BOSTON - A federal jury on Friday ordered a Boston University graduate student who admitted illegally downloading and sharing music online to pay $675,000 to four record labels.

Joel Tenenbaum, of Providence, R.I., admitted in court that he downloaded and distributed 30 songs. The only issue for the jury to decide was how much in damages to award the record labels.

Yep I was getting upset until I read that part, then I said ok that isn't too bad.

Just got the notice today that 17 people where I work have been laid off and the people who weren't either have to take 2 days off without pay or give up 2 days of leave time. I am going to give up 2 days of leave. Lord knows I don't need it, I have plenty more on the books .... like 3 weeks worth. Better than going without pay for 2 days. I would gladly give it all up if it would have saved those jobs for the 17 people.

3. my truck was stolen shortly after I returned from my tour in iraq in 2003, cost: $15,000 plus personal property. the insurance company won't pay because it is "recoverable in good condition" IN APATZINGHAN (way south) MEXICO!! ya thinks an ILLEGAL stole it to drive home in??

4. I am a disabled vet (service combat connected) yet I qualify for $16 per month in food stamps.

5. I have been treated for 6 years for PTSD but "not service connected" so I have only $974 to live on per month (60% service connected disability, bad knees, back, ankles) (yahoo search the keywords: "hardball ptsd" and you should get a lenghthy vid on PTSD denial)

6. the ILLEGALS with the "anchor baby" living down the street from me get $2,400 per month, plus free medical care (my V.A. bennies ONLY cover service connected injuries, and is NOT insurance)

Charles Agster, a 33-year-old mentally handicapped man, died in the county jail three days after being forced by sheriff’s officers into a restraint chair used for controlling combative arrestees. Agster’s parents had been taking him to a psychiatric hospital because he was exhibiting paranoia, then called police when he refused to leave a convenience store where they had stopped enroute. Officers took Agster to the Madison Street jail, placed a “spit hood” over his face and strapped him to the chair, where he had an apparent seizure and lost consciousness. He was declared brain dead three days later. A medical examiner later concluded that Agster died of complications of methamphetamine intoxication. In a subsequent lawsuit, an attorney for the sheriff’s office described the amount of methamphetamine in Agster’s system as 17 times the known lethal dose. The lawsuit resulted in a $9 million jury verdict against the county, the sheriff’s office, and Correctional Health Services.

Scott Norberg
One major controversy includes the 1996 death of inmate Scott Norberg, a former Brigham Young University football wide receiver, who died while in custody of the Sheriff’s office. Norberg was arrested for assaulting a police officer in Mesa, Arizona, after neighbors in a residential area had reported a delirious man walking in their neighborhood. Arpaio’s office repeatedly claimed Norberg was also high on methamphetamine, but a blood toxicology performed post-mortem was inconclusive. Norberg did, however, have methamphetamine in his urine, proving that he had used the drug at some point fairly recently before his death. During his internment, evidence suggests detention officers shocked Norberg several times with a stun-gun. According to an investigation by Amnesty International, Norberg was already handcuffed and face down when officers dragged him from his cell and placed him in a restraint chair with a towel covering his face. After Norberg’s corpse was discovered, detention officers accused Norberg of attacking them as they were trying to restrain him. The cause of his death, according to the Maricopa County medical examiner, was due to “positional asphyxia”. Sheriff Arpaio investigated and subsequently cleared detention officers of any criminal wrongdoing.

Norberg’s parents filed a lawsuit against Arpaio and his office. The lawsuit was settled for $8.25 million (USD).

Brian Crenshaw
Brian Crenshaw was a blind inmate allegedly beaten into a coma by guards working under Arpaio. Crenshaw suffered injuries that included a perforated intestine and a broken neck. He later died at a local hospital.

Crenshaw’s family filed a lawsuit against Arpaio and his office, which resulted in an award of $2 million dollars. As in the Scott Norberg case, it was alleged that Arpaio’s office destroyed evidence in the case. In the Crenshaw case, the attorney who represented the case before a jury alleged digital video evidence was destroyed.

Richard Post
Richard Post was a paraplegic inmate arrested in 1996 for possession of marijuana and criminal trespass. Post was placed in a restraint chair by guards and his neck was broken in the process. The event, caught on video, shows guards smiling and laughing while Post is being injured. Because of his injuries, Post has lost much of the use of his arms. Post settled his claims against the Sheriff’s office for $800,000.

