I'm not a birther or a ditto head or a Republican, nor do I think that President Obama wants anything but the best for our country. I just don't agree with a lot of his domestic policies.
That being said, and granting that he's only been in office for less than 10 months, exactly WHAT international achievements are they basing this award on?

While the President gets the Nobel Peace Prize for doing....nothing, the Taliban are mounting a fresh offensive in Pakistan. 41 killed in a market from a homicide bomber. While he can't figure out what to do in Afghanistan they're having no problem figuring out what they do in Afghanistan and Pakistan,which is kill innocent people. Maybe when one of cities is a smoldering ruin he'll figure out the jihadists are at war with us, whether we try to kill them or not. We need to kill every Taliban or al-Qaida militant who shows us his beady little eyes and then....nothing. Leave them to live like cavemen and if they screw with us again, make them glow in the dark.

I certainly have lost some respect for the Nobel process after hearing this news. I'm not saying that Obama will eventually deserve the award, but this seems somewhat premature especially given the fact that the nomination process was only open for two weeks after he became president. In my opinion that really cheapens the award and provides additional evidence that the Nobel committee has a very liberal bias (in addition to the fact that Gore and Carter).

This is priceless. Not only does Obama have half of America fooled he also has most of the international community fooled also. They stated that one of the reasons he received the award was because he has brought 'hope' back to this country. He may have brought hope back to half this country, but, the other half is scared as hell of him and his policies. Half are mad for him apologizing for us defending ourselves. I would like to feel some sense of pride, yet I cannot. I must have lost the concept of what peace is to be able to grasp what this committee's concept of it's meaning is. I cannot in all truthfulness find the logic or accept the reasoning of these people, for it is totally incomprehensible and irrational. I see no one today anywhere in the world, given the overall world situation , regarding peace, that should have received this award. It simple should not have been award this year. And regretfully I do not see that President Obama has done anything significantly outstanding to merit this award. I believe that this committee has diminished, it's meaning, intent and significance this year, and shall have less meaning and value in the future.

The Peace Prize is a very big deal and quite an accomplishment. I'm a Conservative but an American first. It is true that we have yet to accomplish many of his desired goals but the framework is in place.
It is easy to fly under the radar on policies (or lack of) when all the news is centered around a war or common enemy. If you want to distract the attention of the people to your policies and actions all you need to do is focus on another place. We were too busy searching for WMDs to notice the economy was taking a hit and the Afghanistan terrorists were rebuilding. Just like those with no plan to help with our economic problems are the ones yelling for another surge.
Storm 1.38 - I don't care whether you like him or not, you have to admit there is no basis for this. Did you know that he was nominated only 2 weeks after taking office? 2 WEEKS! What had he accomplished in 2 weeks to justify a Nobel Peace Prize over some of the other nominees? This is clearly evidence that it was spitting in the eye of George Bush. Frankly, Bush had tripled the funding to help the poor and HIV in Africa. Even if you didn't like a lot of what the guy did, isn't that worthy of a peace prize - more worthy than just being a black man elected president who had not had a chance to do ANYTHING in two weeks before nomination.

So I follow the link and read the promises it says that Obama has kept and every one he has kept screams to me 'Bigger Government' and 'More Control'. I look at the ones he has compromised and has not accomplished and I see the important things he wishes he could do but cannot. So in a nut shell, he can appoint tsars and increase spending but cannot actually run the country.

After reading the article, the decision makes a lot more sense. I'm wondering if the haters read more than the headline. Read it if you haven't.
More importantly, I think even the majority of Americans who voted for, support and are happy with the President, have still underestimated the effect his election has had on the rest of the world's opinion of the U.S. I haven't been out of the country since before January, but I'm guessing if I went to Europe I would no longer be ashamed to admit I'm American, as I was under Bush.
What I'm reading from the Negative Fringe Teabaggers is: "Six billion people are wrong and drinking the kool-aid. We 2 million birther teabaggers are the only smart ones!" My advice is, try to see the world from a point of view other than as an American. The fact is, almost every one wants to avoid war, except for an extremely tiny minority of crazies.

Well the Nobel Prize pretty much lost all credence with me when they gave it to ol' "I invented the internet" Gore.
I support President Obama and most of his policies, but I feel that this award is a bit premature. It's almost as if the award was given based on his good intentions instead of actual accomplishments. Nevertheless, I am happy for the President and I do agree that he has already done a lot to restore America's reputation around the world with his words and actions. Those who still accuse him of "apologizing" to the world have not really listened to what he said. He has never said that we (U.S.) were sorry, but only admitted that we have made some mistakes in the past - and that is absolutely true; so has every other country. I hope this award will help him achieve tangible success in bringing about lasting peace on the world stage.

Yes President Bush signed the first TARP bill which was drafted, written and approved by the democratic congress. Yes he had control of the first half of it and it was completely a mistake. On the other side during President Bush's term and with a republican controlled congress the unemployment was 4.5% people were making money and business was booming. And then the economy started to slide in late 2007 after the democrats took control of congress and then crashed in 2008 after the constant media anti bush hate rate from the left to elect their democratic candidate. And since then the slow climb out of the bottom.
Of course obama won a Nobel Peace Prize as this prize has no actual value anymore. Obama won on a promise and speculation not on any actual achievement. At least Jimmy Carter won his after his presidency and after many years as a diplomat at large working for many causes. Obama won his for apologizing for being an American, abandoning our allies in the former Soviet republics, letting troops die while the president fiddles away a decision based on popularity polls and not military decisions, working for the destruction of American industrial capability and handing out entitlements like halloween candy.

