PETA?...oh yeah...those idiots that protest eating meat while they wear leather pants and aligator boots. take them to the zoo and put them in the lions den...maybe they can talk him into forming AETP ( animals for the ethical treatment of people)
Neither Obama's fly killing nor PETA's gift was a major news event.
The Iranian-election situation, the Somalian violence, and numerous other issues around the world seem much more important. But, I do support PETA's basic message of seeking to treat all creatures humanely.
PETA members don't wear animal material. They're the nuts who think killing scientists in defense of animals is appropriate. They think that since animals are killed to test life-saving medications, it's okay to kill the doctors and scientists who are trying to save HUMAN lives.
PETA are the Keystone Cops of political activism. Whether its sending a gloating letter to a person who was still recovering in the hospital after being mauled by a tiger or comparing slaughterhouses to concentration camps, you can always count on PETA to embarrass themselves, destroy their own credibility and engage in the most counterproductive approach possible.
I disagree with the idea of this not being news. When a high profile organization (for whatever reason) engages in this kind of absurdity, it's sort of interesting. Then again, PETA does it so often, maybe it isn't news after all- saying PETA did something stupid is like saying the sun came up this morning.
these people are truly bizarre. Now fish are "sea kittens"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guess I'm supposed to let the skeets pick me up and carry me away. They will in this state if you let em!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PETA has lost all credibility. They really are so blind. All the good they can do is completely overshadowed by the nut jobs
Let me get this straight P.E.T.A. hates the fact that the Pres. swats a fly and yet it doesn't protest to the powers in Iran on their swatting of protesters.
I think they have their priorities screwed up. AS USUAL.
by far the idiots at peta take the cake... most of us who happen to "like" SOME of their programs (whaling) just got a good glimpse into how radical that organization has become - from their modest roots as a "caring" organization ... A HOUSEFLY .. what next - don't kill that malaria caring mosquito? .. or that plauge carrying rat.. or that rabid racoon? ..... OMG.. do they actually read what they write! .. OMG - that was good for my laugh of the day - but sadly those loons think they made a point . they did... even my wife will never donate to them again .. she says.. OK... now they are nuts!
So PETA, should I trap West Nile infected mosquito's for release.... perhaps in your offices? I generally support PETA for the most part, but your comments about smacking a fly goes beyond ridiculous and you may want to consider getting a grip.
Yep.. President Obama is a horrible person for swatting flies but PETA is wonderful when they euthanize puppies in back of hot vans for nothing more than being in a shelter waiting to be adopted. Yeah PETA is humane alright... NOT! oh and they think sex with veggies should be an "in" thing.
I think PETA is led by nut cases and people looking for a cause to feel self-righteous about. There are plenty of other groups out there that are against animal abuse and neglect that actually has a better concept of reality and priorities. Maybe they are feeling neglected because they haven't had their name in the news for a few weeks.
Everyone I've ever known who's a part of PETA has displayed a particular personality trait that helps to explain the extremes to which they go. They tend to be rather hostile by nature. They're always angry, with no real provocation. Yet, to justify that anger, they seek out things about which to be angry, at least publicly. However, the real root of their anger is some kind of psychological disorder that seems to prevent them from being able to feel much happiness, contentment, etc.
Whether it's a result of child abuse, bullying or a generally unhappy childhood, they carry enormous chips on their shoulders, and there really is no appeasing them. I've noticed this kind of behavior/mentality in a lot of members of the gay community (of which I, too, am a member). It frustrates me, because they tend to be the ones who take extreme action when fighting for our cause. They hinder us more than they help us.
PETA is no different. Their angry, hostile, even violent personalities and behaviors make people want nothing to do with them. Such behavior only brings out such feelings in others who might otherwise at least see them as merely a nuisance, rather than an enemy, but who might actually be willing to help them if they could just stop being d*cks.
Even I get angry sometimes, but that is by no means my default disposition, and it takes quite a bit of provocation to make me act with aggression. But, that's thing. It actually takes provocation to make me angry. Swatting a fly (an insect that is actually a threat to human health), however, is not provocative. It's just something which members of PETA are using to justify the anger they already had before the incident. If it hadn't been this, it would've been something else. So, just ignore them, and they'll eventually either go away quietly, or they'll raise their antics to such a pitch that they'll simply self-destruct.
Folks, you have to condsider the group this is coming from. PETA also wanted Ben & Jerry's to start using human breast milk instead of cow's milk for their ice cream.
how did i know some idiot would have something to say about this trivial thing. just like that head nod BS. GET A LIFE! I cannot believe that with everything going on in the world right now MSNBC gives time of day to these idiotic "stories" F**K YOU who ever took the time to write this garbage and even interview PETA About it
My friend's cat killed a bird a couple of weeks ago. You should organize a protest rally. I already threw red paint on the cat but I don't think he got the message (he just looked confused and pissed off). He also didn't seem moved by my angry protest letter.
I wonder what kind of clever name Ben and Jerry's would come up with to market ice cream made from women's breast milk? The possibilities seem endless.....
They're a nonprofit. I know they rely heavily on donations, but I would feel sick to my stomach if these people were utilizing public funding.
For not being news, almost 500 comments and growing would be evidence to the contrary. Personally, I believe someone should swat PETA................................off the planet.............................
What really mattered was how one unscripted, unexpected fly seemed to fluster and frustrate Obama to such an extent. The little fly reminded us all that real life is without rehearsals, teleprompters, and excessively friendly reporters. If you don't understand yet, you will eventually.
Are you serious.....they're crying over a housefly.....those things carry diseases......way to go mr. president (great aim)....well someone tell peta to try and think before you speak....every time they say something as idiotic as this, they diminish the important work that they do.
Next thing you know they'll be bombing Exterminators.
PETA just over-extended themselves. No one gives a **** about flies, maggots or any other creature that doesn't have abstract thought. Obama could have swatted that fly and its mother would not have understood or cared. Where is the tragedy?
Wow! You guys bought into this hook, line and sinker! PETA didn't make an issue of this. MSNBC made an issue of this to get you people screaming and yelling and raising their page hits. PETA didn't even release a statement on this. Someone mentioned it in passing, yes but it was big media who made it into an issue.
Must suck to be duped into doing what the corporate suits would have you do.
How's that for a misplaced knee jerk reaction? What was that about PETA being extremist wackos again? I think we've seen the extremism right here.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The rats appear to be gone from Alaska's Rat Island, more than 200 years after they scurried off a rodent-infested Japanese ship.
Helicopters dropped rat poison on the island last year in hopes of returning many bird species to the uninhabited island in the Aleutian Chain.
Scientists did find numerous carcasses of two types of birds: glaucous-winged gulls and bald eagles. The federal agency is conducting tests to try to determine why they died.
I haven't received any responses regarding this from any Peta Rep. The Noses must be attracting Flies around President Obama.
sources say this operation Billed taxpayers 2.5 Million $
how did i know some idiot would have something to say about this trivial thing. just like that head nod BS. GET A LIFE! I cannot believe that with everything going on in the world right now MSNBC gives time of day to these idiotic "stories" F**K YOU who ever took the time to write this garbage and even interview PETA About it
PETA went into a pet shop in Akron, Ohio, "rescued all the puppies and kittens" took them down the street into an alley and euphanized them all. Then threw all their bodies in a dumpster! Their VA
2007 yr end report showed that PETA "rescued" over 16,000 animals and rehomed all of 16.......the rest were all euphanized and their bodies were being kept in a huge freezer(purchased with a gov. grant) till the crematorium down the street could cremate them
Currently PETA is trying to get a ruling for $2000 for each horse they euphanize from our government and prevent the Indians in Montana from opening a horse slaughter house on their reservation. PETA has single handedly ruined the fourth largest industry in this country by getting legislation passed to prevent the slaughter of horses, the export of horses to be slaughtered, or the sale of any horse for slaughter purposes. So many horses will starve because no one wants them, they can't sell them or give them away, and PETA is the reason!
What a bunch of nonsense. Flies are not endangered, nor are they animals. I say KILL as may flies as you can. They are annoying. PETA, get real!!! I am not an Obama fan, but this is NOT news. C'mon already.
P.E.T.A. at one time was a respected organization to protect the humane treatment of animals. In recent years they have become a terrorist group. Here's a newsflash P.E.T.A., flies are insects. I guess we should protect mosquitos too and stop all mosquito abatement programs in the United States as well....You bunch of idiots!!!
PETA is really a hypocritical organization. Why stop at a fly? Why not protest the disruption of habitat every time a gardener tills the garden?
Why not sue the little old lady down the street when she plants a pozy? She has disrupted millions of bacteria, fungi, worms, bugs, etc. when she puts a shovel in the ground.
See how far thier hypocracy runs?! They are willing to step on billions of spores, bacteria, etc, but put "class" distinction on forms of live lower than Class Insecta....
I love PETA. People Eating Tasty Animals. I'm doing a Chef Salad (or combination turkey and ham sub) for dinner. Two animals for the same price as one.Bon Appetite!!
If God didn't want us to eat animals then why did he make them out of meat?Seriously after a year of battling the up armored flies in Iraq (if the President had hit one of them like that it would have brushed itself off and started bugging him twice as hard.It takes a special type of double tap to finish one of those buggers off) I enjoyed the heck out of seeing one of their American cousins meet Allah!).
