He sounds like a textbook example of a schizophrenic. Contrary to popular folklore, schizophrenia is NOT split personality disorder. People afflicted with this disease commonly hear voices, talk about unintelligible gibberish (like his box for talking to God), and suffer from a "disconnect" with reality. Also known as dissociative personality disorder...
I imagine that various people with their own agendas are going to equate this to:
LSD use = kidnapping psycho
Or almost as bad:
religious nut = kidnapper/child molester
And having known a few schizophrenic people, I can assure you, neither had a hand in this monster's problems...he would have turned out this way even if he chose to be a Buddhist/pacifist that was addicted to ice cream...
I feel so terrible for his victims. They lost a significant portion of their lives thanks to this nutcase, and won't be able to live normal lives for decades. I can only imagine the soul-penetrating joy the parents must have felt upon being able to reunite with their long lost daughter in the flesh after so many uncertain years....
Atheist myself, so I won't say "May God be with them", but I echo the same sentiments: I wish them long life and happiness from this point forward.
The Contra Costa police department seriously needs to re-evaluate thei system though if a registered sex offender on parole can have a compound of tents in his backyard for two decades and not get caught.....maybe the cops ought to stick to issuing petty traffic violations. That is what they seem to be best at....
Yet another case (there are so many) indicating rapists should not ever be released. Creepy Phil was "released" early in 1988, and abducted Jaycee just 3 years later, swell. There is no such thing as reforming a sex offender. Life in prison or the death penalty, one or the other.
All this time he was being "supervised" by a parole officer. This should tell the public that when a rapist/sex offender is released in their neighborhood, be concerned; the authorities will never protect them. A case for taking matters into our own hands? I think so.
Just like an Atheist to over analyze the situation, hoping that if we just give the guy a lollipop that he'll be ok. He uses religion to mask the truth of his being a sick sadistic individual. If this man felt the love of God in his heart, he would have never harmed any child. I'm not an atheist, but still i question anyone who claims to be "holy" and i keep my guard up, as should all people who have seen the true evils of the world. It's a mask not unlike the one Obama used to get elected while hiding his true agenda. Would Dr. Atheist call his "Messiah" a schizophrenic for calling himself a Christian while attending a hate filled church in Chicago? Get a grip. Evil is not erased nor cured with a happy pill. Some people need to be fried on the electric chair, plain and simple.
Lisa Campbell must be congratulated for her keen eye and remarkable intuition. It was she that sensed that something was not right and then, took the initiative to follow-up on her suspicions.
Jaycee is still programmed and will need to be deprogrammed by an expert psychologist in that field. Once deprogramming is accomplished, Jaycee's healing can begin, her life sorted, and pieced back together as well as can be accomplished under the circumstances.
This all brings to mind a similar scenario that took place in Austria. It was well-watched in the news for several weeks, and just a couple of years ago. In that case the slaver-rapist preyed on his own daughter.
So, it would seem that Garrido stands accused of all, save incest.
i won't comment on the role of either religion or drugs, but this individual does indeed manifest signs of schizophrenia. my guess is he will be found unfit to stand trial, and committed long term. there has been very little information provided on the part the wife took in all this, so her future remains to be seen.
here in maryland, the news is that at least one state inpatient facility is to be closed as a budget measure. (our state constitution requires a balanced budget annually.) this almost certainly means that some seriously psychotic people will be put on the street. scary!
Yes, due to budget cuts, we're going to start releasing prisoners... and mental ward patients...
We'll still have money enough to put great big hunks of twisted metal on the court house lawn and call it "Art" - but for legitimate functions of government, like keeping us safe in our streets .. not so much.
" Mysteryofsteel"....What are your credentials??? My guess is none since you have no idea what you're talking about in relationship to a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
What I find most disturbing about this story, is the fact that, authorities would NEVER have found this man, even though he was on parole, until he walked through the door and confessed. I'm confused as to what our police forces find important and how the hell are they trained.
They taser a grandma and school children yet can't find these kids IN THE BACK YARD!!! Give me a break.
Let's admit it we failed that little girl the prole officer never checked anything a policemen never took the time to check the complaints that was called in. As for allowing prisons and the mental Illness out to early. Because of lack of money. This would not be happening if society would learn. Forgiveness, most who are in prisons if they could find a job to sustain themselves instead of selling drugs would not be there but because of non forgiveness which states if you have a felony you cannot work and take care of yourself here! Stop most people that they will allow for eerily out are those who either sell drugs or do drugs. Two different things. Could have saved money if everybody was not considered something to keep other with a job!
Just like an Atheist to over analyze the situation
What?
Okay, yeah, I can be lazy like a Christian and just be satisfied with "Goddidit" as my explanation for everything I see...
And to think, this Dr. Atheist was being a good sport; knowing that the message board was about to be flooded with scores of "strong atheists" wanting to blame this on the church (because Garrido was a religious nut), I preempted that and made it clear that religion had nothing to do with this guy's horrible actions...and this turd responds with his/her/its fanatical religious vitriol.
hoping that if we just give the guy a lollipop that he'll be ok.
Please show me where in my original post where I said we should just give him a lollipop? I thought Christianity teaches to "turn the other cheek", so I thought that would be your shtick, buddy.
I think this Garrido guy is sick and cannot be rehabilitated. He AND his wife should be cordoned off from society for the remainder of their existence. At least Garrido will have God to kep him company, talking through his little schizo-box...
He uses religion to mask the truth of his being a sick sadistic individual.
Or, like many of the Christians like you-- he is overcompensating for his own self-realized inadequacies and self-punishing by adhering to a strict, extremist religious doctrine.
If this man felt the love of God in his heart, he would have never harmed any child.
Are you trying to say that no blood has ever been shed for God in human history? Are Christians suddenly above reproach or error?
I'm not an atheist, but still i question anyone who claims to be "holy" and i keep my guard up, as should all people who have seen the true evils of the world.
Agreed 100%, not because I am a "pinko heathen" as your type would probably refer to me as, but because I also realized that folks who go out of their way to put on a big facade, are usually overcompensating for something that they feel guilty or inadequate about.
It's a mask not unlike the one Obama used to get elected while hiding his true agenda. Would Dr. Atheist call his "Messiah" a schizophrenic for calling himself a Christian while attending a hate filled church in Chicago?
How did you jump from talking about a registered sex offender to...O'Bama? That's quite a leap, friend.
The only "mask" O'Bama needed to get elected was to demonstrate that he would do things better than the last, failed and embarrassing administration.
And by the way, Dr. God, I didn't even vote for O'Bama. I just don't let bitterness cloud my vision like you do. I wasn't for him at first, but he is turning out to be a good President. I don't like the way he always supports minorities without question (like the whole "They acted stupidly" thing), and mind you, I am half Korean, half Italian/Scottish. But he has a consituencey to please, just like any other President for oh, the last couple hundred years.
Get a grip. Evil is not erased nor cured with a happy pill.
Who said evil can be cured with a "happy pill"? Why do you have to keep inventing words to put in my mouth, only to criticize your own misrepresentations?
I noticed that the uber-Republican types seem to have this problem-- misrepresenting their opposition, and then clobbering their own fallacies and then patting themselves on the back for it. Like the whole health care reform debate-- not one of the arguments against it actually addresses anything the reform is actually calling for. "Death panels for grandma" and whatnot-- is that the best they can do?