Seems people do not understand that peace does not come over night, but President Obama has done more to try and pull the world together then any one I can remember. He has the power to do exactly what Bush did (Cowboy Diplomacy) but has chosen the hard route, which is to hang in there and not go it alone, and to involve other leaders. I do believe it was given as an encouragement more then accomplishment. But Peace is a never ending process and effort and does not happen overnight, it will constantly be something you have to work at. I understand that there are people that love and support the President but don't you think it slightly comical that he won an award for basically being a media creation and for not actually having done anything? When I read the news of him winning it this morning the first thing to come to mind was that it was a joke. Hollywood couldn't have come up with a better script for a farce. Congratulations are in order for President Obama on his award of the Nobel Peace Prize! His great and monumental accomplishments in furthering world Peace has been recognised by the committee. He now joins the ranks of noted peace makers as Yasir Arafat.
Seriously! how can they rationalize this! The man was only in office for 11 days at the deadline for nominations. I propose we change the name to the Nobel Hope Prize. Just makes me wonder is he coherent enough to realize that he has done nothing to deserve this? The right thing to do would be to decline the award. I an betting the President is vain enough to believe he deserves this honor.
I feel it was well deserved, Congratulation Mr. President Obama, but I still don't like the health plan BS,I know many Republicans will whine like little girls but that's life, they will never see past the past, and will live in denial........
I still don't understand exactly what he has done to deserve this. I'm not for or against him getting it. I just would rather they give it to someone that has actually done something...anything at all.
Has he made diplomacy a priority? Yes, but Bush and the UN tried sanctions forever on Iraq, it just didn't work.
Has he stopped the war? Well, no not exactly.

Has he brought peace between Israel and the Gaza Strip? Well, no, and it isn't likely.

An honor bestowed on someone should come from accomplishments. So far, what has been accomplished? We are talking about the Nobel Peace Prize. Where is the peace? Seems to me the United States alone is in turmoil about the direction that it is being taken.
I could care less about these frivolous awards. I'd rather see him bring home the bacon for the people of the United States of America... even if it means ruffling the feathers of other world leaders. Peace in this world comes from strength and integrity... something that we have had pummelled recently. Especially our own strength from within.
I thought that we were a very fragmented country when the previous administration was in office. What I have witnessed in the past 9 months is an escalation of mistrust in the politicians, businessmen, and the citizenry of the country. It's like having a great motivational speaker at the helm that has a recipe for failure.

Has anyone mentioned that Obama was nominated for this prize just two weeks after taking office, which makes him receiving the award, even that more egregious.
I was surprised to see progressive Democrats and conservative Republicans asking the same question; Why?
Giving this award to someone who has only been on the world stage a few years and has yet to accomplish any significant goal as far as achieving world peace. Who by the way continues Bush policies in almost every foreign policy matter, although his talk doesn’t match his walk!
This certainly weakens the left’s antiwar effort when an international body has awarded Obama for carrying on with Bush polices.
From reading some of these comments, it's clear that most of the conservatives have no knowledge of: (1) what constitutes criteria for the Peace Prize, and (2) history of the prize and recipients. Maybe the Nobel Committee gave him the prize as a show of support in light of the animosity, bigotry, and outright loathing he's facing from the illiterate, backwards, and self-serving portions of his constituency. Or maybe they just thought he's a refreshing change from a moron who thought the U.S. had the right to do whatever it wanted. Either way, congrats Mr. President!

When you take into account the timing of the nomination I think this is every bit as much about recognizing the American people who elected him, as it is about recognizing Obama himself. Love him or hate him, you have to acknowledge his ability to unite a lot of people in this country, and for that matter, around the world. Gaining the nomination and then winning the election was really quite an amazing accomplishment, particularly when you look at how brutally, deep seated and hateful the opposition is.
The fact that a movement about hope and doing the morally right things without prejudice, managed to defeat hate, fear and greed is historically significant. Although the credit really lies within all those who united in support of those ideals, you must also credit the man they all rallied around.
It's not so hard to rally strong, hateful opposition to something, but it's much more difficult to rally strong support around hopeful ideals. In many respects this mirrors the founding of this country 230 years ago. There are parallels to Abraham Lincoln who most of us rank as one of the most honored presidents in our history.
The award is about changing the rules of the world. It's about supporting the same ideals. It's more about encouragement than accomplishment.
You may choose to say the Nobel Committee is a bunch of intellectuals and that's mostly true. That doesn't mean their judgement is wrong, if anything it's likely more analytically based than emotionally based. The Committee is saying they support our new direction. It's a celebration of intelligence overcoming stupidity. In a cruder way, it's about the nerds beating the jocks and the US recognizing the value of giving leadership responsibility to brains rather than brawn.

This award is great for our President and our country, America. It is sad and disgraceful that many of the people who post here do not realize we are part of the World.
Usually to win an award, you actually have to do something and be successful. A few speeches is not an accomplishment. Apparently, this is the Norwegians giving an award to reward Barack for promoting the UN. He has done nothing to curb nuclear proliferation, and nothing to change international politics, other than retreating from US unilateralism (to a certain extent, unless you ask Afghanistanis or Pakistanis).
As a European, i'm happy that the US finally has a president who is more open to the world, more diplomatic, not so self-centered. His biggest problems are the domestic issues though, but i have no doubt he's doing his best to turn those things around for the better of the country and, considering how deep the econonomic hole is that the US needs to dig itself out off, Obama's decisions may not always lead to the expected results, which are of course the best opportunities for the opposition to label him as being incompetent.
However, i do have to agree that it is too premature for Obama to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. The good intentions on diplomatic level are there, but the consequences of his decisions need more time to reveal themselves. Too early to get it.