I never heard anything from PETA when that kid cut up all those cats. But they raise their ugly heads over a damn fly that you can not even keep as a pet. The next issue with PETA will be that "RAID" insect spray is cruel.
Oddly enough, PETA wasn't going to bother with it, but the MEDIA asked for their opinion of it.
I think it's the first time the media has bastardized PETA for a news story to make the headlines instead of the reverse.
This goes double when a. it's a bug, and PETA said that Obama is human like all of us and b. the media HAS to get their daily allotment of the nuances of Obama's life. He's not a celebrity - he's our president.
(BTW, I am NOT a PETA supporter, and think that a lot of their "advocacy" does them more harm than good.)
I'm going to dedicate all the flys I kill over the next month to PETA. If they wouldnt have said anything I would have forgotten the fly strips but now I'll hang a few outside just to kill a few more in their name. They get annoying anyways when I'm trying to shoot the pesky chipmunks in my yard.
I see a fly as very dirty little insects that can spread disease. What he should have done is catch it then waterboarded it until we knew where the rest were. These insects are terrorist if you are trying to sleep and you have one in the room.
PETA groups have way too much time on their hands.
PETA wanting to get in the news again. It is just a fly and there is over 1 million of them that destroy our picnics and summer recreation activities. So PETA, knock it off!!!
PETA should lead by example and stay in bed all day and night feeding the bedbugs, because whenever they get up to walk, they might step on an unfortunate bug. LOL
The people at PETA (people for the eating of tasty animals) need to find something better to spend their trust funds on. How about healthcare for the whole country????
I thought PETA stood for People Eating Tasty Animals. LOL Never mind those people have entirely to much time on their hands and value animal and now insects more important than humans. They have totally lost there minds. Are people condemning them for not eating meat? It's their business, so why do they try to force their beliefs on us? They mind their business we will mind ours.
I agree this is not "news" however, it's hilarious to me. PETA will come out and voice their "opinion" at any chance they have and to have Obama swat/kill a fly...using the President to just your cause.
Really?? Peta should give it a rest! It's a fly... do we honestly think everytime someone from Peta has a fly near them, they don't attempt to swat at it? Why not spend time doing something that actually has an impact on the world, rather than bitch at our president for swatting at a fly!!
You've got to be kidding! I think that PETA should be banned or at least have a to meet some kind of mental criteria in order to still function. A frigin house fly is not something they should worry about! This makes there organization laughable and something people will not respect at all! How could anyone take them seriously anymore. What a bunch of morons.
But people who work for PETA use insulin, while they disagree with people using insulin. Don't make sense does it? PETA defends and financially support groups like the ALF and the ELF (Both are listed by the FBI as domestic terrorist groups) for bombing animal research labs. PETA does not agree with humans using insulin made from animals, unless it is one of them.
PETA is a sham and should be shut down. I can understand treating animals well. All of my pets are spoiled rotten, but these people go too far. They kill more animals than they adopt out; every year. They killed over 85% of the adoptable animals they "rescued" last year, that was over 13,000 animals killed.
I think this is the first thing Obama has done that I agree with. He pissed off PETA.
But all of you are forgetting the family of the poor little fly. How will the maggots get by without dad bringing home a fresh pile of poop every day? This is a tragedy of the first magnitude.
And next week PETA will be picketing the Centers for Disease Control, because they are plotting to kill billions of swine flu bacteria. You are all welcome to show up and help them save the viruses and bacteria.
The only thing flies are good for is food for other animals. They carry disease and simply are the nastiest creatures around. PETA, if you want to be taken seriously than you all really to address your concerns on more important things like abuse to animals and not filthy and dirty insects.
I also wonder if PETA people would want to live in a rat and roach infested home because you don't want to kill these disease ridden creatures. I bet not. How about living in a home that was infestated with termites or ants? Uh no!
Maybe when the fly showed up and started to annoy Obama, he should have paused the interview, walked over to the corner, droped his pants, and dumped a fresh pile for the fly. Then he could have finished the interview, and PETA would be happy.
I second that. PETA needs to blow it out their @sses. They are ridiculous. Flys do not have feelings. They are small organisms made to eat dead things in the decomposition cycle. Should we protect bacteria too? They are ridiculous hippies.
Well I enjoyed this Funny, maybe they should insert more cartoon stories within the News..(sarcastic) BTW Peta got any Catch and release sand flea traps, Oh and I need your addy so I can release them in your back yard!!
Got that one with the newspaper. Got that next one with a rag. Got the next 4 with flying insect killer. Six with my fly swatter. Then took my time, aimed real good, and got 11 with a HAMMER. Oh, hi, PETA. Idiots.
I'm with you, you would think that an orgnization such as PETA would have bigger and better things to do than to schold the President of the United States of America about swatting a little fly?! I mean what good are flysanyways?
PETA getting involved in any way, shape, or form is disturbing to say the least. While laughable, it is more irritating than anything and completely out of touch. My question: Did someone provoke PETA to respond to Obama swatting the fly or did they feel compelled to respond out of a sense of obligation to all flies? This is quite possibly the most ridiculous response to an innocent gesture by any person, let alone a US president, ever. Congrats PETA, you seem to be cementing a reputation for ignorance and impracticality further distinguishing yourself to the global society as a highly irrelevant organization.
I agree. Flies carry diseases, they land on food and then regurgitate. What kind of an animal is ths? They are pesky and dirty and I think it's stupid that PETA would even consider writing an article on it. I wonder if any of them have ever swatted a fly. My dog even chases and catches them when he can. How ridiculous!
Obama killed a bug who lives off POOP and Decaying animals.
That spread disease and hold no value except to the Medical Examiner to determine cause/time of death!! LOL
A deceased fly is better than a released fly!!
PETA really hit one out of the CRAZY PARK on this one!!
I wonder if PETA would advocate the flea during the bubonic plagues' or the mosquito and its lovely cocktail of malaria? Lets not forget ticks! PETA needs to implement a way for us to "safely" remove ticks from our children, guarenteeing the tick a comfortable experience.
Hey PETA head administrator. Next time you have a family outdoor barbecue (pun intended) and see a fly land on you childs sandwich or mouth after landing on the family pets doo doo, politely ask him or her to stop. And please, keep up the absurdities:)
Will Everyone do me a favor,PLEASE. Catch all the flys, mosquitos, Wasp, Yellow Jackets, and any other Insect and take them to the nearest PETA and release them and tell them it take care of them.
If you can get about 50 to 100 people at one time and do it , Man I would be in my glory.
Thes people are Wacko's
So PETA, if a snake charges you, would you just say, "nice snake, please don't bite me, I'm on your side?!! YEAH RIGHT, YOUR DUMB ASSES WOULD BE BIT AND DEAD!!!!
You know what PETA - SHUT THE HELL UP and go after real folks who kill animals! Like Cheney and his bussies who gear up for hunting season every year and shoot those innocent animals in the head!!
This is just plain stupid, I used to respect PETA, but not anymore - A DAMN FLY?!!!! Give me a freaking break here!!!!!
SO okay here goes, Hey PETA? I guess we need to stop killing the bees for the honey, and the mosquitoes that bite the s--- out of you, and the snakes that crawl behind you and bit the crap out of you, need I go on?!!!! What a bunch of stupid fools you guys are.
Just who is the freaking Director of PETA??? I wish a yellow jacket would bite the ever loving S--T out of his/her ass!!!
The A in PETA is for ANIMALS, a fly is an INSECT! Totally different organism, as defined by the scientific world, and by pretty much ALL OF HUMANITY. Unless you are a devout Buddhist or some devine person who cannot fathom harming something as menial as a housefly, then you would probably do just as the President did and smash the damn thing on your arm and then chuckle at how good your aim is.
How about the thousands of dogs and cats that the PETA-philes "euthanize" every year? Check out the web site for The Center for Consumer Freedom and sign up for their e-mail updates.
Yep, I was really impress with the president's aim, althought my thoughts were "EEeewwww! He better wash his hands! And get that suit cleaned." LOL! I still need to understand the purpose of the flies, because as far as I'm concerned their in the same category of maggots. Germ/bacteria carriers. PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich has truly gone mental!!
Give me a fukn break!!! what PETA needs to worry about is the mexican who are stuffing shark with puppies and dogs!! get the hell outta here i kill those nasty azz flies who carry germ and disease........... as soon as they land!! ppl (PETA) get a LIFE!!
Ha Ha HA HA HA Ha HA HA HA AH Ha HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA AH HA AAAAAAAA HAAAA, Oh My God my stomach hurts from rolling on the floor laughing.
Here's the thing with PETA guys - I will continue to show how they use media for anything:
1. Apparently some thing that they can get Israel and Palestine to becme friends by posting up fliers in their region saying "Give Peas a Chance." Seriously I'm like "What the heck?" - these two countries have been at each others throats since the time of Christ (or Herod/Ceasar/Pompeiians for those who don't believe in Christ), I doubt going vegetarian would make them love each other.
2. Any rancher so far who has had a million dollar landfall (winner of "Survivor" that Megaball winner), they should retire all their animals to pasture and live off their winnings because animals are mistreated at ranches and live in confinement. I'm like "Have you guys been to a farm or ranch? If not, you need to and if so - where was this ranch because not all of them are the same."