As always, education trumps propaganda. Try actually reading up on what the reforms are calling for, and then decide if any of the counterarguments actually hold any water, or if they are simply arguing against things that the reform does not even specify.
Some people need to be fried on the electric chair, plain and simple.
Lethal injection would be my choice. It gets rid of him humanely, guarantees that us taxpayers aren't going to be paying for his meals and facilities for the next 40 years, and it keeps society safe from an individual that cannot be rehabbed.
Not surprised to hear an uber-Christian neo-con wanting to "fry someone on the electric chair, plain and simple"-- atrocities like being burned at the stake, the vaginal pear of anguish, and the breaking wheel might be 200 years behind most of us, but for the "fire and brimstone" crowd that stuff is all just a simple urge away...
Funny that you chose to go on a diatribe about being weary of "holier than thou" people masquerading as Christians, while ignoring the most important Christian principle of them all: compassion.
Keep praying, buddy. In a few years, maybe you'll be making little boxes to talk to God with, like Garrido....you seem to think you are better than all of us.
Please stop the personal debates over other issues. This is about a child that was monstrously abused.. It is about other children who may have been abducted and raped and killed. It is about the life long mental problems the young woman and her children and her parents and siblings will have. Garrido and his wife should be put to death. Quite simply, they are monsters who hurt and murder children. It's not about anyone's religion, religions, politics or to make any poster an internet star. Focus people--Have some compassion for the victims in this story. .
ive had some experience with a schizophrenic. harmless guy. he laughed alot when he wasnt on his meds. he said the voices told him jokes. the real problem with schizophrenia is it affects the brains "diagnostic systems". many afflicted do not believe there is anything wrong with them.
Ditto! Can't say it any better than you just did. I am telling you, that I am in tears for everyone concerned and can't even begin to imagine their pain. It's just hard to believe that time after time and crime after crime, these poor creatures have slipped through the cracks. How does this happen???????
the point is if we read the entire story the Police Screwed up big time and there should be a really big lawsuit lodged for dereliction of duty . the police had a duty to investigate and had the authority to enter that mans home due to the fact he was on parole, but maybe his coffee was getting cold ??
GC83, you stupid bastard, this isn't about Obama! It's about a girl who was kidnapped by some cheap @!$%#, who consequentially should immediately be thrown into a hole and buried alive with his sorry ass excuse of a wife who was just as much a part of this as him.
So take your political bull@!$%# (a la Rush Limbaugh) and jump off a cliff somewhere. Do us all a big favor. And no, I didn't vote for Obama. Nor did I vote for McCain. Think about it...
I am a survivor of rape, for 2 1/2 yrs. I was the a victim of my father's. After his release I lived in fear for my life for many years, until I found out that he was dead and had been for 2 yrs., at that time. The reason I had to find out for myself after a lot of digging, Texas dropped the ball. The officers in Amarillo (where he was supposed to be) never went out and verified his address, a registered sex-offender on parole. After I found him dead in Arizona they weakly appologized and gave a lame excuse about inadequate staffing. I agree that staffing is inadequate in many police departments, but not in numbers, but in intelligence. I have known many parole and peace officers that would go out of their way to check up on a sex offender in their areas, a couple of them helped me find a sex-offender that was not in their area.
It is time for victims of sex offenders with stories where law enforcement failed them to find lawyers and start filing class-action lawsuits. It is time to DEMAND longer MANDATORY sentences that make NO room for early release. If they wish to find God they can do it behind bars. I am personally all for the death penalty, but I understand where that could be unreasonable. Each state as well as the federal government should be held accountable for their negligence. I understand that until the crime is commited there is nothing to be done. But there is NO excuse for KNOWING that someone is an offender and allowing them to fall through the cracks. This whole story could have been avoided, and because of this cutback or that cop not wanting to stay late on his/her shift filling out a report he was set free AND ALLOWED to do this heinous act to this young woman.
The chief of police says that they are beating theirselves up. WHATEVER!!!!!! I hope that the people of Antioch run you all out of town, parole officers too. I hope that when you apply for a new job and they see anything on your resume in law enforcement in that town for the last 18 years they arrest you for imitating a peace officer. Embarassed should not even begin to cover how they should feel. THEY FAILED!!!!!! Completely and utterly, they failed. If I were Jaycee's mother or step-father I would hold the state and local officials COMPLETELY responsible. They are the ones that allowed Garrido to touch their lives, they are the ones that FAILED time and time and time again to end her captivity and their hell. SHAME on all of you that failed this young woman and her family, that could have been YOUR daughter. So go home and watch your daughter and hug her and tell her how much you love her and remember how utterly you failed Jaycee. May you always feel incredible remorse everytime you look at her or hear her voice. You are as guilty as Garrido, you helped him hold Jaycee captive.
It is time for the state and federal governments to be made responsible and the only way to do it is to call them to court. It is time for their to be serious punishment for sex offenders that is upheld and maybe even serious consequences for those that neglect to do their jobs, directly allowing a sex-crime to be commited.
You are dumb, this guy is crazy and white you need to regulate your white males. This will save your children. Why are you sticken up for this guy? You probably have a couple of little girls in your back yard. I have already called the FBI, so you better let them go.
Phillip Garrido, 1554 Walnut Avenue, Antioch, CA 94509. Look up the address on www.google.com (maps). See all the blue tents in the back. His house is actually on of the best looking houses on this street. There seem to be others on the next street living in tents too, so where does the neighbor have reason to ask why this guy has tents in his back yard? The whole neighborhood looks kind of strange. Look on the north end of this street (the first property south of Santa Fe Road - 1464 Walnut Avenue - the place on the left, set way back off of the street next to the swimming pool. At first is seemed there is some possibility this looked like the suspect property.) Also see: www.meganslaw.ca.gov/. Check the box at the bottom of the home page. Do a search under "Name": Garrido, Phillip. It's all there. [Oh, don't worry. The guy is not home any longer; he is down in the slamer for sure - this time!]
You are absolutely correct. The judicial system, in this case, was a complete series of ineptitude.
It is a shame it only took how many ruined lives (the mother ultimately divorced her then-husband) before this monster was caught? Perhaps this time, the stupid judge or parole board will keep him his entire sentence.
Here is the punishment. 6 lashes for every day he held her captive. Second six electric shocks to his personal area for every time he violated her.
Then once that punishment is complete, public hanging to be televised as a warning to all the other sex offenders who have or are contemplating anything similar.
If you think this is to extreme, put yourself in her position and then live every minute of every day she had to endure it and then picture your 10 year old daughter in the same situation.
Mystery of Steel - I like what you wrote, and I also agree with atedeschi. I am just so pleased that so many people are as outraged about this situation. The ignorance of this all, is unsettling.
WHATEVER THIS GUYS PERSONAL DEMONS AND ITS OBVIOUS HE HAS A FEW; WHEN WILL THE POLICE START DOING THEIR JOB.here is a prime case where the people of this community were doing their jobs and voicing concerns about strange activity from this guy.they reported the tents in the back and yet the officer who responded stayed on the front porch i would almost say like he would have confessed but thats exactly what he did.its stories like these and others that keep the don't snitch and stay away from police movement alive why call the police if you are not even sure they are going to do anything at all.funny white guy kidnaps and rapes for 20 years without law enforcement batting an eye but black proffesor tries to get in home in a white neighborhood gets arrested i ask you what is the real reason this crime took so long to unearth
This guy had only been out three years and lived less than 200 miles from where Jaycee was abducted! If the people charged with investigating her disappearence from the start had been worth a $#!* he should have been a prime suspect...granted the database has probably improved quite a bit since then, but to me this just seems like nobody made a serious effort. Maybe if it had been their daughter they would have seen it as more then just some paperwork to pass along.
