I say let her come to the trial - that will only make the pain of the conviction worse for the both of them. Motherhood is sacred in this country, but to raise a child with blatant disregard for the most basic of moral principles should hold some penalty and lose of child seems justified. A seventeen year old that acts in such a manner should be considered adult enough to face the full force of the law.
Sixteen years of age and willing to take somebody's life. What has his age got to do with it? We've tried sixteen year-olds as adults in this country before so don't try to play that 'Child' card! As for poor mom - where was all her care and concern while her son was sailing out on the high-seas pirating away from home? She wasn't able to sell milk in his absence then either if you buy into that sob story. Just hold off on all the drama and give this young man what he is entitled to - Namely, a speedy trial. Don't further burden the American taxpayers with travel and housing Mommie Dearest. The trial should be rather speedy considering this young pirate was caught redhanded while in the act of carrying out his illegal deeds. Of course the media would love for all this to blossom into a money making media event. There's a good possibility that this is what President Obama will decide to do though. Afterall image has become so much more important than substance in these troubled times.
He was old enough to pick up a gun and go charging aboard a U.S. flagged vessel and take hostages! He knew what he was doing at the time and should have known the consequences of his actions. Now Mommy wants her good little boy released. The bleeding heart liberals standing in line to defend him are going to love this. This is already shaping up to be a taxpayer expense media circus, and now she wants us to pay for her to come over here to be with the kid. Bring her here, and the circus just gets even wilder.I say let's buy her a flat screen TV and she can watch it on NBC or CNN from Middle Of Nowhere, Somalia! This guy should never have been brought here to begin with. He should have been given a life preserver, dropped off about 100 miles off the Somali coast and told to swim for it. If he made it, he was off the hook!
Devils son: What do you think we can get for him in ransom? Maybe a couple of fish heads and half a bag of rice?
I say lets save a couple million in court expences and just wrap him in 5 feet of chain link fence then let him go swimming in the ocean. Trust me on that one, it works real real good.5 feet of chain link fence and a couple pieces of bailing wire cost about $10. He would be swimming for a long long long time at the bottom of the ocean.
Who knows. If they are going to use laws that are a hundred years old, we might all get to see him hung from a yard arm on the U.S.S. Constitution. That would be something to see.
Reality time now. The worst part about this is the fact that reguardless of his age, he will probably eventually be found guilty of who knows what. But there it is. He will spend years and years and years in prison where his living conditions are about 50 times better than anything he could expect living in a mud and stick house in Somalia.
He will have a house that never leaks when it rains. He will have a place to lay down and sleep with a mattress. It will be warm in winter. It will be cool in summer. He will eat at least three times a day. He will be able to flush his pi$$ and $hit down a hole instead of just storing it in a corner of his mud and stick house. It will be like heaven to him. He will probably write letters to everyone he knows (assuming he knows how to write) telling them to commit piracy and allow themselves to get caught. Then they will also be able to be brought to the U.S. and experience the wonderful heavenly conditions of a U.S. prison.
Maybe if europe stopped dumping toxic waste off the shore of Somalia and stopped poaching their fisheries with giant commercial boats they wouldnt resort to piracy. Those people are starving. Their children of families living near the coast are being born with defects. This is the dirty little secret you wont read on msn
Woo Hoooo....lets just kill all the poor people then we wont have anyone left who needs to steal to eat, piracy problem solved. What a bunch of Fuggin George Bush wannabee's
The Answer to all our Problems......Killlllll em Alllllllllll
Gary Cooper, you are so right. BUt the trial should be speedy and not involve any more tax money than what is needed to complete the process. Let the Mother stay home, her presence is not going to change the facts.
So here we go, spend millions on a trial and some weak jail sentence then a "fast track" to citizenship and on the dole for life, bring over dozens of "relatives" all on the taxpayers backs so the whole clan can vote socialist err ahh I mean dimwitocrat. See Odummy DOES have a plan.
telmom32 has it exactly right...she just wants the visa to get here and sponge off the governement. As to the son....some idiot in the article referred to him as a "confused teenager" bull$hit...he certainly wasn't confused with the operation and function of a weapon!
This entire thing will end up costing US a bundle. What a crock.
Why should his mother come to the U.S.? Where was she when her 'little boy' became a pirate? In addition to this, why is this kid being tried in our Country, costing a ton of money to try him and house him in one of our prisons for the rest of his life? The traditional court for piracy off Somalia's shore is in Kenya.
Our targets should be these small groups of pirates and then killing or capturing them quickly, seriously, and cheaply. How hard is it to sink a small boat? Maybe our high tech navy is too sophisticated for this.
We have laws on the book to hang him. We also have a democratic lawyer that thinks US navy and ships crew are at fault or he is another loser trying to make a name for himself. When a country had a strong King or President they use to keel drag them!
What do we call individuals that hijack airliners and hold the passengers/crew for ransom or the release of their buddies? I think we call them terrorists. I would like to know why they are not being dealt with the same way.
