As if going off to war, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan cleaned out his apartment, gave leftover frozen broccoli to one neighbor and called another to thank him for his friendship.
How does a Muslim psychiatrist treat soldiers who are just back from a place that justifies killing Americans as a Muslim's duty? Why on earth would the Army put him at Walter Reed? What were they thinking? And then to send him to Afghanistan?
This was a set up from day one. The Army may not have told him to kill American soldiers but they surely set this entire scenario up.

No one set anything up. You normally love your country when you join the army, he didn't even admitted to being American. The guy is, just like any other Muslim activist, mentally very sick. Allah is just another word for God; if he would have been so religious, and such a good person he would have never killed.
I am not saying he wasn't sick. I am saying that there is another side to this. We are only hearing the army's side. He had hired an attorney to try to get out, he had filed complaints, etc. so obviously this is not a first issue. There is more to this story and I would like to know why they would put a soldier who obviously not a good fit into this position.
The article says the suspect is a story of contradictions. I wish all readers (and reporters) would familiarize themselves with what taqqia means. They might understand why.

I spent a lot of time in the Middle East and most of the muslims there just use their hand and wash it off with their little water bottle.
Your opinions seem to be more of a part of the underlying problem than any sort of sense whatsoever. A soldier is supposed to know the difference between "his team and his fellow countrymen" and "the enemy in Afghanistan/Iraq". Once someone begins hazing or harassing one of their fellow teammates because of a racial or religious bias, then the person with the bias is the person with the problem, as their actions usually end in tragedy. Look at Columbine: kids formed a group because one of their "gay" friends was teased and harassed and that pushed them over the edge and caused them to shoot the place up!

Yet the true tragedy is obscured behind the hearsay insinuations of a few of this mans fellow soldiers who did not like his opinions, and the distorted perspective of the "predominantly christian" society which the mainstream media is forcing on our culturally- and racially- neutral country in which "the white culture" is actually a shrinking minority.

Ever since ex-Pres. Bush's 9/11-fueled lies and Fox media's discriminatory fixation on all things Muslim, everyone in the US- the military included- who even seemingly appears to resemble looking Muslim"~ish" has faced extreme prejudice and intolerant behavior from the minority of this country which constitute what amounts to, as Glenn Beck of Fox news put it, the "white culture".
Who knows what sort of constant bombardment of anti-semitic discrimination this guy faced being in the military? The sticker of his non-christian-sounding quote was torn off his car. His car was so vandalized by one of his fellow soldiers that he completely replaced the vehicle, yet forgave the vandal... Who was the vandal of his car? It must have been a racist, and religiously-discriminating, person who is possibly still in the military! Some retuning war veteran who has obvious difficulty in recognizing the difference between "the comrades on his side" and any true enemy. I hope that the vandal is being watched, or is imprisoned, as he is a true threat to America: he has been trained to kill, he can't tell right from wrong, and he is running free! Yikes!
He was also constantly attacked for his religious beliefs, whether or not anyone is stupid enough to admit it publicly and face possible media exposure and prison time for their words, yet... "he was a lightning-rod"- "not for being a Muslim", but instead because he espoused muslim beliefs of non-war and tried to talk about what he considered a peacefully sensible opposition to war on what he saw as an innocent people (19 "known" terrorists and ~200 "potential" should not a country of 15 million bombed, and over 100,000 dead as "collateral damage" make! Instead of being listened to, and talked to by his peers- in order to be understood- he was attacked for having an opinion, and obviously faced constant harassment from his peers spurred on by his religious beliefs.
Also, all of his superiors at his prior posts had good things to say about him, yet he was "trouble" for having his personal opinions against war again. Is it a requirement of the military that you cannot profess any personal conscience- or opinion- and must instead be a blind, obedient, cold blooded murderer fully supportive of the pack or else you will be it's next target?
Sadly, the advertisements on TV fooled me into thinking it was supposed to be an "Army of One", but upon close inspection, actually appears to be an Army of "we don't really even want you here unless you are a glowing member of, or are in a culture which has been completely assimilated by- and has surrendered any nonchristian religious beliefs to, "Our Lord and Saviour", "the white culture".