For reals.....a parole officer even visited the house after being tipped off about children in his backyard. If it weren't so pathetic and sad, it would be laughable....
I wonder if the law enforcement in that town is embarrassed. For 18 years this girl has been in their community basically right under their noses and she was not discovered by them. I think they need to do some house cleaning.
Garrido should have never been let out on early release! Jaycee's life has been destroyed not to mention the two girls lives. Jaycee does not know her mother anymore. The life she once knew is no more. Her mother & stepfather are no longer together. Her friends are all grown up. She will need a lot of counseling and she will probably never be "normal." Then there are her two children, she has a bond with them. They are all she knows, she is all they know "their sister." Those kids lost what they thought was their mother and father (as sick as that is) and their sister. What a f*cked up mess!
Garrido: Oh, no there are no little girls here officer.
Officer: OK sir, I'll take your word for it that there are no kids here. I find investigative work is best done by talking. I don't want to invade your happy home.
The word of a rapist is good enough for me. Everyone deserves a second chance. Fix up those tents.
"The tents might be a codes violation" But then the codes department never followed up on it. Had they done so, they would have found Jaycee and the girls.
I have a house on my street that has had codes violations for years and codes has been called by all the neighbors and they never respond, I suspect because all the occupants are illegal. Just yesterday I was walking my dog and a Mexican woman had a little boy about 4 or 5 years old, outside the house, and was washing him down with a wash cloth and hose. The child was completely naked. I didn't know what to do...call the police...so I did nothing. Even if I called the police, they wouldn't do anything.
There is something seriously wrong with policing in our society. A Harvard professor is taken from his own home in handcuffs, after the police finds out he was trying to get into his own home. This evil child molester is given a pass by police who visit his home ... 3 people suffer because of their negligence.
Regarding the police, I am reminded of Jeffrey Dalmer here. The police had encountered one of his victims who was running in the street. He was a male Cambodian minor. Dalmer spoke with the officers who were assured it was just a lovers spat. You know the rest of the story. Hopefully this couple will receive the same prison justice too.
I am thankful that Jaycee and her children survived to begin their recovery.
There are many questions about this guy. I wonder where he worked or who supported his lifestyle. Also, why was one policeman, who was untrained in investigations and without preparation about this guy's background, sent to investigate him?
Read the article again. He was not a printer, he bought business cards from the printer. It was unclear so I read it again. It says he brought the box, that had God's voice inside, into the shop.
He was not a printer and he bought business cards and supplies from a guy that owned a printing business. I guess you didn't read the article, did you. I wish people would actually comprehend what they read before they go making a rude reply on people great posts.
It is a great question what he did for a living?
I want to know what he did that he needed business cards printed and if the materials were related to his sicko obsession with religion and sex then maybe that should have sent off red flags!
Garrido did own a printing shop. According to one of Garrido's customers, a glass and window shop owner named Tim Allen, Garrido brought the "God box" into his own (Garrido's) printing shop. The customer, Mr. Allen, was shown the box when he went into Garrido's shop to pick up his business cards. Also, several other news reports have mentioned Garrido having a printing business. Jaycee herself allegedly even helped him with the business, providing design work.
Religion rants had become increasingly common for Garrido. Tim Allen, president of East County Glass and Window Inc., heard them frequently as he came to know Garrido when he bought business cards and letterhead from his printing business. (The bolded "his" in the previous sentence is referring to Garrido. Tim Allen, owner of the glass and window company, bought business cards from Garrido's printing business. The writer of this story could have taken a bit more care to strive for better clarity in this instance, obviously.)
"Convicted sex offender released He was sentenced to 50 years for the kidnapping conviction and life for the rape conviction but was granted an early release in August 1988."
When we EVER learn? If the SOB had served his FULL sentence, this sorry story would NEVER have happened, and that little girl would have had a normal childhood, instead of the nightmare she endured!
AMEN !! If the judges would read, listen, and learn, they'd realize that pedophiles do NOT get better - ever. I say if a judge says it's ok to release a pedophile, then that pedophile either lives next door to him/her (if they have children young enough) or that pedophile gets to live next to the judge's grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or someone that judge cares deeply for. I'll bet you a year's pay that those criminals would stay right in the prisons or mental institutions they belong in !!
Let me temper this with the following statement though: we must have irrefutable evidence that the person is guilty. I have a good friend who was accused of a sex crime with a 12 yr. old and he was innocent. Unfortunately, he took a lighter sentence for fear that they'd dress the little ***** in a nice dress and have her lie so convincingly that he'd get triple the sentence that he served.
He wasn't a convicted pedophile, he was a convicted sex offender. According to the story, he had been convicted of kidnapping and raping a 25 year old woman
Fifty years PLUS a separate life sentence, and he got out in 10 years? I don't care if he specialized in raping children or women or both, the man should NEVER have gotten out based on his sentence - which obviously was tied to the severity of his crime. And he admitted to the cops then that he liked having sex by force...charming. Obviously he wasn't afraid to act on that, and how they concluded that after ten years in prison he would never act on it again, well...what a bunch of geniuses.
This poor girl has lost her girlhood, teenhood, her 20's. Imagine being stunted at 11, completely isolated, being raped repeatedly and becoming a mother TWICE when mentally and emotionally you are still pre-pubescent, and you probably remain that way as long as you are captive. It's utterly disgusting what he did to her and her family. And obviously the daughters are equally stunted and mentally/emotionally messed up.
Stories like this make me want to scream - lock this sick monster up and throw away the key.
Just think, with California's budget problem, they are threatening to release many more prisoners early. Watch out America, your problems just got worse. Thanks, California.
AGAIN, if this man had not been released(life for rape),this would never of happened! How many lives has he ruined? First the woman he kidnapped and raped years ago(and God knows how many others) Jaycee, her parents, her entire family, her girls, and who knows what his wife may have gone through also, even though she too, should be punished harshly. We can diagnose him all we want but, he stood trial years ago,and was competent to at that time.Usually schizophrenia starts showing up in the early 20's,some may go undiagnosed, but if this man was on trial then,I would think if he acted crazy his lawyer would have tried to get him declared incompetent. He needs to stand trial and get the death penalty, he is nothing but a waste of oxygen and deserves no mercy! I say we turn all the felons loose and send them to Afghanistan, front lines.
the Governor of Michigan where I live ordered bunches of prisoners let out early including about 300 sex offenders. ended up with public out cry they realized they made a mistake and had to round them all up again. but they did let a lot of prisoners out and are closing the prisons politicians have to protect their pocketbooks you know. our Governor is from Canada guess she couldn't make a go of it up there.
there are plenty of people out of work, we should stop sending money overseas to people who hate us, build more prisons, staff them and start getting rid of some of this scum. It makes me sick that the police didn't follow up on this guy. Sick, sick sick.
Great idea about letting the sex offenders live next to the judges/their lawyers, that would stop alot of this crap.
