Wow...too bad...some macho @!$%# got himself killed while trying to prove how brave he was. I only hope that he has no children...so that silly gene pool died with him
It is sad that someone had to die, but I am against this Running of the Bulls, it is animal cruelty and I think they are savages for doing this to the Bulls.
I guess their waiting for a child to be gored until maybe they stop this cruelty to the Bulls!
I wouldn't go to a bullfight but if somehow I did I'd probably get my a** kicked because I'd be rooting for the bull, especially if it gutted the b*stard.
This is what EVERYONE pays for! Part of the 'appeal' of this event was to see if you were man enough to escape certain death. My sympathy for the family. It's just crazy to know that this guy paid for his own death. Crazy is as Crazy does.
Why do we care if he's dead? What's the Spanish equivalent to "Hey, Y'all, watch this!" The main difference between the running and the redneck last words (BTW, I am a happy redneck, known to have said this a time or two myself) is that our dumb stunts are done to ourselves. The only consequences are to the idiot and his family. But after the runnung, ALL of these bulls will be used as bovine pincushions by the Picadores (stuck with small spears until weak from blood loss), then played with by the Oh-So-Brave Matador until the Matador is bored, then "bravely" stabbed with a sword until dead. Bullfighting is one of the incredibly rare times when I, "GAG, COUGH, GROAN" am forced to agree with PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals) and say "END THIS NOW!" To my fellow conservatives, no, I am not crazy, I hate the useless death of anything. (Also, if the PETA Perverts go to Spain, maybe the spanish will end bullfighting, and take up a new hobby, PETA FIGHTING, where a poor PETA pervis used to replace the bull!)
I would love to see Pelosi run with these bulls that would be sweeeet 8)
Al--Pelosi already does this everyday in Washington the only difference is she is the bull that is after each and every American. She is stomping, snorting and goring in all directions. I do apologize to all bulls since you all look better than she does.
Sorry to this chap's family but running from bulls? Not the brightest thing to do.At 47 any thoughts of doing this almost insane activity are long past (although at a certain age it would have been fun).
Spain= Idiots... these people are willing to risk their lives from running Bulls, but they all would not risk anything against terrorists, and pulled out of Iraq a while back... And still got bombed anyway on their trains in Spain... I have no Faith in the people of Spain... Cowards all of them...
Jorge..do not accuse someone of something you can not spell correctly. This whole running with the bulls became popular after Steinbeck wrote about it..
hepkess you took the words right out of my mouth..sad thing is..poor cappacino will be murdered for defending his life. This so called tradition is barbaric and I kudos the bull..
Still sounds unfair.......the bulls only got one and all the bulls will die!! What a sick sport and says a great deal about the people who have this spectacle every year... This is right down there with dog fighting! There is a world of difference between humanely slaughtering a animal for meat and one being tortured to death for the enjoyment of humans. Wish the bulls could even the score!! Only a sick society would do this year and year......
I agree with you. Isn't this kind of like allowing the public to step in front of a speeding car? Their government should do away with this so called sport. I hardly think that when you kill or torture an innocent creature, it is a sport. I can't understand how there are people that can ENJOY such a thing. Watching a bull being hit with sticks and whatnot, of course it is going to attack because it is only defending itself. What a bunch of sick people. They should try another sport that does not involve innocent animals!!
The running with the bulls is ok - if they have to keep that tradition - since it is more favorable to the bulls and people aren't sticking spears in their backs. What should be banned is the killing of the bulls later in their traditional matador arenas where everyone sits around in their finest silks and cheers as the life is slowly drained from the bull. But there is animal cruelty all over the world. We in the US don't torment the bulls with spears before we kill them, but we still kill them piece by piece on factory farms and in slaughter houses, and while being transported to slaughter houses. They are treated very cruelly.
Nascar fans go to the races hoping to see car crashes, just as Pamplona spectators go to see someone get gored. What I found interesting is that the ranch that provides the bulls, has a reputation for having some of the most aggresive bulls. So the festival committee is basically saying, we need more blood this year. Thank god for testosterone, think how boring life would be without it.
yes; and how do you make an already aggressive animal even more wild;aggressive and dangerous?....you taunt them; beat them; and provoke them on a daily basis.....just like the Neanderthals who train their Pit-Bulls and Rottweiler's......the animals are not the Primitive Barbarians here........by the way; I ALWAYS hope the Bulls win and get their revenge
While many Westerners consider this and similar events barbaric, bull fighting countries see it as tradition. The event can be traced all the way back to 1215. At least in this event, the bulls have an opportunity to get a little revenge, unlike a typical bull fight. The posts here are typical. Americans, and I am one although my family is from Asturias, Spain, always want to tell other countries how ridiculous their traditions are and how "stupid" they are to engage in them. The hypocracy on this issue seems to know no bounds. Running in front of the bulls is not a sport. It is a right of passage for some, and a mere thrill for others. Many of the runners would never jump out of an airplace, or tie a bungee to their ankles and jump off a bridge, "sports" that have resulted in far more fatalities since 1910 when injury records on the running of the bulls began.