Call me racist but I read someplace that compared to the 2004 election, a smaller percentage of voters actually voted in the 2008 election. The total number of voters went up slightly, but the percentage went down. The African-American vote went up a large amount and the older population who normally vote Republican went down. Everyone had been predicting that Obama would win the Presidency by winning a overwhelming percentage of the huge upswing in young voters. The huge upswing in young voters never happened, the disheartened older americans who were upset with the war stayed home, and the huge upswing in African-American voters along with the independents that were upset with the Iraq war, carried Obama to the Presidency.
I would not count on the Independent vote in 2012, the African American vote probably will not increase as much as it did in 2008, and the older people will not make the same mistake of sitting on their hands in 2012. I hope the President does good things for our Country, but I have not seen anything but bad promises being kept, and good promises being discarded.
People need to step back and read the article again. It stated that the nomination deadline was less than 2 weeks after he took office. And he got this award for giving people hope? That's it? Hmmmm I'm sorry, I usually try and defend him against the constant barrage of Repug attacks, but this is too much. He neither deserves the award nor the nomination. While I agree that this award is premature if based on accomplishments, the very election of Obama is symbolic to the rest of the world. I think people at least can hope that the US will be more circumspect and thoughtful in foreign policy, perhaps not run around starting wars on false pretexts and such.
Most Americans do not understand just how profoundly Bush was despised in other countries--even our allies. My company is based in the UK and my colleagues there take a keen interest in US politics. When Bush's term was over, the reaction from one of them was "thank god the retard is gone".
Shame there isn't one for generating commerce and growing the country's economy.

This definitely demeans the accomplishments of the previous winners like Ghandi, MLK, and Mandella. I mean, Carter had to work his butt off to get Egypt to recognize Israel, and to get the two of them to agree to peace. This ranks right up there in humor with the other bit of news I heard this morning, that Marge Simpson is going to be on the cover of Playboy and they're doing a full spread on her. I ran into a$$holes like you while in the corporate world... they never could understand the power of words and inspiration and were destined to mediocracy forever. A leader that can give people a vision... a sense of purpose... a sense of direction... and an increased motivation to get there, is worth 1000 pencil pushing "managers". Managers that "force" people to do things their way by playing the war/adversity card at the first sign of adversity get very little truly accomplished and realize only very short term results (e.g. Bush).
Maybe this IS just as much a statement against our old policies as it is for Obama, but if you have any concept of true leadership at all, you would understand where the committee was coming from.
It wasn't long ago that I would have hoped that they would wait to give him this award for fear that it would further divide us. But recently I have been convinced that the notions you and the GOP have about Obama and the Democrats needs to be thrown back in your face and met head-on.

Uh, yes it is. What are you nominated for? Things you've done. Then the commission gets together and discusses which candidate is the best. They give their arguments and evidence to support their argument. That's how they determine who to give the award to. They don't sit there and say "ok I think this guy is going to do something great. I went to my aol account and there was an explanation of why it was collasped...evidently there was something added onto my comment that I never wrote...something about Former President Bush. What is in the comment now is all that I wrote. I don't know how this happened or why, I never write anything derogatory about Former President Bush as far as I'm concerned that is in the past and we have to deal with the future. I don't know how someone was able to do this. I would like to feel some sense of pride, yet I cannot. I must have lost the concept of what peace is to be able to grasp what this committee's concept of it's meaning is. I cannot in all truthfulness find the logic or accept the reasoning of these people, for it is totally incomprehensible and irrational. I see no one today anywhere in the world, given the overall world situation , regarding peace, that should have received this award. It simple should not have been award this year. And regretfully I do not see that President Obama has done anything significantly outstanding to merit this award. I believe that this committee has diminished, it's meaning, intent and significance this year, and shall have less meaning and value in the future.
Just to be clear, I am not a Conservative, nor am I a liberal, but I do believe any person with a reasonable ounce and logical amount of sense, would see that this award is not deserving or merited
I've read a few threads whereby people think the President of the United States hates this country. I couldn't disagree more. I think the reality is that those that ridicule his success and cheer his failures are really the ones that hate this country. How can you say you love America and then hope for failure?

I find it humorous that the escalation of war in Afghanistan earns you a peace prize. Those that have voted to give it to Obama have truly cheapened the award. Awards like this should be devoid of politics and this obviously is not the case.

