From Iran's standpoint, withdrawal makes sense since they haven't benefited from the bargain of the NPT. Technologically sophisticated weapons states like the US agreed under the treaty to aid the nuclear energy programs of third-world non-weapons signatories like Iran. Since we lost our puppet dictator in Iran, we have not only completely failed to help Iran's nuclear program, but the US actually blocked a 1983 IAEA plan to provide Iran with safe enrichment technology - one which couldn't have been used to develop a weapon.

The question I'd ask the wingnuts is this: why shouldn't Iran withdraw from the NPT since they haven't benefited from it? If your response is "so we won't nuke Iran", isn't that all the more reason for Iran to develop a meaningful deterrent?

The Persian Empires, and there was more than one, may have disappeared, but the Iranians, which includes the Persians have retained their nationall identity in the years since. They may now be predominantly Muslim, but their language is the same language spoken 2,500 years ago. The current nation has its political roots in the 16th century. They are a nation, and not a "cobbled one".

Iran does need to be confronted regarding its nuclear ambitions. But we do not need to start a war. They are not an immanent threat to us, or to Israel and even Ahmadinejad knows that for Iran to start a nuclear war would be to invite the total destruction of his country.

Bruce, the US only allows the IAEA limited access since it is a weapons state, and the inspections are essentially meaningless because we already have weapons. Where the US inspections do have some merit is in verifying weapons dismantling, but since the US has no intention of ever achieving complete nuclear disarmament - something which is a basic goal of the NPT - one could say that the IAEA inspections are therefor pointless. Further, the US stands in non-compliance of at least article I & II, since we've disbursed nuclear weapons to various NATO members. The US has refused to cancel those agreements. We've also refused to help non-weapons states like Iran with their civilian nuclear programs, so we've undermined the fundamental premise of the treaty.

Note that while the US did recently adopt the Additional Protocol, the safeguards agreement has a national security exclusion so we only show the IAEA what we want them to see.

Obama is dismantling while the rest of the world is building. Check your most recent info online. Our military leaders are seriously worried that we cannot maintain the posture needed to act as a deterrent nation with Obama dismantling some of or newest and most effective weapons.

They have the same concerns that Iran has in terms of fair treatment under the NPT, including the right to enrichment and control of their fuel cycle. Regardless of what happens with Iran, this issue isn't going away for the non-weapons signatories.