Never the less, despite being "bipolar" "Haq the Seattle shooter" did not go to the local Mall to act out obviously religious inspired fantasies. He was rational enough to go out of his way to pick a specific target: Kill Jews at a Local Jewish Center.

Can you just imagine if during World War II there was a psychiatrist major in the military names Hans Schmidt whose parents came from Berlin and the whole family were Nazi sympathizers. The U.S. goes to war with the Nazis, and this poor fellow is harassed because of his Nazi leanings; and he dreads being sent over to Germany. Meanwhile, soldiers with post traumatic stress come to see him and are probably not too comfortable talking to a German after having a horrific time fighting Germans. One fine day this fellow flips out and shoots up the place. What is wrong with this picture? The idea of this being possible in WWII is laughable. We did not trust Nazis then, but then we were a rising world power who knew our friends from our enemies and had a little common sense, both Republicans and Democrats. Um, exactly what religion would that have been? My father was Native American and as far as I know, there was no covert religion in place. He was raised a Christian. As were family members generations before him. Not sure where you came up with that.
Study your history, Before the missionaries came to north america, the Native Americans did have their own form of worship. There is but one God and he comes in many names. I like to belive that God comes to people in the easiest fashion for them to except. I think this guy made a rational choice to defend his Muslim commrades from his military commrades. What a tough (and couragous) decision to make. He was forced to decide between God and Country and he chose God (Allah). Don't get me wrong, what he did was a terrible thing, but what he did was neither cowardly nor crazy. He is absolutely right about a soldier falling on a grenade being equivalent to a suicide bomber attacking soldiers who are enemies to Islam. However, this incident does call into question the wisdom of having devout Muslims in the US military. This is not the first instance where a Muslim in the US military has chosen God over country. I remember a Muslim soldier throwing a grenade into an officer's tent in Kuwait during the Iraq invasion. I think it is time that the military sort through the Muslims in the military and determine which ones are potential threats.

