The US is best when it is at war, it should bomb North Korea into the stone age.

We need a less naive President who doesn't believe that all people are good and that Kim Jong Il is just misunderstood. The guy is nothing but a power hungry liar taking advantage of the world's fear. We should bomb his nuclear and missile sites. After Desert Storm he, and the Chinese and Russians, know that he would never stand a chance against us on the ground anyway. And we're not spread too thin for that. There's 30,000 Marines in Japan who are there solely as a quick response to any N Korean aggression. That's also not counting any Japanese or S Korean forces. I'm sure they're tired of Kim Jong Il on their doorstep.

All nations of the world should cease and desist providing assistance of any kind to North Korea, isolate the country and blockade the ports. A rogue nation such as North Korea can not be negotiated with today or in the future for past history itself proves that North Koreas leadership can not be trusted.

We have troops spread throughout the Middle East, and I believe that any invasion of NK would be much tougher than anybody we've fought since the invasion of Europe in WWII. Korea, no way, not as militarized. Vietnam, nope, still just guerillas, abiet powerful ones. The 2 Gulf Wars, not a chance, the actual military folded in 3 weeks, with the guerillas still holding out.

I think a quick strike against their nuclear reactor would be a good decision, not a nuclear strike, because that would open up a can of worms. Unless we can get the "Nuclear Club" (US,UK, Fr. China, Russia, Pakistan, India) to agree to launch a nuclear strike against them; India and Pakistan would be the most important, because they are almost in a state of war and armed, and any nuclear attacks made by us could be a signal for them to start a nuclear war, and with India's population, that death toll could reach pretty high up into the millions.

As far as conventional military goes, we don't have the troop. NK is heavily entrenched, they absolutely aren't "terrorists", they're a real military that trains all of the time. Our military wouldn't be prepared at all, our troops now are used to urban combat against small, untrained units. NK certainly won't be like that. We'd have a few months of heavy losses until the survivors get their butts in gear, but then we'd be stretched too thin in Iraq.

Any invasion would have to be a coalition, led by China or Russia preferably, with our Navy providing the most support out of our military.

Bottom line, get China and Russia on board, and conventionally bomb their nuclear capabilities.

Tad, your right. There is no way a nuclear blast in n.k. would help anything. I like what you said about India and Pakistan but also any other nuclear armed nation (Iran) would get the idea that we are in the age of nuclear war. Unfortunately Bush almost destroyed our capability to reason with leaders such as this. He made a lot of enemies which is making it almost impossible to negotiate with these insanely violent leaders. Obama is very good at reasoning and showing respect. But I am afraid that North Korea is way past reason at this point. Think folks before you leap ! The U.S. could easily zap NK's nuclear facilities, launch sites and any other military targets with high powered laser guided bombs. But think of the consequences ! It would give NK the excuse to attack SK with conventional weapons and over run the DMZ with a million or more soldiers. Both capitols are within 10 minutes striking distance. Also, how would China and Russia react ? Who's side would they take ? That would also draw in the U.S.and it's allies. Yes, back to the future folks ! This president doesn't understand that nations do NOT have friends. Nations have alliances of mutual benefit. When the benefits to one of the nations disappears the alliance disintegrates. At one point France saw no benefit to being in NATO. Boom! They pulled out. Italy was friends with one group during WW-I. Change in plans and they sided with the Germans and Japanese in the next go round. The Russians and the Chinese have alternately made kissy kissy then hate each other. In no case does this make either one of them OUR friend. Nuclearize the NKs now and advise the Russians and Chinese only after the missile launches.

Wrong! The US helped rebuild Europe through Marshall Plan after WW2 and both have been inseparable allies eversince. Have anyone ever heard or seen Europe and US threaten one another militarily? Both are strongly dependant on one anothers survival! ... And this strong bond between Europe and the US has made others like Russia and China dependant on the West (Europe and US), despite all the political differences. Therefore North Korea's stupid game is a lonely man's game. A desperate gesture for attention. So what do you do to a recalcitrant child who is threatning you with a sharp knife? ...You lock him up, isolate him, while you whip him real good until he learns a lesson of his life, then take the knife off his hands!

It's important that we do something. If we cave to or ignore North Korea, Iran (potentially a much bigger problem since Iran is much more hostile toward America) will see that we have no backbone. We need to do something, not only to take care of the Korea problem, but also to ensure Iran that pursuit of nuclear arms will not be tolerated.

I would be more worried about our allies. South Korea is well within range and if N.K. nukes them then Obama will have no choice but to take military action. Who knows what that will bring...

Something that all of you seem to forget is that we have troops stationed along the 32nd parallel, the border between the north and the south. It the north got a hair up its arse, they could nuke that and then march right into the south. It would kill many of our troops stationed there not to mention the toll it would take on the south.

