It certainly should be a humanitarian policy not to send someone into disaster....but once the disaster is resolved, then it should be back to business and rule of law. While "conservatives" may get all up in arms about this action, holding fast to the Constitution they claim to know and love, there is a little thing called the Fourteenth Amendment (part of our Constitution, contained in the Bill of Rights; if you don't like it, use one of the other powers granted to you by that document, your freedom to speak and petition your government for change... that's how a democracy works).
The amendment states, in relevant part: "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States;..." we can dispense with that fairly easily: illegal immigrants are not citizens of the United States, so that clause doesn't apply... it is the very next two clauses that are of particular importance here: "Nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any personwithin it's jurisdiction [anyone here, no matter how] equal protection of the laws."
Just as no state could force any citizen off of a busy street, and back into his burning house (even if he was holding up traffic, and making everyone's life temporarily inconvenient), We the People have specifically denied the government the power to round up the Haitians within our jursdiction (which at the very least means within our borders) and send them back to Haiti for 18 months, or until conditions down there get back to the level of squalor the Haitians previously enjoyed. In reality, this order wasn't a discretionary decision made by a leftist/socialist president, it was an order required by a document that we hold up as the Supreme Law of the Land (again, if you don't like it, I fully support your efforts to change it, which can be done... but that's how things stand today).
Another thing; halting the current deportation procedures and letting the people who are currently locked up awaiting deportation (at least the non-violent, whose only crime was illegal entrance into, or illegally extending their legitimate, visa-based stay in, this country) confers a few benefits on global society in general (working illegals will send money back to Haiti, so our tax dollars are safer on that front), but of more importance to most, very tangible benefits to US society specifically: The United States Department of Justice requested a $44,579,000 budgetary increase for this year specifically to "accomodate the increased housing requirements for criminal aliens apprehended along the Southwestern Border." (see DOJ website, www.justice.gov/jmd/2010justification/office/fy10-ofdt-justification.doc - page 35 of budget). Specifically, this increase was requeted for a projected number of 7,000 detainees, who are detained for an average of 55 days. Lets do the math real quick: $44.6M divided by 7,000 people, who are detained on average 55 days means that it costs the Federal Government about $111 of our tax dollars per day to keep an illegal alien locked up (while these numbers are for the texas border, the math must be the same for federal immigration lockups all over... forgive my failure to find exactly how much it costs to keep a specifically Haitian illegal locked up...) So, ultimately, the long view of this order shows that, not only is it required by the Constitution, but it also could very well save us money on at least two fronts...
One final point: Some posts on here advocate sending the illegals back, regardless of the consequences to their lives, simply because they are illegal. They broke the Law when they snuck into this country. I don't dispute that fact. What I do take issue with though is the suggestion that we would somehow be justified in sentencing someone to death (or atleast cruel and unusual punishment) for sneaking in. That pesky Constitution thing we've got has another thing to say about this (if you don't like it, I again fully support your efforts to change it): the Eigth amendment forbids cruel and unusual punishment, which generally means the punishment must fit the crime, and not be more severe than the crime warrants (as determined by societal standards). If we as a society believe that the crime of sneaking into this country is such that it warrants the death penalty, once again, contact your representatives and effect some change. If you're calling for death to illegals, especially Haitian illegals, just to raise pulses, or because it is the polar opposite of what the other side believes, without putting any kind of thought behind that call, its likely time to sit down and have a serious talk with yourself about a thing or two.

The fourteenth amendment applies to those, "born and naturalized in the United States." Upon being born or naturalized they become citizens and are then protected by the Constitution. Those here illegally are not entitled to such priveleges. Additionally, we are not a democracy, we are a representative republic and the Bill of Rights commonly refers only to the first 10 amendments.

As to welfare; TPS does not authorize illegals to live off of welfare. It does remove impediments to them getting jobs, and enables them to live and work here until it would no longer be cruel and unusual to send them home. Besides, even if they were living off of welfare, there is no way that welfare pays anywhere near the $111 per person per day that the DOJ says it costs to detain them.