As for this clown's age, we charge and jail "children" charged as adults that are younger than 16. boo hoo!!! ~G
No, datadon, we have a defense lawyer who thinks that he's doing his job by trying to find a way to prove this guy innocent. Trying to make a name for himself? Perhaps. Politics hardly come in to play. By the way, I was doing some research yesterday. When Sean Hannity was working in California on the radio and was fired for being controversial, the ACLU managed to get his job back, although he turned it down. The ACLU is there for everyone, and not all lawyers are Democrats because they want to defend a controversial figure.
I really can't see a reason to disallow his mother from seeing him. If it comes down to the US footing the travel expenses, then no, but she should be allowed to see him, as almost any prisoner is allowed.
It may end up being more prudent to look for life in prison, rather than execution, if he is in fact under 18, but we really can't afford to release him. They attacked a US ship, and was captured by the US, so unlike the other recent catch-and-release cases, we should have full legal authority to hold him. But legal ramifications MUST happen in this case. Otherwise, we may as well legalize piracy.
I see a post below calling for drones to survey the areas for pirates. That's not a bad idea.
SCUMB_G RON KUBY HAS THE NERVE TO QUESTION THE US ACTIONS OF TAKING THE PIRATE WHILE HE "NEGOTIATING". He should be the one held hostage and see how conserned he is with the "rights" of the pirates. These are the same people whose countrymen dragged U.S. service personell through the streets of Mogadishu. Where was his concern about their violation of principles of warfare. These people are terrorists not entitled to be treated to the rules of warfare!!!!!
This is amazing..this kid was captured after killing off a few of his pirate buddies..and the laywers and this kids mom want to set him free because of his age...it would have been cheaper and easier to toss him back overboard...how much damage or how many ships..or how many free citizens working the seaways making honest money have to be put through the terror these pirates are putting the ones they have captured and held for ranson...its time to close up shop for the pirates for good and forget about what any of thems age is.
I can see it now...and for the next several months. Questions arise..Is he old enough to be tried, is he mentally able to know whats going on, oh he had such a poor up-bringing, can we be fair, shouldn't we educate him first, no let's give him back as a gesture of kindness, surely the US did something to his country for him to hate us......this nation will spend MILLIONS of dollars on this one individual before we even get him to a trial. We'll heard Obama, then Hillary and a host of other POLITICIANS vieing for the mic and the news headlines fo a long time.....the liberials will have a glorious field day with this...maybe they can blame Bush for something.
Seems the right wing douche squad is out in full force this morning, and they had their coffee! Give them a subject, and they'll talk about killing it. Way to sink to their level guys....
Richard, that is and will be the problem for years to come. We sit like Sue says above and worry about the perps and not the victims. Already the 'confused teenager' defense is being put forth in the newspapers and media.
It will be a media blitz trial and then someone like Sue should be the one to take care of this poor undeserving little boy so that he can grow up correctly! After all, he didn't really mean to take up a gun, board a ship, terrorize unarmed sailors and a captain. No, he is just a misguided little boy never given an opportunity.
I doubt that Thomas Jefferson worried about any of the pirates misguided upbringings 200 years earlier and he helped to frame the Constitution by which we live. I think he knew exactly what he meant when it was written.
We do not know true hunger, the kind of hunger that will drive a person to desperate acts.
That's very true, however you're ignoring the fact this ship was in fact carrying food and aid shipments destined for that part of the world. If all they ever wanted was food and supplies then they wouldn't be holding people ransom. How much food have these "pirates" purchased with the millions they've received in ransom funds? How many people have they fed? Personally I'd be guessing none.
And leave it to a civil rights guy (Kuby?) to try to get this thief off. Why do they blindly start protecting these criminals? For once I'd like to hear one of these guys say, "sorry, but this guys guilty as hell". Does that EVER happen?
*sigh* Hate to say it, but maybe he should have "accidentally" fallen over the railing around the fantail of the Bainbridge, and saved everyone the expense.
Regardless of the fact that he doesn't speak english or that he is "only a teenager", this man knew what he was doing and that it was wrong. He should have to pay the price. No sympathy.
You know, of course, this pirate is only a symptom of the problem. I don't think the rest of his co-horts give two hoots about what happens to him and no matter what we do to him, it will not change anything in Somalia or on the open seas.
If we do take him to trial and he is executed, it won't change anything.
Well, maybe our President will go there and apologize to them for us (the United States) being so hateful and despicable and sing Kumbaya with them.
Let the pirate go free here in the US. Have a dozen or so kids. Fit right in. After 2-3 generations in the welfare system, the offspring will fit right in.