3. PETA tells KFC to endorse Controlled Atmosphere Killing - which is lowering the air pressure in the cargo hold of trucks carrying chickens so they die of anoxia, yet tout that people should go vegan. This third one has many fallacies besides being hypocritical to their anti-vegan stance: An animal dies of asphyxiation, which is no oxygen, whereas anoxia is a low oxygen count which can also be corrected by adding back oxygen.
And trust me, as an asthmatic who has suffered from anoxia, I can say that it is NOT painless until you do lose consciousness, and when you do recover, you are sore for hours because your lungs hurt when you breathe.
4. Banning maple syrup to try and force Canadians to stop the seal slaughter. They're actually boycotting a GREEN and VEGAN product to protest seal slaughter. While I agre that there is no reason to be killing seals for anything, I do think that their protest doesn't make sense when there are the Olympics they can boycott and other things to boycott that make a larger imprint.
5. The person who was convicted of cruelty to cats and slaughtering many, going into how criminals started out as being cruel to animals - and that apparently that started when they dissected animals in school.
I mentioned PETA possibly getting an idea to have a contest to get computer geeks to create a program that uses 3-D imagery to do virtual dissections, but my comments were not posted up. That actually is a good idea - and yes, while it would require the killing of one animal so they could get pictures of the organs to accurately draw them for the computer, a few animals outweighs the millions used for dissection each year.
************************
BTW, all of these have been denied to be posted on their site, and I've been told that I am in violation of the rules. Then again - they all have proof that they counter PETA's claims. I guess they want people to be lemurs and follow their philosophies and not think for themselves. Well that or make PETA look like the fools they love to bash.
************************
One day, their antics are going to cause them more harm than good.
What school did this PETA idiot go to? Where I come from, a fly was considered an insect ( a pest, no less), not a " small animal. Now that I think about it, kind of like those PETA a--holes...........
I eat meat. Lots of it. Rare, if it's beef. I eat eggs, butter, cheese, and drink lots of milk. I eat fish.
I wear leather shoes when they look cool and I can afford them. Never gonna change.
I don't bother catching flies, or swatting them - I'm not fast enough in a lot of cases. I hang fly strips. They starve. I got no problem with that. My home is not a menagerie - at least not for nasty bugs.
Lots of living things carry disease or are poisonous. Reducing their numbers saves people's lives.
I rescued my dog from a no-kill shelter. I give her her shots and preventative medicines so that parasites and little beasties don't take up residence inside her and kill her. She is not a petrie dish for parasites.
Get a life. Have a Philly cheesesteak. And remember no one, nothing, gets out of here alive.
I remember the time PETA attacked cooking mama for promoting the slaughter of animals because meat was an ingredient in many of the dishes in the game.
They are nuts who drive away people who do have concerns about animal cruelty with their extremist views.
I think all the Group activists like them are getting way out of hand. They should stay a night in the Minnesota summer and see how many flys or flying pests they swat!
Do I need to learn to float over the ground to avoid stepping on ants and other bugs? Must I put food out to keep various critters from starving? No way shall I swat a gnat at a picnic. Wait, ban worms from fishing..oops no fishing allowed!!! I hereby vow to make pools of stagnant water for miscitoes to breed, leave rotting food in my kitchen for maggots, put stingers back into bees after I am stung, open my attic to bats, let termites feast upon my timbers til a room collapses. Be careful Raid. I may come to your plants and picket your inhumanity towards disease ridden pests.
I'm a proud omnivore, I love my meat, and I believe that it's very possible to eat meat and be an animal lover at the same time. I know that hypocrisy is just one of the many qualities we humans have, and biologically we are animals too so who gives a flying @!$%# if we eat meat? I get pissed off when I hear about cases of animal cruelty, but getting mad over a fly being swatted is extreme, even for PETA.
PETA, all the members, should be tossed into a pit of camel spiders, then we film it, broadcast it all over the world, and see how crazy about animals they are then.
I am making a stand here and now, I hope others join me. Every time I read PETA in any news story or hear it on the news I will eat at least one meal of veal. @!$%# you PETA.
Good grief it's a fly! A germ carrying, disgusting fly, Are they trying to tell me that when there is flies on there food or in their house they don't swat at them? With all the other things out there in this world, like hungry children and homeless human beings, they are actually picking the fly to stand up for? I will never be able to look at a fly or maggot again without thinking of PETA.
This is beyond ridiculous. I would like to go to a PETA member's house and release a jar of flies, see how humane they will be then. Ugh. Get over yourselves.
Peta has been a laughable for years for their silly extremists views. They don't seem to care about humans at all. We have homeless starving children here in our own country and the rest of the world but they arre more focused on a fly. I say we release Peta out into the Rainforest where there are flies as big as bats!lol They'll prob. resort to cannibalism before they would try to hunt their own food! Peta is a joke. True animal cruelty is not :(
Talk about going off the deep end. Flies bring disease end of story....what's next feeling sorry for viruses and bacteria too.........they are smaller than flies and it seems PETA is wanting to worry about the 'smallest and least sympathetic'. Well viruses and bacteria are small and not much sympathy for sure. Next they will picket the drug manufacturers who provide flu vaccinations and other medicines...we are killing living things. Never mind that their purpose is to kill us or make us sick.
I am not a fan of Obama but this is stretching things a bit too far. Hopefully he has a good sense of humor and takes the BS that PETA spews with a grain of salt.
I think you are all missing the point. He said "pretty impressive". Shows once again his arrogance. Also his callousness. If we don't stay in line with him he is capable of just reaching out and swatting us down.
For all of you Obama haters.....I wonder what part of Obama's genetic pool made him so proficient at killing flies. (My bad)
Personally, I saw the film clip and I was amazed. I actually was impressed. Have any of you actually tried to swat a fly with your bare hand? The President showed a great display of hand and eye coordination. Way to go Mr. President!
Wait, ban worms from fishing..oops no fishing allowed!!!
I don't see why fishing would be banned - they seem to say "Don't kill the sea kittens."
(Yes, for some reason they think fish are actually sea kittens - they named them that in order to try to show that "you wouldn't kill your cat - so why kill fish for food?")
Screw PETA. Obama just swatted an annoying fly; he could have just caught it and popped it into his mouth with a little Ranch dressing. LOL!!!
No no, can't do that, eating a fly would be non-vegan!
I thought PETA had reached the depth when they protested the "abuse" of fish that were already dead (http://www.kirotv.com/news/19706112/detail.html), but now, defending "flies' 'rights'"???
PETA...you've gone too far this time. You should be labelled a terrorist organization so the people of this country -- most of whom do not agree with you -- can take action to put your inane bumbling to an end...
The process is difficult, as I learned early in my visit with the Pirahã. One morning, while applying bug repellent, I was watched by an older Pirahã man, who asked Everett what I was doing.
Eager to communicate with him in sign language, I pressed together the thumb and index finger of my right hand and weaved them through the air while making a buzzing sound with my mouth. Then I brought my fingers to my forearm and slapped the spot where my fingers had alighted.
The man looked puzzled and said to Everett, “He hit himself.” I tried again—this time making a more insistent buzzing. The man said to Everett, “A plane landed on his arm.”
When Everett explained to him what I was doing, the man studied me with a look of pitying contempt, then turned away. Everett laughed. “You were trying to tell him something about your general state—that bugs bother you,” he said.
“Native people never talk that way, and they could never understand it. Bugs are a part of life.”
It just shows how void, noisy and empty the lives of many among you have become that a simple fly, spider or tiny insect becomes an obsession for man to kill.
400 years ago there were no diseases of which you speak today. Maybe your lifestyle has something to do with the development of diseases all together. You have become a very noisy stupid species with an insatiable hunger to kill and destroy. Maybe you can take some time out and ponder why that is... In your loud and noisy opinion PETA is wrong and Obama has a great aim.... Pitiful creatures you are.
Peta never is right, they pick the wrong things to battle over. I am a vegan and even I think who cares about that fly. Remember who wanted to put down all those Vick dogs, with out giving any of them a chance. And now their protecting some stupid fly. Those people need to get their stuff straight. I personally wish they would go away. They put down like 21,000 dogs last year. Tell me those bastards care about animals.
I thought I had heard it all. They need to find other means of saving the universe starting with human beings that are hungry, sick or whatever the case may be. This was so uncalled for. I don't know what this world is coming to. But I can tell you after reading this--it is scary. These people need say nothing at all if this is the best that they can come up with. Flies are pestilence as was and is leprosy.
Oh c'mon people. You had to know PETA would make some sort of statement the second this aired on TV. Heck, I knew it the second I saw it.
Flies, like misquitos carry disease. So would they have made such a fuss had it been a misquito carrying malaria? Besides, in some areas of the country a bug zapper and a twelve pack are an evening's entertainment!! I'm surprised PETA isn't picketing the manufactuerers of bug repellent and zappers.
PETA has great ideals, but their implementation is so wrong. It's like when I went to a fishing tournament and these PETA members got in boats and went around beating the top of the water with cane poles to scare away the fish. Ridiculous.
Until then I had no idea what PETA really meant. I thought PETA meant: PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS. LOL
zapain, they claim on their site they were going to let it slide as Obama is human and makes "mistakes," but when the media contacts them of course they'll respond.
I personally blame the media more than PETA for this becoming a big hubbub (though PETA could've said NO - it ain't that hard). They seem to just want to be Obama's whores and give him as much attention as possible.