Jeremy Flanders
In 1996, Jeremy Flanders was attacked by inmates at Tent City who used rebar tent stakes, which were not concreted into the ground. Although these stakes had been used as weapons in a previous riot at the facility, the Sheriff’s office chose not to secure them properly. During the trial, the defendant “presented evidence that, among other things, the Sheriff and his deputies had actual knowledge that prisoners used rebar tent stakes and tent poles as weapons and did nothing to prevent it.” Furthermore, “the Sheriff admitted knowing about, and in fact intentionally designing, some conditions at Tent City that created a substantial risk of inmate violence.” After the attack: “another inmate entered the tent and found Flanders unconscious, gasping for air, and spewing blood out of his mouth, nose and ears. Flanders had been bloodied and beaten so badly that the other inmate initially did not recognize Flanders.” Flanders suffered permanent brain damage as a result of the attack. On appeal, Flanders was awarded $635,532, of which Arpaio was personally responsible for thirty-five percent.

Ok, you convinced me that 1996 was a bad year for the Sheriff and very profitable for the attorneys. You have also convinced me that Phoenix has a serious methamphetamine problem. You also convinced me that being locked up with a bunch of criminals is a dangerous business, but I knew that to begin with which is why I stay out of things that might land me in jail. I really don't want to get beaten to death because I was incarcerated over a broken tail light.

This is happening daily in every jail and prison in the US. We have detention camps here and people get killed in them. That is probably why one should not enter the US illegally - it would be much safe for them to enter legally. You would be amazed at how dangerous being a criminal routinely is. The US jails and prisons are a cakewalk compared to the jail and prisons in the rest of world if you live to actually get to one that is.

It almost seems that you are asking that they should be safe in their criminal enterprises. Jail is dangerous so they should make sure they don't do the things that get them put in jail. Lie down with dogs, and you get up with fleas.

What is it you would have Joe Arpaio do when dealing with the kind of criminals who beat one of their own nearly to death? What would you have him do with a crazy who is all juiced up on Meth? You can put 4 230 grain slugs in their chest at close range and they still keep coming. A meth addict is dangerous, not an innocent college kid - they can and do kill people.

Are you willing to work as a jailer or prison guard? Irrespective of the pay what sort of person do you think you will get for guards?

From my experience every one in jail is sober as the judge and is an honorable fine young man except when they are screaming and trying to rip a Deputies throat out with their teeth, but that is just a quirk in their demeanor. They are all saints just ask their attorney or the family members. A couple of million dollars buys a lot of Sainthood.

I am not trying to be calloused but I don't think you realize what sort of dangerous animals most of these people are.

We have problems that are far more serios and far more deserving of the money and effort to solve them. Homeless Vets are on the street corners in every city in the US. People are going without food - people who don't break the law. We have immigrants who came here legally who are falling victim to the prejudices be raised by the illegals. We have Americans of Mexican descent who have been here longer than many of the Northerners but they are being treated as foreigners and "mojados" because of the activities of the illegal aliens.

I worked in Albuquerque many years ago (1980's) and the place I worked had probably 75 illegals at any one time, we always got a phone call about 30 minutes before an immigration raid and guys would go through the yards hollering, "la Migra!" and you should have seen em all run for the willow bottom down by the river. I really didn't know this country had decided a little crime - cross the border without papers - should be ignored. Does that mean I can run a red light - but it's not a crime until I hit someone?

I understand why someone would want to escape Mexico, but Americans are having to pay for the services - health, education, to name a couple - for each person who has come in. And jobs are already being lsot to Mexico, China and other countries. Those are crimes also - but it would not politically correct to say that, wouldn't it?

The temperature was 108 for the person is question. I am not defending the practise of housing people in this manner but I am criticizing people who do not get their facts straight and feebly attempt to make a point to sway people to their opinion when they are not being factual. I know for a fact your so full of it, like jipc pointed out our Marines dig holes in the sand to sleep in trying to stay cool. I know this for sure because my son happens to be a Marine. Not only that they are carrying about 80 or more pounds around on their backs.

These inmates that live in tent city don't stay in their tents all day as a matter of fact they have taken over the local animal shelter and the inmates feed, walk and train the dogs. They also have gardens where they grow their on vegetables. They also don't just sit around in their tents all day unless they want to. Anyway jail isn't supposed to be fun. Besides most of them are from Mexico they should be used to the heat.

