Most of these hate groups target African Americans but Asians, Native Americans, Jews, Hispanics, and gays are routinely vilified. The NAACP presently does about as good solving black problems as it does creating resentment. Equality is one thing, going the other direction with affirmative action is entirely another. A lot of young people today don't remember Jim Crow, but they do see quotas in the workplace, school system, and disparities over who gets public benefits.

But the article is right : the NAACP is just like Democrats. If the defining problem ever gets solved, they'll be no use for them. And while we may say "hurray" it begs the question whether the leaders and the people who benefit from its perpetuance will let that happen.

I am prone to agree, but as long as you cherish your group identity and organize politically around it, then you are just as much of a bigot as any group you organize against. Our system in its most perfect form would protect the rights of the individual, but we've never really evolved out a system that awards rights based on the group. If you believe in equality, then you should also believe in merit. I have no problem with the concept of equal opportunity, what I have issue with is those who want equality of outcome. These colleges are not black only, they're predominantly black. People of all colors, including whites, go to and graduate from these colleges.

Morehouse College recently graduated a white valedictorian. How's that for race relations. Groups like the NAACP and Acorn exist to foment strife and to maintain a mental plantation of sorts that tells people that they can only get by with government assistance. Perception is 9/10 reality. If we keep supporting the perception that minorities cannot get ahead in this country due to their own force of will and ability, then we do a disservice to our children and those that came before us. From Frederick Douglass to the current or previous CEO's of American Express, Symantec and Time Warner who were all minorities (black men) this country has shown time and again that people can accomplish what they will neither in spite of nor because of color.

Racism will disappear when there are no longer races. I'm surprised no one has waved the flag and suggested that we're all "Americans" yet. Like what is that? An even more arbitary identity? How would we ever get by if we couldn't trash talk the French and the Russians? Its an interesting game we're playing, and if the only purpose is to create peace in a consumer market, it begs the question why we even endeavor to dilute it further. You can go into any business, corporation, etc. in DE and 95% or more employees are white, unless it flipping burgers, so what is the point of asking what race are you? If you do get an interview, all of a sudden the salary printed/listed was a mistake so you are expected to take less if you want the job. The salaries vary by what and who you are. I work in PA and you should see the percentage of non-whites who must take the train an hour away to get a decent salary. There still is a long way to go. And yes, my Dad was half white and half black but America only saw him as a black man but he raised 9 children (worked 3 jobs at a time) and he was married to my mother for 60 yrs until he died. When I was a boy (60's) I had no idea what racism was. Even through grade school, I was still pretty much oblivious to the concept. Granted, it was a Catholic school with local children, very few of which were black.

But that all changed within three weeks of my freshman year of public high school.

Four blacks cornered me in the restroom and beat me up for 80 cents. That kinda soured me. I made friends with a lot of blacks during my four years there, but I also came to despise others because they were....................well, racists.

My point is, it takes two to tango. If the desire is there with the individual to treat others as they would like to be treated, all the NAACP's Sharpton's and Jackson's aren't gonna make a lick of difference.

As an example of the divide these things create, let me tell a story from the recent past.

Parents were asked to participate in an event during Black History Month (When is Native American History Month?) at my nieces grade school. When my sister-in-law went to volunteer to help with the event, she was told sorry, but we only really want the black students and parents to participate!

Studies show that many organizations would rather hire a white with a criminal record than a black with a clean record...how does that make sense? And look at the NFL, until they implemented the Rooney rule requiring all coaching openings to interview at least one black candidate, there was rarely a black head coach, and now there are a handful of very successful black coaches (Mike Tomlin, Tony Dungy, Lovie Smith)...did they just not exist before?

In response to the NAACP's complaints concerning arrests and high school completion - has it ever occurred to the organization that MAYBE the vast majority of black folks might need to change their behaviors. Even obama said so during the election. Just a thought. Further, what about folks like myself? I grew up in public schools, lived on the mill hill, borrowed to attend college and struggle to maintain a household. I really cannot concern myself with the constant cries from the NAACP - I 'm busy with life. I cannot take a great deal of time to concern myself with other's plight - especially when the vast majority of the plight is imagined. Educate me beyond where I am now - I see the NAACP as nothing more than a Political Action Committee. I see racism as a crutch.

The black man Will come out on top. Let me tell you a real life experience. My best friend is black and I am white. we both have son's. Our incomes are virtually the same. My son is a gifted student and throughout high school helped his friend get through school. My son took every hard class there was and maintained a 3.99 GPA. His son a 2.2 GPA. When it came to college scholarships hi son got a full ride that is 100% paid for. My son got $300 the amount they give every freshman.

