How does BYU have the right to withhold his diploma? He earned it, correct? He didn't violate any rules, so this wasn't a disciplinary action result, right? Surely at every university there are almost-graduates who act "not in accordance" with the ideals of the university but who aren't denied their earned diploma . . . unless they've violated a written rule. How can BYU do this?
I can't be sure, but I have a hunch they cited a violation of their "honor code" which is part of the written code of conduct at the University and gives the administration a legal foothold to enact disciplinary action should any of their students be engaged in any practice that violates said code. This "honor code" covers pretty much everything from wearing provocative clothing on campus to staying out past curfew to engaging in premarital sex, etc. I'm pretty sure any kind of behavior that might sulley their church's reputation or mock their practices in the public eye would fall under that umbrella.
The Church owns the school, and the town and most of the state and it's businesses, media, etc. They do whatever they want. PERIOD. The Mormon Church is second in power only to the Vatican if that tells you anything.
Well lets hope he makes more off his calendar than he would have with a diploma. ;)
Foolish move on his part IMHO. Should have at least published it under a pseudonym.
The biggest question he should be asking is whether he paid attention and learned anything that will help him make a living, since now he can't just show a diploma to an employer who will then assume he's smart. I really don't know what he expected would happen. Think ahead people.
Every BYU student signs the honor code before attending the University, so they know that violating church principles will result in withdrawal of the diploma (unless they regret/apologize for their actions). There is nothing wrong with a private University requiring that its student uphold the values of the church. If this man wants a diploma, he could easily transfer his credits to another school. His only aim in appealing BYU's justified action is to try to attack the church and the University.