More food for thought for those of you posting, "he got what he deserved". Those who engage in the running of the bulls understand the danger that is involved...that is why they do it. When someone gets injured or knocked down, strangers come to pick them up, or put themselves in harms way to divert the attention of the bull. And never has a Spanish runner been injured in the event and then sued the city of Pamplona. Every year it seems there are more Americans in the event, and they are frequently the ones who get injured (usually because they are drunk). Spaniards aren't looking for western approval, or sympathy.
I'm not sure I see the comparaison between this event in Spain and skydiving or bungie jumping. Granted, none of them are something that I would ever take part in...However the later two do not require the use of live animals which are obviousley treated poorly for the purposes of a 'tradition' as you call it. It always amazes me that cultures (America included) try to justify unsafe, cruel and questionalbe behavior by calling it a 'tradition'. Let's face it, some 'traditions' deserve to fall by the wayside.
The running itself isn't a sport...it is a tradition. The actual bull fighting is a sport. Is it barbaric because the bulls die? Or is it barbaric because people are often injured and sometimes killed? If it's the latter, then sports such as skydiving, base jumping, MotoX, bungee jumping, and rock climbing, sports that claim far more lives each year than this event, should all be outlawed based on your logic.
Ken, I guess you see yourself as someone who should determine what traditions should "fall by the wayside". The running of the bulls is not a so-called tradition, or a tradition "as I call it". It IS a tradition. We Americans don't have any traditions dating back to 1215 because there was no America. That being said, the point I'm making is no one really cares about the people who are injured or killed. That's why I made the comparison to skydiving, base jumping, etc...Everyones' sympathies are for the animal. If it wasn't those other sports would be forced to "fall by the wayside". We are fine with the loss of human lives just as long as no animals are hurt. If skydiving somehow involved the death of an animal it would be stopped immediately. I don't condone the senseless killing of animals, but I also believe that traditions that represent a culture should be upheld to the extent that they don't jeopardize the lives of innocent PEOPLE. There are no innocent people in bull fighting or bull running. The bulls are sacrificed for this tradition and the people who run in front of them understand the risk. That's why they do it in the first place. I think a better argument would be against the prize hunters who kill big game they don't plan to eat just so they can have a mount on their wall. What tradition are they upholding?
Sorry, UTAMPA, you had me until the statement "bulls are SACRIFICED" , then again at "against prize hunters". While trophy hunting, ONLY for the mount is wrong, the animal is rarelt tortured before death. So while it is wrong, it is not even remotely on the scale of 50,000 cheering fanatics, screaming for blood, cheering the "sacrifice" of the bull. By the way, these days even the trophy hunters nearly always donate the meat, in the US it tends to go to homeless centers or other feed the hungry groups while overseas it usually goes to the local tribe, clan, family group, or whatever. To the best of my knowledge, only bullfighting routinely wastes the resulting meat. Do not get me wrong, I am opposed to killing anything for sport, but I do wholly support meat hunting. Just as Ted Nugent says, "You kill it, You eat it." But back to the bullfighting. I DON"T CARE IF IT IS TRADITION, IT IS BARBARIC, END OF STORY!!!
Neale; Well put. I have similar thoughts. And hunting, as long as the "Hunter" practises and eats the kill, I can go without voicing concern. It's the "hunters" that go out and "HACK" their way through, no target practing throughout the year, maybe take the son or daughter too, cold. They are not only a threat to the animals, but other seasoned hunters. I've had too many cattle and one horse shot by bullet and arrow by undisaplined "hunters". I've started patroling the fense line with my own with warnings that "hunters" are in open season if near my land. GOD BLESS TED NUGGET.
UTAMPA; - it's not that we are against "Tradition", we are against the resulting torture of the Bulls. Run with them, pat them on thier heads ( Look at American Rodeo Clowns - They run, jump and pat them- without the Bulls being harmed before or after (Their worth too much money to be harmed)), but, this old Roman Lion pit mentality needs to end.
Spritmask....I understand your point and Neale's, I simply don't agree. This is the type of discussion I think is wise to avoid. Listen to your arrogance: "this old Roman Lion pit mentality needs to end." Just because you don't understand their culture and history doesn't mean it should be discontinued. I'm not asking you to agree with it, or condone it and the good news is, as stated previously, Spaniards aren't looking for western approval either. All I'm suggesting is that American's respect other cultures and allow them to practice their traditions as they see fit as long as innocent lives are not at risk.
