I can't be sure, but I have a hunch they cited a violation of their "honor code" which is part of the written code of conduct at the University and gives the administration a legal foothold to enact disciplinary action should any of their students be engaged in any practice that violates said code. This "honor code" covers pretty much everything from wearing provocative clothing on campus to staying out past curfew to engaging in premarital sex, etc. I'm pretty sure any kind of behavior that might sulley their church's reputation or mock their practices in the public eye would fall under that umbrella.

The Church owns the school, and the town and most of the state and it's businesses, media, etc. They do whatever they want. PERIOD. The Mormon Church is second in power only to the Vatican if that tells you anything.

The biggest question he should be asking is whether he paid attention and learned anything that will help him make a living, since now he can't just show a diploma to an employer who will then assume he's smart. I really don't know what he expected would happen. Think ahead people.

Every BYU student signs the honor code before attending the University, so they know that violating church principles will result in withdrawal of the diploma (unless they regret/apologize for their actions). There is nothing wrong with a private University requiring that its student uphold the values of the church. If this man wants a diploma, he could easily transfer his credits to another school. His only aim in appealing BYU's justified action is to try to attack the church and the University.

If Mr. Hardy wants a simple diploma, he would have no trouble transferring his credits to another school. He clearly just wants to make public attacks against the church and get free publicity for his calendars.

Since BYU recieves federal grants and student aid they can't deny Mr. Hardy his degree. By denying him his degree they are in violation of Federal regulations!

Does the university recieve the money from these grants or just the students? That's the difference.

The university is in the state of Utah and the United States, therefore it is subject to their laws. BYU cannot do whatever it chooses to do.

You are right though squirrel. Donny and Marie, in fact the entire Osmond family, have brought a lot of good publicity and a wealth of money to the Mormon Church. Chad Hardy's calendar is bringing negative publicity to the Church and probably none of the money from the sales are going to the church.

Drbacon....no, the Church isn't getting any money now. They would have been entitled to 10% of whatever income he made from it because of their mandatory requirement for titheing. I have a lot of family thats mormon. I agree mormons are VERY judgemental, at least in my experience. Nobody is forced to pay 10% of their income though. I was raised as a mormon but have NEVER been required to pay 10% of anything. As for this guy, I agree that it's messed up to take his diploma but if he agreed that it could be taken away for an "indecent" act, he agreed to have it taken away. The thing is, this guy is speaking for a large group of people by saying that these mormon moms can dress slutty too. If the majority disagrees with him than he needs to take responsibility for his actions. This is why I don't take religion seriously anymore though, both sides are ridiculous. Either you're a religious nutjob or you bash people because they believe something else or nothing at all. They're not violating his rights, he just can't be in their club. I can't be a part of certain groups either. If being a mormon is important to him he can practice at home. I thought the reason for religion was to worship some sort of god not be seen as a sect of something.

LDS believe in having free agency. You have to right to choose to do what ever you want to do. What you don't have the right to choose is the consequences for your actions. As for Maria Osmond, divorce is not a punishable offense through the church. Furthermore, Maria's daughter is an issue with the church and not with the mother. The church is not in the least going to condemn Maria Osmond for being a mother and loving her daughter and by no means is the church going to in any way discourage Maria Osmond from loving her daughter.

Some people have asked why the church doesn't have a religious symbol like a cross displayed. The reason for that is because the members of the church are the symbol of the church and as such are expected to conduct themselves accordingly, simply because all eyes are on the Mormons more then any other denomination. Had that calender referenced Methodists, there wouldn't be any kind of controversial issue to write about because they aren't aren't known for any code of conduct.

Mormon's aren't supposed to drink alcohol or smoke, but the church is not going to punish people or excommunicate them if they do.

As for some guy being excommunicated for being part of some calender, there had to be some other issues involve because posing for the calender is not an ex-communicable offense and if he was a devout Mormon he would not have made any revealing poses for a calender in the first place.

As for having a diploma withheld, I can assure you, he will get his diploma after he has repented.

Yet I see the cross symbol emblazoned on every Mormon Church building I've ever seen.

A church organization is really little more than a social club. As with any club they have their rules and as a member you are expected to adhere to those rules. As with any club, violation of their rules can be grounds for dis-membership. It would behove a potential member to learn those rules and decide if he is willing to follow them before joining.

My sentiments exactly and I have stopped going to the Mormon church. My wife is quite devout but also practical but even so this does make things a little awkward at home. Having come across some secretive beliefs and disliking certain actions of the church I could no longer be involved. I respect the values of the church and care for the membership in general but this is the 'clique of cliques' and so many members are absolutely 'holier than thou'. My best to you as you deal with this. It does not work well to try to fool yourself. As for this calendar, it is not representative at all. 

I'd LOVE to have my name stricken from the rolls and on the way out, take all of my ancestors who were "baptised" into the cult without their consent, with me.

Well said! Nobody wants to obey the rules anymore. I think it starts in elementary school when a child gets in trouble for breaking the rules and the parents run to the school to cry. If you break a rule you should pay the consequence. If you don't like the rule, don't go to the school or work to get it changed. Don't cry "foul" when you broke the rules and you don't want to pay the consequences.

Missionaries wouldn't be allowed to make a calender in the first place. So that that call themselves missionaries that made such a calendar would be pulled off their mission.

Furthermore, they wouldn't be excommunicated unless they displayed a poor attitude and totally rejected the church, otherwise they would face dis-fellowship. Even people that have committed adultery have the opportunity just dis-fellowship if they are repentant for their actions.

And of course if they make a generous contribution to the church that will go a long way in their being forgiven as well.

People shouldn't judge the whole religion from the acts of certain people in the church.