Actually, the bigger reason the US doesn't "have any fricken money" is because we have spent that money on good produced in other countries. We buy more products from other countries compared to how much they spend on our products and services. So then they have our money (unless they choose to lend it back to us, as China does). Whether you choose to send your money to other countries in exchange for stuff to fill up your house...or whether you choose to send your money to other countries for charity...it has pretty much the same effect on US economics.

If by criminals you mean the initial crime of being here without papers or expired visa, I don't think that is a serious crime and nobody would be remiss of "turning them loose." However, if an illegal immigrant commits an actual crime worthy of imprisonment, they are rightfully incarcerated. I'm sure the immigrants who are given a reprieve will be kept tabs on and when things mellow out they will be contacted and readied for deportation. This isn't a big deal, it isn't a free ride to stay here indefinitely.

Hmm, you'd think that with all that destruction there should be a lot of work for all these illegal aliens IN THERE OWN COUNTRY and they don't need to stay here. If they are so hard working and deserving it seems to make sense they could find all the work they can handle IN HAITI.
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. The last I heard their unemployment rate was 60%. That is not a typo. Their unemployment rate is 60%. There is little work at the best of times and now is clearly not the best of times. This is why most of their money comes from outside the country because there is no easy way to earn money inside the country. $50 US dollars a week sent back to Haiti is an incredible amount of wealth to those people. This is why they try and escape their country and find work elsewhere, even if it is illegal work. It is better than seeing your family starve and I mean literally starve, not what an American means by starving which is living on hamburgers and pizza.
I do care about MY money. I choose what charities to give to. And give I do. A lot. Probably a lot more than you, percentage-wise.
I will NOT have YOU or the government making that decision for me. Especially when it violates law. So quit calling others disgusting.
While the situation was terrible before the quake, they really do need to rebuild now and they really need to do it themselves with some (only some) help from us and other countries. If we do everything, they will not gain one bit.

I was not only shocked, but dissapointed. Grant it they are there to help us, get work, and so on, however, to strong arm (maybe dont seem like it to you, but the speech he gave, had made it clear) comapanies into giving them jobs.
What did the Union do for me while i was employed there at this const. comapany? well, each year they took my raise, and said it was going to keeping the insurance. hmmmm..we were paying insurance for each hr we worked, and about 5,000 members in this Union. $7.00 per hr per person for insurance? yet, when i needed to take my little girl to a specialist, i was denied. i paid in over $9K for insurance that year. $9K more than what my doctors visits were, all my trips to the ER, and so on, meaning i had none. Actually, i dont think but in the whole company, ther mayhave been 3 trips to the doc for injuries. so....when they said they were taking another years raise, i was a bit miffed. Unions dont work for us...they work for themselves.
I am proud that our government has shown proper compassion for the Haitian people visiting and working in America. With any luck we can get them citizenship so they can vote.

In this case, granting temporary refuge to Haitians in the U.S. is really intelligent. Besides the simply practical reality that shipping out people to the cauldron that is Haiti now is virtually a death sentence, it means that people who ARE working and producing (NOT sucking on the "welfare teat") can send money back to Haiti to help, and that they will not become the next wave of Haitian "boat people" again flooding our shores in endless scenes of human tragedy.

I am very relieved that TPS has been granted to Haitians currently in the US. It would be cruel and unusual punishment to deport anyone to Haiti for the foreseeable future.
However, one of the facts in this story is absolutely incorrect: people with Temporary Protected Status can work legally in the US for as long at TPS lasts. See 8 CFR 244.12.

If you remember, there was a lot of anger and bitterness from the people of the Gulf Coast because contractors who won the bids funded by the US government, as the Haitian bids will be, used illegals instead of the out of work and desperate citizens whose homes had been destroyed. I remember news coverage about non-English speaking workers arriving by plane and ships from countries so far away I wondered how they could make any money coming so far from home.

The US needs to understand that charity does begin at home. There is more here in our country that needs funding and attention more than almost any other geo-political hot spot....and at some point our government must start living up to its sworn oath to its citizens first.