The comparison to hunters is simple. Prize hunters kill plenty of animals that cannot be eaten simply for the trophy and don't tell me all of these animals are killed quickly and without pain. If it's the killing of the animals that bothers you, then your argument would be against them as well and there is no tradition supporting that "sport". If it's the torturing of the bulls and not simply the killing of them that you claim to be barbaric, then your argument could also be posed to any meat industry across the globe where animal cruelty has been well documented.
Again, my point is these animals are killed as a result of a tradition that dates back 800 years and what hypocrites we are to tell them it's barbaric and should be stopped.
Utampa - I agree with your statement about the senseless killings performed by big game hunters. Even if they don't do it in front of spectators of thousands, it doesn't make it any less cruel. They do it purely because they like the thrill of killing a wildl animal but they have brought big game to the point of extinction feeding their own selfish needs to feel manly. We all know they don't eat the meat of elephant, rhino, lions or tigers. That sport should definitely be stopped.
Hunting isn't a sport, it is, for many people I know, the only way to make ends meet. The ethical hunter ALWAYS tries for 1 shot kills, and to minimize suffering. Even the trophy hunters GENERALLY try for this. Killing an animal is never without a modicum of pain, NO MATTER HOW IT IS DONE, but I am an omnivore, as nature designed us to be. I may find a deer cute, a cow sweet-tempered, a bunny fluffy, or a chicken dumber than dirt, I still eat them. And, having done some research, I believe hunters, by and large, are far more humane in the harvesting of THEIR meat than you are, who by it packaged in the store, bought from factory farms where the animals spend their entire lives caged, then assembly line butchered and processed. That having been said, I truly do try to avoid NEEDLESSLY causing any animal to suffer. In order to feed the number of people we have, factory farming is a necessary thing. Torturing animals for sport and entertainment is wrong. Hell, up until 160 years, ownig human being was a tradition. Do you want it back? After all, traditionally, it was the right thing to do, it goes back at least as far as the Old Testament, can't get more traditional than that. Let's face it, some traditions simply have to die, and bullfighting is one of them. END OF ARGUMENT. PS, no, big game hunters do not eat elephant, rhino, lions, or tigers, BUT NATIVES DO EAT ELEPHANTS AND RHINOS, AND LIONS AND TIGERS DO EAT PEOPLE.
They do it purely because they like the thrill of killing a wildl animal but they have brought big game to the point of extinction feeding their own selfish needs to feel manly. We all know they don't eat the meat of elephant, rhino, lions or tigers. That sport should definitely be stopped.
The elephant is the case where regulated hunting has preserved the elephant population in Africa, the population has gone from near extinction to between 470 and 690,000.
Now while lions and tigers may not be used for much meat, the standard practice on safari is to give the elephant meat to the locals, which is a lot of meat and can feed a lot of people.
I agree with John. I wouldn't want to see anyone hurt, of course, but it would be fun to watch Nascar fans (probably bloated with a few too many beers, just like most people at sporting events cause that's pretty much the point, right?) trying to make it a full round.
I love this. Lets propose something. Next Nascar race. After the victory lap, have all cars take an extra lap and whichever spectators can survive crossing the track during this lap gets FREE TICKETS.
Too funny. Maybe they could turn this into a reality tv show.
Round 1: Running of the bulls. Survivors proceed to Round 2: run in front of stampeding elephants. Round 3: Run through Everglades / swamp with alligators/crocs. Round 4: Swim with piranhas. Round 5: Swim with sharks off South Africa. Round 6 and grand finale: run around NASCAR track.
Mankind will be better off after we cull some of the idiots who see the need to do this.
Hey now, don't go stereotyping all Nascar fans. We have a track in my area that brings in tons of revenue and people from every state in the union and other countries as well. And there lots of Nascar fans who are animal lovers and stand against the cruelty of dogfights and cockfights.
understood; most of my extended family are Nascar Fans who despise the exploitation of animals for these kinds of Bloodsports...sorry about the stereotyping..my bad
As one poster already commented, it's sad and stupid the man got killed because he thought he was being macho.
These bullfights are primitive and backwards. It's a very cruel tradition and form of entertainment.
Has not our world progressed further than this already? We must. There are greater priorities to work on other than worrying about tortured freightened bulls and the silly people that take part in this tradition.
These bulls don't die slowly either by the way. They are continually gorged to death with long knifes by the ppl engaged in this so called "festival". They are frightened by the large crowds running around them, then stabbed repeatedly taking up to hours to die.