I can tell you from personal experience of a few females, both military members and spouses, that took out contracts on their husbands and their lovers for having affairs. I can tell you about many a domestic violence case where either the male or female partner in the relationship initiated battery, aggravated battery, assault, and murder as part of the violent eppisode.
IQ doesn't even have a predominence in these incidences. Nor does home of record (where a person comes from in civilian life before the military.) So this thing about associating being a racist as solely belonging to "hillbillies" is also ignorant as I have witnessed racists in ALL demographics of society. This coming from a "hillbilly" that calls Williamson County, Tennessee home and lives in Columbia, South Carolina. Thank you Art; I served with many fine men and women for 20 years in the Army of many faiths. One of them, a fellow NCO and of the Islamic faith, I'd have entrusted my very life with and trained often to do so. Another, a skilled surgeon who could make millions "on the outside" but who is dedicated in putting together our Wounded Warriors when they return from war. What these fools seem to forget is that the evil isn't in the religion but in the hearts of men. The excuse to vent that evil can be found anywhere a twisted mind and disturbed spirit wishes to locate place that excuse.
And there's a segment of Christianity that calls for the same thing.
Christian Reconstructionists make no pretense about subscribing to the pluralistic ideas of government or even religious tolerance because this would require them to accept a source of ethical standards other than the Bible. Dominionism accepts wholeheartedly Christian nationalism, maintaining that America was once a Christian nation & rejecting the influence of the Enlightenment upon the founding of our constitutional republic and representative democracy. These two movements - Reconstructionism and Dominionism - provide the philosophical framework for the Religious Right and the underpinnings Neo-Conservativism.
It would serve all Americans well, Christian or otherwise, to educate themselves about these movements. Two of their primary philosophers are Rousas John Rushdoony and Gary North, among others. My interpretation of their efforts is that they want nothing less than a return to ancient Rabbinical Law. They have a long pedigree of denying the Holocaust, defending slavery and segregation & outlawing interracial marriage. Their list of crimes warranting the death penalty would increase ten-fold. At the very least, they advocate the subversion of civil law to that of THEIR interpretation of Biblical law. Many of these proponents of the laity & government's submission to the Old Testament are quite close to Rev. Dobson et al and I have seen them on the 700 Club on television.
Consequently, I don't think it's over the top to see this particular brand of stuff as our version of The Taliban. Do you wish proof it is not? I still maintain that it's not the particular brand of ideology which is at fault but the hearts of men. The only difference between our Taliban is that our democratic institutions and rule of law keeps them from causing much mischief beyond the murder of a physician in Kansas who provides reproductive services to women.
Oh I'm probably gonna get blasted for this because it's not a scientific or super intelligent post. I read A LOT of different articles and the postings that follow them and rarely comment. The reason I don't is that until I'm able to take the time to research all sides of an argument I don't necessarily feel qualified to debate. I know what I feel and some things I've learned but that doesn't mean I know all. Today I wanted to read with an open mind how people are feeling about yet another tragic act of violence in our country. It seems to me that at least once a week there is another report of a senseless act of violence that everyone rushes to make sense of. People want to blame something because it's so hurtful and shocking. I understand that...I've felt it too. I guess after reading so many of the posts on this story and literally feeling the ugly hate and bitter anger coming off some of them I just had to have my say. I believe in God and have read the bible. I've also gone to church and been subjected to the hipocracy and negative judgemental self righteous "believers" that attended beside me. I learned that it doesn't matter which denomination you follow, which religion you follow someone(s) going to interpret it to suit their own ends or back up their own prejudices. In my own life I feel very very passionate about these things the bible says. Judge not lest you be judged, You will reap what you sow and love your neighbor as yourself. There's so much more but I'm not trying to preach to anyone I'm just saying it could be so simple but each person's experiences have taught them something different. Instead of hating someone for their beliefs maybe take the time to find out what led them to those beliefs, those feelings. The one thing I've seen so much of lately is intolerance and close minded bickering among the posters. People...go back and read what you're writing...it's as ugly as ugly as what you're posting about! Some of the things that are being said are so inhumane that I wonder if many don't realize that the violence happening is because someone feels strongly that they are being wronged or their lifestyle is being wronged or or or...I could go on and on with this. If you can write that you'd like to see someone dead or tortured for the rest of their life how far would it be to assume you'd be able to bring that about. I know so many of us are angry these days, we have a lot to be angry about. Again...this isn't about science or history or tons of research done on the topic but of being human and humane. It's just someone asking myself and posters here on newsvine to go back and look at what you're posting. Maybe we could all try being a little less negative, angry, hypocritical and judgemental and listen...agree or disagree but don't wish harm or hate on someone else. It's this kind of stuff that is bleeding into our society and causing this violence. It has to start someplace people or this kind of thing will just keep getting more and more common. I just couldn't take the hatred coming off the board anymore. Democrat, Republican, Christian, Atheist...doesn't matter! HUMAN BEING does. Don't call me names or hate on me here...I didn't shoot those people at Fort Hood...nor did anyone else posting here. Here is why we're screwed.
Historically, unemployment goes to lows in wartime economies and the national debt rises to high levels. However, this is not happening now or in the near future. Both are going to rise significantly when all is said and done. Where will all the jobs and prosperity be when these wars end? The troops will come home to nothing.
One way to avoid it from getting worse is that American companies producing goods overseas must come home and put Americans to work. Washington (either party) can do little to stop this long term mess.

The fact is that Dr. Hasan's colleagues presented considerable evidence to the fact that he was not able to do to his duties because of his personal problems. But Hasan had attained the rank of major, and the military makes if very hard to get rid of someone who is at this rank. Dr. Hasan himself wanted to get out. Hasan's actions are deplorable and inexcusable, and he should be tried for his crimes. But ultimately it is the policies of the US Army which allowed this to happen.