Yes, yes, yes! We suffer greatly when mentally defective people roam the streets. The only acceptable kindness for these unfortunate souls is permanent jail or secure mental institutions. They must be medically treated in secure institutions, forever, or incarcerated, forever--no other possible solutions.
Personally, I am in full support of tent prisons. Why should a prisoner live better than me. One prison in Texas provides work in a cotton field for those that wish to earn a better than minimum 3 meals a day. Those inmates generate enough income for the prison to maintain it. Prisoners should NOT recieve paychecks, PERIOD. If a dog had doone what this man did he would be euthanized; but then a dog wouldn't do this.
Foe the short time that Texas determined my father needed to be in prison (6 months) he generated income. He was a lazy piece of crap at home but in prison he made a living.
Here is my budget fix. In my state it is legal for me to carry a concealed weapon. Hell, I can hold my shotgun every morning when my daughter gets on the bus, at my yard. If you are a pedophile and reading this, come to my yard. They will only scrape up what the buzzards and coyotes don't eat. Lawmakers would really take notice if parents were standing at the bus stop with their guns every morning and afternoon to protect their children getting on and off the bus. Imagine the outcome if Mr. Probyn would have had his .270 in his hands that morning. Me, I lived enough years in fear of my abuser (that the state of Texas could not and would not locate) that I am a VERY good shot. I am not supporting or promoting vigilantism, but I intend to protect my own and any other child within my sphere of action. Deadly force is the only way to insure that these animals do not continue to impose their atrocities on our neighborhoods and our children. EUTHANASIA!!!!!!!!!! bty that is still too good for them
Thanks to an overabundance of lawyers, society is now too controlled by complicated laws and strict rules than say, 20 years ago. This is causing employees to be paranoid and nonfunctional in their jobs, and they're actually becoming worse at performing their jobs. I see this all over, people turning into robots.
They're overwhelmed by all the rules, so fearful of a misstep that would trigger a lawsuit that they can't use their common sense anymore. They've been programmed to think inside the box.
Karen - to a certain extent we can accept your analysis, but then look at the two college campus workers. They weren't "overwhelmed by all the rules, so fearful of a misstep." People need to use common sense and have some curiosity when 2 + 2 does not add up to 4. Authorities knew there were tents in the backyard and other little buildings. They should have wondered about that. Having to work within the scope of laws and regulations shouldn't have stopped the authorities from doing their jobs and having a little savvy. How good is it for lawa-abiding citizens if the police have no gut feeling about crimes.
A couple of years ago, when my daughter was around 3 she had a propensity for throwing these hysterical screaming fits. She did something to her brother, I do not even remember what and I put here in the corner. She was screaming like I had just beat the tar out of her. I sat down at my computer and went back to work on my schoolwork. By this time she is screaming so loudly and so much that she is turning an interesting shade of purple. I thought what the heck let her scream until she can't scream anymore, maybe then I might get a couple days of quiet (my son is the easy, laidback one). Then, came a knock on the door. I got up and answered and there stood one of our local sherrif's deputies and one of my neighbors. She had called 911 because she could hear my daughter from inside her home (yes it was THAT loud) and was concerned. The officer asked to see my children (my daughter was not screaming anymore at this point) and I invited them both in. The deputy took my daughter to the porch where I could see without being involved with thier conversation. He asked what was going on and she told him. Mind you, this young lady has been speaking clearly and forming sentences since she was like 13 months old. So she was able to give her rendition of the fight with her brother and what she had done to get into trouble. He asked why she was screaming and she said that she hated me because I had put her in the corner. He asked if I hurt her, she said no. After he questioned her, he came in and asked me a couple of questions and then told me what he had asked her and what her answers were. The neighbor apologized for the intrusion and said that she thought I must be a pretty patient mother to have listened to that screaming without losing my cool. I explained that I did not mind the questions simply because the woman was looking out for my kids even though she did not know them. Hell, for all she knew we could have all been getting slaughtered by a buglar or something and I told her thankyou. The deputy bent down, eye level, with my daughter and proceded to explain that her screaming like that is very serious and that she could have caused me to go to jail or someone to get hurt trying to save her when she was not hurt. He told her that screaming like that is for emergencies when someone is hurt very badly and she needs help. To this day, my daughter has yet to scream like that ever again.
My point is that I did not mind the "nosy" neighbor. She was concerned. Believe me, in my state of Texas you do not want CPS at your door. If you are innocent they will find a way to nail you; if you are guilty they do not bat an eye. If you are a doped up idiot that is in and out of prison they will find every excuse to keep you and your kids together, but if you are a hard-working law-abiding citizen they will not stop until they have ripped your life apart trying to come up with something. Good parents in this state walk around mortified that if they speak harshly or punish their kids in public that they will be taken away. In the meantime, the scum gets away with murder, literally.
There has always been the threat that if law enforcement is out of line in their treatment of a citizen they could face criminal and civil consequences. When will we finally start holding them responsible for NOT doing their job. This Dugard case was the last straw for me. I called a local pitbull of a lawyer that loves potentially explosive class action lawsuits. I also called the attorney general of Texas. We will see.
I don't know how to understand all this it's so very sad. I will keep them in my Prayers. That scum and his wife should not even see the light of day ever again.
Ive had nightmares more pleasant than this scenario! I`m not a "nosey neighbor" but I watch out for them and know them. I can`t understand how no one saw anything? I work on my roof periodically and glance around while taking 5 and can see into other yards.I don`t scope them out but a compound would get my attention. Being a watchdog is not snooping.
Most people don't work on their own roofs! Besides, if you read through the whole article, you will see that the strangeness of permanent tents in the backyard, a shower running, people living in the tents was indeed reported more than once, one neighbor could see it from her deck. The strangeness of this man rambling nonsense about sex, God, etc. was reported by a former neighbor and substandard investigations followed. One person who visited her parents in the neighborhood was well aware of the strange behavior of this man and the fact that he was raising children. However, she trusted in the probation officer, unaware that this person was performing his job robotically.
perect reflection of the majority of California's "bleeding heart lefties" who would allow their law enforcement and legal system to deteriorate to the point that they either didn't care....or can no longer think cognitively! OutRagious!!!!!
I agree most people don`t work on their own roofs and here in AZ. with swamp coolers we can be up there more, but someone has to do maintenance and repairs on the roofs.
if you're white you're all right if you're brown stick around but if you're black get back
Here comes the race card. Now you understand what black people mean about unequal scrutiny by law enforcement. Have you ever heard about a black man getting away with a crime like this? It would appear that the old Southern ditty is still in force in America, at least in the minds of law enforcement officers.
You can't cite the Patty Hearst affair, since that occurred during a period of civil unrest, and it was only after that period that the law even acknowledged, officially, that black people were constitutionally entitled to the same protections under the law. This has so far been honored by law enforcement, some claim, "more in the breach than in the observance."
Several years ago a researcher investigated work related stress for police officers by attaching them to some kind of portable pulsometer. In his data he casually noted, without follow up, that the pulse rate of almost all the officers was significantly higher in general when confronting a black person than when confronting people of other races. Most surprising was that this was true for black officers as well as whites.