This is akin to Canadas traditional cruel baby harp seal hunts each year. Millions are killed and over 67% have been filmed being hooked with giant hakinpik hooks and skinned alive, in front of their crying mothers. The giant hooks are on the end of a pole and the metal hooks are bigger than the size of two of a mans fist. The men hook these directly into their mouths, as they are alive and screaming like babies.
I'm ashamed of the people on our planet. There are some intelligent, compassionate people who are trying to educate the others........but there are so many that enjoy hurting animals, so many that are seeming impossible to civilize, so many ppl that continue to have high numbers of births, rather than just two per women, that it seems the odds are against us for saving our planet.
We need changes, drastic changes and we need them now. Time is running out.
If there were no demand for white baby seal fur, there would be no point in killing them. I liked that tactic of throwing blue (harmless) dye on the seal's coat making it worthless as a harvested pelt.
You have obviously never been to a bullfight. Your description is completely wrong. The bulls are not repeatedly stabbed by knives, are not amid a swarm of people, and do not take hours to die.
Professor, I like your elequence. I believe, however, that you miss typed, when you presented that the Bulls don't die "quickly", you have written "slowly". I'm happy that some one else is bringing the cold, hard facts to the public. As many things in our times, the cold hard facts, are usually kept from us, the peasent public. I tip my hat to you Sir.
You obviously have not been invited to the "back stage" show before the Bull fight. Nor have you probably been to some of the days prior when the bulls are walked into town and then run the final distance as I described in my original comments. If the Spanish want to keep this a tradition, then very well, do it hand to hand without cripling the Bull first. Then lets see how the tradition carries on!!!
Very well said Professor. I noticed when the media covers this that they add to this insane "adventure" , making stupid remarks that only invites more of this barbaric practice. All I can say is Spike your wrong and apparently condone this barbaric ritual. Until people like you WAKE UP and realize, that other animals are not for your amusement as you watch them being terrorized, tortured and finally killed and it can take hours, btw. You must have have been to every bullfight. That would be the only way your "words" would have the any value.
I do not what any living species including man to suffer or die for someone elses entertainment. I this case I do see a positive that this person was killed. People that do this are not very intelligent and hang on to traditions, that should have been abolished many years ago. Just because it is in a countries heritage, tradition ( like hunting here in the US), doesn't make it any less vile and barbaric to take the life of another, in these cases for "fun". Maybe the people that put on this "event" will have a change of heart, but somehow I think it may just create more non thinking, non caring people to hope for another death by a terrified bull that is protecting itself and has NO chance at a fair "fight" in the arena.
As someone who knows people who came from Spain, the goal of stabbing the bull is to kill it immediately and in one blow. If you have a matador that can stab the bull once in the heart and it dies, that matador is champion. The time and the number of stabs that it takes to kill a bull is what the matador has to beat. It's basically like golf: The less swings you have, the more likely you will win.
Also, it is illegal to club baby white seals. Maybe you have heard of that law that was passed in the 1980's. most likely not if you stated that white seals are still being clubbed. The whole play of the white seal being used to this day is just a way to play on emotions.
Because baby WHITE seals are are cuter than the adult version and cuteness sells. Also, what is your source that they are being skinned alive?
Ahhh Spike, I have been to a complete bullfight in Mazatlan, Mexico and it is a long gory painful spectacle. If you haven't actually been to one then don't talk. I was young and drunk and stupid (which usually accompanies young) and I would never go again. But the animal suffering was beyond comprehension, it was drawn out for a long time for public spectacle. I am now sorry I went and would never wish that on any animal.
Iowa 61: Your statement reminded me of the way the Romans used to kill the Christian people. This was like going to the Barnum and Bailey Circus to them. Watching people being devoured by lions is even horrible to think about. People through the ages have enjoyed the torture of humans and animals. When will it end? Sorry to say this, but he got what he deserved. He knew what he was getting into.
I do assume a lot, when the words do not match the facts.
Checkmate -
You are correct about the goal of the Matador, however, with an opponent that is weak for loss of blood and his vision impaired due to vasoline or the like while in the holding pen, the killing is still a process of days and hours in the ring. Any yes, the killing of baby seals was made illegal, however, like anything esle, people still do it. And I agree, I haven't seen anything about the skinning part. That would be even worse.
I say change the rules. Have the bulls run and don't get them injured. Have a healthy bull go at the matador.
As for the baby seals, made illegal, therefore it is poaching. You can't go after sealers because someone is breaking the law. That's like going after all hunters just because some dumb bass decided to shoot deer and such out of season. A poacher is different than a hunter.