Auteur, that video is from The Onion, a satire news site (they've done many of these - they're almost an online version of "MAD" magazine at times). PETA was trying to use it to show how horses are pretty much supposedly killed as soon as they can no longer run in races or breed. While some cases that's true (sadly), that's not always the case.
Then again - the group is so naive they do a satire comic on how shelters kill pets, yet if you do an online search you find that they themselves have killed thousands of pets as a "humane" approach. (Of course, commenting about that on their board is removed).
And, then again as well - they support controlled atmosphere killing of chickens - and protest restaurants to use this; however, this is contrary to their comments about going vegan.
No matter how you slice it or asphyxiate it, killing is still killing and by their standards is cruel. This particular challenge to their views will get you an e-mail stating what CAK is a humane approach - and again, it will not be posted on their board.
Well, there is a third - showing the effect of nerve gasses using monkeys. While I can say there are options to showing this (i.e. why not use the filming that they found/made and make it into a video for educational purposes?), they do imply that it would be better for our soldiers to find out the hard way - have it tested on them or experience it in battle without knowing how to treat the symptoms before it's too late.
Ergo, I'm lead to believe that if you can prove that PETA is hypocritical and out there for the money and ego-trip (harsh, but I've only seen maybe one thing they've been successful in changing - places not using glue traps for rats), you will be censored and given a lecture on the benefits of controlled atmosphere KILLING over KILLING in general.
Mind you - I respect animals birth to death (no matter what type befalls them). I know where my meat comes from, and I do deplore the use of animals for just their fur, horns/head (deer), or glands (musk - doubly when they have a chemical variation). That's why I will wear leather, suede and rabbit (though I haven't here) because I know all three are also used for food.
The video was just disgusting, and underneath it it said, "They should send her to China where she can be ground up into dog food." A human's broken leg can heal, a horse's doesn't always heal. If a horse breaks its leg it almost never heals and even if it does heal the horse will never walk properly or run again and they'll just be in pain.
Another PETA issue - they're protesting at a Southern Baptist Convention against Chick-Fil-A killing chickens for food (along the lines of "PETA reminds Chick-Fil-A 'Thou Shall Not Kill")
As I warned them when I posted there, I am also putting my response to their idea here so it will be read:
PETA as well as this blogger are frankly naive for protesting this at the Southern Baptist Convention. Chick-Fil-A does not have ties to said group, even if they are the only restaurant chain that does close on Sundays.
Your "For Christ's Sake Go Vegan" is not only blasphemous, but uninformed. Christ DID eat fish when he was on this Earth. That is a biblical fact. The owner does have a strong religious faith, but he does keep that personal - in fact the reason they close on Sundays is - and I quote "to spend time with family or self." Meaning, no mention of church.
Many people have been able to get an education thanks to help from Cathy's donations. Plus, you want to point fingers at cruelty? - point them at other chicken joints because they don't take care to not use non-allergenic peanut oil in their foods. (Note - well, I'm sure they probably don't and use something like lard - which is another animal by-product, but you get my point - they take the care to keep people healthy and not have an allergic reaction.)
They too offer some - not a lot but some - vegan options. Meaning - you CAN get the waffle fries there, because they use peanut oil that is also not allergenic.
Be thankful that a business does show some compassion for workers and people they serve. They're better than a lot of chicken stores here in the U.S. on many levels.
(Plus - again - I find the whole thing arrogant on your part since PETA advocates controlled atmosphere killing. Slice it or dice it - that still is killing and still contrary to your views.)
Simply put Auteur - and they're naive enough to think the cases and facts are locked away where no one can find them.
It's sad too - they're saying that milk has "pus" in it because of somatic cells. They also use THEIR link to tout this.
What they don't know is somatic cells are (source Biology-Online.org - a more reliable source, but even Wiki says this): "The word “somatic” is derived from the Greek word soma, meaning “body”. Hence, all body cells of an organism – apart from the sperm andeggcells, the cells from which they arise (gametocytes) and undifferentiatedstem cells – are somatic cells."
Meaning - we and animals are supposedly all made of pus.
I won't even begin to go into the hot dog issue they mention, but obviously they're vegans and have never actually READ a hot dog package to know what is in it. It isn't chicken bones.
Mind you - at least they got gelatin and one other one right: But that was TWO out of FIVE they had totally correct. The other three were wrong or inaccurate.
Plus, they're going after Chick-Fil-A by protesting at a Southern Baptist Convention (because S. Truett Cathy is a southern Baptist). Not only does Cathy NOT make a huge issue about religion (even though we all know there are themes about it, such as them being closed on Saturdays), they fail to realize that Jesus more than likely ate meat (fish), and their slogan "For Christ's Sake, Give Vegetarianism a Chance" is blasphemous.
Then again - I don't know why I take these protests seriously. This is a group touting vegetarianism yet advocates Controlled Atmosphere Killing. They're failing in their protests because us "Simple minds" know that they're being hypocrites with that stance.
What's next - sympathy for the mosquitoes that cause malaria, and for the parasites that cause river blindness, blharzia, elephantiasis and death? Please! Has PETA got nothing better to carp on about?
Akua, that's what I was going to say. Should I not swat the mosquito that I find munching on my blood? What about the tick that may have lyme disease? Or how about those spiders? Give me a break, this is ridiculous.
Message to PETA - I think you are a worthy animal rights organization but, P-L-E-A-S-E, this is RIDICULOUS. A ploy just to get your name in the headlines. This makes PETA look inane and as though they have no real interest in their stated cause which is the welfare of animals. In the future, concentrate your efforts on helping neglected, starved, brutalized and injured animals. Stick with factory farming, which is a cause worthy of your attention. Absolutely no one gives a darn about a fly, or a mosquito. There are billions of them and they are a scourge on mankind for the most part. If PETA desires credibility, it will need to drop some of its way out left tactics that only lead the general public to think it is a wacked out, freaky organization.
I for one appreciated the laugh. It just makes it that much more fun when someone cracks a PETA joke when something like that happens, and then PETA actually does it.
Next headline... "Use of Fly Swatters Ruled as Asault With a Deadly Weapon".
Absolutely - PETA makes themselves look like a bunch of lunatics and they wonder why they are not taken seriously. A HOUSEFLY - they make a big stink about a HOUSEFLY. When I heard about Obama swatting that fly, I just knew PETA would come out and cry about this.
You know what's funny? Apart from the ham and cheese on my pizza at lunch, I'd actually be a candidate for PETA's man of the day. My wife asked me to get rid of a spider in the bathroom this morning. Despite the hour, I took the spider outside rather than kill it.
I didn't think of it until just now. Hmmm. I guess there's a subconscious acknowledgement of a thing's right to exist, no matter how lowly. Maybe it's the long indoctrinated belief that anything that eats bugs is a friend. Either way, I guess it's generally good to not kill something you don't have to.
I still think PETA's lost their minds. But, in a very general sense, they are right... They're still out of touch, though.
These people are nut jobs, hey people get a life do some real good visit old people in homes read to kids in the hospital. Don't let the world see how nuts you are by having a fit over a fly. Good god has half the planet gone nuts.
Sometimes I can see PETA's point about the treatment of animals, other times I think they can get a little carried away with themselves and their protests become silly. This time I am totally opposed to their viewpoint. Flies are not sentient beings, they are disease vectors and the fewer we have buzzing around the better. I freely admit to killing flies, mosquitoes, fleas on my dog, spiders in the garage, and ants in the kitchen. If I find a cricket in the house, I usually try to take it outside safely (good luck you know) and I don't kill off ladybugs and things. Otherwise, I am in favor of killing vermin that transmit disease and breed in filth. I support the president in this course of action at least. Just sayin'
I just knew the minute it was caught on national TV that he would catch heat from these idiots. What line is drawn on stupidity for standing up for stupid things like this? The PETA organization validity really is questionable if they are going to make a big issue over this.
As soon as he did it I said "Now watch PETA put up a big stink about that!" and lo and behold, here they are. I am all for taking out disease vectors whenever you can, seeing as how we can't afford to get sick until healthcare reform happens . . . someday. Just sayin'
I'd love to see PETA do a campaign telling people not to kill mosquitos, including the ones that could be carrying malaria or west nile virus or other diseases.
Yep, I knew it was coming, but what I don't get is that PETA didn't say jack sh*#@ when Sarah was at that turkey farm with a turkey being slaughtered behind her no less and yet the President swats a nasty azz fly and they've got all kinds of mess to say? WTH is wrong with this organization? They had some good causes over the years with domesticated and endangered animals, but this is just too damn much!!! Why the hell didn't they say something about the President wolfin' down those burgers :-) Think of all the cows that helped that cause. PETA just wanted some publicity at the expense of the President and they ended up making themselves look like idiots over a damn fly.
-Someone should swat these dumbasses. They cry and scream if you kll a fly that is nasty and carries germs but, wont say a word about all the babies that are being killed just because they might interfere with your life or stop you from sleeping with the next forty guys that come along.
but steech, think of all those poor insects that are going to suffer now that you released that awful spider to kill indiscriminately .peta is going to hate you now.
Danwill, Point noted. I think PETA's mandate expires at the human/spider boundary though. They are not AETA (Arachnids for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). I think my little spider buddy has their implicit goodwill to grow strong on some delicious bugs protein, for her babies' sake.
PETA hurts itself with this silliness.. now they object to throwing dead fish in Seattle.... Need to Get their priorities straight..