I am a very active member of corporate America. There is no racial divide on the top floor. At least in Houston. And Washington DC. And San Antonio. And Virgina. I've lived all those places. The most prominent racist I have heard of recently is Quannell X here in Houston. He's looking for a fight. Most recently he got upset about a black publication putting Mayor Bill White in a pictoral with Martin Luther King Jr. and Obama. Quannell RACIST demanded an apology because Martin Luther King and Obama were two GREAT black men and Mayor Bill White (who most recently rode out devastating Hurricane Ike with Houston) did not belong in that picture.

I was born 20 years AFTER the civil rights movement. I OWE you nothing. Nada. Zip. You don't even get my respect (or anyone else for that matter) unless you earn it. If you do something worthy of respect, you'll get it. Black, White, Muslim, Athiest.

Okay the blacks are treated differently. Why? Because one miss step and the corporation gets hit with a suit. Do not say this does not happen it does. I witnessed this the last place I worked. This person was hired in as a buyer even though he did not have the experience in this area. He was nice and knowledgeable but really did not have all the in and outs. We tried to help as much as we could without putting our work in jeopardy. He was called on not getting his work done and given a written warning. Who do you think he called, right NAACP. They said that it was all done to get him out and that we were racist. By the way group was made up of women, men and white, black, brown and in between. We all were interviewed, I don't know about the rest but I was treated like I was below them and not once did the interviewer ask about job performance all he was interested in is what people called the man or what kind of remarks were made. The company did settle but this is what happens at least that is what happened in this company. Oh by the way there was 15 of us working in this department. Even though school to most of us there was no difference we were just kids. As always just my opinion.

The trouble with that approach is, as you illustrate with your enumeration, all the problems of blacks are self-inflicted. They can no longer claim to be victims of someone else. That's a big problem for a group of people who don't want to take responsibility for themselves. And any organization that points it out probably won't be very popular.

Bob, MOST problems that the black community face are self-inflicted, but that is not to say that there is no racism today. However, there is just as much, if not more, racism coming from the black community toward the white community as the other way around. But you are right, the black community no longer can claim to be victims and I hope that seeing that a black (bi-racial) man can be president will not only cause this population to take responsibility for their own fates, but inspire every black person to be the most that they can be. Perhaps others (poor, children of single mothers) will be given hope as well. People seem to forget this is the country in which anyone can be anything they want. First you have to define what black is. Is black a skin color? A descent thing i.e Africa? A DNA thing? A cultural thing?

A definition I've read says that black means:

a person with dark skin who comes from Africa (or whose ancestors came from Africa)

With the above definition, Obama is regarded as black, even more black than Lincoln, because you have just graded blackness in percentage terms i.e 25%. So based on your definition he is the first blacker President. Sounds dumb huh?

I have an Uncle in the KKK and believe me as long as people do as they are doing they will stay. I am ashamed of have family ties to this group. Until the word 'black' is stopped being used then then there will always be inequality. The NAACP will automatically disintegrate when the word 'black' disintegrates. Until then the term black or white will mentally separate us.

What we don't yet understand is that for each victory they will push the bar higher. Pretty soon they'll be saying the black man will not have achieved equality until there have been as many black presidents as there have been white. It will never end.

There is no reason to stop using the word "black" or "white" for that matter. They are descriptions, just like brown eyes or blue eyes.

It is insulting to use African-American in the way many use it here in the US. Not all dark-skinned persons came from Africa. Terms like that should be left for genealogy groups when defining family history.

The term "American" is the term that should be used. Then we will truly be beyond racism.

Obama just passed an equal pay for women act just a couple of days ago, so think about it, if women are still being discriminated against in the workplace, then other groups certainly are. Power does what power wants. Right now the NAACP has a kind of power, and they will never relinquish it, as long as they can perpetuate the issue. In one sentence you say black people are unwilling to take responsibility for themselves and their own actions and then you give examples of black people and organizations who have taken responsibility for themselves and their own actions and you immediately want to destroy those very responsibilities you asked for.

Also these black organizations are black in name only. A white person can join these organizations. There is nothing stopping a white pupil joining a black college. These organizations were a response to the larger society doing nothing to embrace the suppressed person. It's easy to remove the title black, but its not easy to remove hate from an organization and there are organization with hate that don't have a convenient label. For example the KKK. I don't read white in KKK, so are they an acceptable organization just because they didn't put the word white in front of their name?

If that were true then when a white girl won the Black Scholarship on every reason it would not have been taken away when they found out she was white. Whites are more of a minority in this country than any other race. There are more of every other race in this country, why because we are all orginally from another country.