Unfortunately there was no follow through to this observation since it was not the point of the research, but I'd like to see some further research on this disparity, since it would give us some insight in race relations in this country. It would also help to explain how blatant law breaking such as this can go on under the very noses of law enforcement time and time again. It's as simple as who gets the warning and who gets the ticket.
the pulse rate of almost all the officers was significantly higher in general when confronting a black person than when confronting people of other races
That should have read "when confronting a black male".
totally agree with the statements here. what immediately comes to mind is the skip gates case. everyone commenting here can castigate the police officers now but it was okay what they did to skip. the cop never even went in the house to check out the backyard. stayed on the porch.
sorry areo but i am white and i agree, this nut was given a pass because he was white and a religious nut...the police radar did not go up. he did not put out anything because he was talking to a male cop...not until he ran into a female cop did anything happen.
You are all wrong in this post. This guy was a CONVICTED RAPIST AND KIDNAPPER,HAD BEEN SINCE THE 70'S.
This is not about race or religion, it is about gross negligence and poor judgement by the entire justice system that had this guy by the balls for 18 years.
all these guys who are now saying we made a mistake or we neglicted to see this or were to over burdened with work, or underfunded, or had too many caseloads need to go down.
The Sheriff of this town, the Police Officer who visisted this guy,the Parole department who did nothing , the FBI who could not figure this out way back when a Guy with a Ford gredana who had commited the same crime in the same town before and could not put 2 + 2 together, all of them need to be fired, Immediately. They need to Beg for forgiveness and not be in ANY position that has them protecting the community.
If it were the Cop from the Gates case they would have discovered this crime long ago.
While I believe there are issues related to race, the judicial system, and law enforcement that need to be addressed, I have to agree with Hughsey. The fact that this animal was a convicted rapist should have had him flagged forever. We all know they do not get reformed. The authorities dropped the ball on this one. Wasn't there even a violation for which local authorities were called related to the animal's tents and out-buildings? There were plenty of missed opportunities here.
Another aspect is that these animals are often very convincing when dealing with people. Look at Ted Bundy. When they see that someone is going to question something they can be very good at manipulation. Bottom line, this animal was a sex offender and needed to be in the Nevada prison from which he was released 39 years too early from his conviction.
The people who came in contact with the girls should have been able to pick up on their behaviors. The college workers who saved them did. Not everyone is a professional, but some people saw them much more often and were too stupid to do something.
Most surprising was that this was true for black officers as well as whites.
This statement in and of itself should indicate there is more going on than white racist cops. Hello? I don't deny bigotry is still a big problem in America but it comes in all shapes and sizes and it is not always about race. Frankly, I am tired of people trying to find some racial catalyst for everything that goes wrong in their lives.
As for Phillip Garrido ... How did he evade notice by the police and by the P&P? People, in all walks of like, not just law enforcement, just don't care anymore. They do just enough to get by, to keep them under the management radar, just enough to keep them from losing their job. The officer from Probation and Parole went out to the house and talked to the parolee. He did his job. Period. Okay, so he did not actually investigate the household or look to see if the guy had a six-pack of Coors in the fridge (which would be a violation of parole). Knowing the guy had a history of drug abuse, he didn't bother to go in and see if Creep Phil had a box of pot stashed under the couch. All of that would have been too much trouble... too much like real work. The P&P officer just wanted to get the obligatory visit over with and get back to his air-conditioned office and play video games on his computer.
The police were no better. They ignored the danger signs, too, because they just had too much else to do and a cup of coffee was in the break room with their name on it. Even the neighbors chose to find some more innocuous explanation for people living in tents in the back yard rather than question why a house in their midst was a jungle where children played and people took showers and everything was so overgrown you couldn't even see what was there. It's easier on the conscience if you don't ask too many questions. You might not like the answers. Forty of fifty years ago, everybody in the neighborhood knew everybody else by name. They knew each other's children and, when your kids misbehaved there was always somebody's mother to keep them in line. Then it became, "Mind your own business," and kids had less guidance and the social problems grew as they grew. By the end of the 20th century, you didn't dare snatch up a kid and take him home to his parents for some egregious wrongdoing without risking being taken to court for assaulting their precious little brat! And the brat grew up to be a criminal or gang member because of it. Something is definitely wrong here and maybe it is time to become our brothers' keeper once again. Maybe we need to start reaching out a bit more, thinking about the other guy more and worrying about ourselves a little less. Maybe if some of the people in Garrido's neighborhood had done that, Jaycee Lee Dugard would have gone home to her parents a long time ago.
As the article states, the missed opportunities to discover Garrido's dirty little secret were many and it is easy for us to cluck our tongues and think how lazy, uncaring, racist, or whatever epithet suits you the police were in this case. But, while you are shaking your heads at how the police should be punished for not doing their job, take a moment to stop and think how many opportunities you might hae had this year/month/week to look further into some situation that might not have felt 100% right. Maybe it wasn't as front page as this case but maybe you missed the opportunity to make a big difference in someone else's life.
OK the president of the USA is black! What more do you people want? We had thousands of young healthy men die in the civil war to insure your freedom and there are none alive today that were effected by the whole slave thing anyway.
My Grandfather came here and was forced to work on a field for 25 years until they finally gave him two acres to own. He married a Full Blood Cherokee woman from OK. She had her entire Race almost wiped off the face of the planet and you guys are still complaining about race, race , race. When is enough going to be. When all people with white skin alive today are in-slaved? Most of which parents came here after slavery. Why should we suffer for what white people did that are not related or even remotely connecting with us did? You guys need to get your own place of origin under control. I mean you guys are killing millions because the are from a different tribe. Is that racial?
You have done much with your freedoms. You have robbed our children, hooked them on crack, turned them into prostitutes, completely made them forget what being white is. You have killed one another non-stop. You have rather than try to succeed used your color any chance you get to say " I did not get the job because, I did not get the college acceptance because, I did not get the loan because.......and on and on and on .......the race card lost all creditability the day President Obama was elected into office by white people! Deal with it , the race card is fail now!
Race or no race, how in the world does a probation and parole officer assigned to a convicted, registered sex offender never do a property search? It is called lazy county or state worker. I bet this could have been sloved in the first month had the officials done their job.
"Psychotic sex addict In November 2006, a neighbor called police and described Garrido as a psychotic sex addict who was living with children and had people staying in tents in his backyard.
A sheriff's deputy talked with Garrido a half-hour on his front porch, but he didn't enter the house or walk into the backyard. He left warning the tents could be a code violation. He did not know Garrido was a convicted sex offender even though his office had that information."
Maybe if he was a black professor at Harvard, when the officer showed up at his home from a tip from a neighbor, the officer would have pursued the situation vigorously. Demanded to see ID and called for backup searched the house and grounds and the girl would have been found back in 2006.
This guy did so much over the years to be caught, but because he is a white male law inforcement just let it ride.
No, you're a tool. Black man in the same situation would have gotten away the same. That professor aggravated the situation and berated the officers. I would have arrested him the same. This man was always calm, but a bit off.
Nothing to do with race, everything to do with demeanor and how well informed of the situation the cops are. People need to stop being racist. By that I mean both ways, accusing people of being racist and the actual racists.
I agree that it's arrogantly ignorant for the media to make statements that give the impression she may be at fault for being kidnapped, brainwashed and controlled by a wacked out pedophile and possibly psychopathic scum bag.
