It was only a matter of time before someone would shift the focus from an inside terrorist job to promoting "strict gun regulations" and the typical anti-gun mentality. I enjoyed Chris speaking about how weapon restrictions should be increased even on military post in his words, "especially military locations"? The issue was not that the post had weak regulations on weapons, ammunition, or the storage of arms. It was a matter of a uniformed Officer approaching the main gates at the normal peek time hours. He had a Defense Department sticker which granted him access on post, he was in his normal duty uniform, and had a valid picture military ID. What else was the guard suppose to do? Not every vehicle can be thoroughly searched for most major post. 1 out of 10 may get searched and most of those are vehicles without DOD stickers or the person is not in the military and does not hold a valid military ID.

The person used the weapon was the criminal. What is more alarming is the fact that people like Chris are attempting to shift also public opinion and refuse to use the word, "terrorist" and rather make up any term or excuse for this person except what it is, "home grown terrorism." This guy may have snapped, lost it, went postal, whatever, but his actions were based on a specific change in his religious beliefs. He is a terrorist just like Timothy McVeigh was a home grown terrorist. One believed in Islam the other was a so called Christian.

For those who are not use to the workings or standard operating procedures of a military post, let me explain that you usually do not have a large contingent of Soldiers walking around post with loaded weapons at any given time. Soldiers are not free to walk into their unit's arms room and take a weapon out of the rack. It is a very strict procedure and usually ammo is not stored within the arms room except for a small amount for the protection during opening, movement, or security requirements. The first responders would have been the contracted armed security firm or Post Military Police. You do not normally have a Base Protection Force at the ready unless advance notice was published or if the entire military locations across the world had their defense posture raised to a higher level that would mean increased armed security.

This Major knew what he was doing and this was a planned assault. This was not a random act of violence but a pre-determined act with limited planning and observation involved. He sold his personal property (most of it), handed out several copies of the Quran in English translation (the investigators should review those versions of the Quran to see why style, writing, and or Islamic sect translated them, like an example could be a Wahhabist version Quran may focus more of extreme islam or use of accepted violence against non-believers).

He fired into a large staging area where Soldiers getting ready to deploy overseas receive their medical checks and screening. Packed tightly, standing in lines, and unarmed, this Major knew where to strike. He didnt seek out the rifle range during a live fire event, he choose the area where he knew these Soldiers were going to deploy to countries that are more Muslim then anything else.

Cut through the Politically Correct BS and just deal with the obvious, this guy choose the perverse beliefs of radical Islam and wanted to become a "martyr" for his own cause. Which means that this was an attack by a terrorist. Stop calling it something else. Wake up people.

Major Hassan's OER (Officer Evaluation Report) has not been thorougly discussed or shown on the various media outlets. OERs are usually given to the Officer in question every year or within a change in duty station, or rater for the evaluation. He would have had a Officer or equal or higher rank (he recently was promoted to Major so likely his last rater was a Major or LTC), a senior rater (LTC or COL) and a final reviewer (Colonel or above depending on his immediate chain of command or command structure of his last unit).

It gives the results or observations from his next in command (his boss) with comments on if this Officer rates things like a promotion, conduct, work relations, etc. Is the Officer capable of increased responsibility? What type of remarks were given from his last duty station?

There has been a lot of discussion from the media and people who have not served with the idea or comment: Why didnt we just kick him out of the service? Well, it is not a cut and dry type approach. A service member must be given some form of official notice of he/she failures and at least a method and time to improve any short comings. Questionable action must go through several routes as to determine whether a service member should be removed from active duty. There are many questions that are still unanswered and may never really be fully answered but the idea that Major Hassan could say something to the effect to promote Jihad and then automatically get kicked out of the US Army would not likely happen. Poor OER evaluations, poor work habits, visual anger or disagreement with standard US DOD policy, etc. The most likely course of action would be a formal request from his higher authority to resign his military commission, remove from active duty service, and remove from the inactive ready reserve listing.

But somewhere he fell through the cracks and ended up shooting his fellow Soldiers the same people he had sworn to protect, and serve, and medically treat.

Gun control laws on military bases are some of the toughest I have ever seen. All weapons will be registered with military police/provost marshals office, appropriately stored and can not be concealed. So no - our rules concerning weapons on military bases are just fine the way we are.

Also, leave the military alone and stop trying to change our way of life - if you don't serve, haven't served or never plan to serve, I ask that you keep what you think about our rules and way of life to yourselves. Because for many of you out there, you have no military experience to base any judgement on.

Leave the management of our military to the generals and politicians who write the laws and pay the bills, theService Secretary's, and the President. I mean - hell, democrats and republicans have managed to screw the military up - and I mean monumentally screwed it up. When I retired in 1980 after 20 years in the Army, the death penalty was by hanging. However I can't think of the last military member to be executed.

The last military execution was 13 Apr 1961 - John A. Bennet for Rape and Attempted premeditated murder. President Eisenhower signed the execute order in 1957.

In July 2008, President Bush signed the execution of Ronald A. Gray for rape and murder. Execution was to take place in December 2008, but a Federal Judge signed a stay of execution to allow time for the appeal process. (He was convicted in 1987, the crimes took place in 1986 -1987).

In addition to Gray there are another 8 personnel on Death Row, 4 of which are waiting re-trial, re-sentence, or where court order reversal is pending. All 9 were convicted of premeditated murder or felony murder.

I don't think Obama will intervene in a death penalty case like this. He said at Fort Hood that Hasan will find justice in this world and the next. If the fetus could still be terminated legally, not sure why it would count in the murder count. Even with 1 less, there's still enough for executing him (barring complete incompetence from the prosecution).

It should count in the overall murder count out of respect to the family. By all accounts, they were excited about the baby, so in their minds, the baby was part of the family already. It's the respectful thing to do.

Maybe it varies by state, but there are cases in which the killing of a pregnant woman and her child resulted in two murder charges. Agree that the law (in this case the Uniform Code of Military Justice) will determine what happens here.

Given the low respect for life in our society, recognizing the killing of the unborn baby would be a simple yet decent thing to do.

I agree he should be charged with 2 deaths in the case of the pregnant woman but 1 is good to get him the juice. He's got a dozen more. The only possible way I see him surviving is by the President commuting his sentence to life at the end of his term. I see that as highly unlikely. He made the President look bad and that's not something you really want to do to a Chicago politician. I see him frying in about 5 or 6 years.