The pirates weren't worried about the civil rights of the people on the ship or the captain who they held for days threatening to kill. If he is 16 he is old enough to stand trail. Citizens of the US stand trail for murder at 16. I hope he gets a speedy trial and straight off to a high security prison. His mother should not be allowed to come to the US for the trail. She just wants a free ticket to America.
motorcityrick, I'm sorry you're an uneducated boob who lost his job and has all the free time in the world to try your hand at comedy. I'd suggest not quitting your day job, but you already lost that. Don't feel bad though, your mom still thinks you're cool....you can go upstairs from your basement "apartment" and ask her yourself. good luck with the comedy career....
Jusy another photo op available for obama. Bet 'ja you a buck this black pirate will come out a super hollywood star! Will author (I didn't say write) a book and become one of obama's community ACRON leaders.
I looked at the photo of the Somalian teenage pirate with a big smile, and I thought what a sad sick kid. He probably thinks he's some kind of hero or celebrity, or could he be very scared and nervous. Sometimes, when people are scared they also smile too. I have a feeling he's thinks he's some celebrity now.
He's skinny as all heck, and probably hasn't had a decent meal, but regardless of his appearance and mental state he must understand he and his cohorts are liable for kinapping, and stealing. He has to stand trial, regardless of his mother's plea.
The question has been raise "What type of mother would she allow her child to become a pirate?" Well, if you live in a lawless country, and the government is so corrupt they refuse to feed and protect their own people, than you might have a mother who could be a victum of the system. She could be the type of woman were she and her children steal for a living. I don't know. I feel badly she is pleading with the President to let her son go. She's naive to think we just hand over 16 year old crimminals. That's not how it works. But that doesn't mean we give her a ticket and hotel accomadations. I don't think she understand that even in our own U.S. courts, when a teenager commits a crime they must go to trial and when found guilty they must go to jail. We just don't let them go because they are 16 years of age.
If the mom wants to come to this country and be with her son, then she must seek a travel visa and hopefully her own country can pay her way.
"very well-disciplined young kid." He had been going to an Islamic school at the time he left with the pirates, Muse said.
code for terrorist training.....................hmmmmm..............
You just know some bleeding heart liberal is going to want us to pay the way for the parents to come here and pay all their expenses. Then they will be crying about him being a "just" a kid. blah, blah, blah blah.
We do not know true hunger, the kind of hunger that will drive a person to desperate acts.
No, but we do know crime, in which people knowingly break laws for personal gain. Use your head. The idiot and his now-deceased comrades had the money to buy guns and ammunition. There have been millions of dollars paid in ransom to release innocent hostages from wrongful detention. Tell me just what kind of hunger this punk has. He wants more money? More gold jewelry? Celebrity status? If he was that hungry, all he had to do was wait for the food supplies aboard that ship to be delivered.
Besides, for someone so hungry, he sure seemed happy in that picture.
Some of you rabid reactionaries need to watch the John Adams series and be reminded we are a nation of laws, not of mobs.
I hope this kid never sees the light of day again but I also believe the fact that someone is willing to step up to give him a fair defense is precisely what makes this the greatest country on Earth. Otherwise we are no better than Somalia itself.
I knew that sooner rather than later some of these pesky skeeter like libs would start whining about this murdering thief being just a kid and all that mealy mouth bullhocky. It's giving me lotsa laughs, reallyu. These pirates, innocent little critters that they are have amassed God knows how much money from ransoms. So why is this kid skinny and hungry? They got all that money, you mean to tell me that they aren't buying food and needed stuff with it? You KNOW that they are living it up on that money, buying guns, fast cars and junk with it. Get your crying towels out, and stop pissing and moaning about them being hungry. I hope they hang his donkey first go around.
Americans are a sick society and the most violent for sure ?? WHAT IS THE @!$%#ING WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE that you want to kill and kill and kill every body who do not look like you, do not live like you do not eat like you, do not talk like you !!
You are a bunch of @!$%#ing paranoid sociopaths !
Obviously, many of you are not happy people and your american dream has become the american nightmare.
What I am saying is that putting a teenager in jail will not solve the problem of piratery, it is going to make it worst ! They have not killed anyone that I know of !
If this kid goes to jail, they may start killing people and what about if they fire a missile at an oil tanker ???
Do you realize the consequances ?? If they fire a missile at an oil tanker, millions of gallons of oil will go into the ocean and it will kill all life over a huge area ?? Do you think it is worse the risk ?? I DON'T, SORRY !
Then we will have antother war... do you think we can afford it ? Lets not talk about the environemental disaster this could create.
Len...BINGO!! Why was he brought back to the US? The trial will probably be nothing but a media circus! If his mommy wants to see the trial, let her pay her own way over. Then escort her to the airport afterwards. Better yet, deny her a visa. We owe those people nothing!