Garrido is still being investigated for a possible connection to the multiple homicides of some prostitutes in the past. It's a miracle she's still alive which could be due to the fact that she never attempted to escape or reveal her situation to anyone. Try thinking about that one MSNBC before making idiotic statements in an effort to grab the attention of readers.
jim, read lmarc's post...you can't be that dumb. and if you don't think that happens, don't you remember the kidnapping in the 60's...darn what was her name???? she became a bank robber with her kidnappers...it's a survival factor for them.
even this girls step father said so.
if you don't like msnbc...don't try to make stuff up.
Mystery of Steel- 1) It was an officer from the Sheriff's Department who spoke to Garridos concerning the tents. 2) The UC police contacted the Parole Agent and it was the PA who requested a meeting with Garridos in the parole office about his "daughters". The PA knew Garridos did not have any children.
Now check Google Earth for a more recent photo. The trampoline is missing from the neighbor's yard and a similiar one is now in the Garridos backyard. May be a coincidence but I find it very odd. Also, on the Zillow site, the property lines show the neighbor's yard ending at the same fence-line as Garridos' "front backyard". This, as well as the lack of a rear access gate, is probably why the PA did not know about the hidden yard, as it did not appear to be part of Garridos' property, not from the ground, at least. I'm sure Garridos put on a good show, was cooperative, and had not violated probation since the mid 1990's.
Speaking of coincidences, have you noticed that Terry Probyn was a graphic designer in a print shop when her daughter was kidnapped? And her daughter was a graphic designer in Garrido's print shop.
The authorties that did not recognize this horrible crime under their noses should be fired, no pensions, no nothing. California has the most lenient court system in the country next to Florida. You cannot be lenient with these prevents. You cannot allow time for good behavior. Now, California is considering allow l,000 out on paroll; someone must stop. When are people and the courts going to learn, THERE IS NO REHAB FOR THESE SCUMBAGS. It is inconceivable, that a woman would allow this to happen, and be aware the entire time. Justice should be delivered in prison for both of them, since the courts will not deliver punishment. This should a lesson, you cannot believe that cops are always performing their jobs.
Terri is right!! the guy had his yard fixed so that it ended just before the compound. It looked like the tents were over on the next persons yard.... Just looking into his back yard it looked unoccupied.
Perhaps when he was released there was no law to say the neighbourhood where he lived had to be informed thaty he was a sex criminal.. wasn't that law just brought in about 10 years ago??
Maybe if he was a black professor at Harvard, when the officer showed up at his home from a tip from a neighbor, the officer would have pursued the situation vigorously. Demanded to see ID and called for backup searched the house and grounds and the girl would have been found back in 2006.
Yes, maybe he would have been arrested, gone to trial and walked like OJ Simpson....
Jeannie...agree. Leo...I think Madoff pleaded guilty, didn't he? Either way it seems they had a paper trail a mile long on him.
In addition to having a lot of money, OJ also played the race card and won. And anyone who screams that the white cop set him up - well, I think since the murder OJ has proved his utter lack of morality and self-control. Wonder what happened to that big search he had planned to find the "real killers" went? Must have dropped the outline for it on a golf course somewhere.
Either way, I highly doubt he would have gotten off for those murders had he been white. He would have been convicted. He's where he needs to be finally - in prison. Karma's a b*tch.
"Having lots of money" didn't do Bernard Lawrence "Bernie" Madoff any good.
Clearly, the powers that be decided they were going to make an example of Madoff, so a super defense team wouldnt have helped him regardless.
Madoff may not have committed outright murder, but he truly destroyed the lives of myriad people who instead of having the financial strength to see their later years through, will now be dependent on family or welfare until they die. I hope his cancer can be treated just so he can have more time to languish in prison.
What gets me about this case, is that a pedophile got off on what should been a 50 year sentence. How does one evaluate good "behavior" for pedophiles in jail anyway, its not like there are kids around them there, since there are no kids of course they'll be well behaved in jail. He should have had the 50 year sentence, and not gotten off on "good behavior". Its no ones fault but the people who let him out too early after he was captured the first time
In his case, his mental illness would have been discovered and he would have gotten treatment in prison for schizophrenia. This man has two mental illnesses. He is a pedophile and he is schizophrenic, a double whammy. I can't remember reading about this combination of mental problems before this.
Okay people, this is aggravating me. Garrido IS NOT a pedophile, or rather he did not start that way. A pedophile is "an adult who is sexually attracted to young children." (dictionary.com) Almost every pedophile has an age range that they prefer. These age ranges are generally broken up into developemental brackets. His first "known" victim was a 25 year old woman. Here is my supposition. Garrido is a sadistic sex offender. He admitted to only being turned on when getting sex by force. I would assume that the reason he took Jaycee was simple deduction on his part. I am uncertain what took place to lead to his first arrest, but he probably felt safer taking her than another adult female, for whatever reason. His intent from the start was probably to take her and mold her into what he wanted her to be. Considering he had been in prison once before, had Jaycee so much as blinked wrong this story would be different. They would have reported finding her remains. He took her with the intent of grooming her into a sex slave and with the hopes of breeding more. I wonder if these were the only pregnancies she experienced? Is it possible she became pregnant on other occasions and he got rid of any boys? Those two girls were also amazing leverage against Jaycee. His biggest concern was not getting caught. His schizophrenia probably fed that fear to the point of him being unable to trust anyone he did not directly groom.
Another note. He is not suspected in the deaths of other children. He is being investigated over the murders of some missing prostitutes. Believe me, taking and keeping Jaycee will not be the only thing he did while on parole. Do not use his "illness" as an excuse. You can treat him today, but in 2 weeks when he feels like he does not need his meds anymore he will quit taking them. Not only that, but his schizophrenia has nothing to do with his sexual crimes. They are unrelated. Two completely different parts of the brain. You are gonna have to feed me something like multiple personality disorder order or something in that area for me to buy it.
One more, it was not a 50 year sentence that he got an early release from. It was a 50 year sentence AND a life sentence. How does that sit with you now? If I lived in California I swear to you that myself and many, many other sex crimes victims would have picket lines up and down the street in front of several courthouses, especially the one that houses the judge that released him.
I agree with the earlier post about putting these sickos in the neighborhoods of the judges that release them early.
Yes the media is really sinking low to try to portray this as a choice of Jaycees. She was kidnapped at eleven by a convicted rapist and raped and brainwashed on a daily basis. I doubt she would have willingly in HER RIGHT mind chosen to stay in a tent, with a man old enough to be her grandfather and continue to have babies without even being allowed to go to hospital. Its clear he picked a vulnerable child, took her to an isolated place, made her feel guilty for what happened, got her pregnant so that he could have a hold over her, and of course his wife (the "mother figure") helping him and making the kid feel guilty and at fault for what happened. Should been jailed the first time for 50 years, lets just hope he doesn't get out after 4 years for "good behavior" again
that's how brainwashing works...to the person that is undergoing it...it all sounds so reasonable. it's living in fear, and someone saying if you do this you wont live in fear.
when you hear something false, day in and day out, it becomes your truth.
don't judge this girl or what she went through...you did not have ot go through it and no one will ever know what she did to survive.
