A black state senator is pushing a bill that would require South Carolina cities and counties to give their workers a paid day off for Confederate Memorial Day or lose millions in state funds.
The south and the rest of the country are on different paths even today. The Republican party has basically become the voice to the confederacy. And to be honest I have no problem with them splitting off from the rest of us now. Or any other region for that matter. The Union is suppose to be a group of loosely held together states to begin with.

Dissolve all organizations that actively practice discrimination-National Negro College Fund, Miss Black America etc... Force educational institutions to dissolve all Black Student Councils because they have 1 Black kid in their schools. Whites have allowed this discrimination to go on long enough. The white man is the most discriminated against in this country, yet we continue to support all this discrimination by allowing all these organizations and "holidays" to carry on. Time for our American/African president to push for true equality. If there is a day to celebrate one race in this country, it should be to celebrate and thank the Indians for allowing us to step all over them and take their land. Guarantee you that no Blacks would support this because somehow they'd rationalize it that the white man is once again "discriminating" against them. Racism is stronger than ever thanks to the Blacks. Your beloved MLL would be ashamed of all of you!

A good start should be in the Untited States Senate, "The Congressional Black Caucus" has no place in government, it's a racist group. They denied membership to Senator Cao of Louisiana, after he defeated his black opponent Jefferson. Cao's district is predominatly black, so the Black Caucus's refusal to allow Senator Cao to participate was purely racially motivated. Every single one of the Black Caucus theat denied Cao access should be impeached, they are unworthy of being called American's much less Senators and Congressman.
I'm so sick and tired of African Americans pushing this crap down our throats. You got the Presidency so BACK OFF! I have Native Americans in my family and I don't see us honoring days for them! Didn't we steal their land? I think we did! What perpetuates stereotypes and predjudice? African Americans constantly demanding that we celebrate every freaking moment of their history. Slavery was abolished quite awhile ago so let it go! I live in SC and the only people I see that don't get along are those with a chip still on their shoulder. Everyone else leaves peacefully and friendly and is helpful to one another - black OR white.

I too am quite tired of all this, "Slavery and Related Topics". Over the last few thousand years enough atrocities were commited against practically all men/womaen regardless of Race, Religion, Creed or Ethnic background of the World. If the United States wants to stay a Leader in the Global Community then all US Citizens and most of all Politicians need to start setting examples.
Whatever happened to the days when people just worked hard? Do we really need another day off? To me it just sounds like an excuse to take a day off work. There's no real education behind the day. Its just a day off. Call it whatever you want, Call it take a free day off work so we can all go fishing day. If your really interested in American history go to a library, what do you really need the day off for?

My Italian relatives want the same. plus please dont forget that there were tribes who helped the white man overcome several other tribes, i believe it was cherokee but i always forget? or was it pawnee, seriously cant remember right now but one of those tribes assisted the whites in taking out all their enemy tribes, if the tribes had banded together they wouldnt have lost the land?
When I was in the service, me and about twenty other Marines were in Mexico one night and fought the Battle of Tijuana outside of a bar about midnight. I think I should have a paid holiday because we too idiotically fought hard for a stupid cause. That should more than qualify us.

#62 - Wed Feb 4, 2009 8:01 AM ESTi know right, where i work, we have black clubs, we have hispanic clubs and gay clubs??? but no white club? we also have jobs that advertise that priority will be given to ethnic minorities?? what happened to hiring the best candidate for the job, i know for a fact mcdonalds has to hire a certain percentage of minorities in their workforce or they get fined for discrimination, maybe to balance out the discrimination we need a white only network, white only tv shows, white only music channels, white only schools and colleges, white only beauty pagents, white only scholorships, white only businesses, how about white only nurseries, white only cities.... can you see how ridiculous it all gets, abolish anything colour related, if you want to make it in america you do it through honesty and hard work.
What difference would it make any way?? A holiday used to be a special day which people could look forward to as a break from routine work and to commemmorate some event. But not nowadays.
The only people who get paid holidays (except for Xmas, Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July) are banks and state and federal workers, so it won't make any difference to 90% of the population anyway . My kids go to school on most "holidays" (and the university in my town even has classes on LABOR DAY!), the stores are almost all open no matter what day, most businesses operate on Memorial Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, etc. .....so who cares!

The outcome of the settlement of Europeans into an occupied America is one of the saddest events in human history. It is equivilent to what happened to the Africans who were forced out of Africa to serve as Slaves.
Why can't we honor and respect all and move forward since we can't move back.

Now that I think further about it, I guess I have to demonize those who bought the merchandise as well. My original point is that many bear the blame for slavery of the Africans and that the Civil War was not fought over slavery. I just want people to think..... would Northern brothers who fought on the Confederate side have fought for that??? NO!!! They were fighting for freedom of some states to not be dominated by other states. These states fell into geographic areas - thus the North and the South. To justify this war, the spin was that it was to free the slaves. In fact, Lincoln hated slavery in idea but he did not hate slavery in reality. He only freed the slaves in the Confederate states. Proves my point. Polarizing needs to stop, especially based on spin and not truth.
Kate, your point was well taken and it is a less known fact of History that the Civil War was not about Slavery. It was an Economic and Industrial war for control. North wanted to control and the South said take a hike.
Unfortunately the masses will voice their opinions before learning the History.