I noticed that too, and bashed the group as a whole for a variety of reasons. Then again, the only group they support claims from Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which reads exactly like a PETA group.
Never mind that doctors tell vegans they have to take vitamins because they're not getting all nutrients from just veggies. (BTW, same goes true with just carnivores (more meat than veggies), therefore it's best to eat a balanced diet).
I wonder if they have a funeral for every bug splattered on their windshield or stuck in their radiator fins.
Don't give them any ideas!!! The next thing you know they'll want to jail every driver who kills an innocent fly with their car, then invent something that prevents a car from hitting a fly...which would mean a huge source of income for them, so we could be subjected to their stupidity for years to come!
Since they're going to send Obama some sort of "humane fly catcher" to use in place of a fly swatter (or his hand!), it brings to mind some other idiocies that PETA could address. They have compared the meat packing industry and poultry farms to the concentration camps of Nazi Germany...I wonder if they feel the same about those bug zappers that electrocute flies when you're out camping? They would have hated me and all the other kids who, when we were small, caught red and black ants and made them fight and kill in a mayonnaise jar! Here's one for ya...what about the flies that are undoubtedly around the fish that are thrown in Seattle (http://www.kirotv.com/news/19706112/detail.html) at the Pike Place Market? Using "intelligent, sensitive animals who deserve better than to be torn from their ocean homes" (PETA's description of fish!) as a tool to assassinate flies? The worst of both worlds! Two death sentences for that "murder"! Don't swat that mosquito! Maybe it's your destiny to get malaria! You just murdered the carrier!
What's next? PETP, "People for the Ethical Treatment of Plants"? No, don't eat that salad, you'd be guilty of being an accessory to the murder of that head of lettuce! Stop the unethical treatment of apples! The produce aisle is the next place they'd compare to a concentration camp...rows and rows of innocent vegetables, lined up for their murders...fruits, nuts...stop the abuse of walnuts! Eating that bowl of oatmeal is cruelty to oats! No, you can't put sugar on that, it's abuse of sugar cane plants!
Then all animal life would die on this planet, leaving the plants to finally live in peace...
Never mind that doctors tell vegans they have to take vitamins because they're not getting all nutrients from just veggies. (BTW, same goes true with just carnivores (more meat than veggies), therefore it's best to eat a balanced diet).
But how many vegans do take the doctor's advice? The carnivores of the "human world" eat meat along with veggies and fruits and grains, that makes us omnivores but vegans see us as carnivores. To be healthy you have to eat a balanced diet - meat, fruits, veggies, dairy and grains - which vegans don't eat so the majority of them are very unhealthy. We didn't evolve to be herbivores.
I agree Auteur - a balanced diet is the best. You can be a vegan and die at a young age and be an omnivore and live to be 100. So many factors come into play that I think it's silly when I read groups such as Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine tout just a vegan diet while doctors say to eat a balanced diet.
Also, though PRMC says they are not a front for any organization - they do read a lot like PETA. Plus - whenever I ask a PETA member to give me a non-PRMC stance on vegetarianism, my comments are not posted or just go unanswered anyway if they manage to make the grade.
Dave, you said it best yourself, "Tasty Animals". Fact: other high thinking earth life forms such as primates and dolphines eat meat and fish. First, what is the issue with eating meat? Second, don't you think an individual or group can take their philosphy too far? When one starts discussing the rights of insects I believe the line has been crossed.
Fact: other high thinking earth life forms such as primates and dolphines eat meat and fish.
True, earth life forms do... But Vulcans don't! Well, most of the time anyway.
If dolphines are so high thinking how are they getting caught in nets? Seriously, that's the dumbest arguement I've ever heard.
*facepalm* If humans are so smart, why do they step on landmines? Quite frankly, because they are unable to detect them with their senses 99% of the time. One of the ways dolphins figure out where they are is echolocation, a technique which is especially useful once you get below a well lit surface. Objects which are primarily holes (nets, wind mill blades, tennis rackets) are nearly invisible to them. This is why (IIRC) you can hit a bat fairly easily with a tennis racket. It is also why so many bats get owned by wind turbines.
PETA is compromised of people with serious emotional issues. They support domestic terrorism all the while KILLING animals.
Can't argue with that. Sure there are organizations which are worse, but of them all PETA must rank among the funniest as far as their antics go. However, their reasons for doing so is probably quite a bit more valid than most other extremist groups who kill for magic sky daddies or because of race (an arbitrary and quite made up grouping system actually).
hey, flies are not animals !! their insects, insects that transfer parasites etc to where ever they land..their nasty and disgusting, they feed and start larvae/ maggot eggs from decrepit/ decayed sources like dog pooh poo and dead animals and other decomposing nasty stuff..then they land in your food/ dinner etc..sounds like Peta is seeking National attention, personally I feel there out of touch and should see a shrink..okay another 6 billion R&D study that says, they can be our next fuel source..jeez Gods, what's next ??? haven't we been through this before ??
not a nobama fan at all, but swatting a fly no big deal. I guess the lib, tree hugging animal rights Peta will now vote Republican. To my knowledge bush never swatted a fly on TV.
Hey Peta, I have small black ants in my kitchen, I have been stepping on them and starving them. How soon can I expect you to come lie in my front yard crying over this? I also dump black pepper on fire ant hills in my yard. I know when you come protest at my house lie on the fire ant hills. Show those bugs you love them.
PETA wants us all to become vegans, huh?Tell me, people. How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a blade of grass? If Ugg the caveman had been a member of PETA, a cave bear would have eaten his a%s, and he would never have invented fire or the wheel. Remember, PETA, "There is a place in God's world for all animals. It's on the kitchen table, next to the mashed potatoes." 'nuff said. By the way, for a loser a-hole, for once you did something right, Comrade Obama.
Hey, Skygirl - you volunteering ? if so, I'm joining PETA.
and..Chucky - when I'm getting laid, the only fly I want my partner to be fixated on...is mine !
Actually Peta is one of the worst for euthanizing pets. If you want to stop animal research-which is not helpful in any way to humans you can join PCRM, or the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. This group is made of of physicians that know animal research does not help humans, Animals never respond the way humans do to medications. So the use of them is unecessary. It is a bussiness, people make money raising the animals for research, the researchers are paid by companies so they can say that this medication (what ever it is) has been tested on animals. That is all it is. Peta is indeed a bunch of weirdos but animal research is cruel and unnecessary.
Like the rest of you, I swat flies, and eat meat, but I am telling you that Animal testing is not helpful to humans-do a bit of research, animal testing has never saved a human life, but it is pure torture to the animal.
Agree with all the above comments. Saw the "kill" on the news. Our President has pretty good aim, for sure. I've just lost a lot of respect for PETA and what they supposedly stand for. I guess there weren't any circuses out there to berate this week.
I hope he uses a double barrel 12 gauge shotgun to kill the next one. And does it on national tv. Or blow up a well filled fly trap with one great big ole firecracker. PETA=IDIOTS. Oh he** here come the fly police.
But if you give proof of how contradictory their group is, you are a moron and your comments will not be posted up. Example, their current "10% wool" comic is touting euthanized animals at shelters - yet this group has been convicted of illegally euthanizing animals. My response was not posted up because clearly it's the truth and they want to have people throw their dollars to the media-hounds (or media-whores as some would say), instead of actually giving it to their local shelters where the money - and all 100 percent of it (not maybe 50% or less that happens when you give to any organization).
Yeah, I guess if you have a tapeworm, you should just keep feeding it and not have it removed.
Of course, I have never seen one in the wild, so I guess it wouldn't live very long in the woods...
How ridiculous!
I respect all life, also, but if an ant stumbles in my path, I will not go out of my way to avoid it - I'd never be able to walk on my sidewalk!
I do try and relocate spiders or ladybugs to the outside, if they're in my house, but ants, flies, mosquitoes, wasps, ticks on my dogs - they don't leave my house alive.
I guess you could donate a tapeworm to a new PETA host body. I really wouldn't doubt it if one of them actually volunteered for such a thing.
Tapeworm transplants... Sounds like a good way to lose some excess weight!
*puts on his Billy Mays voice* "Do you need to lose weight fast? DO you have a wedding, reunion, or just want to shed some pounds? Well I have the solution for you! With our new tape-in-u pill, you can have all that and more! Just swallow a single pill, and watch as your waistline shrinks in mere days! Eat as much as you like, this program will handle it all! Not only will it help you lose the weight, it will keep it off for years!" *queue testimonials given by models* "Our callers are standing by! Call now and you also get a free 'save the worms' T-shirt!"
They actually are quite dangerous. My brother spent years on a submarine in the navy, and he said that PETA was a disaster. Most of the time people don't know where submarines go, but there are times that their 'missions' aren't so secret, and PETA will show up. They hate subs because on rare occassions a shark or dolphin might get into one of the torpedo tubes. The seaman then shoot them back out (who wants to deal with an angry shark face-to-face?). This actually happened on my brother's sub once, and he said that they immediately shut the shoot and fired it. He said it was pretty scary. He told us about times that subs would be doing trials to test it's ability to stay in one piece (risky trials), and PETA would show up and try to get in the way. They would actually risk the lives of 100+ of our soldiers in order to prevent a shark from being shot from a torpedo tube.
They value animals over all else, and don't care if humans are harmed as a result. I'd feel a little better if they at least saw us as equals.
Anybody else see a BIG problem, animal having more rights than people?