Sorry if the kid bought into the pirate claims of a better life style. The second he picked up an AK-47 and boarded a U.S. flagged vessel he commited a grave crime against the U.S. Just as a U.S. kid who robs a bank is held accountable so should this young man be (held accountable ).He's lucky to be alive.By the way.... If this family is truly penniless how did his mom afford a call to the U.S.????Even if the AP payed for the call, where do these desperately poor people have a phone?
doremifasilosoda I would have happily remained a veteran right up to the point where some "freedom fighter" killed my buddy's son (in Iraq). He was a corpsman (Navy Medic) trying to help and they killed him. To me that was when it became something I no longer wanted to talk about and time to do something. If al-Queda hadn't sent "student pilots" to fly planes into buildings and kill 3000 citizens for getting up to go work we might all be going about our business. Just as if this "student's" subjects hadn't probably including the usual "Death to Israel" and "Death to America" maybe he'd still be a student going about his business and not in custody.
no, we can't. we are a nation of laws. the ideal of impartial justice is what binds us; it is what makes us great. no matter how heinous the actions of the apprehended are, we must always return to the judicial principles that guided great men to form a great nation of laws. the founding fathers built the nation on the foundations of the british legal system, which was and is a fair system.
when justice fails, we must fix it. when it is unfair or biased, we must also fix it. what we must never do is lose faith in the unwavering principle of justice. justice is the backbone that gives us strength, and it is what binds our collective belief in the principles of our republic.
Folks I was just joking about ransoming him! We should have just shot him. Much cheaper than court and a long prison sentence. Throwing him overboard about 30 miles from shore would have been cheaper.
If we keep him,,, we should drag him into the streets and shoot him- OUR law for dealing with PIRATES!!!!!! Anything short of this is not worth it. Send him back on a life raft!!!!
.
With Scumbama racking up mountains of debt for my children, we can't afford more prisoners!!!
look at that smile....he must be happy to waste our tax dollar, happy to spend some time on our country club jail and may finally get his mother to land on united state to attend his court hearing (then she could be a room mate of OBAMA'S aunt.....
for those who said hunger is what drive him to piracy...well ak-47 and bullet must be cheaper than food out there..
or maybe he is happy that OBAMA assured our enemies that no more water-boarding and they will be treated like our best friends
Im going to sound like a bleeding heart liberal here but what the hell. Life in prison is too long for this piratet. Yes he commited a heinous act but he didnt kill anyone even after he was wounded he didnt kill the captain when he had the chance. He showed a small amount of decency by surrendering and not hurting any of his hostages. I would say a 10 year sentence would be adequate hell its more than American kids get for shooting up a 7 11. Even when they kill another kid they rarely get more than 10 years.
This child should have been sent to France or one of the EU countries for trial. He certainly will not get a fair trial here if the comments on this message board is to be believed.
No wonder there are several million people in US jails who have no a hope in hades of being released.
Treat others the way you want to be treated. The world is watching what we do. Hope we do not show how ignorant, lacking in morals judgement , violent and lacking in fairness.
It is obvious most folks do not even understand their own culture much less the culture of others. I am sorry for this child because he is a child whether his age indicates it or not. In his country he may be 15 or 16 but based on the culture etc of this country he would be about 7 or 8 years old.
No matter if he was the one in charge or not he is the one that was caught and thus will be expected to bear the punishment of all of the pirates. The Captain was not harmed, two other pirates were killed, the ship was released, try the boy as a juvenile and sentence his as a juvenile.
Nothing will be gained by having him locked up for the rest of his life. He is a product of his environment/circumstances just like we are the product of our environment/ circumstances whether we want to believe it or not. It is obvious that he is not one of the king pins of the pirating operations and a newbe to the whole pirating thing.
Wonder if he was read his rights etc and represented by council. Perhaps he should seek help from his embassy if they even have one in this country. He will get a longer and more severe sentence than Madoff no doubt.
Americans are a sick society and the most violent for sure ?? WHAT IS THE @!$%#ING WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE that you want to kill and kill and kill every body who do not look like you, do not live like you do not eat like you, do not talk like you !!
Really? Well dammit the next time one of your foreign neighbors has an earthquake, please don't call on the USA to send supplies and help with securing the devastated area. The next time there is some type of man made disaster that hits your country, yes remember we are just here on this planet to kill all that we encounter and don't call us to help you. The next time there is a disease outbreak that meds and vaccines are needed for, yep thats right look somewhere else beside the USA!
If we had all the money back we have funnelled into other countries we would have no debt!
I would like to see them use drones to surveil the " hot " areas. Then when they see suspected pirates, send a couple gunships like the Apache. Then just smoke the worthless a$$holes and let any that live through it swim home to their worried concerned mommas.
Yes he'd be foolish....but I've got $100 that says he's putting his response together right now. He'll reply....and odds are she'll be brought over here at our expense. It's the most rediculious scenario which means it's the most LIKELY scenario.
maybe she can just get into a "net cafe" as they call them there and go to the yahoo chatrooms and dating sites and make the claims of "love" like all the rest of them do to get some fools to send them money and sponsorship.