Besides shocking the Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline, it should also shock many others and cause them to wonder just how that came to be. For an election where there were two very strong candidates on one side, and a much weaker list on the other, which still resulted in a respectable, and non-legally contested win for one side, I do not remember so many people making so much of a loss and taking it so personally. There was also the problem of many people who were very unhappy with the previous administration, and took that out on the idea of returning that party to power, hardly an unprecedented event.
We are also two years into an unprecedented recession, which has placed innumerable people on both sides under an understandable amount of frustration, stress, and even anger. This recession has been building for decades, and it will hardly be solved in days, months, or even years. At the time it officially started, we had hardly anything left to fight it with, not money, not a manufacturing sector, and surely not a loyal American financial sector.
But as the previous primary leader in all areas for the rest of the world, we were seen as a country with little clear direction for the future, and more of the cause of other countries' problems (which was especially true in the financial area) than as a potential solution.
I think the world still expected us to pull a rabbit out of a hat, as we had done so many times in our past. We ourselves are now such an ADD, instant gratification that even the Obama supporters in this country expected all our domestic problems to be solved by at least January 22.
But too many people do not realize that the world has moved on, and this is the 21st century, with a global economy. The Nobel Prize, though I doubt many can dispute has become politicized more than its originator intended over the decades, was in fact intended for “the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." "The prize can be awarded for current efforts, rather than for having accomplished a goal or resolved an issue." [emphasis mine].
Even before winning the election, and certainly before being inauguration, Obama had already reached out to other former allies in an attempt to restore or improve relations, He had also made very definitive overtures to those who were responsible for much of the discord in the world. He had acknowledged that we were not a perfect nation, but that we would attempt to become that which most in the world remembered. He and his administration resolved the economic stability necessary to at least allow other countries to begin the same rebuilding process we are engaged in. He selected an excellent and respected Secretary of State, and several experienced envoys to deal with those who were not on paths he felt were productive to world stability and peace.
In ten months, he has not pulled the rabbit out of the hat. But he started with a very large rabbit and a very small hat. It might appear that others may not be as impatient for "instant gratification" results our society measures everything, including pizza delivery, by. It may be that those outside our border are not as caught up in the continuing battle we are having over an election that ended almost a year ago, and have moved on to what does need to be done on the world stage, since this global economy is no longer revolving around the United States of America anymore.
When we can as a people get over that election, and realize we are all suffering for the many, many years of our own collective political neglect as we pursued, in isolation from our neighbors generally and almost always at the expense of other citizens we didn't personally know, the American Dream, we may remember "one nation, under God, indivisible". We may realize that the media, of all persuasions, is just a money-making operation, which will feed our need for that instant gratification with anything we want to hear, as long as it makes a profit.
We may begin again to understand that as a single nation, it is possible to renounce incivility in favor of a civil debate. We may understand that people can disagree without being disagreeable. We may decide to look for common ground to rebuild from, instead of wedges to further divide us.
This award went to a man for goals he has set for the world and to us as citizens of this country, for attempts to inspire all of the global community to look ahead and to be a part of an effort to have a world where we can all once again prosper and achieve our dreams. It is simply a sign of hope for this country to encourage us in our efforts to try to regain a position of leadership. It, like the rejection of this country for the Olympic games, is about us, as a country, more than an award for a single person.
I would think we would want to see both of those, and many other events, in that context, and at least strive to become the united people we once were, who the world can indeed look to as Reagan said, "that shining city on the hill".

I think it has been very hard for our President to accomplish anything when so many are working so hard to see him fail for their own political gain. For a Country to achieve greatness it takes cooperation and team effort which we are sadly lacking right now.
When I read these posts I see a serious lack of respect on the part of many. You may not agree with the policies of the current President, but it certainly serves no purpose to show such disrespect. Our constitution gives us freedom of speech, but I don't think that extends us the right to be disrespectful and hateful.

Why does everything bad about Obama get responded to with a "but Bush did this"? Can't you defend the messiah on his own merits? As kids, if you got in trouble for hitting a sibling, did you say "but he hit me first Do you also believe that two wrongs make a right? Do Bush's failures or errors make Obama's errors and failures OK? I don't quite understand that principle - that Bush's negatives negate Obama's negatives to make Obama a positive? Interesting.

As a former Republican, I voted for W twice. The first time, I had no regrets but a few months after the second time I voted for him, I came to the realization that he blatantly lied to the American people about WMD's - and for this I changed party affiliations to registered independent.
So to answer your question, I ALWAYS wish the President well as his success will usually "trickle down" to the citizen level. I voted for GHWB when he lost against Clinton and voted for Bob Dole when he too lost against Clinton. Was there ever a time when I openly wanted President Clinton to fail? - NEVER! I certainly disagreed with many of his policies and initiatives, but never once found it rewarding to watch him wallow his defeats. I find this very much an un-American trait.
With much disgust, I now see my former beloved Republican Party awash with too much arrogance and hatred. Watching the extreme right exalt in Chicago losing out on an Olympic bid as though the President were the one personally responsible for the Olympic selection committees decision was an embarrassment. I'm sure that if Ronald Reagan were alive today he would be mortified at the lack of civility from his fellow Republicans.
I'm very happy now to consider myself an independent. Even though I did cast my vote for the current administration, I still have the right to be critical of some of his decisions and choose to do so in a way that is constructive by writing my congresswoman. The reaction from the lunatic right fringe to this incredible honor awarded to President Obama was so predictable as to be laughable in and of itself. There is absolutely nothing that Obama could do to satisfy some of this knee-jerk Obam haters. I wish to remind all of you making such absurd (and frankly unintelligent) comments in reaction to Obama's winning the Nobel Peace Prize that he has done more to restore the image of a decent and good AMERICA to the globe of nations than any president in many, many years. Look at the statistics ... people from around the world view the United States much more favorably because of the president's leadership (by double digits over our last sorry mistake of a president). The Obama-haters, the so called "birthers," the saliva dripping lunatic fringe are having a field day on this one, and my only comfort comes from knowing that their reaction is based in their total and absolute indignation that there is a Democratic president in the White House, and for many of them the blatant racism that they can no longer keep under wraps. Well, I'm sorry folks, but the world is marching forward, there is no longer time or room for the negative hate-mongers out there. Your numbers are going to be overcome by a tidalwave of excellent diplomatic leadership, the leadership of hope for something better, and the arm in arm forward march of ALL people (of whatever race, creed, or sexual orientation). It doesn't matter how long he has been in office. He has extended his hand to those we have been at odds with for decades and has made some progress. This is not an award for the best president or leader, it is an award to the person who has done the most to promote peace on the only world we have and I think he fills the bill quite nicely. It doesn't matter if he is Democrat or Republican, it doesn't matter if he is white, brown yellow or green with big pink polka dots. He is a decent human being who only wishes for this world to be a more peaceful place for everybody and has chosen the Presidency of the United States of America as a forum to further that cause.