There is nothing wrong with a private University expecting its students to uphold a set of standards. What's next, should they be forced to award a diploma to a student who writes a thesis bashing the church and the University itself?
If Mr. Hardy wants a simple diploma, he would have no trouble transferring his credits to another school. He clearly just wants to make public attacks against the church and get free publicity for his calendars.
Since BYU recieves federal grants and student aid they can't deny Mr. Hardy his degree. By denying him his degree they are in violation of Federal regulations!
Witheld his diploma and kicked him out of the church... so much for breaking down stereotypes about the church.
The LDS Bunch are a fascinating study. Clever enough to feign assimilation, cunning enough to hide their prejudices and xenophobic attitudes towards anyone not like minded and ruthless enough to eat their own to prevent any challenge to the status quo.
Jargon is a fascinating study. "clever" enough to feign tolerance, "cunning" enought to hide his prejudice and xenophobic attitudes towards mormons....
your ignorance is outweighed only by your poorly masked bigotry and hate.
You know, we've been bombarded with too much skin...too much sex...too much make-up and giant designer hair...
Aren't you about ready to see some tasteful, inspiring, and naturally beautiful portraits of women? Perhaps the cheesy slant on "slightly revealing" should have been given more consideration.
I saw the men's calendar-sensuous and most un-church like. Knew it would cause problems. What were those young men thinking? lol
Mormons have to be the dumbest of the dumb to go for the whole deal like they do. Translated invisible texts, etc. Just stupid, like most religions. The only ones to make sense are those that don't have a deity established and maintained by stupidity and "faith" in nothing but others stupidity.
With all due respect, Robtice, your comment makes no sense. I think I know what you're trying to say, but it's worded so poorly that it's counter-productive to your position.
While I know and appreciate that modesty is a biblical directive and certainly disagree with someone who claims to have faith doing the opposite, it seems the Mormon Church is once again being hypocritical. I've seen pictures and tv shows where Donny or Marie Osmond were not fully modest, yet they've never been excommunicated. Heck, Marie has been divorced twice and supports her lesbian daughter-both of which are also against Mormon beliefs.
You are right though squirrel. Donny and Marie, in fact the entire Osmond family, have brought a lot of good publicity and a wealth of money to the Mormon Church. Chad Hardy's calendar is bringing negative publicity to the Church and probably none of the money from the sales are going to the church.
Drbacon....no, the Church isn't getting any money now. They would have been entitled to 10% of whatever income he made from it because of their mandatory requirement for titheing. They cut off their noses to spite their faces. He's better off anyways....now he's free of their total mind control. Best thing that ever could have happened to him.
I have a lot of family thats mormon. I agree mormons are VERY judgemental, at least in my experience. Nobody is forced to pay 10% of their income though. I was raised as a mormon but have NEVER been required to pay 10% of anything. As for this guy, I agree that it's messed up to take his diploma but if he agreed that it could be taken away for an "indecent" act, he agreed to have it taken away. The thing is, this guy is speaking for a large group of people by saying that these mormon moms can dress slutty too. If the majority disagrees with him than he needs to take responsibility for his actions. This is why I don't take religion seriously anymore though, both sides are ridiculous. Either you're a religious nutjob or you bash people because they believe something else or nothing at all. They're not violating his rights, he just can't be in their club. I can't be a part of certain groups either. If being a mormon is important to him he can practice at home. I thought the reason for religion was to worship some sort of god not be seen as a sect of something.
LDS believe in having free agency. You have to right to choose to do what ever you want to do. What you don't have the right to choose is the consequences for your actions. As for Maria Osmond, divorce is not a punishable offense through the church. Furthermore, Maria's daughter is an issue with the church and not with the mother. The church is not in the least going to condemn Maria Osmond for being a mother and loving her daughter and by no means is the church going to in any way discourage Maria Osmond from loving her daughter.
Some people have asked why the church doesn't have a religious symbol like a cross displayed. The reason for that is because the members of the church are the symbol of the church and as such are expected to conduct themselves accordingly, simply because all eyes are on the Mormons more then any other denomination. Had that calender referenced Methodists, there wouldn't be any kind of controversial issue to write about because they aren't aren't known for any code of conduct.
Mormon's aren't supposed to drink alcohol or smoke, but the church is not going to punish people or excommunicate them if they do.
As for some guy being excommunicated for being part of some calender, there had to be some other issues involve because posing for the calender is not an ex-communicable offense and if he was a devout Mormon he would not have made any revealing poses for a calender in the first place.
As for having a diploma withheld, I can assure you, he will get his diploma after he has repented.
Some people have asked why the church doesn't have a religious symbol like a cross displayed. The reason for that is because the members of the church are the symbol of the church and as such are expected to conduct themselves accordingly
Yet I see the cross symbol emblazoned on every Mormon Church building I've ever seen.
My husband got excommunicated by the Lutherans for a lot less than that...
A church can throw you out for anything they want and you really have no recourse but if they would do that would you really want to be part of that group anyway?
A church organization is really little more than a social club. As with any club they have their rules and as a member you are expected to adhere to those rules. As with any club, violation of their rules can be grounds for dis-membership. It would behove a potential member to learn those rules and decide if he is willing to follow them before joining.
I guess when you're Mormon and you're putting together a calendar that doesn't adhere to Mormon teachings then you have to expect some backlash. I think withholding his diploma is ridiculous but he had to know the risk when he did it and he must have decided it was worth it.
Frankly as a Mormon who's quite frankly sick and tired of the church's Holier than Thou attitude toward nearly everything that it doesn't think is absolutely in keeping with its sometimes assinine doctrine I decry both Hardy's excommunication and the withholding of his piece of parchment which IMHO he earned fair and square.
When I hear stuff like this it simply brings me that much closer to renouncing my membership which I am a hair's breadth away from doing already. My problem is that I hav a devout wife who would be devastated if I had my name stricken from the church's roles.
In closing I wonder what the stiff necked church hierarchy would do if they knew just how many of their "Temple Recommend" holders are also active nudists.
My sentiments exactly and I have stopped going to the Mormon church. My wife is quite devout but also practical but even so this does make things a little awkward at home. Having come across some secretive beliefs and disliking certain actions of the church I could no longer be involved. I respect the values of the church and care for the membership in general but this is the 'clique of cliques' and so many members are absolutely 'holier than thou'. My best to you as you deal with this. It does not work well to try to fool yourself. As for this calendar, it is not representative at all.Â
I'd LOVE to have my name stricken from the rolls and on the way out, take all of my ancestors who were "baptised" into the cult without their consent, with me.
If the calendars are considered to be tasteful to the general public then why isn't there at least one sample for us to look at so me can make a better judgment on this.
Hey gemini618. Thanks a lot. I must admit that the photo's and video's are a tad more liberal than I expected but the whole site is funnier than hell.
I work for a large Mormon owned corporation and I first tried to bring this up on one of their network computers. You never would have guessed that they would have that site blocked for having "sexual content". lol. So I looked it up on my laptop. Thanks again.
OH OH....bet the 12 Good Ole Boys sitting in the Temple at SLC are royally pis*sed ! Can we see the thunderbolts and excommunication edicts being readied?
Doesn't look like the ladies kept their garments on (nor did the stud-muffins in the other pics).
For shame! You are throwing away your Celestial Marriage vows and your chance to go to Mormon heaven and serve your Master for Time and Eternity! If you are single, what God-fearing Mormon man will consider you as suitable to be their Servant and vessel to bear all their children?
Get yourself back into those maternity dresses and begat more souls for his eternal glory ! On your knees and ask for forgiveness!
This is a good sign for Mormonism. Women are beautiful no matter their religion and man needs a little spice to keep the baby making thing going, so let's see more! Mormons need an image adjustment for sure.
The least clothed woman I seen was wearing a bikini. I see other men's wives in bikinis all the time. What's the issue here. I see more skin on a public beach than I do in those calendar pics.
"It's more than a social club". I find it refreshing, in this increasingly perverted world, that BYU and the Mormon church have standards and are willing to do something, anything, when a member violates those rules. As in any organization, there are members who participate for social reasons rather than a testimony of the Theology. Members of any organization should know the rules and accept the consequences for breaking them.
Well said! Nobody wants to obey the rules anymore. I think it starts in elementary school when a child gets in trouble for breaking the rules and the parents run to the school to cry. If you break a rule you should pay the consequence. If you don't like the rule, don't go to the school or work to get it changed. Don't cry "foul" when you broke the rules and you don't want to pay the consequences.