You're full of crap Bud, as a former US Army Combat Engineer I can tell you that our General Purpose Field Tents are not normally connected to field A/C units (trailer mounted), the only time I saw those units in use was at our Battalion TOC (Tactical Operational Command) and that was for the computers - not us lowly grunts.

Most frontline combat elements (troopers) live out of a fart sack (sleeping bag) and not much else, they would be overjoyed to have a GP Medium or Large tent to complain about!

If you are a civilian in Sheriff Joe's juristiction and do not want to enjoy the pleasure of GP Large living... it is simple, Don't Break The Law!

Ways of forming militias,

One of the easiest ways to begin to form a militia starts at the local level, (ie County) by talking with friends, family, neighbors, and business associates whom you believe may, or have already expressed their belief, that there is sufficient cause to consider that some day there could be a need to defend their freedoms and liberties, families, or property from any possible threat that could arise. And feel that existing defenses such as regular military forces, Guard and Reserve forces may not be adequate, capable in time, or unwilling to do so under the circumstances. Whether that possible threat is from within or outside of the country is moot.

After determining that there are willing and able volunteers of a sufficient number to begin, it would be required to determine how and where a group could meet and discuss some sort of chain of command and duties that each individual could and would perform. Then that group would have to find and or procure a relatively large and some what remote area that they could begin to train and teach themselves the types of skills that would be needed to the best of their abilities. Having members which have or are currently serving in a military organization is not vital but certainly aids in the training process. Then it would be advised that additional recruitment measures be taken to increase the size and effectiveness of your force, as well as to increase the diversity of skills that could be of use. It would also be wise to try and enlist members from the Law Enforcement community as well, especially those at the county level, as they often share opinions that could be considered to be more conservative than those on the smaller local level. There are three reasons for this; one is that history has shown that totalitarian regimes have often used existing policing agencies and their members to act as enforcers of their policies due to their knowledge of their communities and members of the local population. A second reason for this is they also have access to communications that other wise may not be available to the average person, which could be advantageous to maintaining security and allowing a lead time for making preparations for a defense. A third reason is they also have access to materials and equipment that is other wise not available to the average civilian. Another group of professionals that would be of value to a militia are those in the agricultural and construction profession as the larger types of vehicles that they possess can be relatively quickly enhanced to serve as a primitive form of “heavy armor” and or troop transport as well as engineering vehicles (ie building birms and trenches). Once these things have been accomplished it is only natural that a militia should have regular times that they assemble and train in their skills. And it is only natural that it will continue to grow as time goes on. Also, it is only natural that there may be members that are there to “observe and report” to others that do not appreciate your efforts, so it is imperative that all operations are not done in an illegal way or to use illegal tactics, weapons, or devices, and that existing laws are not violated.

Definition of Militia:

In recent times various members of Congress and others in official positions within the administrations of government have made arguments concerning the definition of a militia in an attempt to ensure that only government authorized and sanctioned bodies of citizens have the right to assemble and train in activities associated with a military force ( i.e. National Guard and Reserve units ). Their reasons for these attempts or are not fully known, but are suspicious none the less. It was made evident in our Constitution that it is the responsibility of citizens within a Free State, that they should and could, form and maintain an assembled body of able men (and woman) to train and practice in the activities involved with military actions. And that they should at regular times, assemble for such purpose, as to maintain a state of readiness.

The following is the legal definition of Militia as found in Blacks Law Dictionary.

“The body of citizens in a State, enrolled for discipline as a military force, but not engaged in actual service except in emergencies, as distinguished from regular troops or a standing Army”.

A break down of this definition for the purpose of understanding is as follows:

1. The body of citizens in a State, is very simple and self explanatory.

2. enrolled for discipline as a military force, but not engaged in actual service except in emergencies, This would be all males, who by law, must enroll in the selective service upon turning the age of 18.

3. as distinguished from regular troops or a standing Army. Regular troops are just that, those troops who are members of the regular Army, National Guard, and Reserves. A standing Army, are those troops who have been deployed among a population of citizens.

