NYT: Hasan was 'mortified' about deployment

The man accused of the mass shooting at Fort Hood started having second thoughts about his military career after other soldiers harassed him for being a Muslim, he told relatives in Virginia.

Why is it that the US government allows people from other countries to join our armed forces? If we go to another country we can't join their military!! This really bothers me. I believe that the Ft. Hood shooting was pre-meditated and he deserves the death penalty.

Ahh, the NYT's blames it on his deployment.....When in reality everything seems to point to his fundamentalist beliefs, and prior comments about no believing in the US position in Afghanistan and Iraq. There is a clear and distinct difference that the NYT's seems to overlook.

Fear of deployment could have been an excuse not to go to Viet Nam or Korea and could have happened to any of us....but that's not the case here....A hatred for the US's actions in Iraq and Afghanistan are what drove this man over the edge. Big difference.

I find it disgusting that the NYT's spins it this way, the AP piece on another site fails to mention the man is Muslim and had sympathy for Muslims fighting against the US until paragraph 14, and Katie Couric and Briam Williams at no time during their broadcasts last night mentioned his religious persuasion....Now, some might say "what difference does his religion make?", and normally I'd say it doesn't, but in this case, when his Muslim sypathy is a motive for this shooting, it is relevant and should be reported on. I can't wait to see if this guy makes Keith Olbermann's "Worst Person in the World"....something tells me the military who failed to throw this guy out will probably make it though.

How right you are. It was hatred of us.

He was the same as 9-11 "pilots" slipping into our society. When will this government aim for caution instead of these muslim's so called rights?

Not one can be trusted and if they can be so what, I would rather be safe than sorry. Fear of deployment or harassment would have made him run out, not this. And since his family is lying about his reasons, they should be kicked out of America.

There is no excuse - deployment fears or whatever paltry reason is concocted for this man's brutal killing of our soldiers. He walked in with a gun and shot 43 individuals willfully! He is a trained shrink...he knows how to get help. The media needs to wipe the "excuses" off of the headlines and call this as it is....BRUTAL MURDER OF OUR TROOPS! There are no soft words for this act.

True I didn't read most of this when his family entered in with their spin on it, damn them. He is a murderer. It is heartbreaking. BUT, this horror of a so called human WAS acting out against America.

His family can lie all they want about how he was afraid to be sent over, or had been harrassed or whatever lame excuse for this bile they care to make. Either way he could have just up and left.

NO, he was deliberately intending to kill American soldiers. That alone tells us where his loyalty is. HE WAS A TERRORIST and slipped thru.

Time and time again we read of authorities such as the FBI, Child Protections Services, etc., etc. being aware of someone being dangerous or watching an individual yet the laws as they stand now prevent them from acting. The individual's rights seem to overpower the rights of potential victims. Here's a guy who's postings are a sure warning of things to come yet nothing was done - no questioning, no evaluations, etc., etc. When do the rights of potential victims come into consideration?

I'm glad he's not dead. The Army CID will enjoy talking to him and helping him remember what he'll claim he forgot. What is really nice is that under the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice), he has very limited constitutional rights. Those become subordinate to the UCMJ as soon as you take the oath. When they're done with him, he'll wish he was dead. He is not insane, he's a coward just as most fanatics are.

Anybody who is a devout Buddhist, Christian, Hindu or Muslim especially those who attended prayers regularly cannot be trusted and should not be allowed into the armed forces but since they are already in ought to be kept under careful observation. These people are by definition of their faith unstable and one never knows when one touches a sore point that triggers them to turn on one like a dog would if one steps accidentally on its tail.

Poor Poor besieged Hasan AWWWW he was so despondent over being "harrassed" ( a unlikely senario for an officer in the army) So mortified at the thought of being some REMF in Iraq he decided to kill 13 people wound 30 others I am so sure the next thing we hear from the sympathetic NYT is that this is surely GWB's fault.

Don't let anyone paint this man as some tragic figure who by virtue of rasicm and fear acted out of some desprite motivation. This is nothing more than radical muslim extremeism rearing it's ugly head again. Hollering Allah Akbar as he hosed 12 of my neighbors. First as we all should on here tell the families of this tragic that we Pray for them. I stood in Oakland at the age of 18 by onlt three days waiting to leave for Viet Nam; now this is not about me but 1000's did. We had not attended college and medical school on the Govt's dollar. No one said or did anything to hurt other soldiers because we where to deploy to Nam. This country has filled it self with people who care nothing about the Country, or others. It has nothing to do with Dems or Reps; but it has everything to do with those who put people in office that have never served, care not about its retired people, or people who work hard. We have become a country of give me, bail me out, an label those who do point out that we have people here that hate what America stands for. Wake up and stop be silent to those who scream anti-american slogans and flush trash from their mouths about how we should turn the other cheek.

Unfortunately, this man epitomize's profound psychiatric disturbance...what happened is unlikely to have been due to his ethnic origins or his religion. But given our current global struggles with Middle East radicals, we are quick to focus on any event as being strictly motivated by such distorted thinking. People can jump into a swimming pool from the side of the pool, from a raft in the pool, or from a diving board...the issue of how they end up in the pool has nothing to do with the thing that serves as a springboard and everything with their internal drive to jump into the pool. This man was obviously a tortured soul and hit his tipping point...had he truly been an extremist his choice of making a strike would have been much more refined and would have taken out many more people...his actions reveal a very disorganized thought process. He is to be pitied and his actions mourned.

Iwont waste one second of pity for him. He was a coward and a murder. He killed the best America had to offer when they were defenseless. Your amazing ridicules assement of the situation is loathsome at best

I can not believe that the media (especially abc) is making this guy out to be some kind of victum. They claim he did it because he was being made fun of due to his muslim faith and whatever other unacceptable excuses they are reporting. This man is evil. Obviously, his faith did not do much to help him through his issues.

Unacceptable and horrible. I also do not appreciate this monster taking advantage of all the army benefits then killing people because he wants to leave it. He did not want to complete his service for his country but he was more than willing to take money from it for his MD education. What an evil coward. We would not excuse anyone who killed people because they were made fun of for being American.