P.S. Give $$ to a local shelter or rescue group; they need the money and they areu aren't getting any from PETA or the INhumane Society of the United States.
Educate yourselves on organizations with pockets over flowing with $$ that claim to have animal welfare as their top prorities.
Have you seen the electric fly swatters? They are great! Fly kind of blows up and makes a spark. Plus you can kill them in mid air, don't have to make contact with a solid object.
PETA had a bad name before this. I remember about 8-9 years ago they were threatening to dress in bunny suits during the Michigan firearm deer season to disrupt the hunters. I think they called it off because a lot of us here in MI are afraid of oversize bunnies and would shoot at them.
a fly is an insect period. Not worth the news and PETA knows this. Their aim is to get publicity and they've done it. Now if they want to cry here is something they can cry about - I put a mouse trap under my sink and killed that little vermin! SNAP ! Dead little critter, he/she should have stayed out of my house!
This is a farce. PETA should be standing against atrocities like puppy mills and circuses that beat their animals, not the President that swatted a fly!
Thank you, StephAce! this is not news...PETA being offended by someone killing a fly? don't they know how fast they reproduce? you're so right...I was going to say that their time is better spent investigating dog-fights and animal beatings....improper treatment of entertainment-used animals. flys will be around long after we're all gone from the face of the earth...
I think it became news not just because PETA went "OK, free advertising for us" (As they have clearly mentioned on their site that they were going to ignore what happened as the president is human), but also because it's Obama and we are bombarded daily about the celebrity issues he deals with and not the real political issues to keep people from really paying attention to what's going on in our country.
HORROR upon horror!!!! The President of the United States KILLED a fly.. Not only did he have the audacity to commit this atrocity to begin with but it was captured on national television and will cause small children to have nightmares for weeks!!!! Now here comes PETA.. Several hundred of them marching on the White House carrying placards protesting this crime against flies!!! The secret service is gearing up for protests - as are the DC police... I suppose PETA will want President Obama to apologise to the fly's family and ensure that the remains recieve a good Christian (Oppsss - can't say that anymore - not politically correct - might offend some fly someplace in the world) Let's try "proper burial" in accordance with the fly's family's spiritual preference.. America mourns this horrifying act..
I have been joking about PETA for years but cannot do it any more.. If any organization will stoop to this level to get thier name out into the public eye and ear I cannot give them any more publicity - even with that old standby - - PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals)..
Is this newsworthy?? Yes - with what is going on in the country and in the world we need light news to laugh about - and the president doing what we do on a daily basis and seeing the backlash from it is humorous.. PETA members need to spend more time reading and doing family activities so that they will not come to the forefront with stupidity such as this...
And by the way - Nice overhand swat Mr. President..
Yes I stayed up last night to think of an appropriate comment for this..
I think someone wasnt on their meds when they decided to protest this one. I doubt anyone in their right mind will take PETA seriously after this. Not that alot did mind you. Next we will have People for the Ethical Treatment of Vegetables and Minerals. Each time I read an article where PETA has protested about the treatment of something I think of a bunch of chimpanzees on stools typing away.....really what a bunch of fools.
I agree - I've listed earlier in this blog the recent news stories PETA's bastardized to use to their advantage and get their name out. My favorite is the current Palestine-Israel issues and them wanting to put signs up in both countries saying "Give Peas a Chance." Obviously they do not understand that the two have been at each other's throats since the day of Nero and Pompeii before the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. I don't think chickpeas will make end the conflict.
Makes me wonder just exactly how much of member's monies actually go to help animals and not to PETA's ridiculous campaigns.
The idiotic press made it a big story in Russia saying that Obama by killing a fly showed his true mean colours..... What a bunch of crap! There is a saying: How do you recognize a fervent animal lover? By intence hatred for humans.
Dmitri - You know that's not true. I love animals and I love (most) humans, as well. You can't apply your statement to all animal lovers. PETA, maybe, but most humans who love animals, no.
However, I don't really consider a fly to be an animal - it's an insect!
Dmitri I am always reminded of the Michael Douglas line in Wall St "One thing about WASP, they love animals, can't stand people". I love animals and don't trust most humans but PETA is completely off the chain on this one.
I wonder what kind of clever name Ben and Jerry's would come up with to market ice cream made from women's breast milk? The possibilities seem endless.....
****
hmmm. ok, let's see:
BARBRA'S BOOBALICIOUS BOUNTY: Vanilla breast milk ice cream with big mounds of breast-shaped chocolate chunks...
BERRY FANTITSTIC: Chocolate ice cream with layers of berries in a breast-milk glaze...
HUBBA-HUBBA: Chocolate ice cream with swirls of strawberry breast milk...
Yes, I know -- only a perverted mind could come up with these... I confess... but PETA started it! :D :D
Shouldn't PETA practice what it preaches? I mean don't they kill flea's and other vermin at their shelters, and how many thousands of animals do they put to death each year??
The real story about what goes on a PETA will turn your stomach......
Because of animal over crowding they have to put thousands of animals to death each year, and I have read that on this news outlet..... my question is...
With all the Millions they rake in from the Soft hearted suckers, how come PETA doesn't own an animal Sanctuary the size of Arizona so that the animals they claim to care for so much have a place to live????
We know what it is all about, or should, and it's not about the animals, the four footed kind that is......
1. Vdacs website shows that they have killed over 90% of the animals that are put into their care and only adopted like 7% or less. Yet, they keep saying they are not a shelter. If they are not a shelter, why are they taking in animals and adopting them out like one? FYI: Vdacs is the website that shows all the animal shelter reports in Virginia. Reports such as euthanasia, death (died while at facility), adoption, neuter/spayed, # of cats/dogs, etc., transfers, etc., etc. PeTA submits their report every year and it is disturbing compared to other shelters. Extremely high euthanasia rate and extremely low adoption rate.
2. It is about the money. Majority of PeTa's donations go to the media, protests, legal fees, etc, not to the animals.
Eddie: Possibly. But animal shelters nationwide put millions of pets down every year too. People insist on getting a new pet and then abandoning it - either on the street, to starve, or directly drop it off at the nearest pound because they can't take care of it anymore. The unwanted pet problem is a dirty big secret in the western world.
My understanding based on an e-mail from a PETA representative is that the reason PETA euthanizes many of the animals turned in to its headquarters in Virginia is that they are horribly mistreated animals that are suffering immensely. They apparently receive many of the worst of the worst.
PETA also is responsible for many animals being saved.
Did the email from PETA also explain why they have been fined repeatedly for illegally DUMPING the animals they put down. I'm sure they get some really bad cases. But statistically I find it hard to believe that NINETY PERCENT of the animals they get are in such bad shape that they HAVE to be put down.
You're telling me, that out of 2,000 animals brought to PeTA, 90% can't be saved? There is something REALLY wrong then. I don't even think vets put down that many animals that are brought in a year (which is the same time frame that PeTA has done).
Compare it to the ASPCAs in Virginia. Hell, just the one ASPCA that is in the same location as the PeTA HQ or closest to it. Nowhere close to 90% euthanasia rate.
Adria Hinkle, 28, and Andrew Cook, 26, were employed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals when they were caught June 15, 2005, dumping euthanized animals into a trash bin at a shopping center in Ashoskie. They had faced 21 charges of felony animal cruelty, seven counts of littering and three counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.
Another account speaks of the animals being put down in the back of a van. And yet another shows the contract with a crematorium where PETA saves up the slain animals in a freezer and brings them in bulk to save money.
When PeTA caught Tyson employees abusing their chickens, Tyson fired those employees.
When PeTA employees break the law and started to kill healthy animals in a van and dumped the bodies, PeTA didn't fire them. Even more irony: PeTA states that YOU can't own an animal, because that is slavery (property). But according to PeTA's lawyers during the trial, once the animals were handed over to PeTA (from vets or from other people), the became PeTA's 'property.'
So, PeTA doesn't want you to call animals property, but they can? There are transcripts online from the trial and the PeTA lawyer does call those animals 'property.'
PETA is a terrorist organization that fools thousands into believing only a part of what they are really selling. If you have a soft spot for animals, many people think that organizations like PETA and the Humane Society of the US (HSUS) are aligned with there ideals. When nothing could be further from the truth. There has been numerous laws being proposed and in some States and cities passed that both HSUS and PETA are directly involved in. The ultimate goal of all animal rights-inspired legislation is a step toward the elimination of animal ownership in America. Each law, ordinance and regulation is merely the first step toward a tightening of the noose in this incremental approach to making America a nation without dogs, cats and other domesticated animals. Each step is designed to lead to another, until no more animals are left.
pgcl, thank you for putting up the link to petakillsanimals.com. Anyone who would really like proof of how hypocritical PETA is, should check out this site. Warning: it's pretty horrifying stuff.
My understanding based on an e-mail from a PETA representative is that the reason PETA euthanizes many of the animals turned in to its headquarters in Virginia is that they are horribly mistreated animals that are suffering immensely. They apparently receive many of the worst of the worst.
James, in all sincerity, don't trust what a PETA rep will tell you. News reports have shown that they have killed healthy animals too because it was too "Cruel" to have them in a shelter.
I actually had someone e-mail me from that group when I talked about my stance to their advocating Controlled atmosphere killing as a "Humane" way of killing chickens for food.