Then, try going to an emergency room, not only does it take 4-6 hours just to be seen but they have to recoup those costs that aren't paid for by the people who don't have healthcare and in our area it's mostly "visiting" or "welcomed" people of Middle Eastern descent. There was an article a few years ago, when our hospital had a 30 minute GUARANTEED to be seen waiting period, which reported on Middle Eastern women coming to the U.S. to "visit family" when what they were REALLY doing was coming over to DELIVER their babies, then disappearing back to the homeland. I'm sure that the same (except they disappear into the U.S.) of Mexicans down south.

The hospital has to recoup costs somehow or they go broke and shut down like alot of them down south are doing today! Higher costs are paid for by people who have insurance because THOSE costs are pretty much guaranteed to be paid!

We constantly get illegals being brought in to the ER by the Border Patrol that were apprehended in the desert after either getting lost, abandoned by their coyotes, or both. It is both heartbreaking and disgusting at the same time, depending on the situation. The simple fact is that it amounts to taxpayer expense free medical care that our government does not even come close to making up the difference foe. Americans with insurance get stuck for this big time! It is even worse if they have to be flown North to Tucson or Phoenix for more extensive care. Do you think the Mexican government picks up any of the tab for this? Think again. As far as they are concerned, if it happened in your country, you foot the bill!

There are many US headquartered (IRS 501c3 tax deductible charitable) organizations, both religious and civic operating in Mexico telling people there that they need to to to the US for free medical care, food, free education, etc.. These US organizations include local American churches and public and private US colleges. These people actively promote "immigrant rights" to the 40 and under crowd in Mexico. These are American citizens who accept tax deductible donations to go to places like Zacatecas in the Central Mexico Highlands, open an office and advise people on how to enter the US - and they tell them that "We are all Americans! The US does not have a right to keep you out, or to deny you the help you need"

There is one or two of these groups operating in just about every city in Mexico. I have been in the office of the one in Zacatecas that is staffed by a couple of college age young women from California. I have seen their posters on the wall about "Immigrant Rights".

Ask the ones that the Border Patrol bring in about what they were told about crossing the Sonora Desert, or about crossing the Chihuahua Desert. Ask them if they were told that after Brownsville and then Raymondvile, Texas it is an 80 mile walk across open ranch land with no buildings to the next surface water. I have talked with them and they are told some of the most incredible lies by Americans who go to Mexico representing Churches and civic groups.

Rent-seeking by businesses seeking to preserve profits by enacting a favorable legal environment instead of by selling a superior product isn't so great. That's what we had with poor regulation in the financial markets. It's also what we have with immigration: less-skilled American workers seeking to maintain an advantage in labor markets over immigrants not by doing a better job for less money, but by simply outlawing the competition.

Altering the legal environment is simply a way of changing the landscape for making money. Money saved is gathered without paying overhead to accquire it. If there is an effective way to circumvent regulations and empty your 401K I will find it. If I can influence stock prices to my favor I will do that also. If I can find a way to outlaw the competition I will do that also.

The fact is that the illegals give me a mechanism to force wages down to minimal costs. The more illegals there are in an area the better my bargaining position with workers. I dont need to hire the illegals the risks of issues with the law and with illegal aliens rights groups makes the (cost-benefit) to risk picture not beneficial.

The presence of the illegal allien makes the US worker drop his asking price to $4 or $5 per hour. I dont have to offer any sort of benefits other than the worker gets their pay. There is no better job for less pay - it is just the same job for half the pay.

The illegals are not better skilled than the American workers - they frequently refuse the work because they have groups that help them collect benefits and who advise them on manageing their pay so they qualify for benefits.

The presence of the illegals does in fact hurt the American worker and since the American worker has no government to represent them there is actually nohing they can do about their plight unless they take stepos to change the face of politics in the US. The Left represents the illegals and the Right works for people like me.

You are absolutely right, I have only had a "surface" look at the actions of "Joe" and under the covers I'm sure there are a lot of disturbing non-disclosed issue's.

My sole intent and comments were a reflection of where the prison systems were lets say in the 70's and where they are now.

Prison systems now days are nothing more than a revolving door re-education systems for improving ones criminal deftness. And I wont even start to talk about "Country club" prisons. Drugs, murder, perversion.....are all rampant inside the prisons systems so whenever I see some action by anyone at least on the surface that appears to be taking a harder stance I must applaud that action. The crime commited many times has no bearing on the sentence rather Legation and money seems to be the determining factor.