The key thing here though is to learn from this case and I cannot stress that enough! First and foremost people have to become involved in the rest of society in a positive way -- -- put your nose into things, especially when it comes to a child. If you read the lead article in the Sacramento Bee (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32614326/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/), things occured in 2006, which may have made this horror slightly shorter. The neighbor who called the dispatcher and said that Garrido was "psychotic and had sexual addiction" should have raised the level of suspicion in somebody who already has a record of this kind of behavior, without a doubt! More importantly, the reporting person stated, "she looked over the fence and saw several tents in the yard with people living in them and saw young children living in the tents." It would seem to me that had those words actually been transmitted to the investigative officer, and I doubt they were, then I would have been incumbent on that officer to check go to the neighbors house and ask that neighbor to please point out what the neighbor saw.
After reporting the second one, October 2006, in a very clear manner and stating that I was taking the child into my home, a mistake on my part, to protect him from the person who was running a scam with this child, a few moments later a police helicopter and two squad cars with four police showed up at my home as if I was the perpetrator. All things were sorted out and I am glad to this day that I did what I did! Police work hard enough as it is but they must have accurate information in order to appropriately respond to call. There must be a way to raise the level of suspicion and make the policemen truly aware of what the caller said or perhaps even transmit the message itself to the investigating officer.
the cops and other authorities are going to keep making these same stupid mistakes over and over again
its called LAZY and incompetent. they on the other hand call it overworked and understaffed.

Has this lardarse sherriff Warren E Rupf resigned yet?Judging by his size on television he never gets off his fat arse. What about the USELESS trash parole officer??This reads like a fiction novel. What about the neighbours??.Is this a hillbilly neighbourhood or are permanent tents OK in the backyard???
Geez,,, how long are the Media wonders going to drag this out for,,,,,,,,,, Thank god little Teddy is in the ground so we don't have to read that barf anymore, and Jacko, I mean it's all kinda getting old....... Same story's for over a week....and they wonder way nobody buys or subcribes, views, or reads....
bastard should have been castrated at very least, but then all the liberals would have been up in arms telling us about rehabilitation and all the fine work the shrinks have been doing and the progress he has made ect. Kill all the people who are a menace to society, I dont want to pay for their imprisonment and appearances in court and for god's sake dont allow them to spread their defective genes around. If mental illness is truly a disease, and there is no vaccine, then remove it from the gene pool.
Time to bring back the lynch mobs, instead of some guy in a suit telling us what fair punishment is lets just yank the bastards out of the ccourt room and hang'em by the neck until he dies, and if someone gets in the way....hang them too. Time to go start a new state with laws that protect the people not the criminals. Murderers , kidnapers, rapist....once convicted your "rights as an american" should be forfeit. No vote, no free legal council, no nothing, just the minimum you need to survive, no extras at the tax payers expense.
Government cant even protect me from freaks like this in my own country and they expect me to believe that they can keep me safe from terrorist..good luck with that
Or hordes of invading illegals that think this is their country and they're "taking it back". (Never mind that we PAID FOR IT, int he Gadsden Purchase, it was mostly uninhabitable before damning up the Colorado, and SPAIN occupied it, not Indians and certainly not mixed breed latinos that didn't even exist until Spanish occupation, due to Mexico's version of a Grand Canyon the natives never teraversed due to no horses and no navies. But why be educated when you can be a moron wit no skills, diseases and a criminal record that gets free everything and a free pass in America at OUR expense. most of them can't read 5th grade Spanish.) Aztlan, La Raza, exterme hate groups the traitor Pelosi likes to go speak to and suck up to.

Yeah, sure! Let's replace the law breaking by the criminals, with more law breaking by the otherwise law abiding citizens. Makes sense, does it. NOT!
It's been tried before, ronnieray, and it doesn't work.
Hanging in court square sounds like a GREAT idea to me, especially for this jackleg! He doesn't deserve to take another breath of good air. It's not like we have to have a trial to see if he did it! There is no question of guilt. In order for there to be a 15 year-old child he raped a child. He violated parol of a 50 year sentence doing the kidnapping before he got to that horrid part. Do not waste the tax payers time and money to have a trial, feed this disgusting excuse of a person, cloth him, and give him a warm dry place to sleep. Go straight to the hanging. If the criminals start really having to pay for what they are doing as they used to (when there is no doubt about the crime) maybe we can put a stop to some of it!!! Don't try to say....oh but he is mentally ill. Do you know anyone in thier right mind that would kidnap an 11 year-old child, hold them hostage for 18 years and have 2 children by her while she was a minor herself. OF COURSE HE IS MENTALLY ILL. Get him away from the rest of us before he does something else crazy! It could be your daughter next time.
I am happy to see the parents realize it is not the fault of this little 11 year-old abducted child that she did not escape. I feel sure she was brain washed into believing she had to stay with those horrible people and that no one missed her or were even looking for her. She was tortured by visions of what they would do to her if she tried to leave. By the time she could have been big enough and strong enough to try and escape she had a baby. There was no way she was going to leave her baby behind. They had her totally dependant on them/him and being captured at 11 she had no choice but to bond with them. She was a scared little girl all by herself. I hope at some point she can resume some type of normal life. I pray that all of them can get the counseling they need to work at bonding in the right family.

This is an incredible derail. You could write songs about it. Michelle-367714, you're suspended for a day for violating #5 of the Code of Honor. Don't derail; don't post like a racist.
I moved to lake tahoe in later 1990 from alaska and remember this very well .... its amazing how we hear stories of very odd people hiding things and even with police and other officals around they never get caught till they themself do something odd or turn themself in, yet if i a person sits in best buy parking lot eating a hamburger at lunch, they get questioned and searched ... hope the 3 of them can turn around and have a normal life soon
ronnieray,a man after my own heart!!Why execute them when they can stay alive more than 10 years (after their conviction) on death row......Richard Ramirez,David Leonard Wood, convicted serial killers who are still breathing air. What a f....ng joke!!!!These mongrel bastards are alive and have cost taxpayers millions of dollars with their appeals alone, never mind the board and lodging!!!!! The victims families just shake their heads in disbelief as each year passes by!
shot them and the police should have known something ?? and the people around the house seen something , no kids why tents at all , all the training the police go though even when you get pulled over for a ticket or any thing else the police think you gulity of something thats why they stop you or seen things wrong in the area its thier training . the area know something kids playing why not in school crying babies cry her kids baby food , dapers, baby bottles toys how can some one miss all that , and they have no kids please be for real !!!!! don't waste a trail on them go jail go directly to jail send them to cuba don't close the prison there keep it open so we can get rid of the sick people in the country
I totally agree, him and his wife should be put to death, caustic acid down their throats, this sob's are trash wasting tax payers money. Once again, the judicial system has failed, and it over and over.
Weird guy.....very scary.
Whoa, whoa, whoa there, turbo. "Revealed, your intentions are!" says Yoda.
Mystery....I couldn't have said it better.
Focus people--Have some compassion for the victims in this story. .
He was given a LIFE sentence and released after 10 years!! Wow! Talk about "the system" failing!
ive had some experience with a schizophrenic. harmless guy. he laughed alot when he wasnt on his meds. he said the voices told him jokes. the real problem with schizophrenia is it affects the brains "diagnostic systems". many afflicted do not believe there is anything wrong with them.
Ditto! Can't say it any better than you just did. I am telling you, that I am in tears for everyone concerned and can't even begin to imagine their pain. It's just hard to believe that time after time and crime after crime, these poor creatures have slipped through the cracks. How does this happen???????