Two problems with their findings - 1. Anoxia is quite painful to deal with. If you are suffering an asthma attack, you can suffer from the effects of anoxia and it's one reason you can pass out from the attack (I've experienced this and yes, it hurts before and after you're unconscious - after it's treated your lungs hurt when you breathe) and 2. Why are they advocating the death of chickens IN ANY WAY when they say that they want people to be vegetarians?
The ones killed in NC were all youg healthy adoptable dogs and cats that they "rescued" from shelters and killed in their van. They had a special on HBO where it showed Newkirk talk a guy into giving up his American Pitbull Terrier. The Dog was in great health. The next morning they were joking about killing it.
Jegossett and mel-680625, thanks for your information.
If PETA is indeed taking and killing healthy animals I strongly oppose that. I am not a member of PETA. But I would hope that is not a common practice for them, and that it is completely stopped.
Unfortunately it is common practice for PETA. Since 2004 PETA has killed almost 60,000 adoptable cats and dogs. Many of the "rescues" they get are from new PETA members that they talk into bringing in their animals because it is wrong to own them. Many they get from no-kill shelters. Even aet adoption agencies have been conned by PETA to give up some of their animals so PETA can "give them a better life." Only for the animals to be destroyed. This is why in 2006 PETA HQ purchased and installed in it's Norfolk HQ a large restaurant style walk in freezer. It is a good place to store the animal bodies until they can be cremated.
If you want to help the animals or donate money to someone. Give to the ASPCA.
James, if this helps any, all of the cases we've cited are matters of public record - you can search for yourself online. However, do be cautious and not trust what you find on Wiki: a. anyone can say anything there and b. the cases are also located on more reliable sites. ;)
And I want to echo what I've recently read here - don't give your money to PETA, as they seem to use it more for publicity than actual cause. Give it to your local animal shelter or the ASPCA (which is shown a lot on "Animal Planet" if you'd like to at least see some of what they do). They will use that money a lot more efficiently to help animals than what we see PETA do.
i thought this was all pretty ethical. this is exactly what a fly should get, smashed! just as a cow should be ground up into cheesburgers. peta you are kooks. go eat some soybean or something and leave the rest of the world alone.
Wouldn't you know that Peta had to say something, don't they know that flies can spread disease, So Peta keep maybe you should have your facts before you spout off.
This is not news. Glad to see Obama has good aim.
PETA?...oh yeah...those idiots that protest eating meat while they wear leather pants and aligator boots. take them to the zoo and put them in the lions den...maybe they can talk him into forming AETP ( animals for the ethical treatment of people)
LOL
I agree telmom32 with your comment #1.
Neither Obama's fly killing nor PETA's gift was a major news event.
The Iranian-election situation, the Somalian violence, and numerous other issues around the world seem much more important. But, I do support PETA's basic message of seeking to treat all creatures humanely.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D DeMilo, regarding your comment #1.1:
I doubt that PETA members typically wear clothing made from animals.
PETA members don't wear animal material. They're the nuts who think killing scientists in defense of animals is appropriate. They think that since animals are killed to test life-saving medications, it's okay to kill the doctors and scientists who are trying to save HUMAN lives.
PETA is full of terrorists.
Besides displaying how psychotic P.E.T.A. is - This will have a ripple effect on Wall Street no doubt!
I can see it now.... Some young imaginative entrepreneur will soon be marketing millions of flyswatters!
Surely we'll be seeing that coverage next in MSNBC's 'Business' section.
Obama should do as the Australians described in "The Bounty" and wear a fish on his head?
i think these idiots need to get a hobby.
Let me get this straight P.E.T.A. hates the fact that the Pres. swats a fly and yet it doesn't protest to the powers in Iran on their swatting of protesters.
I think they have their priorities screwed up. AS USUAL.
I am admittedly a card carrying liberal but this time these idiots have gone TOO FAR!
Ooooo Please!!! It was a fly get over it PETA.
by far the idiots at peta take the cake... most of us who happen to "like" SOME of their programs (whaling) just got a good glimpse into how radical that organization has become - from their modest roots as a "caring" organization ...
Bob, I totally agree with you, Couldn[t have said it better! I kill every fly I can, they are germ carrying vermin.
After seeing the president kill that fly , I only thought, "I hope someone has some antibacterial gel to give him"!
This is not news, for the President or PETA. Why waste our time.
I wonder if there is a PETAswatter out there?
Seriously, they walk on poop and then land and drown in my soda at BBQ's....One less ruined can of soda I say !!
Folks, you have to condsider the group this is coming from. PETA also wanted Ben & Jerry's to start using human breast milk instead of cow's milk for their ice cream.
L.J. - well said on so many levels.
This is my exact feeling with MANY "extreme" nuts (on either side of many issues). Kudos.
True... No pun intended but don't these morons (PETA) have bigger fish to fry?
I haven't heard a word from PETA regarding the psycho in Florida who tortured, mutilated, and killed over 19 cats.
It's a freaking FLY! PETA needs to get a life!
how did i know some idiot would have something to say about this trivial thing. just like that head nod BS. GET A LIFE! I cannot believe that with everything going on in the world right now MSNBC gives time of day to these idiotic "stories" F**K YOU who ever took the time to write this garbage and even interview PETA About it
Dear PETA,
My friend's cat killed a bird a couple of weeks ago. You should organize a protest rally. I already threw red paint on the cat but I don't think he got the message (he just looked confused and pissed off). He also didn't seem moved by my angry protest letter.
Help!
Sincerely,
A Concerned Citizen
JKenney, is that true? If so, I'd like to sign up to work on that milking operation...
Dan, it's true.
I wonder what kind of clever name Ben and Jerry's would come up with to market ice cream made from women's breast milk? The possibilities seem endless.....
They're a nonprofit. I know they rely heavily on donations, but I would feel sick to my stomach if these people were utilizing public funding.
PETA has good intentions, but this kind of thing just makes them look ridiculous and hurts their cause.
PETA, you guys should really choose your battles more wisely.
The loony-tune nuts are all over the place; does anybody really take this comment seriously?
Screw PETA. Obama just swatted an annoying fly; he could have just caught it and popped it into his mouth with a little Ranch dressing. LOL!!!
Agreed. This is a non-event. Let's move on.
Well, I think that dfklgn;deld;ihjgdegip, sorry grease dropped off my burger onto my keyboard.
I haven't received any responses regarding this from any Peta Rep. The Noses must be attracting Flies around President Obama.
sources say this operation Billed taxpayers 2.5 Million $
You must be kidding, right? These PETA people need to pick their battles, flys???? C'mon, who doesn't kill a fly!!!!????

Thanks for your time, and mine.
PETA = People Eating Tasty Animals
nuff said!
Regarding the above quote from Last's comment #1.41:
Do you have a source or a link to an article to verify that incident and explain it?
P.E.T.A. at one time was a respected organization to protect the humane treatment of animals.
They really do need to get a life......
PETA ---buzz off!
agreed...this is definitely NOT news
Amen 1.1! PETA is a bunch of idiots that are getting stupider by the minute...
PETA should lead by example and stay in bed all day and night feeding the bedbugs, because whenever they get up to walk, they might step on an unfortunate bug. LOL
Hey PETA, I flushed a centipede down my drain this morning. Oh boy, I'm in for it now.
PETA = Peope for the Eating of Tasty Animals.
Despite their underlying good intentions, it's things like this that make it impossible to take PETA seriously.
Not only is it a slow news week. The sheeple need to stay distracted from the real evil going on in the world.
Forget the humane fly catching device...send him a dvice to humanely return the taxpayers money he is swatting away.
Actually, I was impressed by Obama's lightning hand speed!
What a bunch of morons.
wtf
James,
But people who work for PETA use insulin, while they disagree with people using insulin.
L O L !
I thought this was a joke. Alas, it's PETA. Not an intentional joke, then.
PETA - EF-EWE !
PETA comprises the biggest DOUCHE BAGS on the planet. There's no way to be a bigger pussy then to be a part of PETA.
Man I need a rare done cheeseburger!
The End.
How about the thousands of dogs and cats that the PETA-philes "euthanize" every year? Check out the web site for The Center for Consumer Freedom and sign up for their e-mail updates.
You have got to be kidding me!
Do PETA peeps believe that plants have feelings...???
If they do, they shouldn't eat veggies, how about that!!!
If PETA is outraged over President Obama swatting a fly, they are really going to be pissed when they see what we are doing to the mosquitos!!!!
PETA was a joking right?
For once I'm obama's side. Pity it was a fly instead of peta.
P.E.T.A.
People Eating Tasty Animals.
Now, if we could just swat these PETA fools like Obama did that fly...
PETA is in a constant struggle to stay as irrelevanct to society as humanly possible. I have ultra-left friends who think PETA is crazy.
I agree, good lord what's next? Pin worms in my dog's crap needs to be protected too?
PETA SMTEA what a joke!
where can I send all the dead fly's ?
PETA has officially lost it.
If those Bimbo airhead models from PETA want to demonstrate naked send them my address. I will be happy to kill as many flies as they can stand.
PETA is ridiculous and this is coming from who loves animals, however, I swat any insect that lands on my body.
Dear PETA,
I eat meat.
If we're lucky, the flies or flying pests will carry them off.
PETA, all the members, should be tossed into a pit of camel spiders, then we film it, broadcast it all over the world, and see how crazy about animals they are then.
are you kidding me? I thought this was a joke. peta, you are a bunch of tree hugging stupid @!$%#s! Get a life. Oh @!$%# my steak is burning.