N.K is a very dangerous situation that many on here seem will be solved with nukes. Grow up children, nukes do not solve any problems, they create them. That is what this whole mess is about... isn't it? Then if China and Russia get involved... what then? We may have an advantage in the technology factor, but if we go against millions of troops between N.K, China, and Russia, not even our allies will be able to help us stop the bleeding. No need to worry about a ground action/land war, all it takes is one airstrike against the nuclear reactors. Israel took out an Iraqi reactor in the 80s by an airstrike. It starves its own people while the leadership enjoys everything the west has to offer in the way of consumer goods. Bagelmaven, you don't know what the hell you're talking about. No nuclear blast in North Korea would have ANY radiation effect on South Korea, China, or Japan. It wouldn't even have an effect on the rest of North Korea. In 64 years of nuclear weapons explosions, the radiation has never gone beyond the localized area of the explosion.

The only time such radiation has spread from one country to the other was in the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident in Ukraine. That was a nuclear MELTDOWN, which is far different than an explosion. Before you tell people to think for once in their lives, please try to have some basic level of understanding of the subject on which you're making a pompous ass out of yourself.

We do have the neutron bomb which is a lot less destructive of real estate, but it sure wreaks hell on the population and we can toss in the EMF to disable most of their electrical stuff. Kim's iPod will be toast!!

Wars in both Korea and Iran would require a large-scale draft of military age youth. I don't think this would be popular with very many voters and parents at this time, since I don't believe the North Koreans and/or the Iranians are any match for our nuclear arsenal.

That would be considered an act of war if we were to just arbitarily go in there and blow up their nuclear facilities. Starting up a possible WWIII is not the proper approach here. As long as there are tougher sanctions and other alternatives to pursue that will make them understand they need to dismantle these facilities, then that's what we will do. Granted Obama hasn't shown himself to be aggressive militarily yet, but understand he does have military advisors and he will rely on what they tell him. I say if sanctions fail then we use a blockade so nothing goes in or out of NK, just like we did to Cuba during the Kennedy years. They finally backed off and dismantled everything and perhaps NK will too. There are always alternative actions than just going in and blowing everything away.

Realistically, war is tricky. MacArthur had the North Koreans beaten in 1951... until the Chinese crossed the border and nearly shoved us all the way back to the beach. If MacArthur had his way, the big one, WWIII would have happened right then and there between Free and Communist. The Korean War was no easy fight, and the territory has every bit as harsh a climate as Afghanistan. Choose your war carefully, this one would be very messy. Quick, aerial strikes on specific targets, weapons plants, etc. may be the least dangerous way for us to go. The big risk then, is that North attacks the South, and we would have our troops in the line of fire. They would have their hands full, and this bully dictator of theirs would likely try to use some kind of nuclear weapon on the South and our troops. Very risky, not Bush's fault, this diplomacy method in NK has been in place since Eisenhower stopped the fighting. This threat was always there.

The future I think is microscopic. Never hear much about that, it's too scary.

Just An Idea: Form a resolution with all the other heavies in the world. Give them plenty of time to back down and save face at the same time. 30 days might work. Ultimatum, enforced by all would be: with plenty of warning that all nuclear facilities will be destroyed at a given time. No nukes needed. If all nuclear nations enforce this, they will back down. If not then we have everybody that is anybody behind us.

If it is the Russians you refer to as not having the "gonads," I'd suggest you look at history. I believe there were at least three instances in the past 20 - 30 years that the Russians almost launched against us because they "thought" briefly that we were launching a first strike. Given the size and scope of the Russian nuclear arsenal, the U.S. will always tippy-toe around the Russians. You'll notice that your hero "W" didn't charge into Georgia when the Russians attacked. Looks like he didn't have the gonads either.

They have maybe a hand full of atomic weapons, and perhaps the capability to make a few nuclear weapons. They have a very unreliable medium range missile, capable of hitting Japan, and maybe Hawaii, if the winds blowing in the right direction, but not anywhere near the west coast of mainland U.S.

We, on the other hand, have many thousands of long range, ICBMs, that's Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles, each of which carries multiple high power nuclear warheads. These missiles are stationed in silos scattered all over the midwest, as well as on submarines cruising around under the oceans right now, this very second.

If Kim Jong Il was insane enough (and who knows, he might be!!) to think he could accomplish something by attacking us, we would then (and only then) have the right to wipe his crazy little butt off the face of the planet. The very worst he could do is blow up our favorite vacation spot. Yeah, OK, in a worst case situation a million Hawaiians and a bunch of foreign tourists get toasted, but then, OH BABY! The wrath of Khan would rain down upon that pipsqueak.

If we needed to use it, we do in fact have the ability to turn most of the North Korean peninsula into a parking lot. But what we don't have is the right to do that pre-emptively. North Korea, like Iran, is a sovreign nation which has the right to conduct scientific experiments, just like we did, and to develop technology, including nucler technology.

Now then, IF they go and use that technology to attack our friends in their neighborhood, THEN we go and wipe 'em out. But not before. If we attack first, like we did in Iraq, then we're the bully and nobody likes a bully.

And to all you gung-ho rah-rahs on this thread chanting that we should shoot first and ask questions later, this ain't the OK Corral. Grow up. Let the processes of diplomacy play out. Let the local powers deal with the issue. IF and WHEN it becomes necessary for us to act militarily, we'll be ready. And Obama will be ready, if he needs to be. But he's not so stupid (unlike our former president) as to go and unilaterally get us stuck in a situation that would be more trouble to get out of, and much more risk to our troops, than it would be to watch over, very vigilently.