I find that sealers try to be like true hunters: they want that one-hit kill in order to not have the animal suffer long. In the past, they used to take a sledgehammer and bring it to a cow's skull in the slaughterhouse for the same idea. Now, they use bolt guns to render the cow unconscious and then slit its throat.
You have obviously never been to a bullfight. Your description is completely wrong. The bulls are not repeatedly stabbed by knives, are not amid a swarm of people, and do not take hours to die.
Spirit also didn't direct seals or skinning to you. I mentioned it to the original poster (Prof) and Spirit replied to me.
DW.....NASCAR doesn't torture an innocent animal by skewering it with spears and swords.....chasing it with horses.....and then killing it for nothing but sport.....get your head out of your @SS and wake up.
Spike....yes I have been to a bullfight....in Spain....I went with someone like you who wanted to convince me it wasn't like people said....well you are all full of bull yourselves...it was horrible and barbaric......the most repugnant thing I've ever seen.
Okay, let's change that to 'a countryman where dog-fighting is a sport' or. . . .chasing bears, raccoons etc with hounds, setting cruel torturous traps, promotes, factory farming ad nauseum. I say let's send Michael Vick to 'run with the bulls'.
Yeah, as if we don't have people putting in Bush comments anywhere they can. Have you spoken out against that or does it suit your needs so you let it slide?
I like/endorse neither.....a presidential election for me is always a choice of who MIGHT be the lesser EVIL...not a registered Repub or Dem...now I ask once again; feeling a little desperate?
I find it had to feel a whole lot of sympathy for someone who was 1) stupid enough to think that running in front of a 1500 pissed off bull was a fun way to spend an afternoon and 2) participated in an event where numerous animals will be killed in a cruel and painful manner.
I've been to Spain and witnessed a bullfight and I was sick to my stomach the entire time. Sure, you can respect the history and pagentry that goes along with the event and the skills of the matadors. But when you come right down to it, bullfighting is no better than a canned hunt. The bull has no chance of winning. Nearly every single bull that enters the bullring is killed at the end and it's not a quick death. The bull is repeatedly teased and taunted and wounded so that it 's badly injured and weakened by the time the death blow is delivered.
After witnessing that kind of slow butchery of an animal, is it any wonder that when things like this happen, I always root for the bulls.
At least the bull has a chance unlike the cattle in this country that have no choice but to become our steaks and ground beef.
The bull may be granted an indulto in which the public or the matador petition the president of the plaza to spare the bull's life because he has fought bravely.
That is good at least, but how many actually wound the sissy, I mean matador :). Pure "will" of the spirit to get that accomplished I assume after all the bull has to endure to assure its weakness.
Actually, matadors do get wounded. I forget what my friend said the statistics were, but at least one is going to get hurt. Usually, it is the no-names. You won't hear about it in the news because they are newbs. But, if it is a big-name bullfighter that gets injured, then it is in the news.
Also, depends on the wound. The worse the wound (a gore), the more likely it will be in the news.
Also, take into consideration about how many times a matador competes and compare it with a baseball player. Difference in schedules work either with/against the injury. So, a matador that has a long time to wait with a small injury is probably not going to get press-coverage. But a baseball player who competes every few days and has a small injury might get press-coverage. So-and-so got a twisted ankle or a sprain wrist while playing baseball. Will they compete by the next game. I don't know if that makes any sense or not. It's really hard to explain.
Checkmate; That makes some sense. I do recall hearing in the news years ago about a matador being gored. It was pretty bad as I recall but that has been a long time ago.
Let us keep in mind the ancient Indian definition of vegetarian, people. VEGETARIAN: noun- ancient Indian slang for village idiot who can neither hunt nor fish. I am not sorry if this offends you, as I firmly believe that vegetarianism is counter-evolutionary for any sentient lifeform. Since it takes no brains to sneak up on a blade of grass, No vegetarian will develope brains enough to classify as sentient. THIS DOES NOT MEAN that I suport torturing animals prior to killing and eating them. I raise a large portion of my own food, both animal and vegetable. All of my animals are kept in large fields, fed well, kept clean and healthy, and yes, when the time comes, humanely killed and prepared for consumption. I make no apologies for being an omnivore. AN ETHICAL OMNIVORE, BUT AN OMNIVORE NONETHELESS.
This has been a time honored tradition in Spain for many generations. If they're OK with it so am I. I don't hear them criticizing us for some of the stupid things we do.
I agree. This so-called sport is ridiculous. Bullfighting is not a sport but a slaughter of an innocent animal that doesn't stand a chance. Check out the article by the Humane Society of the United States and WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) and you will get an education re: the unbelievable cruelty in the torture and death of the bull in the slaughter for the amusement of ignorant people.