Granting Haitians who are already in this country temporary protected status actually changes very little, and is a good thing on so many levels. All this order does is extend to those who are already in this country, albeit illegally, a temporary reprieve from being forced back into a country in which they would face all but certain death.
While "conservatives" may get all up in arms about this action, holding fast to the Constitution they claim to know and love, there is a little thing called the Fourteenth Amendment (part of our Constitution, contained in the Bill of Rights; if you don't like it, use one of the other powers granted to you by that document, your freedom to speak and petition your government for change... that's how a democracy works).
The amendment states, in relevant part: "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States;..." we can dispense with that fairly easily: illegal immigrants are not citizens of the United States, so that clause doesn't apply... it is the very next two clauses that are of particular importance here: "Nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within it's jurisdiction [anyone here, no matter how] equal protection of the laws."
Just as no state could force any citizen off of a busy street, and back into his burning house (even if he was holding up traffic, and making everyone's life temporarily inconvenient), We the People have specifically denied the government the power to round up the Haitians within our jursdiction (which at the very least means within our borders) and send them back to Haiti for 18 months, or until conditions down there get back to the level of squalor the Haitians previously enjoyed. In reality, this order wasn't a discretionary decision made by a leftist/socialist president, it was an order required by a document that we hold up as the Supreme Law of the Land (again, if you don't like it, I fully support your efforts to change it, which can be done... but that's how things stand today).
Another thing; halting the current deportation procedures and letting the people who are currently locked up awaiting deportation (at least the non-violent, whose only crime was illegal entrance into, or illegally extending their legitimate, visa-based stay in, this country) confers a few benefits on global society in general (working illegals will send money back to Haiti, so our tax dollars are safer on that front), but of more importance to most, very tangible benefits to US society specifically: The United States Department of Justice requested a $44,579,000 budgetary increase for this year specifically to "accomodate the increased housing requirements for criminal aliens apprehended along the Southwestern Border." (see DOJ website, www.justice.gov/jmd/2010justification/office/fy10-ofdt-justification.doc - page 35 of budget). Specifically, this increase was requeted for a projected number of 7,000 detainees, who are detained for an average of 55 days. Lets do the math real quick: $44.6M divided by 7,000 people, who are detained on average 55 days means that it costs the Federal Government about $111 of our tax dollars per day to keep an illegal alien locked up (while these numbers are for the texas border, the math must be the same for federal immigration lockups all over... forgive my failure to find exactly how much it costs to keep a specifically Haitian illegal locked up...) So, ultimately, the long view of this order shows that, not only is it required by the Constitution, but it also could very well save us money on at least two fronts...
One final point: Some posts on here advocate sending the illegals back, regardless of the consequences to their lives, simply because they are illegal. They broke the Law when they snuck into this country. I don't dispute that fact. What I do take issue with though is the suggestion that we would somehow be justified in sentencing someone to death (or atleast cruel and unusual punishment) for sneaking in. That pesky Constitution thing we've got has another thing to say about this (if you don't like it, I again fully support your efforts to change it): the Eigth amendment forbids cruel and unusual punishment, which generally means the punishment must fit the crime, and not be more severe than the crime warrants (as determined by societal standards). If we as a society believe that the crime of sneaking into this country is such that it warrants the death penalty, once again, contact your representatives and effect some change. If you're calling for death to illegals, especially Haitian illegals, just to raise pulses, or because it is the polar opposite of what the other side believes, without putting any kind of thought behind that call, its likely time to sit down and have a serious talk with yourself about a thing or two.
Only real problem with this is while letting them stay for awhile till things level out at home is fine but you can bet somewhere between now and Nov of this year the left will find away to make it OK for these illegals to vote too-but then they probably will try and make all illegals eligible to vote for them letting them sta for now is the right thing extending it to far is just more dirty politics but then as shown in Mass the Democrats are good at playing on sympathy ( Vote a democrat because Ted is dead )