The Hell with Peta. They are complete idiots.
President!
Hey what did they expect Obama to do invite the fly to dinner?
I don't see why fishing would be banned - they seem to say "Don't kill the sea kittens."
(Yes, for some reason they think fish are actually sea kittens - they named them that in order to try to show that "you wouldn't kill your cat - so why kill fish for food?")
LMFAO........ PETA gets crazier by the day!
This about says it all about the flakes at PETA:
http://www.petakillsanimals.com/
I thought I had heard it all. They need to find other means of saving the universe starting with human beings that are hungry, sick or whatever the case may be. This was so uncalled for. I don't know what this world is coming to. But I can tell you after reading this--it is scary. These people need say nothing at all if this is the best that they can come up with. Flies are pestilence as was and is leprosy.
It is a FLY..
You should see the video they made of Shawn Johnson.
PETA kills animals.
Hence, all body cells of an organism – apart from the sperm andegg cells, the cells from which they arise (gametocytes) and undifferentiated stem cells – are somatic cells."
PETA is proof that a vegan diet is bad for the brain.
What's next - sympathy for the mosquitoes that cause malaria, and for the parasites that cause river blindness, blharzia, elephantiasis and death? Please! Has PETA got nothing better to carp on about?
It just blows the mind, doesn't it?
I wonder if they have a funeral for every bug splattered on their windshield or stuck in their radiator fins.
They just wanted to get in the news. They know crazy gets in the news so that what they do.
PETA hurts itself with this silliness.. now they object to throwing dead fish in Seattle.... Need to Get their priorities straight..
Absolutely - PETA makes themselves look like a bunch of lunatics and they wonder why they are not taken seriously. A HOUSEFLY - they make a big stink about a HOUSEFLY. When I heard about Obama swatting that fly, I just knew PETA would come out and cry about this.
Wow. Just Wow.
You said CARP!!!! a carp is a fish and fish have feelings too!
I am all for taking out disease vectors whenever you can, seeing as how we can't afford to get sick until healthcare reform happens . . . someday. Just sayin'
AKUA - LMAO!!!! LOL!!! They have lost their ever loving f----ng minds here!!!
PETA needs to stand down and leave the animal saving to the ASPCA.
Have you seen this video, it's hilarious, especially at 0:26.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-w9Pq8GixY
I find it a bit disturbing that the People for the Eating of Tasty Animals is in the news discussing house flies.
If dolphines are so high thinking how are they getting caught in nets? Seriously, that's the dumbest arguement I've ever heard.
PETA is compromised of people with serious emotional issues. They support domestic terrorism all the while KILLING animals.
I say we should waterboard all the PETA members
True, earth life forms do... But Vulcans don't! Well, most of the time anyway.
Now you just sound like Dick Cheney. :)
hey, flies are not animals !! their insects, insects that transfer parasites etc to where ever they land..their nasty and disgusting, they feed and start larvae/ maggot eggs from decrepit/ decayed sources like dog pooh poo and dead animals and other decomposing nasty stuff..then they land in your food/ dinner etc..sounds like Peta is seeking National attention, personally I feel there out of touch and should see a shrink..okay another 6 billion R&D study that says, they can be our next fuel source..jeez Gods, what's next ??? haven't we been through this before ??
not a nobama fan at all, but swatting a fly no big deal.
Are you kidding me?
Whoever at PETA wants to worry about a fly doesn't have enough to do.
I agree totally. These people need to get laid, or at least a hobby.
lol skygirl
I would be hurt if i was boinking a chick and all she was thinking about is if a fly was getting killed at that moment
Do they find the term "doggy style" offensive?
Hey, Skygirl - you volunteering ? if so, I'm joining PETA.
and..Chucky - when I'm getting laid, the only fly I want my partner to be fixated on...is mine !
PETA has to be the biggest organized group of morons in the history of mankind.
I love animals....because they taste so good!
I think when you join PETA you have to prove your level of crazy with a written test, followed by a random act of crazy.
Don't get me wrong I like animals too, and love a good cheeseburger, but those people are crazier than squirrel p**p.
LMAO! "Random of Act of Crazy" = throwing red paint on some grandma's faux chinchilla coat.
What took you so long?
I hope he uses a double barrel 12 gauge shotgun to kill the next one. And does it on national tv. Or blow up a well filled fly trap with one great big ole firecracker. PETA=IDIOTS. Oh he** here come the fly police.
To call PETA morons is an under statement.
No, it's just insulting to all the decent morons out there!!!
An insect is not an animal. Whats next? Lice? Ticks? Tapeworms?
Yeah, I guess if you have a tapeworm, you should just keep feeding it and not have it removed.
Of course, I have never seen one in the wild, so I guess it wouldn't live very long in the woods...
How ridiculous!
I respect all life, also, but if an ant stumbles in my path, I will not go out of my way to avoid it - I'd never be able to walk on my sidewalk!
I do try and relocate spiders or ladybugs to the outside, if they're in my house, but ants, flies, mosquitoes, wasps, ticks on my dogs - they don't leave my house alive.
Actually, it is. Insects are animals in the animal kingdom. Same with parasites and arachnids.
I guess you could donate a tapeworm to a new PETA host body. I really wouldn't doubt it if one of them actually volunteered for such a thing.
An insect is not an animal VAMichael-numbers? Did you make it our of middle school? What is it, a plant?
Actually Virgo, I believe they fall into the mineral category!
Any customers? >:)
PETA has lost all credibility with the American people. They are dangerous to the point of being outlawed.
Outlawed and deported, perhaps they would like Iran.
PETA is ridiculous, but not dangerous.
Robert
Not dangerous? Better not ask that question to the people's houses that they have fire bombed because of their zealousness. They are very dangerous.
Not Dangerous!?!?! Are you kidding me? What about their proven back door funding of ALF!!
A fly is not an animal. Whats next? Ticks? Lice? Tapeworms?
I think plants have feelings. we should never eat anything that is either a plant or an animal. Wait............
Who cares! PETA better never some to my home because if a fly gets in my house, it is as good as dead. I have fly swatters! LOL!
Have you seen the electric fly swatters? They are great! Fly kind of blows up and makes a spark. Plus you can kill them in mid air, don't have to make contact with a solid object.
This is the sort of junk that gives PETA a bad name. It's a fly for godsake!
Mort...Really? THAT is SO cool!
Obama has perfect aim. Just ask those Somalia pirates....
That was a tacky comment.
Delightfully tacky, yet unrefined!
GOOD ONE!!!!!!!!!
Ouch!
Give me a break1
Checkmate is right. We stand corrected.

Just give me two scoops of Marble Mammery Marvel. With two pink sprinkles on top. You can all do your own visual.
Checkmate-983933, regarding your comment #18.1:
Regarding gwen-450413's comment #18.4:
I don't know the details behind the allegations of PETA being "fined repeatedly" due to illegal disposal of euthanized animals.
Here is one quote:
Another account speaks of the animals being put down in the back of a van. And yet another shows the contract with a crematorium where PETA saves up the slain animals in a freezer and brings them in bulk to save money.
Define irony:
PETA kills so many animals because they are opposed to people owning pets.
I urge anyone that is giving these organizations to send there money to local animal shelters instead. For more information please see links. http://www.petakillsanimals.com/index.cfm http://www.consumerfreedom.com/article_detail.cfm/article/184
pgcl, thank you for putting up the link to petakillsanimals.com. Anyone who would really like proof of how hypocritical PETA is, should check out this site. Warning: it's pretty horrifying stuff.
Dear PETA. Please go over where the terrorists are strapping explosives on horses. I am sure you could do some REAL GOOD over there.
James,
The ones killed in NC were all youg healthy adoptable dogs and cats that they "rescued" from shelters and killed in their van.
James,
Unfortunately it is common practice for PETA.
ASPCA does a wonderful job.
Jegossett, thanks for the additional information in your comment #18.16.
Although I can not prove or disprove the extent of PETA's hypocrisy, it certainly appears that their public words and their common actions may differ.
A local humane society or the ASPCA certainly seem to be better equipped and more qualified to care for animals.
Talk about flying off the handle.
Witty.
A super good one, huh !
Aw heck folks. Obama was just "winging" it.
Actually I would say that MSNBC is struggling for something on a slow news day. I am not for protecting pests.
Congratulations is due to PETA - - -
They just earned thier way into being the laughing stock of the nation..
Thank you for giving me a chuckle over my morning coffee while I read the news...
i thought this was all pretty ethical. this is exactly what a fly should get, smashed! just as a cow should be ground up into cheesburgers. peta you are kooks. go eat some soybean or something and leave the rest of the world alone.
Wouldn't you know that Peta had to say something, don't they know that flies can spread disease, So Peta keep maybe you should have your facts before you spout off.
Shhhh - - next they will say they have to protect microbes that cause illnesses..
Give me a freakin' break! PETA is only doing this so that they can get noticed. Give it a rest.
Have they ever "accidentally" steppped on a bug on the sidewalk, etc? So, are they now guilty of animal cruelty?
all i have to say to this is...WTF?! honestly don't they have anything better to do? a fly? u really gotta be kidding me....
These people need a life - seriously.
I agree! Has nobody noticed the article refers to a fly as an animal, when it is, in fact, an insect?