Spain is a catholic country but I don't think the Catholic Church or St. Francis of Assisi would condone this unspeakable cruelty.
Thor - "This has been a time honored tradition in Spain for many generations. If they're OK with it so am I. I don't hear them criticizing us for some of the stupid things we do."
Thor by saying its ok, and they (Spanish people) supposedly don't criticize us is going to get the world nowhere. I hope they criticize us for our reprehensible treatment of animals in the US. I invite them to as a matter of fact. We hide so much from the public concerning the treatment of all of our animals that it is criminal.
So as I ask the Spanish people to change, I also hope that they will demand change from us.
As sad as somebody killed is, it's bound to happen when you mix 9 days of drinking solid, then trying to drunkenly outrun a 1500 lb animal with horns.......
As for the "cruelty" aspect of it, yes, it may be cruel, but don't forget, bullfighting has been part of the Spanish culture for AGES--longer than America's been a country. As TOR said in a prior post, we Americans have done some dumb things (think Vick) and mean things to animals (those that hunt for sport/trophies vs. food purposes), and you don't hear the Spanish criticizing us for that. If the tables were turned, I'm sure a lot of us would tell the Spanish to mind their own business when celebrating a CULTURAL event.
Suebelle, how do you compare Vicks with the running of the bulls? Vicks went to jail, got fined and lost his job BECAUSE animal cruelty is illegal here in the states?????? Ummm, the Spanish kill the bull at the end of the routine by throwing several spears into his body before he succumbs to a painful death. Like AUT said, to bad it was only one that died. Maybe next time the bull will take out a few hundred idiots and then perhaps you might see this type of entertainment (FOR SICK MINDS) be banned!!
But, please look at my comments. If the Spanish were real men, they wouldn't have kill the Bulls before going in to the ring. THAT is why an outcry is needed. It isn't a fair stand off. Yes, Americans' hunt. An YES the dog fighting that still happens here and Mexico and elsewhere needs to be, excuse the phrase, hounded to stop. Cultures and Social conscenes need to advance and do what is "right" and "just". There seems to be a hugh lack of "Honor" in the world. Very sad.
Leaving the handicapped out to die and not bring down the rest of society has been a tradition for centuries (long before Spain was a country). Does that make it Ok for you? What about the "traditions" of racism, sexism, slavery? Are those justified too?
Tradition is not a reason, it's an excuse. And I'm sure the spanish have plenty to say about us. Don't be moronic enough to think that those outside the US don't criticize the US.
If they want to do it, I guess they will. But to engage in an event like this, you should realize one of the things that can happen is your death. It's one of those events that you see on TV and everyone shakes their head.
I wish to heck that these articles would describe the torture these bulls endure before theyare left half bleed out and blind when they go into the bull ring!!! Everyone is so caught-up in humanity and rights but, no one will stop this brutality. Now, if the Spainish Bull fighters wanted to be really fair, or manly, they would face these Bulls without the bleeding of them and damaging thier sight. Before they get to the ring, some time within the running of the bulls, it is custom, but has become more violent, that the crowd will throw darts into the bulls and other items. Darts are most previlent, to see a Bull running with darts stuck in them seems to be a thrill. Animals are not as dumb as we think, nor do they not have emotions, scared, comforted, etc. Maybe the bulls are learning that if they are going to endure such inhumanity, then maybe they should start taking a few of us with them. AMEN. The old American saying, "mess with the bull and you'll get the horns."
I can criticize Spain and Mexico all I want. They are backward and choose to continue barbaric and cruel blood sports. Just because there are things that I would like to stop in my own country doesn't mean that I cannot dislike the cruel things done elsewhere.
Tradition is fine as long as it doesn't perpetuate cruelty, and bullfighting and bull running is definitely animal cruelty. I hope for a human society when these types of things are completely abolished and people look back on them as the ridiculous events they are.
Proves our point, there are still populations out there that have no understanding or contimplation of advancing to a higher state. If you enjoy such scenes, this concerns me, when will persons emulate this act themselves on an animal or another person? Physcology is now correlating this behavior in persons that enjoy torture of animals to then move up the chain so to speak. I bet Sudam or Hitler, and all the other NASTIES of the world, liked Bull fights. They are for evil and cowardly people, These people know that they are to win, the opponent has been "prepped" to make sure of this. But, if the opponent fights back, Oh the Indignancy of it!!! PUBLIC BEWARE OF THIS This is human behavior displayed at its most raw and carries over to what we do to eachother around the world. Maybe if we can advance and treat even a Bull with digninty, then maybe we could advance this to apply to eachother
So you are saying that a tradition that has been going on for 800 years is going to somehow result in the destruction of all of mankind....all of a sudden! Seriously, some of what you are saying is true but what you are implying is preposterous. For example, most if not all serial killers share a few common childhood issues, one of which is torturing animals (they are also bed wetters and pyromaniacs). Bull fighting and a child torturing animals is not even in the same ball park. Get a grip.