I don't think giving that holiday would make anyone from those states re-think the prejudices they still hold. To them it would just be another day off of work. Maybe he should go to work for Wells Fargo eh?

Kate, you are so right. There is quite a great misunderstanding about the Southern people (white and black) as a whole. They do not understand Southern Chivalry nor what a Southern Gentlemen represents. The many values that have been lost to many people of the USA.

I left the South for 35 years and lived in the wonderful state of Colorado, but ultimately, I moved back to South Carolina because the southern people have a special culture of treating others with a wonderful respect that is not duplicated anywhere. It is not written about, people from other places don't know about it, but they often comment on how nicely they were treated while visiting so thay know that something special is here. I think you have to have been brought up here to know that others deserve respect and honor and to make it a part of your daily life. I think we have the ability to place ourselved in the other's shoes and to try to understand how they feel. By the way Southern gentlemen are the best!

Oh spare me - there are still high schools in the south that have segregated proms. You will NEVER see a bumper sticker like I saw the other day that read "If I knew this would have happened I'd have picked by own cotton!" in the north, you'd never see a stupid racist confederate/treasonous flag on a northern car. The south needs to get with it and get educated; take a look at your educational statistics compared to the north. When your states take education as seriously as creationism, get back to me. We should have let the south secede; they'd be a third world nation by now.
voiceofcommonsense- the South paid 75% of the Fed goverments income before the war and most of that money went to northern states. That was the reason the South wanted to secede, unfair goverment practices. If we would have won you yankees would have been the third world country. It truly is the Devil's world. If Bobby Lee were alive today he would tell you the war is over the north won get a LIFE. Even he had the diginty to walk away while Union soliders were buried on his family farm.

Because of certain self-interest groups and blatant racists who know nothing about the Civil War, yet continued to protest loudly to implement changes for the removal of all symbolism of the Confederacy, it's no wonder it became personal to our Southern sisters and brothers. The actions of an ignorant few only served to reinforce their negative attitude and opposition against Yankees and Blacks.
We have an opportunity to rectify past actions and perhaps it will help to reunite us as one Nation to memorialize the Confederacy, instead of persistently pitting North against South. We need to change old habits and the outdated mentality of those who desire to fan the flames of racism, pitting North against South once again.
Our tiny State of Delaware celebrated this day in 2006 by erecting a monument to all Delawareans who crossed the Mason-Dixon Line to fight for the Southern Cause and lost their lives in battle far from home. Previously regarded as "traitors", they were never recognized. But, this intentional oversight was corrected and their names were finally carved in granite for all to see and remember. It was indeed a great day and was truly an up-lifting experience as re-enactors from all across the U.S. arrived in unison to sprinkle soil from their homelands onto the base of the monument in tribute while Northern and Southern troops held the Flag of our Nation, the Stars and Bars and our state flag together as they paid respects to those whose ultimate sacrifice was finally recognized.

What better way to open a back door for Reparations. Appeal to a sense of fairness and an opportunity to redress all those bad feelings which have been lingering blah blah blah. Once people are encouraged to open up all those little corners of repressed feelings, what could be out of bounds? It's probably a strange concept to the rest of the country but there are a tremendous number of Southerners still hanging on to any excuse to recount the History of The World from the "southern viewpoint". Whatever that is. When I moved to the South in the 70s it was so bad you would think the Civil War had ended in 1968. This holiday is the same mannequin dressed up in different clothes. After everybody gets recognition the only thing left to attend to is cleaning up and paying the bill.

The South is still crying about a war WE lost almost 200 years ago but yet we are one of the first to roll our eyes at the black population who complain about slavery (something that happened almost 200 years ago). Also, being a Texan- the way I see it and live in it...we are no longer part of the USA anyway. Take a look around. Mexico has re-taken our State. We are more Mexican than we are anything else. Also, how extreme racism got started to begin with. We should keep MLK Day, as well as Veteran's Day. After realizing the impact that the election of Obama has had and as a fellow Black / African-American, I think it would help to start a holiday like this in the mid-South. After having lived there in Memphis as well as Montgomery and Pensacola, and seeing at times, how you casn be in the wrong part of town at times, I think this would help a lot to educating the next generations to come.
No adult right now will ever really change that much. This is about the future, as it was when the High School just outside of Atlanta (GA) finally had their 1st ever integrated prom....in 2007!!! Are you kidding me?! I wish I were, but yes, that is true, and I have had fights with a few because of hatred. It does still exist and you shouldn't fool yourself that it doesn't, but there's a much bigger issue here, and as far as we have all come, it's time to tell the truth in the history books! I'm mixed, part native-American Indian, but when I am seen, I will forever be labeled just Black. Why is this? Look at our past America, it's time to discuss this openly.

Don't waste taxpayer money on another holiday, use that money to teach the many aspects of SC and US History to our students, and foster a healthy discussion among them about reasons for the civil war. The only way we will get over our hate, is to educate. In a state that is still reeling from the flag issue (taking down the confederate flag from the statehouse building), we do not need another hot-button issue to redivide us. We are "One Nation Under God". Let's study our history and learn from it, not resurrect it.
