What do you really know about Iran? Do they pose a threat to the u.s.? If so, how? What countries have they invaded? Who in that region has nuclear weapons but has refused to sign the non-proliferation treaty and fulfill its entry requirements to the UN, for more than 60 years? Does your knowledge of history only go back to the hostage crisis? If it is our obligation to right perceived wrongs done to people by their government, shouldn't we start with the largest offenders, like China, Russia or Cambodia?
We are supposed to export democracy, according to current foreign policy, even though we are a constitutional republic. You may say, "but Iran supports Hammas and Hezboula." Both were democratically elected with elections that were much more scrutinized than our own. Isn't democracy what we want? Heck, Hamas was a product of the CIA and Mossad to counter the PLO.
So what is to be accomplished, for the u.s., by engaging Iran?
Well... Iran sees that North Korea's Planned worked so well against Bush to enrich Plutonium for 6 years to get the bomb and another 2 years to acquire enough weapons grade plutonium for 8-20 warheads or Bombs... I guess NK is a good role model for any country looking to get nuclear weapons.... Hell it never occurred to Bush to bomb the single Russian reactor 6 years or even 4 years ago... Now if there is a conflict with NK it will surely be Nuclear and Millions will die vs thousands in a conventional war...

You do realize that the US and Iran have been at war for many years... It's been a proxy war... Proxy wars are fought when the two sides think that open war is too risky.... Iran has been waging proxy war In all of the Iraq wars and the Afghanistan war... And the USA has been doing the same by backing groups who attack Iran...
The point you are seeing here is that it's becoming a very dangerous game.. And the clock is ticking and Iran is either trying to buy time to get the bomb or is considering options vs open war... And believe me that open war isn't going to be pretty should it occur...

The only way to prevent someone from developing the bomb who really wants it is for us to go in and fight a very nasty war, which would in turn convince everyone else about why they need the bomb. Its a no-win situation.

Very little of our money has been used to protect our soldiers, so Ted Kennedy passed a bill to provide body armour for the foot soldier. Look at how our soldiers are treated when they return home injured or emotionally crippled. There is the highest incident of suicide correlated between the soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, than ever documented.

I didn't think this from whole cloth but from philosophers much smarter than me, including the founding farthers. The founders that are portrayed to my 11 year old son as racist oppressors are the ones that instituted the only free society known to man. Yeah there were many bad things that happened, but the frame work, the architecture still remains. I believe in individual liberty as given to us by our creator and not collectivism. I do not pretend to be a politician, nor do I pretend to have the answer to this issue. The 7 year war they had and the one before that and the one before that seemed to be to no avail. Millions of innocent people lost their lives because of the idiocy of the governments. Some say to let Iran have their Nukes, other say no. Yet others say destroy them and use the same weapons we are telling the world not to use. I did like the comment about the cold war and the USA vs USSR..Yet thereto it was the threat of knowing that either of the two powers could destroy the other and there were no winners (WAR GAMES) In that situration it was the mere time of 15 minutes befor nuclear holocaust. This was the Cuban Blockade...1962. Had the Soviet ship not turned around; 3400 Marines were already in the water to invade Cuba from the South West; and 5800 Army on the north end. Give peace and diplomacy a chance; when it is clearly evident that these means will not work then make the sacrifice. BUt, send the old men and women to fight...not the young boys and girls.