Wow...too bad...some macho @!$%# got himself killed while trying to prove how brave he was. I only hope that he has no children...so that silly gene pool died with him
Idiots=Stupid Stunts=Disasterous Results. "Nuff Said".
Something about this just wouldn't be enjoyable to me...
I like how they've been keeping stats on which ranch the bulls came from and how many people they've gored.
It is sad that someone had to die, but I am against this Running of the Bulls, it is animal cruelty and I think they are savages for doing this to the Bulls.
I guess their waiting for a child to be gored until maybe they stop this cruelty to the Bulls!
Somebody please trip Pelosi!
If this event was run in Washington D.C. it would be the running of the B.S.!
Animal abuse pure and simple.
All I can say is, these people are IDIOTS! They should stop this nonsense.
I would love to see Pelosi run with these bulls that would be sweeeet 8)
What a bunch of dumba$$#$. Score one for the bull.
These are Europeans of which we need to seek approval for our foreigh policy.
YOU ALL NEED TO GET A LIFE GET A CLUE AND MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.
Its their tradition their event if you dont like it dont go. You all bit#$%H about this but yet approve the murdering of unborn babies. Hipocrites.
I completely agree. It's their own stupid fault for doing this. Jorge, their "tradition" is stupid and evil...
Big Al-369306: "I would love to see Pelosi run with these bulls that would be sweeeet 8)"
Lovely thought but I think the bulls would run the other way. That woman is scary looking.
blame bush.
Big Al-369306
I would love to see Pelosi run with these bulls that would be sweeeet 8)
Al--Pelosi already does this everyday in Washington the only difference is she is the bull that is after each and every American. She is stomping, snorting and goring in all directions. I do apologize to all bulls since you all look better than she does.
I think Nelson on the Simpsons said it best...... Ha! Ha!
Sorry to this chap's family but running from bulls? Not the brightest thing to do.At 47 any thoughts of doing this almost insane activity are long past (although at a certain age it would have been fun).
Score one for the bulls. Too bad someone had to die though.
Wow - Jorge - get a grip pal.
Bull 1 idoit 0.........
The Bulls were bound to win one eventually....
Too bad that the bulls can't 'win' all of them. This is the most sadistic event around.
pj, huh? sadistic? they run from one end of town to the other, trample a few morons along the way.
But NASCAR doesn't kill the drivers after the race.
So a barbaric sport should continue because it's tradition??
More food for thought for those of you posting, "he got what he deserved". Those who engage in the running of the bulls understand the danger that is involved...that is why they do it. When someone gets injured or knocked down, strangers come to pick them up, or put themselves in harms way to divert the attention of the bull. And never has a Spanish runner been injured in the event and then sued the city of Pamplona. Every year it seems there are more Americans in the event, and they are frequently the ones who get injured (usually because they are drunk). Spaniards aren't looking for western approval, or sympathy.
To: utampa327-1
Thanks, Spirit Mask. I apprecate the support of intelligent people, and I hope Utampa sees my point.
12345-908903
The elephant is the case where regulated hunting has preserved the elephant population in Africa, the population has gone from near extinction to between 470 and 690,000.
Now while lions and tigers may not be used for much meat, the standard practice on safari is to give the elephant meat to the locals, which is a lot of meat and can feed a lot of people.

Yeah, but you don't see NASCAR fans running in front of the cars on the track. These people are morons.
Ya know , I would almost pay to see that though lmao
I agree with John. I wouldn't want to see anyone hurt, of course, but it would be fun to watch Nascar fans (probably bloated with a few too many beers, just like most people at sporting events cause that's pretty much the point, right?) trying to make it a full round.
I love this. Lets propose something. Next Nascar race. After the victory lap, have all cars take an extra lap and whichever spectators can survive crossing the track during this lap gets FREE TICKETS.
Okay I'm in.....as a driver.
At least NASCAR does not promote animal cruelty on a massive scale.
maybe not; but I would go out on a limb and suggest the Morons who promote/endorse Dogfighting and Cockfighting are most likely NASCAR fans
Professor Swarzenheimer... Well said. I agree with you.
Canadians claim to be a peaceful nation. Nothing peaceful about the way they kill a helpless animal.
This senseless and cruel killing can never be excused.