Take this human piece of crap out and shoot him between the eyes.
the point is if we read the entire story the Police Screwed up big time and there should be a really big lawsuit lodged for dereliction of duty . the police had a duty to investigate and had the authority to enter that mans home due to the fact he was on parole, but maybe his coffee was getting cold ??
Levantase:
Olivia and Elliot wouldn't have missed that!
Thank you judicial system!
G'day sir.
Gene Hunt you crack me up!!! A sense of humor right up my alley!!! LOL...
most times they do not do there job its really HARD YOU KNOW !!
Wanda-358181
wait Wanda that's indecent exposure ??
oh no if you looked you might be a pedophile. better pretend you dident see a thing.
He had a printing business.
I wish people would read the articles first, then comment.
Tells you a lot about printers! People in the litho trade SUCK!
Read the article again. He was not a printer, he bought business cards from the printer. It was unclear so I read it again. It says he brought the box, that had God's voice inside, into the shop.
Now Candice don't you feel like an idiot?
He was not a printer and he bought business cards and supplies from a guy that owned a printing business. I guess you didn't read the article, did you. I wish people would actually comprehend what they read before they go making a rude reply on people great posts.
It is a great question what he did for a living?
I want to know what he did that he needed business cards printed and if the materials were related to his sicko obsession with religion and sex then maybe that should have sent off red flags!
read the article he had a print shop
Garrido did own a printing shop. According to one of Garrido's customers, a glass and window shop owner named Tim Allen, Garrido brought the "God box" into his own (Garrido's) printing shop. The customer, Mr. Allen, was shown the box when he went into Garrido's shop to pick up his business cards. Also, several other news reports have mentioned Garrido having a printing business. Jaycee herself allegedly even helped him with the business, providing design work.
William,
Now, Do YOU feel like an idiot. You should.......
POS.
Yes, William and Wanda; Candice is correct. She is certainly not the person with reading skills of a 5 year old.
"Convicted sex offender released
He was sentenced to 50 years for the kidnapping conviction and life for the rape conviction but was granted an early release in August 1988."
Agree 100% -
AGAIN, if this man had not been released(life for rape),this would never of happened! I say we turn all the felons loose and send them to Afghanistan, front lines.
most bank robbers do not get off that easy maybe the Judge is a pedophile ?
the Governor of Michigan where I live ordered bunches of prisoners let out early including about 300 sex offenders. ended up with public out cry they realized they made a mistake and had to round them all up again. but they did let a lot of prisoners out and are closing the prisons politicians have to protect their pocketbooks you know. our Governor is from Canada guess she couldn't make a go of it up there.
there are plenty of people out of work, we should stop sending money overseas to people who hate us, build more prisons, staff them and start getting rid of some of this scum.
EUTHANASIA!!!!!!!!!! bty that is still too good for them
The police want there paychecks they need to start earning it by doing there job right.
A sex offender with children living or staying at his house. There is something WRONG with this picture.
Hopefully this will be a lesson to our law enforcement, parole officers and judges and any other office involved in monitoring people like Garridos.
perect reflection of the majority of California's "bleeding heart lefties" who would allow their law enforcement and legal system to deteriorate to the point that they either didn't care....or can no longer think cognitively! OutRagious!!!!!
I agree most people don`t work on their own roofs and here in AZ. with swamp coolers we can be up there more, but someone has to do maintenance and repairs on the roofs.
That should have read "when confronting a black male".
totally agree with the statements here. what immediately comes to mind is the skip gates case. everyone commenting here can castigate the police officers now but it was okay what they did to skip. the cop never even went in the house to check out the backyard. stayed on the porch.
....anyone with an agenda will use any story that comes up to foster it.....get a life ( and a race).....
sorry areo but i am white and i agree, this nut was given a pass because he was white and a religious nut...the police radar did not go up. he did not put out anything because he was talking to a male cop...not until he ran into a female cop did anything happen.
cops look for certain things, it's human.
Look inside.
Why even waste any tax payer dollars on him? Grab a baseball bat and end the piece of garbage.
I'll donate the bat.
"Psychotic sex addict
In November 2006, a neighbor called police and described Garrido as a psychotic sex addict who was living with children and had people staying in tents in his backyard.
Wow.
Are you kidding me?
No, you're a tool. Black man in the same situation would have gotten away the same. That professor aggravated the situation and berated the officers. I would have arrested him the same. This man was always calm, but a bit off.
Nothing to do with race, everything to do with demeanor and how well informed of the situation the cops are. People need to stop being racist. By that I mean both ways, accusing people of being racist and the actual racists.
"But she apparently had chances to flee". MSNBC this is a new low for the media. I'll never visit this site again.
Its an AP article. That's Associated Press. MSNBC did not write it. You'll find the exact same article on other sites.
Doesn't make it any better though.
jim, read lmarc's post...you can't be that dumb. and if you don't think that happens, don't you remember the kidnapping in the 60's...darn what was her name???? she became a bank robber with her kidnappers...it's a survival factor for them.
even this girls step father said so.
if you don't like msnbc...don't try to make stuff up.
I think you're referring to the kidnapping of rich girl Patty Hearst, that was in 1974.
She did bond with her kidnappers.
I think the neighbors knew more than they are saying...The neighbor to the west had a trampoline in their backyard in a satellite photo in 2008. There was none in the Garridos yard. Also, the blue tarps are not so evident. http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1554-Walnut-Ave-Antioch-CA-94509/18295462_zpid/
Yes, maybe he would have been arrested, gone to trial and walked like OJ Simpson....
LOL
good one
OJ had immense wealth. Having lots of money buys a fantastic defense team whether you are black or white.
jeannie-529664
"Having lots of money" didn't do Bernard Lawrence "Bernie" Madoff any good.
Bernie ripped off the rich and well-connected...enough said
What gets me about this case, is that a pedophile got off on what should been a 50 year sentence.
He wasn't a convicted pedophile. He kidnapped and raped a 25 year old woman.
Right on. Anyone who thinks that she could have escaped if she wanted to should go live 18 years in similar circumstances.
that's how brainwashing works...to the person that is undergoing it...it all sounds so reasonable. it's living in fear, and someone saying if you do this you wont live in fear.
when you hear something false, day in and day out, it becomes your truth.
don't judge this girl or what she went through...you did not have ot go through it and no one will ever know what she did to survive.
I like you thinking good sound basic thought,
did you read the one Michelle-367714 said to set them on fire how stupid is that.

I agree B52 ..I let my grass get to long and the code dept. is straight up my Azz, BUT this guy had tents, sheds, showers,etc..and NOTHING !!
Ad to your list the Judge that let this guy back into society.
Well your one person that reads or you would not be on this web. Nobody forced you to click on the threads about this story, Ted Kennedy or MJ.
bastard should have been castrated at very least, but then all the liberals would have been up in arms telling us about rehabilitation and all the fine work the shrinks have been doing and the progress he has made ect.
Like I said, douse him and his pig wife with gas and light them on fire. Then put it out and let them suffer for years of pain. They deserve it.
Works for me ....
seems that there are some sick people on this place set them on fire?
Michelle-367714 that's really sick looks like you are one of them.
Voted for obama did you olzapato ! I personally think this guy and his wife should be slowly roasted over a fire on spitts, stuffed pig style.
ronnieray,a man after my own heart!!Why execute them when they can stay alive more than 10 years (after their conviction) on death row......Richard Ramirez,David Leonard Wood, convicted serial killers who are still breathing air.