Here we go!!! The poor mother.....maybe. This couldn't be a pirate trick again could it? These are the same people that promised to release the Captain of a ship in return for this same guy but instead refused to release the Captain once they had him back. Just a couple of days ago this guy was holding an AK-47 to the back of the head of an American and would have used it if they knew they could have gotten away. Don't fall for these lies again Obama. Make an example of him for the other pirates. aaaaarrrrgggghhhhh
You're so right there! This would be an excellent opportunity for President Obama to lead by setting the example. We shall all see rather soon what our 'Leader' is made of. Cross your fingers for some of that 'Change' we keep hearing about.
the only "change" I have seen is a lot of blacks in congress and higher military jobs now.
The only change I see is overt racism has become a regular issue on boards like this emanating from people like you. Maybe they should allow avatars on newsvine, yours could be a nice pointy white hat.
I can't believe there would be anyone in this country that would take the job of this little attorney. Representation??? He's not even a citizen. As much as I don't wanna pay for this TERRORIST'S trial, go on...try him, convict him (what judge/jury in their right mind would let him off?? Fingers crossed!) and throw him in one of our prisons and let our inmates loose on him....It'll be the shortest incarceration in the history of the world.
As I posted above, every bleeding heart liberal organization from the ACLU on down are probably fighting for the chance to defend this poor misguided little scumbag. And you know what? One of them will do it at American taxpayer expense. Mommy wants to come here, tell her she foots the bill.
The Shysters will be coming out from under rocks offering FREE legal counsel.
Just like Aunty who will probably move into the White House as soon as she becomes LEGAL.
Maybe we should do exactly what his loving mom wants....gently return him....return, via helicopter to the exact coordinates where he was picked up....and softly lower him into the ocean at that spot, so he can be free to enjoy the waves for as long as he can float.
This problem is only going to get worse. He will be the first of MANY. Get used to it. I say arm the ships going through this area with military trained individuals.
If planes have federal marshals flying along for safety, then why not these ships?
Oh, and blast the pirates out of the water when they get within 100 yards of any boat. That, they will understand.
Are you kidding? Did you see the smile on his face? The worst American prison will be like a palace to this kid. 3 squares a day, TV, AC, a mattress without bugs! He's hit the jackpot!!!
As one reads the news 'Updates', this ordeal becomes increasingly agravating. Associated Press says:
"The smiling teenager seemed poise as he entered the federal building in a rainstorm late Monday."
His family has contacted the Minneapolis based 'Somali Justice Advocacy Center' which is certainly odd considering his family wasn't able to steer this young man in the right direction previously. Now it's reported that Omar Jamal of the SJAC is quoted as saying, "What we have here is a confused teenager, overnight thrown into the highest level of the criminal justice system in the United States" ... Excuse me Mr. Jamal but this guy wasn't "thrown" into this situation. He placed himself there when he chose to take up arms and threaten lives aboard a U.S. flagged ship on the high seas. Please... The Pity-Pool has been drained in this case. He was caught redhanded in the act!
Now, a New York based civil rights lawyer questions the validity of the case based on the assumption that this young Somali pirate came onto the Bainbridge under a flag of truce to negotiate. Well, he wasn't exactly there to negotiate the price of mom's milk, was he? No indeed, he certainly was not.
Bruce, you may be right. The way this thing is getting spun, it may not be too surprising to see this criminal granted U.S. citizen ship. The next stop after that will be an appearance on Oprah panning for a book deal and movie rights.
This is going to get played out like a circus that's so damn sickening it is pathetic.
This will be a left wing lawyers dream. This trial will cost millions of tax dollars and nothing will be done. They should give him to California and all the left wing idiots there then kick California out of the union. (that would save our country billions)
Bruce: you hit the nail on the head except he will NOT become an American citizen. He will collect money from the government for the rest of his life in one of two ways.
1) If he is found innocent or the charges dropped due to age, this little @!$%# will sue the government for millions claiming false imprisonment.
2) He will live off the government tit for the rest of his life.
Does anybody else want to just slap the white toothy grin off his face???

I agree! And if the Minneapolis 'Somali Justice Advocacy Center' really takes this plea seriously I'm sorry but I'm going to have to leave this state!!!! A confused teenager? Really?? He didn't seem very confused when he had a gun to the back of the head of a high ranking military official. I hope Obama doesn't let poor old mom over here. I think these two cooked it up just to attempt to get citizenship. We have enough foreigns in this country that we can't even take care of our own. Thanks though!!!
For god sake, this is a 16 year old african... someone who certainely did not have the chance to receive an education ! These people are so poor, it is very easy to lure them to a life of crimes. But most of these young pirates are not killer, they just do what they do for the money, so they can feed their familes.
But I am not surprise at all the comments, americans have compassion for their own, who could they have any for poor africans ?
The more I read about these posts, the more I despise americans for their lack of common sense, compassion, ignorance, and arrogance.
