stay out of government affairs. Yet it was put into the U.S. Constitution to prevent the new republic from establishing a STATE religion, like the Anglican church, not stamp out all public references to God. John Locke and Thomas Jefferson came up with this concept, and it was woven into the Constitution and Bill of Rights to prevent government abuse in the name of God or church (many people emigrated to the U.S. to escape religious persecution). Yet many liberal talking heads on the cable news outlets claim that it means we are to remove all references to God from public discourse (prayer) and erase all mention of God or Judeo-Christian values from public buildings (courtrooms). But that is their opinion, not fact!

PS: Given the fact that the majority of our founding fathers were Christian, why would they write a bill that bans people of faith from serving in government?! The point behind the "separation of church and state" idea was to keep government out of the church, not the church (people) out of the government. The framers of the Constitution wanted to prevent another church of England.

Why not pick up the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence and read what they say regarding the freedom to practice one's religion without censure? That way, we can have a plebiscite duly educated in our history. Education - the sine qua non of John Adams, for, as he said, a democracy will work ONLY with an educated constituency. I've never really been able to understand why anyone would oppose a statement like "In God we Trust". If it has no merit why oppose it?! Even if there is no merit to it whatsoever, it has more potential for good than to say we trust those who oppose it. First and foremost they simply are ignorant of how the US came into existence, or, they're simply quite unconscious. We certainly can't trust anything, I mean ANYTHING, someone like that is likly to do.
I'm an atheist and I don't oppose it. I don't care either way. Personally, I find it a bit ironic that christians want it on their money, but to each his own.
I don't support this dude's lawsuit either as it is a waste of time and tax payer money. If you don't like it in the pledge, don't say 'under god' when it gets to that part. Problem solved.
Oh, and for some additional fun on this thread, how do all of you conservatives who have been screaming about Obama being a socialist feel about the fact that the pledge was written by a socialist? He didn't add 'under god', obviously, but he wrote the original version. Yes, he was christian, but also a socialist. Kinda funny and ironic, imo...
Because as you may not care about the statement in god we trust ... often when you dig a little deeper you will find that when it comes to something like this it isn't about god at all, in fact it has nothing to do with god.

After reading these posts, I can better understand agressions shown towards Christians. I am 25 years old and have considered myself a Christian my entire life, thanks to my father and wonderful grandmother. And although I am not currently where I feel I should be in God's eyes, my heart aches as I read the hatred and judgement in some of your words. On behalf of all the Christians who still have their wits about them, I apologize to anyone those words were meant for.
In regards to the subject at hand, this poll sucks anyways. (Guess I'm showing my age there, huh?) Even before I answered, I still felt as though I was denying God. The option reads, "No, The motto has historical and patriotic significance and does nothing to establish a state religion." Why is that my only option? Why can't I proclaim, "No, I feel our country was founded on a firm belief in a higher power that has watched over and protected our once great nation, and I want to recognize that every opportunity I have, even on my currency." I'm starting to feel a little like Peter (matthew 26:70-75); how many times will I deny my faith before the rooster crows?
The fact that anyone would object to "In God We Trust" on the currency is silly. I'm sick of the minority in this country always getting press and getting their butts kissed. I have faith in a loving and forgiving God. What better attributes can a nation have? Putting it on the national currency reminds everybody of that fact. It doesn't force anyone to believe anything. The separation of church and state is to keep the government from imposing it's own religion on everyone and allow us to believe as we wish, as was stated before. That was the intention of the FF and they got it right. I've also noticed that it's always the atheists who fly off the handle when religion is brought up. It seems that they believe as I do in their subconcious that it will really suck to be them when their time comes.

This is the stupidest comment I have read yet.
"In God We Trust" is not a violation of the first amendment to the constitution for the united States of America. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" - so reads the amendment.
Congress did not make an establishment of religion. No state church was created by virtue of the "motto" appearing on "currency." The phrase: "separation of church and state" does not appear in the constitution nor do the terms: "God" or "Jesus Christ."
"God" is not a principal of any one particular religion. Sure many religions claim him. But he is a the patron of many different franchises. Again, no particular religion or version of "God" has been selected by the "motto." Even if the motto read: "In Jesus Christ Our Lord & Savior We Trust" there would be no constitutional problem. Which further highlights the fatal flaws in the constitution.
Why? Because "Jesus Christ" isn't the head of any one particular religion. Sure the umbrella may be Christianity, but there are many claims to be the true form. Many different branches and factions or denominations. All of which sometimes do claim to be a religion onto themselves. Granted the term "God" is far less exclusionary than using the term "Christ."
Should the "motto" be removed? Yes. Because while not explicitly unconstitutional it is explicitly wrong: Why is it wrong? Because:
1.) Not everyone believes in "God"
2.) Some consider even spelling out his name to be a form of idolatry
3.) Who exactly is the "We" in "In God We Trust"? - Very presumptuous statement to make.
4.) The constitution is a flawed document which doesn't go far enough in protecting liberty. Nobody living has signed the document. Therefore, it is not legally binding but is enforced at the barrel of a gun.
Think the constitution is legally binding? Talk with a member of the House of Representatives or Senate. Look at the myriad of unconstitutional or extra-constitutional programs: socialist insecurity, mediscare, etc.

With all of that being said. There is no reason to have the "motto" on the "currency." The government shouldn't even be in the business of producing money.

Seperation of Church and state does not mean seperation of God and state. It means our government won't be based around a single religion. It doesn't mean our government is to be godless.Â
This is not an issue of Theists versus Atheists. Fundamentalists do not seem to understand that this nation was founded on the principle of separation of church and state. Americans have evolved our understanding of "equal rights" to include women and blacks (and soon, gays, we hope). As we reflect and understand what "separation of church and state" means, we will understand why the government needs to no longer promote Christian or any other religious points of view, including belief in God. Of course, "God" can be defined in many ways. not just a "heavenly father" whom narrow-minded believers can only accept.

Personally - I don't bloody care what it says on U. S. Currency. The Government prints it, the Government can have what it wants on it. As Christ said, "“Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s”. Let the Government print dirty limericks on the money, if it makes it happy. The money isn't in my pocket to read (though, the dirty limerick or two may catch the fancy).
"In God We Trust" was added to everything during the age of McCarthyism, when everybody was on the hunt for them evil Commies. They thought that Commies couldn't say it or stand to have it on their money or in their Pledge, so that they'd flee the country like vampires fleeing the morning sun. Those who insist on taking the phrase out are just part of the 14% minority and what they think does not really matter in a world of democracy where the majority (of 86%) rules. The minority just have to suck it up. As materialistic and earthly their wisdom is, what they really care for, within them, is the value of the note. They need attention. Am curious and surprised about Reverend Long's neutral stand invoking conveniently a quote from Christ about a Roman coin, "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God". History tells us that ancient Rome, including Ceasar's time practiced paganism by worshiping and praying to different "gods and dieties" depending on their needs. As such, one would surmise that the word "God" or any phrase refering to "God" was nowhere inscribed on that roman coin, as it is on ours today. Would Jesus have answered differently given our present situation? Surely, you would love to quote Him again - conveniently - but in absence of it, where do you stand now? You would probably revert back suggesting to "Let the government print dirty limericks on the money, if it makes them happy . . or . . catch they fancy". The phrase in question here is "In God we Trust" or "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. Do you really think that such phrase is "dirty limericks"?