If there were no demand for white baby seal fur, there would be no point in killing them. I liked that tactic of throwing blue (harmless) dye on the seal's coat making it worthless as a harvested pelt.
Prof,
You have obviously never been to a bullfight. Your description is completely wrong. The bulls are not repeatedly stabbed by knives, are not amid a swarm of people, and do not take hours to die.
Dear spike-322306,
You're right! Swords are SO MUCH MORE COMPASSIONATE!
Here's your sign!
marisia what a GREAT idea..but the losers would probably kill them for vengence anyway.
Spike -
You obviously have not been invited to the "back stage" show before the Bull fight.
Paul
Human animal and non human animal advocate
Also, what is your source that they are being skinned alive?
spiritmask,
You assume a lot.
Spike -
I do assume a lot, when the words do not match the facts.
Checkmate -
You are correct about the goal of the Matador, however, with an opponent that is weak for loss of blood and his vision impaired due to vasoline or the like while in the holding pen, the killing is still a process of days and hours in the ring. Any yes, the killing of baby seals was made illegal, however, like anything esle, people still do it. And I agree, I haven't seen anything about the skinning part. That would be even worse.
Ahhh Richard,
I have been to about twelve bullfights. Always sat on the shady side, always sober, and enjoyed the spectacle.
Now, they use bolt guns to render the cow unconscious and then slit its throat.
spiritmask,
I have no idea what you are talking about. I never mentioned matadors, seals, or skinning.
Please read MY posts, and do not confuse me with other posters.
Maybe this is where the confusion is:
Bullfight = ring with matador. Usually, anyway.
Then spirit said this:
Spirit also didn't direct seals or skinning to you. I mentioned it to the original poster (Prof) and Spirit replied to me.
What a bunch of idiots!! Spain is a backward country.
Spoken from a countryman where NASCAR is a sport....
I *always* cheer for the bulls.
GO BULLS! Get some more morons!
We got a bunch of 'em in the White House!!
a GOP troll shows up in a conservation about Spain/Bulls...a little desperate are you??
Yeah, as if we don't have people putting in Bush comments anywhere they can. Have you spoken out against that or does it suit your needs so you let it slide?
I like/endorse neither.....a presidential election for me is always a choice of who MIGHT be the lesser EVIL...not a registered Repub or Dem...now I ask once again; feeling a little desperate?
Ah yes, SPAIN. Home of the inquisition.
TOR-
But, the saving of the bull's life is usually in vain. They are so weak from blood loss that many don't survive after.
Usually, if the bull wounds the matador, it isn't killed. The bull is then sent to stud and supposedly doesn't have to fight anymore.
Checkmate;
AN ETHICAL OMNIVORE, BUT AN OMNIVORE NONETHELESS.
yaaaaahooooo!!!! Score 1 for the bull!!! Another MORON out of the gene pool!!!
Those who play with fire...
Way to go bulls, To bad they will have a roast after..

We americans are only taking the goring in one are of our body!
You are soooo right.....and its from Obullma. He's got one horn and he's giving us the business
This has been a time honored tradition in Spain for many generations. If they're OK with it so am I. I don't hear them criticizing us for some of the stupid things we do.
I actually enjoy watching the stupidity of others. It gives me something to blog about. Hopefully more will get gored!
Just saying.....
Very sad.
Ridiculous tradition? As opposed to the American tradition of burning, looting, attacking cops, etc.--- that occur after athletic championship games?
Leaving the handicapped out to die and not bring down the rest of society has been a tradition for centuries (long before Spain was a country). Does that make it Ok for you? What about the "traditions" of racism, sexism, slavery? Are those justified too?
Tradition is not a reason, it's an excuse. And I'm sure the spanish have plenty to say about us. Don't be moronic enough to think that those outside the US don't criticize the US.
RF -
I concur. Well said. I believe Spike and probably others are confusing the 2 events. One is condoned by the majority of people, the other isn't.
didn't burning people at the stake for allegedly being a witch used to be tradition as well? or..
hiding our intellectually challenged in an attic? or
peeing in a pot that was kept under our beds? or
or,or, don't get me started~~ lol
Tradition or not, to torture an animal is not honourable, and a human should know better.
If they want to do it, I guess they will. But to engage in an event like this, you should realize one of the things that can happen is your death. It's one of those events that you see on TV and everyone shakes their head.
Only one died...... that's too bad. Stupid people............
Animals being used as TOOLS to entertain human FOOLS.
I only wish they sharpened the bulls horns before they turned then loose!
Well Said SpiritMask: "Public Beware !!!"
Get a grip.
charge the bull with murder ?
that bull should be given a medal and then made el presidente!!!