I support your statement, but I think that this news actually is more about the Nobel committee than Pres. Obama. It's not that I think the president is bad, just that there hasn't been enough tangible deed to warrent an award.
Unfortunately this award demonstrates that the Nobel Peace Prize is irrelevant.

What President Obama has done is begin the process of repairing the damage done by 8 years of Bush administration foreign policy. His words during the campaign not only got him elected, but inspired hope for millions of people all over the world.

Despite the anticipation that accompanies it, the marking of a president's first 100 days in office is a decidedly predictable affair. The White House, while downplaying the metric, nevertheless goes to great lengths to stress the enormity of its own accomplishments. Critics, not surprisingly, carry a diametrically different message; only this time, terms like socialist and fascist are bandied about.
That said, conservatives and progressives alike do seem to be in agreement on one aspect of the Obama presidency: one hundred days into office and a lot has been done. From new approaches to two wars to more than a trillion dollars of government spending; from pirate attacks to flu epidemics; from controversial cartoons to Senatorial defections; a full news day has not this administration lacked.
The abnormally packed cycle has had its side effects. Stories that once could or would receive front page treatment have faded fast. Indeed, some of the most consequential changes made by the president to date - affecting our nation's health care system, infrastructure, urban and foreign policy - have received modest to little coverage, either discussed but not appreciated, or reported but not in great depth. As Obama gets set to host a press conference marking his first 100 days, the Huffington Post asked administration officials as well as Democrats inside and out of government for their picks of under-appreciated stories during this time period. Here are ten of those stories.
1. Health Care: The Obama White House cleared an important hurdle in the health care reform debate when it appropriated $19 billion in the stimulus package to help implement an electronic medical record system. The money is paltry compared to the hundreds of billions set aside for an overhaul of the health care system in the budget. But officials inside and out of the White House say its significance is hard to overstate.
"We need to have health IT so we have a better idea both of what works but also... so people can share information," Zeke Emanuel, Obama's health care adviser told the Huffington Post in mid-March. "We are on our way in a way that we have never committed ourselves before."
2. Communications: A presidential campaign built on innovative messaging and advanced technology has, naturally, become a White House defined by similar characteristics. As such, the reach of the administration's new media efforts - from hosting online question-and-answer sessions with the president to publishing the first White House blog - has been as expected as appreciated. It's unfortunate, said one tech savvy Democrat, because the new policies have had tangible impacts. "The White House streams every event with the president on its website, even press events," he said. "It's remarkable because, this Sunday they held a swine flu press conference that ordinary people [including many who may have been personally nervous about the topic] were able to watch online... Before you had to wait for a readout or hope that CSPAN would cover it. This is one of those things that people don't quite understand the significance of."
3. Transportation: Since the passage of the economic stimulus package in mid-February, the Obama Department of Transportation has approved 2,500 highway projects. The movement of stimulus money out the door has been as swift as it has been effective: $9.3 billion has been spent in all 50 states. Touting its impact, DOT officials say 260,000 jobs are expected from this investment. And with competition for contracts fierce, the department is set to approve even more projects than previously envisioned. "There will be more money for additional transportation projects," said the official.
4. Education: Maligned for its handling of the financial and banking crises, the Obama Treasury Department has nevertheless implemented policies with real qualitative and quantitative impact on debt-burdened families. Chief among those was a $2,500 tax credit to help offset the cost of tuition (among other expenses) for those seeking a college education. Nearly five million families are expected to save $9 billion, according to Treasury officials.

5. Cars: The automobile industry at the White House and Congress's behest has undergone seismic structural changes, managerial reorganization, and massive cuts in employment. But for all the tough love, the president has put in place the framework for an industry recovery. Perhaps the most significant of steps was to allocate $2 billion in stimulus cash for advanced batteries systems. One high-ranking Hill aide called battery technology "the next big frontier" in the automotive world, adding that if the U.S. could dominate this market it would reclaim its perch as the world's premier car manufacturer.
6. Pakistan: Cognizant of a destabilizing situation in Pakistan, the administration's diplomatic team, with a major assist from Japan, secured $5 billion in aid commitments "to bolster the country's economy and help it fight terror and Islamic radicalism" within the country. The money, as Pakistan observers -- notably Senate Foreign Relations Chairman John Kerry - note, will prove instrumental in bringing the nation away from the brink of failure and increased Taliban control.
7. Cities: More than any prior president, Obama has put a spotlight on America's struggling cities, even creating an office of Urban Policy in the White House. It is the Justice Department, however, that lays claim to one of the most consequential of urban affairs achievements. Through the Recovery Act, DOJ secured $2 billion for Byrne Grants, which funds anti-gang and anti-gun task forces. The money, cut during the Bush years, is expected to have massive ramifications on inner-city crime and violence.
8. Engaging the Muslim World: While certainly discussed, foreign affairs experts insist that Obama's engagement with the Muslim world has been at once remarkable and under-appreciated. From the first interview with Al Arabiya to his Nowruz address to the Iranian people, to his proclamation that "American is not at war with Islam" during an appearance in Turkey, seasoned observers have been routinely impressed. "Through these [statements and interviews]," said one Democratic foreign policy hand, "He has been able to dramatically change America's image in that region."
9. Forests: Since taking office, the White House has put under federal protection more than two million acres of wilderness, thousands of miles of river and a host of national trails and parks. The conservation effort - the largest in the last 15 years - came with the stroke of a pen when Obama signed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 in late March.
10. Tone: Leaving a meeting at the White House on Tuesday a progressive member of the House of Representatives commented to the Huffington Post just how impressed she was with the president's manner. "He is so calm," said the member, "and has a great ability to make you feel like you're being respected and listened to."
It is not, necessarily, a unique observation. But among many Democrats and even casual observers, Obama's tone is cited as one of the chief catalysts for his outstanding early poll numbers. "Despite record job loss," said one Democratic aide, "there's still hope in America." Indeed, from the beginning of his presidency the percentage of people who believe the nation is headed in the right direction has risen from 19 percent to 42 percent, according to a recent ABC News-Washington Post Poll. Minus that calming influence, these numbers don't exist and neither does the Obama agenda as we know it.