Once again where is the farther? Maybe he was with the eldest son on a different boat attacking some other ship. Who cares where he was the fact that this kid got on that boat knowing what they were doing says it all, he knew what he was doing. The I didnt pull the trigger I only gave him the gun defense doesnt work, make the the punk stand trial and make an example out of him. Try the kid as an adult since he wanted to play pirate with real ones.
In as much as I would like to throw the little idiot to the sharks myself, maybe your on to something, then again the rest of the rats could probally care less.
And how many of our tax dollars are going to be wasted on this BS? Are we going to pay to have his mother flown over here? He made an adult decision to do do what he did, he probably thought he was cool...see where that crap will get you, you little sh*t.
F him, F his mom and F all of those dirtbags...letting him off the hook is not going to work in favor of what is right and will certainly not do anything for derterance of this crap.
Harsh, swift punishment is the only derterant that EVER works... kinder, gentler is BS!!!!
How much do you think we spent already? A whole ship full of navy guys two Special operations air drops, 3 .50 calibur rounds, press conferences. The one thing that is telling in this mess is the 3 pirates the Seals were responsible for are no longer a problem. The one pirate the state department is responsible for is going to cost millions.
Maybe we should apply the old middle east laws......cut off his hands so he can't use one of those weapons of mass destruction again. Doesn't matter at what age he was "seized" or "lured" into the life by other gang members. He IS 17 and DID use an AK-47 against an American citizen. He should be tried and convicted of the crime then sent Kenya to serve out his time. I don't think their jails would give him all the pleasures our jails offer. And we wouldn't have to be paying for supporting the kid for the next 50-70 years. Of course he might not survive that long in our prisons either, unless he found a protector to be a slave to.
The ONLY reason that last batch was released was due to individual nations' laws re: holding someone who has NOT committed a crime against that nation. It was a Canadian naval ship that captured that group, but it was NOT a Canadian ship they attacked, nor were there any Canadians aboard it. Until the UN puts more teeth into the laws that the Naval force can use to detain and prosecute these pirates, there isn't anything that can be done other than to strip them (temporarily) of their weapons and send them back home.........or MAYBE we could put them back on their boat with NO communication devices, pull them WAY out to sea, and let them drift until the other pirates find them afloat (dead or alive.)
No way! She can come here and be with him during trial and then go back once he is convicted. DO NOT LET HIM GO! I do not care how old he is or how the pirates got him to join.
Once the mama gets into the country she is NEVER leavin!
Unless she is put on the transport by Armed Guards,I volunteer ,did it in the Nam experienced.
But I'll have to tie her hands behind her back and put a rope around her neck.
Thats what they taught me in the crotch.
Don't think we should use the same tactics eastern world would use. However, he should be tried. If sixteen, then those rules for youngsters should apply. U.N. should get some teeth or grow some manly parts that it currently lacks. Piracy is wrong!!! Next thing to do. Help Somalia get a method of income. Every nation has positive things going for it, a reason to visit, a reason to support it. Since I am not familiar with that country or its government, I'm not certain what we, as Americans, can do but we must do something so the young people and the adults that sponsor piracy have alternatives. Responses that we can not help everybody must not apply when the alternative is paying ransom for someone else's property and life. Under no circumstance should we pay ransom. It's wrong on its face
you have got to be kidding...how about, for all you do gooders that feel sorry for dirtbags like this, maybe you can move to their country and support them. You seem like you have as much brains as they do. stupid a&&.
Great just what we need in our prisons an experienced pirate that can explain to the convicts how easy piracy was against foriegn ships. We will have prisoners plotting ways to get a boat as soon as they get out and will be jacking Canadian ships before their Parole officers even report them missing.
This young man attacked an American ship. He is subject to American law. I'm willing to bet this was not his first violent act.
As for the plea........NO!!!!
His poor mother didn't seem to be able to control his behavior directly, but she can certainly point this incident out to her remaining children, and any other children she may be able to influence....."This is what happens to a thief when he is captured......If you commit a crime, you will be punished....harshly"
There are plenty of good families in this country who have suffered because of the crimes a family member has committed. The criminal certainly wasn't concerned with his family or the consequences when he committed the act. The family should just grieve and move on......
Maybe this mother should realize that all of the people that are held hostage over in there country is someones son.Maybe she should ask for release of all hostage.Make sure all are released before she get him back because they did not honor a deal they made already.
The prisons are full of people whose mothers plead for them, why should this guy be an exception? If sent back what would keep him from going back to his old ways? Let the U.S. courts do their job.
This is a very smart woman who knows "the respect for human rights" that America has. Yes, he is only 16, but I wonder at what age "adulthood" is reached in Somalia. This reminds me of how drug dealers use kids to run their drugs because if they get caught, they are only sentenced to juvie until they reach 18.
They are adults when they pick up a weapon, usually before they grow pubic hair. These 'kids' are like lions compared to domestic cats, and we can't be apologists for their actions. I'm tired of the US trying so hard to make every criminal into a victim due to the circumstances of his/her life.
