What a bunch of idiots that country is.
We are starting to watch the Pakistani government completely fall to bits. For years the Americans and British have propped up one corrupt Pakistani government after another in an effort to further of isolating and punishing India. Not the Taliban have official control over close to a third of the country and de facto control over another third. The British continue to try to play both sides of the events with their usual mischief. The British government recently had the newspapers publish lines of armed Predator drones on Pakistani air bases. We had just got permission to base them there to go after the very exrtremists that threaten to completely collapse Pakistan and Afghanistan. Now the Arab world is up in arms about American missile drones stationed on Pakistani soil to kill Islamic militants. We will end up having to withdraw them. Thanks, Brits.
And remember that Pakistan is nuclear-armed and has long range missiles. If these are handed over to the Taliban, Iran will virtually instantly have workable nuclear bomb technology and delivery systems. Hamas and Hezbollah will have access to both nuclear materials and technology. And these are people against whom the Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) philosophy that worked so well against the Russians will have no effect whatsoever.
As this country comes apart, we have a worn out and ill-equipped military which desparately need rest, rebuilding and re-equipment. Our options are very, very limited if Pakistan goes south. And remember that the Taliban hate Hindu India just as much as they hate the United States. Another war with India wouldalmost certainly result in a nuclear exchange.
This is an extremely bad siutuation with very serious implications for sub-asia.
Well, LU-40... (msg. #1.1), the point is that the Sri Lankans are INFIDELS! Feringhees! Unbelieving pigs! Plus, ANY form of amusement, other than praying to Allah and studying the Koran and Hadith is viewed as "sinful" (for some reason, the Afghans love flying kites - to each his own - but, under the Taliban, kite flying, and listening to music or watching TV, etc., was outlawed as "un-Islamic"). Finally, by making sure that the rest of the world wants nothing to do with Pakistan, they eliminate not only the kind of "people to people" exchanges which promote international peace, but they also isolate any competing ideologies and/or political forces from any outside sources of support. SO, given how popular cricket is in the remnants of The Empire, this attack serves multiple purposes and, moreover, proves that the radical Islamists can set the agenda and attack whomever and wherever and whenever they want.
THE REAL QUESTION is why did "Newsweek" (with MSNBC giving it full exposure just yesterday) devote this week's cover story to an article by a noted Islamic apologist telling us that we in the USA and the rest of the world should learn to live with and tolerate radical Islam. How nice - our own media acting as Al-Qaeda's PR flack...

Best to wake up, Johnny, not only is Islam allowed in the USA, it's growing (estimated to now have more adherents than there are US Jews) AND it's being actively courted and pampered - government funded "foot baths" in public places (that being an Islamic observance), certification of madrassa style schools, public funding for mosques, etc. So-called "honor killings" (for violations of Islamic notions of decent behavior - stuff like teen girls wearing make-up) are becoming epidemic in the various Muslim communities around the country... and yet we worry about a few nutty Branch Davidians in Waco and the occasional polygamist out Utah way? Wait until, as we locally did, you wake up to discover that there is an Al Qaeda training camp being run just outside of town and collecting money from the local Uni... uh, charitable organization (yes, in the continental USA).
I'm not some radicalized Christian (or any kind of Christian or Jew or religious at all), but I think we need to be ready to fight for our culture, because the "Religion of Peace" is coming and it ain't peaceful at all.

BTW, I don't subscribe to the notion of "nation building", including any messianic notions about "spreading democracy" (btw, Dude, "capitalism" is an economic system while "democracy" is a political system, so kindly don't mix apples and oranges, especially when we're talking about religious and judicial systems), because I understand that not all cultures will accept or respond well to democracy in any of its forms and variants. On the other hand, what the article is about is the forceful imposition, through terror, of a particular religion and notion of justice ("Sharia"). Most people don't even know the origin of the word Al Qaeda. It was the former name of the CIA DATABASE that contained the list of names of militants we were training and arming (with American taxpayer dollars by the way) during the 70's and early 80's. But, after 2001 'Al Qaeda' suddenly became a terrorist network operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The same is not happening to the Taliban. It is just the name of the ruling Afghan party, however through repeated propaganda it is now used to refer to any act of terrorism.
The truth is that the vast majority of the worlds "terrorists" do not pledge allegiance to the Taliban, or Al Qaeda, or any other such group. They are simply pissed off people with bombs and guns, we have them in our own country too!

Newsweek new cover "How to live with radical Islam." That is the problem with the left in this country. You don't "live" with radical Islam, you only die from it. How can people call for the release of prisoners from Guantanamo Bay when they are capable of such attacks. How naive some people in this country are, releasing or letting other countries detain people like this is a tactical error of epic proportions. Prisoners are to be held and interrogated, not given rights. They are sources of Intel, not citizens. The only defense against terror is a good offense.