I lost respect for this award when they gave it to Yasser Arafat in 1994... The latest developments haven't exactly restored it.
For those who are critical of the posters who don't think he deserved this award, I would note a couple of things. First of all, the fact is that he has done nothing to deserve it. Assuming the other posters are correct in that the nominations were made on Feb. 1, what had he done in 11 days that warranted his nomination? This strikes me as both a political left move and also comes across as similar to the "feel good, self-esteem" garbage that started to sweep through our education system 25 years ago. We want kids to feel good about themselves, so we give everyone A's and tell them how proud we are of them. Sorry, but that did more to destroy our kids, their self-esteem and our education system than most anything. Just as the kids who knew they didn't deserve it felt, Obama knows he is pulling the wool over our eyes. Secondly, there are basically 2 philosphies out there. One is that we judge people by their good intentions. Those who hold that point of view have high praise for FDR, Kennedy and Obama. The other philosophy is that we judge people by the results. These people have high praise for Washington, Lincoln and Reagan.
So far, all I've seen from Obama is what looks like a systematic destruction of our country. He's taking us away from all the things that made our country the greatest that ever existed. And, he is making us weaker in the process. You may like his apparent intentions, but, history has shown that everything he is trying will not work. It never has worked. Kind of reminds me of the wheel. For eons, people tried to invent a wheel to help move heavy things. All early attempts were at making square wheels. These didn't work. Then someone came along and invented a round wheel, and it worked. Then along comes a great orator that the people follow and he promises that he will create the greatest square wheel ever invented. His followers are estatic. After four years, the results are unveiled....

Ken and Brian, It might be that you need to look a little closer at your own views and consider how others might view leadership. You say he has not accomplished anything and, as a "manager", that would be true. But the committee recognized him as a leader... one who inspires others to take peaceful actions. They have observed that the world's "political temperature" has ratcheted down about 10 degrees and that suddenly world opinion means something and the U.N. is getting its relevence back... primarily due to Obama's inclusive approach.
That is what leadership is. That is what he has accomplished. There will be many more "measureable" accomplishments going forward, but "changing the world's political atmosphere" is not minor.

1. That's a good thing. One of the things said to reduce cost on Health Care. But why stop there why not do more to cut costs (Besides a public option if competition alone will drive down costs then allow Insuance companies to compete accross state lines, no need for massive overhaul.)
2. Since blogging and Internet Web-Casts are relitively new how is that a knock on other President's Bush maybe yes but no further back than that. All he did was use a new technology to tell lies or uneducated guesses (I don't think he lied when he said if he didn't pass the Stimulus Bill right now Unemployment would never go above 8.5%, but I know he obviously used someones 'uneducated guess'.) to the American people.
3. Every time I drive a Road Construction crew I see 1 or 2 people working and like 5 standing or sitting around doing nothing. Plus with the contracts being so competitive, Contractors have to Bid jobs at next to nothing or at Cost. This does not promote small businesses it drives them out of business, since the only people who can survive long term with little or no profits are extremely large corporations that have a surplus in the bank. Not as good as it sounds, believe me.
4. Why are we continually setting aside money for higher education while grade schools get less and less funds. Seems to me that what's the point if the kids are to stupid to get into college in the first place. Why keep setting money aside for tuition but nothing aside for books and quality teachers at the lower levels of education? Seems bass ackwards to me.
5. Didn't GM & Chrysler already have a R & D Department? Seems to me all Obama did was raise unemployment and put buddies in cushy Mangaer Jobs over there. Advanced Battary Systems were already being researched at GM & Chrysler as well as Ford. So what's new other than the unemployment rate?
6. Funny since that is what Bush did in Iraq, (If you say WMD's I am going to scream) Bush built numerous infastructure projects and roads in Iraq to help advance that country. But when Obama does it Pakistan it's worthy? I am not saying this is a bad thing at all just wondering why it so wrong for Bush yo do it & not Obama? again if you say WMD's my head will explode!
7. So hear we go again more campaigning and talks! Why not use that money to hire more Police? That alone helps Unemployment and Improves the inner-city violence and gangs. Seems like another "all talk and no action" campaign to me?

