The United States and Russia, which have already weathered a difficult period in bilateral relations due to disagreements over the U.S.-led war with Iraq, are at odds again over what to do about Iran. The Americans say they suspect that, rather than innocently building a nuclear power station, the Iranian government is using the Bushehr nuclear project — to which Russia is supplying critical assistance — as a pretext for a nuclear-weapons-development program. The Kremlin denies this, and says what is really in play is a U.S. desire to use the issue as leverage against Russia in asserting its own selfish interests. No one can know which is true — possibly both are — but one thing is certain: In the present state of world affairs, stemming proliferation of weapons of mass destruction is a critical issue, and one should be draconian in making sure it does not take place.

American and British credibility has suffered a serious blow in the eyes of the rest of the world because of the issue of whether Iraq had large stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction — or had even destroyed them in an effort to ward off attack. This issue has been complicated by an admission by U.S. officials that the threat from such weapons had been exaggerated in order to rally support for its war. Whatever the truth turns out to be, however, most people can agree that nonproliferation of such weapons should be at or near the top of the geopolitical agenda. No one wants nuclear material, much less a nuclear weapon, to fall into the hands of an Osama bin Laden or Shamil Basayev.

Iran at present has a reformist president, Mohammed Khattami, who has long tried to both liberalize his society and open it up to the Western world. And he is a popular leader, having been reelected by some 80 percent of the population. However, his power and that of his supporters is held in check by a rabidly conservative class of theocrats who have real control of the government.

Iran itself is unlikely to use a nuclear weapon (except possibly in self-defense). It is also quite possible that the Iranian powers-that-be in charge of the Bushehr project have no intention of using the power plant as cover for a nuclear-weapons program. That is not the issue. The real matter for concern is whether nuclear materials or weapons might be passed on to some other party by someone in the Iranian government sympathetic to their cause. That is where the real danger lies, and that is why we must be staunch in our opposition to proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the strictest way possible.

The world already has one Islamic Bomb, in Pakistan, built up under the eyes of the Americans with the help of the Chinese and the North Koreans. Admittedly, Pakistan is in far worse shape than Iran is, and it is far more sympathetic to extremist Wahhabism, what with Islamist extremists in leading positions in both the armed forces and secret services and a history of sponsoring groups like the Taliban. Nevertheless, the idea of an Islamic Bomb 2.0 is not a pretty one.

In short, Russian aid for the Bushehr nuclear program should be curtailed. But it should not stop there — both China and North Korea must stand down from their history of assisting in such programs. The world is at a serious juncture, and the staked are high. It is always better to err on the side of caution.

Doug, you might want to get your facts straight too.  Start with something called the Iran-Contra affair.  I believe it was all the rage during the 80's.  A very important feature of the affair was that Israel sold or caused to be sold to Iran all manner of weapons.  And since I will assume that by psychopaths you mean the theocracy of mullahs, then yes they were already in charge.  A good question to ask then, is why would the Israelis sell arms to the country that would want to wipe them off the map?  Get this right and you get a gold star.

If you watch Iran political media (for which is as about as corrupt as ours) Lebanon just made a weapon deal through Iraq with China. Iraq stated America refused to sell weapons to them due to the fact they feel we would use them on Isreal. They also just opened another fuel deal with China and just meet with Brazil yesterday. Richie/Howard, the US will NOT use nukes. This president will NOT put his name on the same page as Truman. Truman had a legitimate reason to use nukes on Japan; it stopped the killing of millions and millions of Americans and Japanese, when carpet bombing was the skills of war. Nukes would produce so much collateral damage that he wouldn't think of using them. The possibility of one innocent person getting injured or killed is the justification he will use to not end the war with one stroke. He would rather prolong the war, watch millions of innocents and military on both sides die,and, he won't see the advantage of stopping the war with one bomb. The scariest future scenario could be Iran making a sale to a radical Islamic group (al-Queda is a Sunni group so they would be an unlikely customer) for a take out delivery (to guess who?).

Israel has not threatened to wipe another country off the face of the earth and does not believe that they should be personally responsible for triggering Armageddon. To my knowledge they have never gone around boasting about all the centrifuges they have running 24/7 either.

These nations are NOT morally equivalent. Furthermore, Israel is an ally and Iran hates us with a passion. Finally, while many would strongly protest a strike on Iran, most would secretly like it since they feel threatened by Iran's behaviour as well.