A few points of clarity:
The fourteenth amendment applies to those, "born and naturalized in the United States." Upon being born or naturalized they become citizens and are then protected by the Constitution. Those here illegally are not entitled to such priveleges. Additionally, we are not a democracy, we are a representative republic and the Bill of Rights commonly refers only to the first 10 amendments.
Again, this amendment also applies only to US citizens. As you also state several times about changing the constitution...one, we don't need to change it, we just need to follow it. Secondly, wouldn't the better solution be for those who come here illegally to change their OWN government so they can secure the blessings of liberty in their own country?
Finally, in respect to your post that it would be cheaper to keep them...the amount to temporarily house them prior to deportation is much less than providing them with payments from our welfare state indefinitely. Illegals don't pay income taxes which would help support the welfare they are receiving. You are correct that they tend to send money 'home' which certainly doesn't help OUR economy.
Please don't take the Constitution out of context to fit your arguments. Leave that to our corrupt politicians.

I'll also let you in on a dirty little secret that you won't see the media reporting on. African Americans and Black Islanders generally don't get along, there is alot of racism that I witness first hand all the time down in Miami. They may share a similar skin color but they don't share a similar culture. This isn't merely an observation on my part, I have talked to numerous people about it. I also observed similar racism amongst various Asian people when I lived in Los Angeles.

As to welfare; TPS does not authorize illegals to live off of welfare. Actually, the bigger reason the US doesn't "have any fricken money" is because we have spent that money on good produced in other countries. We buy more products from other countries compared to how much they spend on our products and services. So then they have our money (unless they choose to lend it back to us, as China does). Whether you choose to send your money to other countries in exchange for stuff to fill up your house...or whether you choose to send your money to other countries for charity...it has pretty much the same effect on US economics.

If by criminals you mean the initial crime of being here without papers or expired visa, I don't think that is a serious crime and nobody would be remiss of "turning them loose." However, if an illegal immigrant commits an actual crime worthy of imprisonment, they are rightfully incarcerated. I'm sure the immigrants who are given a reprieve will be kept tabs on and when things mellow out they will be contacted and readied for deportation. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. The last I heard their unemployment rate was 60%. That is not a typo. Their unemployment rate is 60%. There is little work at the best of times and now is clearly not the best of times. This is why most of their money comes from outside the country because there is no easy way to earn money inside the country. $50 US dollars a week sent back to Haiti is an incredible amount of wealth to those people. This is why they try and escape their country and find work elsewhere, even if it is illegal work. It is better than seeing your family starve and I mean literally starve, not what an American means by starving which is living on hamburgers and pizza.

Actually, i dont think but in the whole company, ther mayhave been 3 trips to the doc for injuries. so....when they said they were taking another years raise, i was a bit miffed. If you remember, there was a lot of anger and bitterness from the people of the Gulf Coast because contractors who won the bids funded by the US government, as the Haitian bids will be, used illegals instead of the out of work and desperate citizens whose homes had been destroyed. I remember news coverage about non-English speaking workers arriving by plane and ships from countries so far away I wondered how they could make any money coming so far from home.
the illegal immigrant in this story has been in the USA for 7 years yet she has to talk with an interpreter to voice her desire to stay. obviously she has not assimilated to the American culture. i wish her no ill will but she along with all the other illegals are part of the problem. send them to canada, send them anywhere else but the US.

What about all of the US citizens who have lost their jobs because of the state of our economy and a large number of our jobs shipped overseas __— all with no or little fault of their own ? What about all of our homeless, due to the real estate meltdown, or their loss of job, or both? Isn't our "plate" kind of full now?

Everyone seems to forget that a nation like Haiti that has been tormented forever by crime, lawlessness, corruption and dictatorship could in some way pull up its boots and change things. There have been billions of dollars sunk into this country since Papa Doc Duvalier, and it has gone nowhere. It is almost like it is a state of mind. There are many poor nations in the world, but a lot live with pride and peace. Haiti does not. Until the Haitian people themselves realize that they are the makers of their own destinies, we and others can sink billions more into the country to no avail. It is a giant welfare state. And until the mindset changes, it will continue to be so.
To answer your question, Lib.........18 months is too long. But nothing will be done, more will come, we will give them amnesty, they will go on the welfare rolls, their children will go on the welfare rolls and life will go on.