I don't believe in Polls there are far too many people in this country who base thier decisions on Polls instead of any independant thought, research, or common sense. While you may be somewhat correct that inspiration is a facet of leadership, it is still only a facet. There are many things that make up a leader. A leader inspires confidence. Take a look around - there are many many people that have no confidence in Obama. A leader obtains results - shall I mention the doubling of unemployment (after the promise of less than 8% if the stimulus was passed)? How about runaway spending in our government.
Just where is Obama leading in the business end of our government? Honestly - we're broke and he keeps on spending like there's no tomorrow. How is that leading?
I can sit here and name several other total wastes of time by this presumed leader but we all know what they are.

The only really positive thing that I see him doing is to agree to meet with other world leaders regardless of past status or problems. I actually agree that this is a good thing. But this isn't enought to warrent this award.
I'm not saying that his action won't some day earn the award, but I just can't see how it fits now.
I'm afraid that this award is a gift for who he is (the first black US president and not Pres. GWB) and not for what he has done. So, is it an award because he's black? Is it an award because he's' not GWB? If so he has accepted an award based upon racial reasons or is knowingly snubbing an ex. Pres.
I sincerely believe that he should have politely declined.

Please become acquainted with the actual standards the committee uses to determine an awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize, as well as very good reason for why this award may have evolved the way it did.
The Nobel Prize, though I doubt many can dispute has become politicized more than its originator intended over the decades, was in fact intended for “the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." "The prize can be awarded for current efforts, rather than for having accomplished a goal or resolved an issue." [emphasis mine].
Even before winning the election, and certainly before being inauguration, Obama had already reached out to other former allies in an attempt to restore or improve relations, He had also made very definitive overtures to those who were responsible for much of the discord in the world. He had acknowledged that we were not a perfect nation, but that we would attempt to become that which most in the world remembered. He and his administration resolved the economic stability necessary to at least allow other countries to begin the same rebuilding process we are engaged in. He selected an excellent and respected Secretary of State, and several experienced envoys to deal with those who were not on paths he felt were productive to world stability and peace.
In ten months, he has not pulled the rabbit out of the hat. But he started with a very large rabbit and a very small hat. It might appear that others may not be as impatient for "instant gratification" results our society measures everything, including pizza delivery, by. It may be that those outside our border are not as caught up in the continuing battle we are having over an election that ended almost a year ago, and have moved on to what does need to be done on the world stage, since this global economy is no longer revolving around the United States of America anymore.
When we can as a people get over that election, and realize we are all suffering for the many, many years of our own collective political neglect as we pursued, in isolation from our neighbors generally and almost always at the expense of other citizens we didn't personally know, the American Dream, we may remember "one nation, under God, indivisible". We may realize that the media, of all persuasions, is just a money-making operation, which will feed our need for that instant gratification with anything we want to hear, as long as it makes a profit.
We may begin again to understand that as a single nation, it is possible to renounce incivility in favor of a civil debate. We may understand that people can disagree without being disagreeable. We may decide to look for common ground to rebuild from, instead of wedges to further divide us.
This award went to a man for goals he has set for the world and to us as citizens of this country, for attempts to inspire all of the global community to look ahead and to be a part of an effort to have a world where we can all once again prosper and achieve our dreams. It is simply a sign of hope for this country to encourage us in our efforts to try to regain a position of leadership. It, like the rejection of this country for the Olympic games, is about us, as a country, more than an award for a single person.
I would think we would want to see both of those, and many other events, in that context, and at least strive to become the united people we once were, who the world can indeed look to as Reagan said, "that shining city on the hill".

Wow, apparently now it's possible to get a Nobel Peace Prize for just talking and not doing anything. How does one promote peace by expanding a war? What a joke. At least the other Nobel prizes are actually earned for real merit and not just bequeathed to whoever. I knew when Al Gore got one for lying about global warming that this whole thing was a sham.
I would like to feel some sense of pride, yet I cannot. I must have lost the concept of what peace is to be able to grasp what this committee's concept of it's meaning is. I cannot in all truthfulness find the logic or accept the reasoning of these people, for it is totally incomprehensible and irrational. I see no one today anywhere in the world, given the overall world situation , regarding peace, that should have received this award. It simple should not have been award this year. And regretfully I do not see that President Obama has done anything significantly outstanding to merit this award. I believe that this committee has diminished, it's meaning, intent and significance this year, and shall have less meaning and value in the future.

As a conservative, I view life through the prism of reality and not emotions. For an award of this nature to have any meaning whatsoever, it needs to stand for something. By giving it to Obama, it shows that Obama's words are more important than his actions. He has done NOTHING. He speaks a good game, cross tracking his words from speech to speech while sticking his wet finger in the air to find out what way the wind is blowing. Obama has NO substance and NO experience, but yet he is chosen for a top award.
This is an embarrassment to any real thinking person. I'd feel the same way if it were given to any other president after only serving 11 days. My opinion that the award is meaningless is based upon the lack of reasonable service of the person the award is given. I always find it interesting that the right has such problems with Obama's "lack" of international experience yet had no problems with G.W. Bush's same lack of experience or Ronald Reagan's lack. And for all of those who will go on their little temper tantrums about "giving in to dictators" talking to them is called diplomacy. I have paid for my own insurance out of my pocket since I was 19. So what do I get for being a responsable person? Nothing but everybody else out there who chose to be irresponsable will be given free health care makes me wonder why I worked my butt off all those years. Ray, any portion of insurance that the employer pays is considered, by the employer as part of the employees salary. Translation - if the employer has to pay $10,000.00 a year for insurance for an employee, they are going to pay that employee $10,000.00 less. Taxes, insurance, workers compensation, etc. are all figured into the cost of an employee. At the company I used to work for, I had to do monthy reports for the true costs of employees and it included all of those mentioned in addition to their salaries. When review time came, I would do reports including pay raises at different rates so the owner could look at those figures before he made a decision to offer salary increases, not just what the salary was.
Once again I'll state: what would a world look like if all our dreams came true, or even just one per person. There is no room here for your dreams or mine. It's all a set up to get more of any efforts you make. I by no means want to step on any ones tail, but if you keep buying the American dream, well stop off and buy that bottle of wine for that homeless person so they can escape another day-our reality.
For example I had a dream that I would grow up and get stuck paying blood sucking leaches for the rest of my life for everything I might need. The reality is we struggle all our lives and wind up with a little monthly check, if we may survive to see that. Facts are that our freedom as we put it, set us up for this and put an end to being neighborly with one another. All hail the almighty dollar right.