Regrettably, for the last 8 years, during which there have been literally thousands of Muslim-perpetrated terrorist attacks, the voice of "moderate Islam" has seldom been heard condemning terrorism. Consequently, the Muslims, themselves, having made a mockery of the idea of "moderate Islam", we are now being urged to embrace, instead, those of our "radical Islamic" brethren who are content to kill us tomorrow instead of today. This is bad, but I have this deep-down feeling that things are going to get much worse -- that it will go into Nepal and Tibet, and as long as Pakistan tries to work out a "cease fire" with the crazy people with guns, that part of the world is going to turn into hell on Earth. To answer the question, why would anyone attack a bunch of cricketers, it's because the people who are doing these things just want to kill other people. It doesn't have a whole lot to do with any religion, religion is just the excuse to do these things. It does seem to me to have the same presence as when Stalin took over the USSR in the 1930s and began making people disappear by the millions. You get rid of anyone who opposes you.

Bustem, just so you know, Bush knew that Al Quaeda was hiding in Pakistan, who might not be falling apart as bad today if we HAD gone in to Pakistan whether they agreed at first or not, and got Bin Laden, instead he sat around and let a complete psycho get away with murder and then let the ones truly responsible for 9/11 hide out and tear apart Pakistans gov't.. Islam is not the problem. There are radicals everywhere. They have created their own doctrine in the name of Islam. That is it. No moderate voices are speaking out because their livelihood and their families are constantly threatened. The Middle East has always been ruled. Their culture is set up in a way that does not embrace freedom, but instead is content with tryanny. To speak out is to be a target. Good luck with that MrIndia. I watched numerous times as my Pakistani college roomate tried to explain the location of South Asia to people. I'm surprised his head didn't explode from frustration. I hope he's okay, he was from Lahore.
MrIndia, what you see is not so much apathy as a complete lack of knowledge of geography, which does not seem to be taught in schools as it was when I was in 1st and 2nd grade, back in the Dark Ages when education meant that you learned something. I know that dedicated, good teachers can get their students to pay attention, but my impression of most school systems is that they are more interested in cramming classrooms and watering down a curriculum to the lowest common denominator than they are in making sure that the students get the best education possible. I never see world globes in classrooms any more, but that may not be usual. Just keep trying, and maybe it will get through to someone. If you do manage to get your message across successfully, give yourself a mental pat on the head.
Now, as to Tibet, since China controls Tibet, can anyone speculate what will happen if jihadists go into that country en masse? Small forays are not the same as full-blown attacks.

Northern border with Russia and some breakway former Russian republics. It also shares its North eastern border with China.
Its entire eastern border is shared with India.
and its southern border is surrounded by the Indian ocean.

I don't care about your politics, your nation or your religion, you must go after these people in a swift, unforgiving and vicious manner befitting the crime. If you are able to capture one or two, then you stick their ass on a plane and ship them where you need to and do whatever it takes to glean as much intel as you possibly can to eliminate the threat or the cell or group responsible. Sorry, when you cross the line and begin taking the lives of innocent civilians with no chance to defend themselves, you just lost whatever consideration for humane treatment you may have been afforded on a field of battle. On a battlefield , surrender is an option and a white flag is usually respected. This is nothing more than wilfull, sanctioned murder so that you can impose your religious ideology on the world. For those of you who would disband the CIA or make them "transparent", this should be a wakeup call to rethink your position. This IS the war behind the scenes of daily life. This is the ugly down-in-the-mud garbage that every nation is taxed to deal with. Transparent? Are you serious? The average world citizen has no stomach for what these guys have to deal with to keep their populace safe.Whether its an airport, train station or a large public gathering, it doesn't matter, you have the right to be secure that some psycho isn't going to be allowed to cause you death or injury for ANY reason, much less some religious fanatic bent on inflicting their beliefs on you. Did I miss something in the Ten Commandments that says sometimes its ok to murder innocent people? My bad...So please, before you try to convince me that murderers like this should be afforded the right to due process, go ask a relative of those 3,000 plus people who were killed on 9/11 or in a subway in Britain or a train station in Spain, if their mother or daughter or wife or husband were given due process before they were killed. Am I somehow less than humane because I feel the way I do? Does this mean that I am stooping to "their" level because I believe they have no rights in a court of law? You decide, I could care less. But of this you can be sure, If you own a flock of sheep and a pack of wolves is killing your sheep,what do you do? Your answer must be swift, decisive and without regret. What do you do?

I agree there are radicals in every religion. Look at Mel Gibson and his faith. Opus Dey is still alive and well. The Brethren are still present. Even radical baptists continue to make headlines. The deep contrast here is the use of physical violence. How quickly the media was to judge Mel Gibson and then find a way to pardon Islamic terrorism. This goes farther. The views of Islamic radicals contrast those of civilized countries that support civil rights. Read the article and try to bring yourself to agree with the civil rights violations.