Linda....Who says he's "only 16" ??? Let mommy produce a birth certificate showing date of birth....which I'm sure does not exist....and if it is produced, I'd bet that the ink has barely dried on the document.
His age...or whatever age is claimed...should not be any kind of a factor here because it will NOT be able to be legally verified.
That's her way of trying to get into the US. She don't miss him she probably haven't seen him in months. He sure looks uncared for I can only hope they sent him straight to the showers.
NO! Mother can not come watch. I suspect she hasn't seen the kid in a couple years and is only playing on the "American Heart" to get into our country. We raise our children to respect one another and other peoples property. We raise and educate our children in hopes for their future and the future of our nation. As Americans, we have a soft spot for the young people and will send $$ to that poor starving child in that poor country we saw on TV. We will give that sad misunderstood teenager a second chance. But these people don't operate like us(US). Those people don't give a rats ass for their kids unless they can bring home some food or money. Kids are sold into slavery and prostitution, thats their future. The people in power in Somalia are just trying to get more power, they don't care about what their greed is doing to their country or their people. The government in place is weak and useless.
The only way the world will stop the pirating is to state as a world of commerce, WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE! Blow them out of the water!!
Hold him for ransom. If they can so can we.
She just wants a visa to get her to America.
What is a 16 yr old pirate worth these days? SQUAT !!!!!!!!! She can move in with Obama aunt.
Yes ma'am, America does have a huge respect for human rights, unlike your son who has no respect for human rights
Screw it. Kill em
I cannot have any sympathy for the woman or her son. In fact a lot of these pirates are teen agers. He played the game and he must pay the price.
Then they will also be able to be brought to the U.S. and experience the wonderful heavenly conditions of a U.S. prison.
Thanks for bringing laughter to my morning. :-)
We do not know true hunger, the kind of hunger that will drive a person to desperate acts.
What do we call individuals that hijack airliners and hold the passengers/crew for ransom or the release of their buddies? I think we call them terrorists. I would like to know why they are not being dealt with the same way.
As for this clown's age, we charge and jail "children" charged as adults that are younger than 16. boo hoo!!! ~G
When is the US going to figure out that during wartime/warlike operations, use the 'take no prisoners' approach.
Its a lot cheaper...............
T-rav-752335
Yet, they had money for guns but are hungry?
Kill It!!!!!
Aaarrrrrrggggghh....hang 'im from the yardarm !!!
Unfortunately, his life is worthless.
And leave it to a civil rights guy (Kuby?) to try to get this thief off. Why do they blindly start protecting these criminals? For once I'd like to hear one of these guys say, "sorry, but this guys guilty as hell". Does that EVER happen?
I suspect this young man is for one extreme tongue lashing from the Obama Administration!
They is?
Don't forget to pay him for unemployment while in our custody.
Somebody slap that smile from his face!!
That so called 16yr old boy would shoot you dead in a heart beat. Just ask some of the people the pirates have killed already.
Pardon the guy. He made money for the insurance company. Give him a pink BMW, some gold/diamond teeth.
For whom do you steal?
If the mom wants to come to this country and be with her son, then she must seek a travel visa and hopefully her own country can pay her way.
code for terrorist training.....................hmmmmm..............
You just know some bleeding heart liberal is going to want us to pay the way for the parents to come here and pay all their expenses. Then they will be crying about him being a "just" a kid. blah, blah, blah blah.
Too bad the fourth shot missed him.
She probably got the dough from the pirates! She probably knew and even encouraged him! Let her sit home and watch the trial on sat.tv!
doremifasilosoda I would have happily remained a veteran right up to the point where some "freedom fighter" killed my buddy's son (in Iraq).
He will get a longer and more severe sentence than Madoff no doubt.
if you are so worried about him going to jail....adopt a prisoner.....stupid
I just read where the seven that NATO captured have been set free. That's right, play patty cake with the pirates that will surely be a deterent.
I would like to see them use drones to surveil the " hot " areas. Then when they see suspected pirates, send a couple gunships like the Apache. Then just smoke the worthless a$$holes and let any that live through it swim home to their worried concerned mommas.
: - O
I wonder if the Mom can swing the airfare to come to the USA? I also wonder if she can afford the 30 million dollar Visa?
Obama would be foolish to reply to the woman, let alone allow here any contact.
Yes he'd be foolish....but I've got $100 that says he's putting his response together right now. He'll reply....and odds are she'll be brought over here at our expense.
It's the most rediculious scenario which means it's the most LIKELY scenario.
NATO is useless, plain and simple. ~G
maybe she can just get into a "net cafe" as they call them there and go to the yahoo chatrooms and dating sites and make the claims of "love" like all the rest of them do to get some fools to send them money and sponsorship.
M;aybe Obama can give the mother some bailout money to get her to America, say about 1 billion cash!
Why not? Fit right in with the rest of the hierarchy of crooks. Pass it up to the higher ups.
This implies that you believe he isn't already? It is become harder and harder to not think that about him.
