When the Russian economy runs into problems, they have always run these "scholars" out to do their little dance for the public. This has been going on shince the 1920's when the first economic plans started failing. The general perception by political scientists is that when these guys start popping up in Russia, it really means that the Russian government really believes the Russian economy is tanking and needs to divert attention elsewhere.

By contrast, the United States tends to focus on ourselves and our problems even when the problems are worldwide. Con trast the two views: 1) The Russian --- our economy is strong, but look over there, the U.S. is going to break up exactly like the USSR did. 2) The U.S. view --- if we turn ourselves around, the rest of the world will turn around with us.

The media's been pumping this guy and his whackjob theories for months (years?). The story never changes, so why does it keep showing up on the front page again and again and again?

I agree that there is likely a serious economic collapse going to happen. After Bush incompentence, we have Obama, just more of the same, just a lot more expensive. I am not sure anymore he has any more of a clue than Bush did. I am hopeful, and will give the guy a chance, but with the Pelowsy and Reid-iculous led Congress, my optimism is waining.

We didn't break up after the Great Depression, and I doubt the US will break apart after this economic collapse, but we will be different. Hopefully better. In an economic collapse, perhaps the conglomerates, and corrupt business (banks, mortgage Co's, etc) won't be able to afford to buy themselves our politicians, and they can get back to working for the people. Imagine if they did this now, we wouldn't be in this position.

Um. No. Russia does not owe us a thing from WWII.That was the terms of the lend-lease program - return or destruction of the equipment. We learned from WWI that requiring repayment of loans from war-devastated economies was a very bad idea.

However, the allied victory would not have happened without Russian sacrifice. We needed them far more than they needed us. Let's just review a few things, shall we?

• America lost 418,000 lives, the USSR lost 23 million.
• USSR's airforce consisted of 14% US supplied planes.
• USSR didn't like or use Sherman tanks which they considered low-quality and chintzy compared to their own.
• USA did supply trucks in quantity, most of the trucks in the Soviet Army were American by the end of the war.

We invaded at Normandy, not because we had to in order to win the war. We invaded Europe to meet the Soviet army on its way East. If we had not, the entire continent would speak Russian today.

And if Russia had not stopped the Nazi's at Stalingrad, Europe would be german speaking today. The reason the Allies could stop the Nazi army was because they ran out of oil to run their war. The push into Russia was to get oil from Central Asia and the Middle East. The push across Africa was to get oil from the middle east and Central Asia. The idea was that one or the other would work.

Russia paid the biggest price of all for WWII. No nation compares to Russia's sacrifices. That should be respected.

I think your going off the deep end a little bit. There are people in this country who study the Koran. My ancestors came to this country for freedom of religion. That means we can worship whatever the heck we want. The men in my family have fought in every war for this country since before it was even founded. I decented from Senator John Jordan Crittenden who is a good example of the American dream and how sometimes you have to loss everything inorder to do wants right for our country and our people and ourselves. It is not easy to see past what you are use to, to see what you should do. Often it takes a major event for people to open their eyes and realize they have been wrong. We have to put down our differences and work together. We don't need communism, but we do need to be willing to lift eachother up. All of the parts need to be working together inorder to make this machine run.

We need to work with Russia and China, but that doesn't mean we have to trust them, and it doesn't mean we should turn a blind eye to their actions. The main reason for working with them is to get as much info out of them as possible. We do not want Russia and China to gang up on us, which is what appears to be happening now. The lack of new oil reserves is a major issue. We are not seeing it right now, but as soon as we try to make a recovery oil will go through the roof and stay there. Other countries are saving and using more oil and leaving less for us. There is not enough to go around. We cannot give Russia Alaska because we need that oil. China is taking advantage of us with trade. Their county is doing very well right now and that says a lot considering how much oil and how many people they need to feed. They have also been busy massively building up their army for unknown reasons. Russia wants oil bad, who knows what they are willing to do to get it.

I think your statement is more apt about the Soviet Union, member states in that country did not think of themselves as countrymen, the Russians thought of them selves as Russian, Ukraine as Ukranian, Kazakstahn as Kazakstahn. My prediction. MSNBC will go bankrupt in the next two years. How could any company, that actually pays Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews a salary to do what they do, actually survive in today's marketplace. The only program worth watching on MSNBC is the weather, but that is wrong about 3 of 4 times.

It is not just about a few companies doing well (and I am truly happy that yours is. What are you doing to accomplish this? Maybe you can help other companies). The fact remains, that millions of hardworking, legitimate taxpayers are now out of work. There is a disaster in the making of huge import should we, as a nation, not begin to understand that distributing the spoils of a decent and just society is not the same as redistributing wealth. The rich can keep their wealth. All I want is a fair shake at living the simple, frugal life I and my family prefer.

I'm not going to get into a long drawn out discussion (OK, maybe I will) but I will tell you this. My company is somewhat recession proof, consumer spending does not instantly effect us; however, it will eventually. I guess you really need to ask yourself why you are out of work (without propaganda and blanket statements of blame).

Example:....I have a friend who was a mortgage broker, he is out of work, WHY? Not because of Bush or because of 'The Rich'. He is out of work because for the past decade low interest rates and supply and demand drove land and home values to artificially high levels. At the same the banking / mortgage companies were willing to extend their debt / income ratio and let Americans get over their head. While that was happening the self indulgent / keep up with the Jones average citizen spent irresponsibly and rolled things like massive credit card debt into their mortgages. When the bubble burst two things happened.

-People could not re-finance to roll their latest debts into their homes because they owed more than it was worth.

-People could not sell because they owed more than the home was worth (and people NEED to sell homes all the time for a variety of reasons).

The real-estate market blew up and my friend was out of work. Now, I just said it without saying it was Congress's fault or Bush's fault because it WASN'T, it was the fault of the American people who were so irresponsible and the banks who let them be.

This whole economic crisis started with that; however, much of the media's doom and gloom attempts to ensure the average citizen hated and blamed Bush has blown this whole thing WAY out of proportion. Now, MSNBC is publishing crap like this make the average citizen hold their wallet even tighter. This has killed consumer confidence and I bet led in some part to YOU and many others being out of work.

The president needs to go out and say 'Hey America, that stimulus check you are getting and the tax breaks I'm promising are so you will SPEND your money, that will fix the economy!' Don't put it under your mattress because if you do it won't be worth the paper it's printed on by 2010'. ROFL! Hank, I loved that movie! I wonder how many people are around who've seen it?

My guess maybe 2 people on this board. If the Russians (or anyone else) invade this country that's exactly what they will get in my town :-)

Everybody I know saw it. I'm a California liberal, as are all my friends, but we are armed and would fight for our country and our freedom. Fortunately, I don't think the Russians are in any condition to be a real threat.