Lots of folks pay for the employee portion of their health insurance, but there's a lot more cost than that. Self -employed people pay all of their own prremiums. It is no badge of honor to proclaim that you have been suckered into paying excessive premiums during the past 10 years.
Back to the topic - this country should be proud to have a Nobel Prize winner. Congratulations President Obama! Still much to get done, but don't let the "nadering nabobs of negativism" slow you down. They are just jealous.

Failed "cash for clunkers" was actually a success in the Obama Adminstration. Where we see failure, he sees success, because our goals are not the same. He is already circumventing the Constitution with his czars. Look at the czars and their backgrounds. They would never be allowed to serve the American people, if their radical agendas and backgrounds were known. They would not even pass a security clearance. This is a coup, people. Now that is not only a pretty silly post, but factually inaccurate. First, neither the medals nor the money has even been presented yet. Second, as is almost traditional, the money will be going to charity. The Obamas hardly needed another million dollars (approximately $1.4 US actually) before his presidential campaign began, which is practically a requirement for anyone who ends up in our presidential elections, so I don't think this is really such a big deal.
All the diplomacy talks are showing to be failures if you read the news today. May be that the prize was for the biggest coward to apologize to the world and show no leadership skills at all. Heil Osama Obama! Hope he rezipped up the flies after his negotiations with the terrorist world.

I'm sorry that you guys disagree with my opinion.
I never said that veterans have never disagreed with a President's policies. Obviously, somewhere around half of the soldiers in every war we've fought as a country don't agree with the policies of the President they're fighting for.
However, the President of the United States IS the Commander-In-Chief. This means he's the highest level of military authority in the country. No, I have never served in the military. But many of my close friends have, and every last one of them, male or female, Democrat or Republican, have an ingrained respect for the current President due to the title he holds.
Obviously, Pat G's slandering of Obama, does not in any way, shape, or form reflect that respect you typically see in a military veteran. And many times on message boards I have run across so called "veterans" who, when questioned further, have little or no idea of military process, or even the War in which they claim to have served!
So I just put two and two together.

If Obama were a real man he would recognize that he has done nothing to deserve the award and refuse it. He however is so full of himself that it will never happen. This just cements my disdain on the issue. This travesty is a slap in the face of a man like Martin Luther King, Mandella or Ghandi and others that have really sacrificed for their beliefs. Obama has done absolutely nothing and has not sacrificed anything and does not deserve this award.

I kinda like Obama, not a huge fan but I think he's better than the last guy, but has he really affected that much change in regards to world peace. I mean he says things that people (including me most of the time) like to hear, but has he really backed up that talk (I know this is not entirely his fault, as other members of the government don't always agree with him).
Seems like the noble prize should have higher standards than that. But then Al Gore won one for making a movie about being environmentally friendly while consuming more than 10 times the average American's energy use just to power his home.
America is once again admired in the world (not to mention by many Americans of all colors and social classes). The difference, the only difference, between now and a year ago is OUR President.

I too have lived and worked overseas and still have contact with folks there. Internationally, Obama is respected for his serious efforts to improve international relations. He has already accomplished much, and will more so during his presidency.
People overseas are well educated, especially in history, and recognize what it takes to lead well. They are also more patient. Government is a process, not a checklist. They recognize that his influence has changed the tone globally -
All are seen as positive by the world community - because it shows strength and an ability to reconnect with traditional American morality on global issues.
We should be proud that we finally have a president again that the world respects.

As an American i am not proud of a president that would vilify our country and promote Socialism and maybe even Fascism as an alternative to our Democratic Republic and Constitution. Obama is offering peace through appeasement and surrender to enemies of the United States. If you recall most of the people of Europe and other parts of the world would be under the control of Nazi Germany right now if it were not for the efforts and blood of the people of the USA.. If President Obama even accomplishes only a mere 20% of what his goals are, then yes by all means the man is deserving of the prize at some point in the future. But simply talking about your goals lowers the standing of the award. Of course I feel cheated I didn't win because only last night I was talking about my new proposed biological invention: the cure-all hybrid tree. I envision it growing money as needed for those deserving. It will cure any illness. When consumed it will prevent racism, hatred, envy, fighting, poverty. It will be available free to all. It will create peace and it will instantaneously reverse global warming while also serving as a fuel to create pollution free energy. There..... I just solved everything just by talking about it. We had a President who took action and stood by his choices. He may not have been pretty or fancy speeking, but, he made choices and stood by his word. We, also, have had more people die in Afghanistan since Obama took over than any other previous year.
The Nobel Peace Prize became a joke when President Carter and his good buddy Yassar Arafat got the award. It is now a bigger joke. At least Obama told the truth when he said "I do not deserve this award." This prize has lost all meaning now and doesn't mean anything anymore.