No need for that. UAVs also carry missiles, remember? Send a few of them up to monitor areas the ships can't see. Easy solution.
I do look good in white....LOL
Voter, I wouldn't call that a change. They've been here a long time.
The lawyer might just claim that trying this poor young soul is simply a case of mistaken identity.

Your post pretty much shows where you are coming from.
You might look ood in white (which I doubt) but it's your insides that you are ultimately judged on.
AAARRRRHH! Couldn't Ye 'praps release me wee bairn Matey? AAAAARRHH!
LOL!!!
They should have chummed the waters and made him walk the plank!!
Forget it. He wants to be a pirate, let him suffer the penalty. Damn pirates!
No, we should honor the mother's wishes and release him---in 2075!
The Shysters will be coming out from under rocks offering FREE legal counsel.
Just like Aunty who will probably move into the White House as soon as she becomes LEGAL.
QUICK!.... Drain the 'Pity-Pool' before it is stocked full of politically correct alligators!
Maybe we should do exactly what his loving mom wants....gently return him....return, via helicopter to the exact coordinates where he was picked up....and softly lower him into the ocean at that spot, so he can be free to enjoy the waves for as long as he can float.
Tony, good idea.
I'd watch pay-per-view to watch the sharks feed . . . .
Next on the Discovery Channel...Shark Week: Somalia Edition!
I'd feel bad if the shark broke a tooth biting his bony little ass.
They should throw the little Bas*ard out of the airplane somewhere over the Atlantic or Pacific.
No, that would be littering.
Justice must prevail and since his home country has no laws, ours are better than none at all.
If he was tossed out of a plane, it would be interesting to see which would hit the water first him or his poop.
big paul can justice really prevail in the world of the lawless? Seriously can it ever?
The crime was committed at sea...so I say, let the sea deal with him - not our problem. Don't you know one of those Seals was ticked?
You watch he will get off and be sent back home because he is just a baby.......
Hope youre wrong. Not the first time a sixteen year-old was tried as an adult in this country. He's no baby.
He'll ask for political asylum and become an American citizen.
Gene, we just can't leave well enough alone. We have to meddle. We are either the world's peacekeepers, breakers, for fixer-uppers!
Does anybody else want to just slap the white toothy grin off his face???
better yet lets tell all the vets they can have whatever they take from California!
Once again, where is the father in this picture?
He was the trainer. Taught his kid all he knew.
They only know who is mommy.
Obama has a lot to appologize for !!
Send him home...in a small box.
Or two.
Whaaaaa.....f-ing........whaaaaa!
Send him home in exchange for other hostages. Why should we have to pay the bill for his life in prison.
He looks like a baby rat. they need to send him back home to serve his time. The inmates will kill him if the lock him up here.
In as much as I would like to throw the little idiot to the sharks myself, maybe your on to something, then again the rest of the rats could probally care less.
"Yo ho Yo ho, its a pirates life for me".. Make him walk the plank!!!
I'm in COMPLETE agreement with you roscoe. Every word.
(um where do I click to add you to my "friends" list?) LOL
How much do you think we spent already? A whole ship full of navy guys two Special operations air drops, 3 .50 calibur rounds, press conferences. The one thing that is telling in this mess is the 3 pirates the Seals were responsible for are no longer a problem. The one pirate the state department is responsible for is going to cost millions.
Go Seals.
You can't put him in jail. Obama will pardon him!
obama will give him a cabinet position!
His cabinet position will be the Pirate Czar.
Mr. Obama may come up with a Pirate Stimulus Package by the time this is done.
No way! She can come here and be with him during trial and then go back once he is convicted. DO NOT LET HIM GO! I do not care how old he is or how the pirates got him to join.
He obviously didn't miss 'Mom' while he was carrying on with his criminal life. She should stay home.
Once the mama gets into the country she is NEVER leavin!
Unless she is put on the transport by Armed Guards,I volunteer ,did it in the Nam experienced.
But I'll have to tie her hands behind her back and put a rope around her neck.
Thats what they taught me in the crotch.
Okay, Bruce, you're in charge of giving his mom the plane ride out. But only if you promise to give her son half a ride.
I heard of that being done also.
It was called the flying test.
The hell with trying him as a juvi, he held big boy weapons in a big boy game. Adult jail here he goes, probably turn into someones happy meal.
you have got to be kidding...how about, for all you do gooders that feel sorry for dirtbags like this, maybe you can move to their country and support them.
Some of those 'Growing Up' lessons should have included responsibility as well as accountability!
Let the U.S. courts do their job.
exchange him for the other hostages or hang him
Hang him is a good idea... Hang his as* from a boom on the ship for all the other pirates to see. M-356362s' post below is a good post too.
He's not a "kid"...he's a "pirate".
Hes well past midlife for the average Somali so the kid argument doesnt play.
She stated that she "missed him." Wasn't she missing him when he was floating around on the ocean attacking people?