OK, the men still can't work on sundays, shopping at all is nearly prohibited 'so you don't force others to work on Sunday', but football is still okay to watch while the tv stations still work, and Sunday dinner is still required - by MOM. Kids can't play on Sunday, usually never with the 'gentiles' any day. Seems this younger generation doesn't see it that way anymore. LOL
Kodiak, it really isn't that easy to have your name taken off the roles. It took my SIL 4 years. You can leave, but - you can't - without the ELDERS of that/it/the ward. It's like your name is engraved in their foreheads - or rock.

Does the university recieve the money from these grants or just the students? That's the difference.
They OWN the University.
And the minds of those that attend...
The university is in the state of Utah and the United States, therefore it is subject to their laws. BYU cannot do whatever it chooses to do.
The guy didn't seem too upset about losing his degree. He appears to be able to make a good living without it.
They pretty much can do what they want as long as they are privately funded and take no government money.
Witheld his diploma and kicked him out of the church... so much for breaking down stereotypes about the church.

feel free to leave your church. Take your hate and bigotry with you.
I just want to know....are these 12 women all married to the same guy???
The article did not mention this as being the "Fundamentalist" Church so I would think probably not.
if they are he must think he is in heaven already

Yea, that's pretty hot stuff for Mormons.
I don't even think there's a belly button showing.

Wow a simple chesscake calender, doesn't anyone realize sex is universal; and that includes Mormons. From the pictures one could see more anatomy on a California or Florida beach.

Not wives, nor moms!
